Okay, so I used an online form to inquire about the release of the Prime. Below is the response I got. To be fair this is just an Asus customer support rep. However, you would think if there was an actual firm in-store date he might know it. Anyway, I thought I'd post the result as depressing and inconclusive as it is. If someone else has already done this just let me know and I will take it down.

[Problem Description]
Hi. I am looking to order a few of these tablets and docks as holiday gifts. Can you tell
me the official release date that I may be able to purchase these tablets in the store. Will they be available before the Christmas holiday?
Thank you very much in advance for any help you may provide.

Yeah. It is what it is. Some random support rep saying to be patient...lol. I thought it was interesting though.

I guess you never know until you try, right?
Good Day,
For those users who are suffering from the "Serial Number Not Found" problem we are currently trying to replicate the problem. In the meantime, there has been some success following these instructions.
Issue -
1. System will not auto or manual update to the latest firmware or image.
a. Go to Settings, Backup and Reset, start a Factory Data Reset. Please do this and after the reset let the unit remain active (settings, display, sleep, always on) for 15 minutes with a WiFi connection active so the system can sync with the ASUS servers. Hopefully the system will see the update, if not please go to settings, About Tablet, and then double tap on System Firmware Update please.
b. Alternative Version until the Service Side Fix is implemented.
There is an alternative way to get the updated firmware on your unit.
Ensure you have a micro-sd card available for this update, please download from a PC the US (WW/TW released also) firmware for the device. Please verify that your firmware is US (or WW/TW). In the SETTING and ABOUT TABLET it will tell you in the About section.
Example: You should be able to see the build number US_epad-9.X.X.X_2012xxxx where "US" means build type.
You can download the correct update file from the support site on the below link.
http://support.asus.com/Download.as...cher.zip#US_epaduser9_4_2_7UpdateLauncher.zip
Extract the zip file to the root of your Micro-Sd. It should be the file US_epad-user-9.4.2.7.zip for the US version as an example.
Ensure the AC adapter is plugged in, all apps are closed and you are at the desktop screen, install the micro-SD card and you will get a notification on the bottom task bar to update the firmware. Please follow the instructions.
If that does not work, please PM the serial number of your unit.
1/16/12 Update - We have replicated this problem and hopefully we will have a solution shortly.
1/17/12 Update - Thank you to the users I reached out to for their contact information. You should hear from our engineering or technical support staff shortly to verify a few settings and to try another OTA update sequence. For those I did not contact yet, we might expand the group for additional testing. I have read all the messages so please do not be upset if we have not contacted you yet. We are very close to finalizing a fix for this problem but first we will have to confirm your unit setup.
1/18/12 Update - Technical Support and Engineering will contact another subset of users starting today. We are in the final process of testing two solutions to this problem.
1/19/12 Update - We are finalizing testing with the last subset of users and will post instructions on the fix in the near future. Just a reminder, for those I or engineering did not contact directly yet, it does not mean we are ignoring your problem. We have read all the messages so please do not be upset if we have not contacted you yet.
1/21/12 Update - I will have updates tomorrow and a new communication system with forum members headed up by a dedicated staff.
1/22/12 Update - I will provide an update tomorrow on our new Customer Service Support program for the Transformer Prime and additional forum support that will be coming in the very near future. In addition, I expect an update from engineering and service shortly for the resolution on this issue. We have completed replication testing.
1/23/12 Update -
For North American users with the Serial Number Not Found problem that we have not directly contacted during the replication testing cycle we ask that you please send the following information to [email protected] :
Subject: <TF201 SN Not Found – Your Contact Name>
Body:
Name: Your Customer Name
Phone: A contact phone number
Email: Your Email address
SN#: Your TF201 Serial Number
A customer care representative or technician will take your information, confirm the status of the serial number on our server, ask you to walk through a short procedure to correct the problem. If this fix does not work they will walk you through the next series of steps to correct it.
1/25/12 Update -
One option to fix this problem is to complete a manual update process, set the unit power mode to balanced performance and screen brightness manually to 50%, and then manually update to the latest ICS build using these instructions - http://service.asus.com/TF201_fwupdate. You will need a fully charged battery and have the system plugged into AC power. After the update is completed, please ensure there is a WiFi connection available and let the system idle with an active WiFi connection (ensure the system does not go to sleep) for 15~20 minutes and then reboot. If the serial number is not available after this process, please follow these instructions:
For North American users with the Serial Number Not Found problem that we have not directly contacted during the replication testing cycle we ask that you please send the following information to [email protected] :
Subject: <TF201 SN Not Found – Your Contact Name>
Body:
Name: Your Customer Name
Phone: A contact phone number
Email: Your Email address
SN#: Your TF201 Serial Number
Process Already Completed - Manual Firmware Update to latest ICS ROM Image
A customer care representative or technician will confirm the status of the serial number on our server, contact you and might ask you to walk through a short procedure to correct the problem. If the serial number is not located, the unit will need to be returned for a replacement procedure.
2/12/2012 Update -
If North American users are still experiencing the Serial Number Not Found Problem after completing a manual update to ICS, then please send your contact information and serial number to [email protected]. If you do not hear back from Service within 48 hours, please PM me directly.
3/6/2012 Update:
I am back and will start answering messages.
Note - For those users who provided this information already based on direct contact from us, you will be notified shortly. For those users who provided their serial numbers but were not contacted by us for further testing you will need to either send the email above or call the hotline. We sincerely apologize about this inconvenience but your TF201 will be fixed shortly.

