[Q] Screen responsiveness when charging? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hey guys,
I've seen this for other phones but I didn't see a thread here. When my Razr is charging it's basically unusable as the touchscreen is very erratic.
Is there any way to fix this or is it just down to trial and error with different chargers or something like that?
Thanks!

Well writing right now from razr while charging it.
I do not have this problems. Everything works fine.

I have a off brand charger that will do that. I can't even use the phone unless I take it off the charger bascially. It's a wall charger that isn't USB. My Motorola USB charger that came with the phone won't do this.

the cause of this is using chargers that did not originally come with the phone.
It will charge the phone but because of wiring/voltage differences your phone becomes erratic receiving input from both ur finger and the charger plug
........or something like that

Never used a non original charger and the same happens to me sometimes with default swipe keyboard.

I have that problem too. Using swiftkey x and the default keyboard. It only happens when the phone is plugged to the official charger and has over 89%of battery. It starts to became a bit crazy.

whilst my phone is charging, Swype goes mental lol annoying though. using charger that came with the phone an all

I also have the problem using the original Motorola charger. On mine it depends how fast it's charging. The faster it's charging, the more unresponsive the touch input is. The charging rate depends on the total charge % of the battery.
You can see the charge/discharge rate using the Battery Monitor Widget, along with a full history.
Mine is like this:
Under 80% battery: charging at +850mA/hr. This is when it's most unresponsive.
80% - 95%: it tapers off to +550mA/hr, when the phone is usable, but not perfect.
over 95%: charging at +35mA/hr and the phone is completely responsive.
A bit unrelated - using the latest AOKP GSM, my battery drains at 0.6%/hr (-9 to -11mA/hr) when idle, with no power saving features enabled. Not too bad!

My samsung charger and htc charger both work fine.
The moto one seems to cause issues on occasion but ive never paid attention to the battery level just stopped using it.

has anyone else noticed how quickly this phone charges? I just wanted to give some props to HTC.. I forgot to plug in the phone last night, and when I woke up this morning it was 0% dead. I plugged it in, and got ready for work, an hour later when I had to leave for work, it was at 96%!!
hell ya
Nice, haven't really paid much attention actually.
All I can say is that the ReZound is everything the my Thunderbolt should've been, including the battery charge and life.
Hmm.. I mainly just charge in my car & it seems like it takes forever(close to 3 hours). I spend most of my time driving otherwise i'd plug it into the wall and see. I guess it also doesn't help that the phone is also always being used while charging to.
However, battery life wise, it lasts 2 - 3 of constant use before it dies.

It will take longer to charge from a USB port and a car charger....won't take nearly as long when plugged into the wall. Just an fyi

yeah, the motorola car charger or the htc one seem to be the best bet..you have to look at amps.
most ****ty car chargers are like 500ma, which will take like 3-4 hours to charge..you have to get the ones that match the AC charger, so around 1amp (1000ma) and you're set. the motorola is the closest i've seen, at like 950ma or so. charges it pretty well.
i have the motorola p513 rapid car charger & that's the one that seems to take forever. i've also got a 400watt power inverter & have tried just using the cable & wall plug that came with the phone and it doesn't seem to make much difference either. i've tried it in both the limo and my van... i know it's not a problem battery-wise with the van as there's 6 car batteries in it.
shazbot!...
I have the extended battery for mine, it seems to go from 10% to 100% in about four hours. I think for most phones it'd about three hours or so for a stock battery. So it looks like it does charge faster for me as well.

I ran my phone till it died today. I have had it on the charger for 1 1/2 hours, still barely 50%, I think you were on crack man. I was charging the phone with it off for the first hour too.

i used to have this problem until i found there was a difference between charging cables and chargers. I dont mean the amperage size, i mean, some chargers/cables put your phone into USB charging mode, which is much much slower than AC charging.
THere is an app on the market called 'current widget' that can tell your charge rate. I used it on an older phone that was compatible with the widget (rooted rommed and cust kernel) and found that the charger I was using wasnt "AC" charging my phone, even though it was an AC charger. I went through a couple of cable charger combinations until i found the ones that worked right.
I have a USB car charger too (the kind you just plug a USB cable into). Using the widget i found that the USB cable I was using in my car was not 'AC' Charging the phone, and as a result, if i used navigation or anything like that, the phone would deplete power faster than it was getting it. I changed cables and problem was solved.
You can download the widget and use it on the rezound, but it does not update correctly, nor does it seem to be as accurate as it should.
For example, if I am not charging the phone, it should say "0 mA, but it does not. I have noticed though that when I am getting a good charge, the charging rate does show an increased rate, and because I am failure with the app, ive used it to confirm the charging rates.
You can try to download the app and run it. Plug in your phone, and look at the 'mA'. While its not charging it will be ~100 or so. during charging it should be up in the 500-600 range. but the app does not update as fast as it should, so you have to let it sit a bit before the number will change (normally it changes in realtime) but after charging for 5 min or so , if you still see numbers <200 you are not charging at the optimal rate. Try a new charger / cable.
I have 6 chargers, lol. All of them are 850mA chargers.
Here's a screenshot from this morning, I went to bed with at at 5%, and looks like it was full charged within 2 hours time. Not bad!

