Extremely slow charging (12+ hours). - HTC Rezound

I recently upgraded to a Rezound before the family share data plans came around to keep my unlimited.
First thing I did when I got the phone was to install the latest ICS RUU, unlocked via htcdev, s-off and ra recovery. For the ROM I used business sense ics. Started on 5.4 and upgraded to 5.5. I'm using the stock kernel bundled with the ROM. It's running awesome. Only problem I have is the battery charging.
I have the OEM HTC 2750 ma extended 3.7v battery. The charging is extremely slow. It took the phone almost twelve hours to go from dead to "charged". I've read a few issues regarding this, but nothing that looks like it matches my issue.
Using battery monitor I checked the ma when charging and it seems to be charging at a slower pace than via even USB. It ranges anywhere from 175ma to 400ma with occasional jumps to 800ma and even the occasional dip into negative ma even with the charger connected. According to the app it seems to stall at 98% charged with a charge of 2692 mAH of 2720 mAh. I've tried the stock charger that came with it, an igo charger, an lg charger. Just about every charger I could think of. Even the 2.1 amp chargers.
Anyway, I'm at a loss. I love the phone, I just hate the fact that I have to basically be tethered to a charger for 12 hours to get a charge that only goes to 98%. Any ideas or explanations of to why this is happening. I checked the battery threads here, but like I said or doesn't really match my setup. I appreciate any input.

I know you have tried different wall plugs but have you tried different cables?
It is possible you might have got a lemon.

Yeah, I've tried a few different cables, even tried bump charging like I did with my old incredible. When you say lemon, do you mean the battery or the phone itself? everything is working so well except for the charging.

Does the normal battery charge at a normal milli amp rate or do they both charge slowly? Also, how hot is the phone when it is charging slowly? The phone might be getting too hot and slowing the charge down to reduce heat

Honestly, I haven't actually used the stock battery. I'm not at home now, but when I can I will switch batteries and let you know what happens.
The temp is usually in the low 90s when charging. It actually increases during use. Right now, discharging the temp is at 107 and seems to be climbing.

Try the stock battery. We need to narrow it down to a phone or battery problem.

install current widget
tell us what the mah charging rate
check ur cable might damage or fake

So I ran down my battery until the phone shut off today. While I was waiting I wiped the battery stats five times. I'm currently charging the phone now and it's charging much faster. The ma when charging now is up where it should be. Ranging anywhere from 500 when I'm using the phone to over 1000 when I leave the phone alone. I don't want to speak to soon but maybe everything worked itself out. I got about six hours of use out of the battery, and that was with the screen on over 90% of the time. Not bad. I'll report back after a few charge and discharge cycles.

Settings/Power/Battery Status. With the OEM charger and cable, it should say "Charging (AC)." If it says "Charging (USB)," there's a problem, with charger, cable, the jack on your phone, or the firmware you're running.

has anyone else noticed how quickly this phone charges? I just wanted to give some props to HTC.. I forgot to plug in the phone last night, and when I woke up this morning it was 0% dead. I plugged it in, and got ready for work, an hour later when I had to leave for work, it was at 96%!!
hell ya
Nice, haven't really paid much attention actually.
All I can say is that the ReZound is everything the my Thunderbolt should've been, including the battery charge and life.
Hmm.. I mainly just charge in my car & it seems like it takes forever(close to 3 hours). I spend most of my time driving otherwise i'd plug it into the wall and see. I guess it also doesn't help that the phone is also always being used while charging to.
However, battery life wise, it lasts 2 - 3 of constant use before it dies.

yeah, the motorola car charger or the htc one seem to be the best bet..you have to look at amps.
most ****ty car chargers are like 500ma, which will take like 3-4 hours to charge..you have to get the ones that match the AC charger, so around 1amp (1000ma) and you're set. the motorola is the closest i've seen, at like 950ma or so. charges it pretty well.
i have the motorola p513 rapid car charger & that's the one that seems to take forever. i've also got a 400watt power inverter & have tried just using the cable & wall plug that came with the phone and it doesn't seem to make much difference either. i've tried it in both the limo and my van... i know it's not a problem battery-wise with the van as there's 6 car batteries in it.
shazbot!...
I have the extended battery for mine, it seems to go from 10% to 100% in about four hours. I think for most phones it'd about three hours or so for a stock battery. So it looks like it does charge faster for me as well.