No doubt! This makes me feel so much better about my purchase. Gary we can't thank you enough for taking your personal time to help us out.
You are still traveling correct?
And a car buff to boot.....awesome!
THANKS GARY
On a Sunday no less....
I had said it takes guts for you to come on here with all the issues flying around and I stand by that. I don't have this issue but wanted to also add my thanks.
Hi Gary, thanks for trying to get to the bottom of this issue. I received my Champagne prime on Dec 24. It originally had firmware v8.8.3.23. I noticed I wasn't getting updates about a day later and have been worried about this ever since. I called Asus support and they were no help. I have manually updated to 8.8.3.29. I tried the factory reset per your instructions several times tonight with no luck. Still no serial number or ICS update. I have PM'd you the serial number for my unit. Please let me know if you need anything else from me.
Really appreciate your help with this one Gary. Hopefully you'll be able to sort a fix.
Have tried what you mentioned but still to no avail. I have PM'd you my serial number.
All the best.
Gary, I know one thing for sure. Asus need to seriously look into QC. All the problems on forums and also my first transformer prime having 3 dents on the back makes me really worried what will i receive next time.
I know you are based in US, but out of interest, are EU batches any different from US, or are they from different production line?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Going to go ahead and give this a try. Tried a reset once to no avail, but didn't wait 15 minutes with system active, so conceivable that it could work as described this time.
Will update with results.

There should be a sicker next to the charging port on the bottom.
No luck here after following the instructions.
Still reports Unknown serial number and no ICS update offered.
I was able to manually update via sd card to the latest Honeycomb version.
Will send serial, thanks for trying to solve this.
No luck with this method.
Sent you my serial number Gary.
I absolutely love the responsibility Asus is taking for this problem by actually talking to the community. I very rarely see this kind of intuitive that Gary is taking by helping his customers!
No luck with your suggested method Gary. I've sent over my SN. Thanks for trying to help!
Damn.... thas pretty cool of asus. Props
I attempted to send my SN to Gary but I do not think it went through as I am a new member, factory reset did not help my prime.

Same here. I'm not sure if my PM went through, but this procedure did not change anything for me. I still have the unknown serial number and no updates.
Factory reset and wait was not a solution, nor was trying to force the update after the wait. I have been able to manually update to 8.8.3.33 but there is currently no way for me to get ICS. Also a new member so unable to PM. Thanks for the open communication.