You know current widget shows how much your phone is using right? It never says 0mA when your phone is charging because your phone is using current when it is in use. It never goes to zero at any time actually unless your phone is dead.

that is not the way it worked with the droid charge with a custom kernel. It showed your charging current. or more accurately, the amount of current that was going to the battery for charging. When the charger was unplugged, it showed 0mA.
Maybe we are talking about different apps
that is really fast. I wonder if that is why some of them are overheating and going into bootloops...

Good point... They may not be regulating the rate they are charging properly.

Hehe... That "Current Widget"... When I use my Belkin USB car charger dongle, it fluctuates between 100 - 300mA... When I use my Power Inverter, it's 400 - 900(depending if the engine I'd running or not.
The bizarre thing though, is when it's not even plugged in/charging, the widget still shows mA fluctuations and makes me wonder if the thing is even working or not.
Alright peeps, I just got this Belkin 2.1amp (2100mA) usb car dongle "rapid charger" from Walmart. The packaging says it's for tablets so I'll see how it holds up against the mighty Rezound.

Charging Time

How long does it take before your batteries are fully charged?
First, need to start by stating it seems the charger that came with my S3 may need replacing, as the phone doesnt charge when I connect it. I connected my Note's charger though and it started charging.
I let my battery drain to 1% and started charging, its been 2 and a half hours and its at 47%.
Does that sound normal? My Note gets fully charged in about 3 and a half hours.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Have you tried the original charger & cable again after you got a little juice in the battery from Note's charger? Also to determine if its charging slowly, were you using the phone for various things while it was charging??? How long has your screen been on while charging, because that is the biggest battery sucker on a Samsung device.
Just tried using the original charger and no luck. Weird thing is the S3 seems to think it.is just connected via USB as the USB connection prompt appears whenever I try to use that charger, but still doesnt charge.
Im using the Note's charger now and it is charging again.
The entire time the phone was sleeping, screen was not on.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Sounds like either a defective charger, or a defective battery/phone. If you have a warranty, I advise exchanging your device through that method.
Thanks went to Samsung and turns out the cable is defective.
How long does it take for your S3s to fully charge coming from little to no charge?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I never leave mine till 1%. Usually at around 20% and it takes 4-5 hours. Is it better to leave till 1%?
Also how fast are you depleting a? Had a galaxy s and a iphone 4 before and the s3 seems too deplete a little faster.

Extremely slow charging (12+ hours).

I recently upgraded to a Rezound before the family share data plans came around to keep my unlimited.
First thing I did when I got the phone was to install the latest ICS RUU, unlocked via htcdev, s-off and ra recovery. For the ROM I used business sense ics. Started on 5.4 and upgraded to 5.5. I'm using the stock kernel bundled with the ROM. It's running awesome. Only problem I have is the battery charging.
I have the OEM HTC 2750 ma extended 3.7v battery. The charging is extremely slow. It took the phone almost twelve hours to go from dead to "charged". I've read a few issues regarding this, but nothing that looks like it matches my issue.
Using battery monitor I checked the ma when charging and it seems to be charging at a slower pace than via even USB. It ranges anywhere from 175ma to 400ma with occasional jumps to 800ma and even the occasional dip into negative ma even with the charger connected. According to the app it seems to stall at 98% charged with a charge of 2692 mAH of 2720 mAh. I've tried the stock charger that came with it, an igo charger, an lg charger. Just about every charger I could think of. Even the 2.1 amp chargers.
Anyway, I'm at a loss. I love the phone, I just hate the fact that I have to basically be tethered to a charger for 12 hours to get a charge that only goes to 98%. Any ideas or explanations of to why this is happening. I checked the battery threads here, but like I said or doesn't really match my setup. I appreciate any input.