i used to have this problem until i found there was a difference between charging cables and chargers. I dont mean the amperage size, i mean, some chargers/cables put your phone into USB charging mode, which is much much slower than AC charging.
THere is an app on the market called 'current widget' that can tell your charge rate. I used it on an older phone that was compatible with the widget (rooted rommed and cust kernel) and found that the charger I was using wasnt "AC" charging my phone, even though it was an AC charger. I went through a couple of cable charger combinations until i found the ones that worked right.
I have a USB car charger too (the kind you just plug a USB cable into). Using the widget i found that the USB cable I was using in my car was not 'AC' Charging the phone, and as a result, if i used navigation or anything like that, the phone would deplete power faster than it was getting it. I changed cables and problem was solved.
You can download the widget and use it on the rezound, but it does not update correctly, nor does it seem to be as accurate as it should.
For example, if I am not charging the phone, it should say "0 mA, but it does not. I have noticed though that when I am getting a good charge, the charging rate does show an increased rate, and because I am failure with the app, ive used it to confirm the charging rates.
You can try to download the app and run it. Plug in your phone, and look at the 'mA'. While its not charging it will be ~100 or so. during charging it should be up in the 500-600 range. but the app does not update as fast as it should, so you have to let it sit a bit before the number will change (normally it changes in realtime) but after charging for 5 min or so , if you still see numbers <200 you are not charging at the optimal rate. Try a new charger / cable.
I have 6 chargers, lol. All of them are 850mA chargers.
Here's a screenshot from this morning, I went to bed with at at 5%, and looks like it was full charged within 2 hours time. Not bad!

You know current widget shows how much your phone is using right? It never says 0mA when your phone is charging because your phone is using current when it is in use. It never goes to zero at any time actually unless your phone is dead.

that is not the way it worked with the droid charge with a custom kernel. It showed your charging current. or more accurately, the amount of current that was going to the battery for charging. When the charger was unplugged, it showed 0mA.

Hehe... That "Current Widget"... When I use my Belkin USB car charger dongle, it fluctuates between 100 - 300mA... When I use my Power Inverter, it's 400 - 900(depending if the engine I'd running or not.
The bizarre thing though, is when it's not even plugged in/charging, the widget still shows mA fluctuations and makes me wonder if the thing is even working or not.
Alright peeps, I just got this Belkin 2.1amp (2100mA) usb car dongle "rapid charger" from Walmart. The packaging says it's for tablets so I'll see how it holds up against the mighty Rezound.

Time the Note II takes to recharge

How long should our Note II take to recharge from 0% to 100%? Problem with practically all Android phones is that it just takes way too long to recharge. Last night I plugged my Note at about 1AM, depleted all the way down. When I woke up at 7AM, it was still at 70%. Does that sound about right for everyone? I understand that we have a huge battery capacity but the limitation with the microUSB port is definitely there.
no something is not right...my device recharges in 2.5hrs from below 10% to 100%
You using an outlet or CPU?
if CPU, are you directly connecting to a USB port or a hub?
My cpu charges so slowly compared to an outlet.

I would turn the phone off, try dif outlet, try charging it, see if it is any better.
If no, probably something hardware related.
if yes, probably something you have installed then i would just restart from stock.
It takes me about 2-3 hours with the oem charger.