This may be the case for me as well. Sent a pm to Gary, but seeing zero messages in my sent messages list. Might just be that it doesnt show there until the recipient actually views it.
Anyways, Gary, if you didn't get pms from any of us who said we sent them, let us know.
You need 8 posts to be able to post links on forum. Maybe is the same for PM? But think positiv!
Good job Asus and Gary!

I got my Prime on January 16th, very happy and proud.
That was the only short period where I have been in that mood.
The more I used the Prime the more I could see that something was not as expected.
1) weak WiFi, compared to any other unit at home, and I have many and from different companies.
2) GPS did not work, (they did not have it removed from specs. yet)
3) Lot of waiting time to get ICS installed (because it was German and needs a specific firmware).
4) and most important thing, WiFi and BT does not work together, which in a tablet is like to say that "a car does not break unless you put your feet on the road to stop."
I have used HOURS on this tablet, troubleshooting, testing, reading, writing, tried 5 different firmwares, 2 different headsets, WiFi Channels, B,G,N. Reboots, resets.
Then 2 days ago, I decided to RMA mine, also after recommendaton by Gary, and ASUS Customer Service. (The latter.. in DK is poor as I never experienced before).
I have been told tuesday that I have to wait up to 48 hours, before getting ans answer, fine!.
Today at 11am the 48 hours were gone. I called and the first thing they asked me was:" what browser do you use"? I said why? I have Tablet's android, IE8 and IE9.. Why? "Ah because sometimes we have issues with RMA made on Explorer browsers."
So are you telling me that you do not receive the RMA, even though the side told me that "all was fine and was sent"?
After 10 minutes, the guy at ASUS CS found out, that nothing has been registered in their system, and he offered me to make a new one, directly.
I am so pissed of at this bunch of amateurs that I will NEVER EVER buy a nail from them.
They could not ask this question or make me aware of that issue, after I spoke to them 3 times the same day about it.
They are making fun of many and they are the less serious company I have ever handled with.
I work as Supporter.. I have some experiences with IT companies and suppliers.
This is the bottom level!
2 times I made the RMA and 2 times "all was fine according the site. I made it 2 times to be sure that I wrote the correct S/N number, as I was in doubt.
Gary if you read this, it's not excuse. Not your fault for sure, but this is out of line and I really believe that ASUS needs a HUGE Team Building, starting from your CEO and ending with you canteen people.
Tomorrow this "innocent" ASUS guy should call me to confirm the RMA is now created correctly. If this is not the case. All media in Denmark and Nothern Europe will read this and more.
Shame on ASUS, idiot me to handle with them!
sorry to hear about it. just keep on their case to make sure they get it done. good luck

I've seen Gary post in quite a few threads that weren't his which had particularly nasty attitudes toward ASUS/him. That's really more his job around here than anything IMO
Anyway, yeah, ASUS doesn't seem as organized as they should be. Especially things which are electronically filed, the information should be available to any and all relevant employees immediately upon receipt. As soon as the shipping company updates that the package has been shipped from the user up until the point it's back in my hands, ASUS reps should be able to tell me exactly what's going on and where it is. Naturally they move things in batches, but however they keep up with it is atrociously behind the times or something.

Maybe you'll feel little better knowing that ASUS Technical Support here in Poland is at the same or even worse level. I had no problem in registering my tablet for RMA but please be aware, that if you are going to RMA your Prime due to not working GPS it won't be repaired.
I decided to RMA me Prime at 9th of January and will never see it again because after one month since it has reached the Service Center in Czech Republic, ASUS Poland contacted me to say that GPS won't be fixed. They asked, if I want to start DOA procedure which should take about 3 weeks to get my money back.
We have 1st of March today and I'm still waiting... and what is really annoying, ASUS Poland is now unable to give me the exact date when my money will be returned!!!
My advice for you is to give up the RMA and request DOA, you'll save some time and health.
Gary won't help you here. I read at some thread here, that he has no way to contact with ASUS Europe. He has never replied to my PMs
Regards,
Pletwal

IE 9 is pretty good as long as you dont care about printing I am in the IT field and will use it from time to time but I do think overall Firefox is king
I'm sorry to read that you the "OP" is being ran through the ringer. I hope they get on track with your RMA. I have come to find that Asus outside of Taiwan sucks Donkey D. Asus Taiwan rocks!! They will bend over backwards to take care of their customers. If things don't work out in your favor, shoot a detailed email of your case, a long with a reasonable resoultion to Asus International.