I know you have tried different wall plugs but have you tried different cables?
It is possible you might have got a lemon.
Yeah, I've tried a few different cables, even tried bump charging like I did with my old incredible. When you say lemon, do you mean the battery or the phone itself? everything is working so well except for the charging.
Sent from my MB865 using xda app-developers app
Does the normal battery charge at a normal milli amp rate or do they both charge slowly? Also, how hot is the phone when it is charging slowly? The phone might be getting too hot and slowing the charge down to reduce heat
Honestly, I haven't actually used the stock battery. I'm not at home now, but when I can I will switch batteries and let you know what happens.
The temp is usually in the low 90s when charging. It actually increases during use. Right now, discharging the temp is at 107 and seems to be climbing.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Try the stock battery. We need to narrow it down to a phone or battery problem.
install current widget
tell us what the mah charging rate
check ur cable might damage or fake
So I ran down my battery until the phone shut off today. While I was waiting I wiped the battery stats five times. I'm currently charging the phone now and it's charging much faster. The ma when charging now is up where it should be. Ranging anywhere from 500 when I'm using the phone to over 1000 when I leave the phone alone. I don't want to speak to soon but maybe everything worked itself out. I got about six hours of use out of the battery, and that was with the screen on over 90% of the time. Not bad. I'll report back after a few charge and discharge cycles.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Settings/Power/Battery Status. With the OEM charger and cable, it should say "Charging (AC)." If it says "Charging (USB)," there's a problem, with charger, cable, the jack on your phone, or the firmware you're running.

Battery charging problem JB stock

Hi guys,
My phone is on UAE official
Just updated from ics to jb using kies and the charging is taking forever like 7% per hour
While on charge if im using the phone it actually is decreasing the battery instead of charging.
Checked using the current app the charger is supplying 1amp tried various cables and chargers etc and same
Would I need to factory reset or wipe cache after an official update.
By the way on ics charge time is perfect so not hardware fault.
Any reply would be great
Cheers

Been said in several other threads that this can happen if the phone wasn't on 100% when upgraded - maybe it removes battery stats. Apparently after the first full slow painful charge its reverts back to normal. I guess its trickle charging so not to damage the battery. Say battery was 50% when updated - it thinks this is full charge - once you do actually fully charge it the phone then re-learns the actual full battery in stats and is ok.
Not sure if this is 100% or not though, i made sure i was fully charged when i updated last night.
All you can do is try and see if its back to normal after a long lengthy first full recharge
Yes that could be the case due to updating at around 85 percent.
Thanks for the great info
What explains the charge decreasing while on charge on use ??
Anyone ??

Ok so I changed the original charger that has the usb input with the extension cable. This is the 1amp charger the red led looked dim using this on JB rom
Now I used the 500ma output direct wall charger with no usb input all in one charger and the red led is full bright like ICS rom and now charging while using phone and charge rates are back to normal
anyone know how to fix usb charger thinking its not AC more like charging from pc usb ??
Cheers

I don't know what really is happening but my phone started to charge reeeeeallly slow in the last two days. ( I got JB over the air a few days back).
It's for example charging right now and as soon as I start to use it while charging, the battery percentage goes DOWN.
I never had this before. On ICS I was able to easily get through 2 days (I mostly have power saving feature on, since everything works great even in power save mode).
What the hell is happening here.

I used to have this problem, too. I fixed it by turning my phone off and letting it charge to 100%. After that, it would charge and discharge as expected again.
I have the same problem,
But I have a temporally solution , I charging my mobile with my old charger for galaxy s2 ( which is direct to wall ) , it will charge fast as ICS rom before ( 1-100% 2:20 mnts)
I think there is a problem in JB rom, the mobile thinking the original charger (with extension USB cable) it is charging from computer ... so it is really really slow , plus it is not charging after 90%
any how .. the mobile charging well when it is off.!!!
This my experience
Yes like you im using direct charger 500mA and its charging while I use phone and I get full charge from 10% to 100% in about 2 hrs and 50 mins
For a second I thought I was the only one with this issue turns out many of you guys noticed this problem aswell
thanks for the all the input

Slow Charging

Since a few days my phone doesn't charge good.
When I charge my phone over night, it get's to 50% but not any higher.
The phone charges really slow.
I've tried my old htd desire charger end the normal samsung charger, but it make no difference.
What can be the problem?
The charger, battery or the phone itself?
It`s most likely the battery, make sure the terminals on the battery and in the phone are clean.
An Anker battery is around $10-15 , but NFC is reported not to work with it, or an original Samsung battery is around $25