I've been having this problem too, and I can't really pin it down. I'm using the charger that comes with the S3,which is only rated at 1amp so I know that's the biggest factor. However, sometimes it charges to full in a few hours, other times after a night on the charger it will have only made it to 60% or so. The real stumper is that it only tends to drain about 1-2% an hour in deep sleep, so it's not like it's draining faster than the charger can keep up. It seems completely random. I'm ordering a 2amp charger to see if it helps, im sure it will, but I'm just confused by the random nature of this.
Yea something is definitely wrong. Mine charges in about 2.5 hours from near 0%. Try a different outlet

Yeah about 2-3 hours is my usual charge time from 20% to 0% range respectively.
I still can't help but feel that that is somehow slow though. Can't tell, it's been so long since I had a small battery I don't know what a fast charge is nowadays.
Going from zero is way different than going from 1% the battery tries to protect itself so it trickle charges for a while. Honestly going from 10-100 should not take more than three hours probably closer to two

not sure if this helps, but do you have light manager installed? I had an issue when I first downloaded it and set it up, that night when I went to charge it it would charge VERY SLOW...I finally isolated the issue to light manager....I uninstalled it and reinstalled and it has been fine ever since. The Note 2 for me now charges faster than any device I have ever had.

Hi,
This is what I have found. Sometimes when the microusb end is plugged into the phone that the phone charges at usb rate instead of ac which is wall outlet. I only have this problem with a standard usb cable in the car. Will change it soon but. What you can do after you plug in the microusb into the phone goto settings then battery and see how the phone sees the charging its getting. It will say either usb or ac. Ac is full charge rate usb is much slower since usb like off a pc or laptop has a lower output to your phone.
If you see it takes more than 3 hours to charge your phone and it says ac in settings then you definitely have a problem with either the charger, usb cable or phone.
Thanks,
Bryan
If you're using the cable and charger that came with the phone, you have a problem. Based on what you reported, I'd say you're using a 1A or less charger.

The app can only tell how much different the battery is, not how much juice is actually flowing into it. Meaning, the possibility exists that you phone is *using* juice while it's charging, lowering the amount of difference the app can see.

Thread fail. Voltage output, as verified with a Fluke 77 Type IV multimeter, is spot on 5 VDC. Current, which is governed by the phone, has been verified by many to a max of 1900 mA.
I can see just from the screenshots that the app is detailing misinformation. Were your phone actually charging at the rate indicated, it would take approximately 26 days for it to fully charge, assuming no use, from the 76% in the screenshots.

I had an iPhone 5 that charged ridiculously fast compared to older phones.
When I'm charging my new S 4, how do I get the faster charge rate?
I'm currently using the Moto 2 USB wall outlet charger that came with my razr maxx hd. And it seems like it takes way longer then my five and I chalked it up to having twice the battery.
Is there a faster way to charge?

Keep in mind there's more to it then just the wall charger's output ability. There's something in the S4 that recognizes the original sammy charger and turns up the charge rate yet will only allow a trickle charge on other non-sammy 2.1A wall chargers.
It appears that dome people are aware of this and have managed to modify the non-sammy chargers to enable the faster charge. Then there's some semantic confusion between "quick charge" and "fast charge" features that may be enabled in roms or kernels.
All I know is I wish there were more info on this stuff.
A little knowledge of how Li-ion batteries charge is an important thing. Li-ion batteries have special charging requirements.
The part you plug into the wall... thats not a charger... its a power supply. It provides a 5v DC output at up to 2 amps.
The charger is built into the phone, and it determines how to use that available power to charge and power the device.
Li-ion batteries charge in a two stage cycle that is called "constant current/constant voltage". It is also important to know that a battery's voltage drops as it is discharged. (this voltage drop is how the battery meter gets its information, as it is predictable when tested under constant loads... the variable load of a phone is why the meter seems to be inaccurate at times)
During the first phase, "constant current", the battery is fed a constant current at the same voltage as the battery is currently outputting. As the battery takes in energy, the voltage rises but the current is kept constant.
The second phase, "constant voltage" starts when the battery reaches its highest voltage. (or more accurately, its highest safe voltage, which is around 90% capacity) During this second phase, the battery is fed a constant voltage, (the max voltage) and the current varies. The battery will draw as much current as it is able, and this rate slows naturally as the battery reaches full capacity. When the current drops lower than a certain set amount, the charger stops the charging process and the battery is said to be fully charged. This second phase is slow compared to the first phase, and that is why it can seem like the last 10% of charge takes longer than any prior 10%.
Some phones use the power supply to both power the device and charge the battery, the battery is electrically isolated during charging... but most charge the battery without isolation. Either way, the power from the power supply is being used to both charge and power the device, and this limits the charging speed.
This also limits the maximum capacity the battery can be charged to while in the device, because the voltage/current measuring is less precise. Unfortunately for these phones, the charging is controlled by software, and not simple hardware circuits that are isolated from the battery power. In fact, even when charging the phone with the power off... the phone is still actually powered up but in a low power background mode. This mode is actually a special screen off recovery mode. CWM recovery has had several instances of bugs, where the phone could not charge if the battery died to the point of powering of the device. Because the phone could never power into the special mode to start charging, due to this special mode being missing from, or bugged in CWM.
Also... these batteries have on average a 2-3 year lifespan, and also limited number of recharge cycles. The 2-3 year life is the same even if the battery is unused. As the battery ages, it looses capacity.
Charging at slower rates is better for battery lifespan than higher rates. Now the batteries in the S4 and especially the Note 2 are larger, and 2A is still considered a fairly slow rate, but of course 1A is even better. If you tend to charge only at night while sleeping, it may be better to use a 1A charger.
Awesome explaination !!! That makes complete sense and explains things. The point made in a prior post, about the phone recognizing the new charger, thus charging faster makes sense as well. The new charger must "turn on " the quicker charging on the S3 as well, because it charges my old S3 as fast as my S4. I didn't try the charger on the older firmware but it definetly works with the latest update.