Even IE 8 has this issue with certain printers. I'm actually just running into that issue with a customer, and they can not grasp the fact the IE is not the only portal to the internet...
Firefox is the most stable in my experience. Chrome and Maxthon are fast; Chrome's heavily unreliable and its cache likes to act weird over time, Maxthon I haven't used but for a few seconds so don't know its drawbacks.
Anyway...

..mail with UPS label arrived.
BUT it was WRONG, name and zip code to my house were not correct.
Called UPS, they could not change the info with the correct ones, and could not assure me that all could go well having the wrong address.
They suggested to call ASUS again and ask them for a new. I did it!
So now again new waiting time!
My trust in ASUS is gone, they do not do much to "re-gain it"
The unit will be sent to Chech Rep. for repair, and as I read, they probably do not fix WiFi/BT as "non faulty".
is this post a kind of therapy?

Wow, that really is impressively awful on their part. I hope you get all of this resolved in the end.
.. I thought that somebody else could be interested in knowing that ASUS is not trustworthy when things goes bad.
Service is as important as the "fancy" products you sell.
Plus I wanted to share the fact, that if you do not check, push and follow up what they do, you won't get help.
If the mods are not happy with this thread, they are allowed to close or delete it.
There are many Europeans in this forum, who cannot mail or call Gary and his team.
We in Europe are left on our own. All the messages I read from people in Europe here, seems to confirm that.
Anyway, sorry for bothering some of you.

I don't think you need to apologise at all. ASUS on the other hand owe you a rather large apology.
It seems that using the big voice and words helps.
A manager from ASUS in Sweden called me on the phone, apologizing for all the troubles.
The short story is, that they offered to fully refund the product.
Why? Because there is a 10% risk that even sending this at the Repair Center will not sove the issue. He wouldn't and couldn't tell me more, but the story is that, for some "reasons" and even though the WiFi/Bt is now a known problem, they cannot be sure to fix it.
I referred to Gary's mail to me and here in this forum about a possible solution, but yet, he COULD NOT be sure that the replacing parts will do the job. (Metal backplate still jamming everything?? This is MY guess!)
So now ASUS is creating the second RMA label, I will send it to Chech Rep., I will await what happens, and I will contact this manager at ASUS SE when I get it back.
Solved? peace of mind and enjoying finally this device
Not Solved? Refund.

*****ing is not what I wish, I like information, competence and support.
I have a tablet for 629€, with issues, they know it, and they should fix it.
I am not fishing about other stuff, just a working tablet.
All this caos is due to the fact that several people either know a little, or tell me different things about same question
Anyway. They will have another chance to act correctly, and I am in touch with a person, who can and will try to help.
Let's see how it goes in "Czech Rep. repair centre".

It is real, I don't know what regions it is a applicable to though. I do know I was able to apply for one of these GPS units from their website. I live in the US though.
To get a hold of said GPS offer go to http://vip.asus.com/
Once there, register an account then register your tablet. After you register your tablet, they will automatically redirect you to a page asking for your shipping information. Once you've filled out your shipping information click 'Submit' at the bottom of the application.
I just wanted to see a picture of it, that's all....
ASUS is getting tons of good publicity over this. The story is covered on all major tech sites now. VERY surprising how fast word travels on tech news. Exciting times for prime.

Hey Stewart,
I've been following that other thread (the one that vanished) since it popped up, and a lot of the pages were full of comments exactly like yours.
It appeared to me that some people were able to fill out a form on the Asus site last night, but after a certain point no one was getting the registration page any longer. Some people had tried calling customer service, and most reported back that the person they spoke to either didn't know what they were talking about, or knew what they were referencing but that it wasn't official yet so there was nothing they could really do (some took contact info down, but who knows about what the follow-up will be for that).
Now that the whole thread has disappeared, and especially with demandarin's comments on the fact it vanished, my general sense is that the whole thing just came out too early, before Asus had everything in place to start taking in all of the requests. It sounds like it should all be made official soon though, and my guess would be that they will put out info in the media and through this site as to how to go about sending in your info then.
So I wouldn't worry about it now. Track some of the threads (or just check in with Gary Key's unofficial post updates), and join the rest of us in the waiting game...
As said above, duplicate thread.
Hi!
Looks like there will be no GPS dongle for Italian customers. ASUS Italia's facebook page just stated the following, in reply to someone who couldn't select "Italy" as his shipment address in his registration form:
"Guys we confirm that the initiative is reserved for those territories where Prime was marketed with GPS in the product specifications. So mainly USA and Taiwan. In Italy, Prime was marketed with a GPS locator, and not with a" Full GPS", which feature we believeis useless for a tablet. People who bought Prime did so with the understanding that GPS is not present, therefore there were no unfulfilled promises or misleading statements from our side. So, we do not understand the reason of your criticism, Riccardo. Moreover, the satisfaction of users who bought Prime is very high, in sharp contrast with what you say. It means that the product performs its function very well."
Really?!?!
I have already written to Engadget reporting their statement, hopefully they'll publish it. Any other idea?
Also, if you live in any other country, and you've been told that the GPS dongle won't be available, please post a one-liner in this thread.
Thank you!

If they do that.... they will have soooooooo many extremely angry customers, that the natural reaction would be to hate the brand for life and preach to the universe how horrible that company is... so I guess it can't be true, and if it is, they for sure should reconsider this, as it is a very bad PR action, putting TF201 users in different classes... you are first class if you are from USA or TW, the rest, you are second class... nah it would be PR SUICIDE!!!
seems like there is an update with another link to get the gps dongle~

They are probably doing it to cut costs, limit the amount of people they have to give a GPS dongle, As the updates say it's no longer limited to the USA and Taiwan, I've ordered mine and I am in the UK

Yeah, their statement about US and Taiwan was definitely wrong, but Italian customers still can't order it.
Iam in Greece and I was allowed to apply ,does that mean they will not send it???
yeah, there's actually alot of confusion going on with who can get it and who can't. seems like the only ones who cat get it at the moment is Italy.
they should just make it available for everyone and make everyone happy. limiting it to only certain countries or whatever will not be a good PR move.

Thank you!

Lol.
I registered even if I know I won't use it. A Wifi/3g dongle is more useful to me.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium HD app
If any of you peeps in Italy need confirmation that Asus STATED that the dongle was for ALL TFP users give me a shout as I have saved the webpage that states this from the Asus VIP site.

Yes, that's exactly what it means...
I must have written something *really* bad on the ASUS Italia page, because they've now banned me!
All I did was putting together a collection of sentences copied and pasted from their comments to the Transformer Prime Italian users who were complaining because they won't get the dongle. Here is a translation of some of them, for your delight:
"It was clearly communicated that GPS was not in the spec list for the product. Therefore, we don't have anything to explain to anyone."
"We don't need to hide ourselves behind justifications"
"The fact that so many people see a red sky doesn't mean that the sky is actually red. It could mean that the percentage of daltonic people is high "
"Spamming is not good, nor is the bull**** that is filling up this thread"
"Inform yourselves, please. Then you can speak "
"It sounds like a subject with no grounds whatsoever."
"A customer is not always right, if he's an idiot"

If you are near Milan you could drop in on the Asus Design Week (paid for by the refusal to issue dongles?) or if you are unable to make it, take a trip to http://milandesignweek2011.asus.com/archives/ where you will find the email addresses of Asus public relations' staff - 1 from asus.it and the other asus.com. Tell them you will be dropping in for a chat