The Mega charging/discharging issues..

I love my Mega. It is by far the best phone Ive ever had. But, the problems I have with the power usage and management on the device are a total nightmare.
1) The discharging nightmare:
The battery lasts NOTHING. Basically I get about 5 hours of use.. maximum.. no matter what I do.. and I have slimmed down to the ROM to having that NOTHING active.. I literally am left with active 6 services and I monitor CPU usage that is always near zero with NO apps hogging resources. From what I monitor on the device's battery usage, it's clearly always about 90% from the display! And yes, I dim the screen as much as I can of course, but usually not below 1/2way.. I hate screens too dim. However even just on standby with the screen off I still lose about 5% to 8% of battery an hour. Worse, even with the device Powered OFF, I still lose about 20% of battery a day. The ONLY way I have found out to control battery drain completely, is to take the battery out. That's it. Anyone else with similar symptoms and a fix or, is just that the stock battery totally sucks??? Also, any other off brand batteries are any better?.. (not the fat ones rated at much higher amps but that have an extra bulge.. that I don’t want)..
2) The charging nightmare:
This to me is the worse problem. It is bad enough how quickly this device issues battery, bit not nearly as bad as trying to charge efficiently again. I now have tried 3 different chargers/brands (and cables) to try fix the charging problem that is, it takes HOURS and HOURS to charge the battery. I am talking 5 to 6 hours to get it charged and if the screen is on and Im using the device it actually charges NOTHING at all and still keeps discharging (albeit much slower of course)... the fact is that the charging process is so pathetically slow that is less than real-time which means, with the device connected to power supply, the battery STILL drains if I try use it. This is absurd. However, mysteriously enough I have found ONE way that charges the phone super fast.. using a SONY External Power Pack (model CP-F1L) rated at 2200mAh. This is seems crazy because the power output of an external power pack should be much lower than the stock (and other Samsung) USB chargers.. but, it's what works.. the ONLY thing that works. And I have noticed that when connected to a USB Power charger, the Mega's Red LED light turn on faded.. however, when connected to the SONY External Power Pack, is bright red. Clearly more juice going in.. or something like that. Again, anyone else with similar symptoms and a fix the charging time, or, any good recommendation on a extra strong USB power adapter/charger that will make this thing at least charge faster?
Thanks in advance for the input and advice:silly:
Sounds like something is not letting your phone sleep or the battery is defective. Try putting CPU spy on it and let it set for a while. Then check to see if it is getting into deep sleep or if it is even stuck at a certain frequency.
There is an app on the playstore called Galaxy charging. Try it to see what rate it is charging. Though with the rate your phone discharges, the charger may only being supplying an amount just over the drain rate which is why it takes so long to charge.

Yep, something wrong there. I'm stock and this thing won't quit :good:
I would flash the stock rom back into your phone and see how the battery works then as this not normal as mentioned by other members as I am still on the stock rom but rooted only and I have great battery life.
That is were to start by flashing the stock rom and if no change then battery or maybe a hardware problem.
Did you have good battery life before you starting flashing with the phone or did this occur after the stock rom was removed and custom rom with stuff removed to gain performance?

You could try to remove the battery from the phone for about 5 secs and re-install and see it that helps as sometimes if you take the charger off as soon as it is done charging it might not show 100% at times when booting as I leave mine on for a bit longer and it seems to help..even though charge light is green..I leave it longer on.
If your phone is rooted get a app called battery calibrator from the google store as it is free and install it and just before you shut down the phone to charge wipe the battery stats with this app and then shutdown phone and fully charge and then see how the battery works after the battery stats wipe as that can usually help.

Thanks for the tip. Installed the app you recommend, now I understand better. With the stock Samsung USB charger I get 420 readings. With the other 2 chargers I get 500 and 540. However, with the Sony External Power Pack I get 1900!..no wonder it charges super fast with it! My question now is what's up with all the USB chargers I have? I even tried my old Galaxy Tab 7 charger (strongest rated charger I have) and still only feeds 480. This is all so bizarre. So, where to get a super strong charger for the Mega?
(sorry.. by whatever reason my reply got posted 4 times.. so strange. I try delete the first three but cant)..

Usually when this happens there is something wrong with the USB cable not necessarily the charger. Is the sony cable a USB type cable or a hard wired one? If it is USB type try using it with the other chargers and see what your results are.

Yes indeed I notice the Sony Power Pack cable is short and thick. The Samsung cable is long and thin. I get much higher charging power using the thick short cable. Maybe I need go shop for a proper longer/thicker cable.

I've certainly found the USB cable makes a big difference to the charging speed. I got a couple of 2m cables off Ebay and they're hopelessly slow, but the stock Samsung cable is fast. I just wish it was a bit longer!
I have the same issue
I have the Sprint Mega. Not refurbished and original factory state but I have horrific charge/discharge issues. Right now, my phone just got to 100% charge which I then unplugged the charge cable. Within 5 mins, I went from 100% to 96% and it is losing battery even quicker.
VeEuzUKY: It's been a while but do you still have this phone? Any updates? I should prob invest in a thicker USB cable like you've describe. It has the most charge rate.
I got my mega 6.3 last week. Since then it has said 100% charged... even when charging or dead. So I got a new battery thinking it was the battery but its obviously not and im not sure what it is that could be the problem. Im not sure if its crucial for my phone, if it can be fixed easily and cheaply, or if I need to return my phone to the place I bought it from.

Phone Charging

Okay.. well my battery was never the greatest. I mean it lasted a good amount of time when I was not doing anything on it. While using it, it didn't die too too quickly. It charged just fine. Didn't take too long to charge up....
Well now.. when I plug the charger in, the symbol comes up to show it is charging. But it takes forever now to charge. If it's at like 75% it takes hours for it to charge to 100%. Never used to do that. & when I have it charging and I'm doing stuff on my phone... the battery percentage goes down... very slowly.. but it goes down.
So I dunno if it's the battery or the charger. Cuz the charger does work just extremely slow now and doesn't seem to charge up while plugged in & being used. If I keep it plugged in and do nothing on it. It charges... just extremely slow now.
Anyone else have an issue like this?? What Do You Guys Think It May be??
Please help.. thank u

stock charger and cable?
Are you using the stock charger and cable? Have you had to replace either recently? The stock charger will do 1900 mAh with the stock cable. Any other combo I've personally only gotten about 1200 mAh at any given time. Get the app Galaxy Charging Current *lite* and see what you are actually charging at. Could give you an indicator of what is wrong.
