Best Android tab for college under 200 bucks? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to be cheap as possible. Seen a couple places talking about Polaroid ICS factory rooted tab at big lots for 99 bucks. Mom told me about it too . Anyone know if out worth getting? open to suggestions here too for good tab.... Cheap good tab.

Take a look at http://reviews.cnet.com/2733-3126_7-936-5.html for a small list. They're not in the range of the Polaroid, but they're pretty reliable.

The Polaroid is only 800x480 at 7", I imagine you'll be doing some reading on it. The Nook Color and Kindle Fire are both 1024x600 at 7". The Polaroid has the advantage of having ICS preloaded, where as the other 2 have only unofficial ROMs.

I'd go with the newest Samsung galaxy tab 7. It is around $250 so a bit out of your price range, but if you could get together the money for it I would definitely reccomend you get it or the Kindle Fire.

Thanks alt for Al the suggestions... Have been looking in craigslist but pit in sticks where I live the two closest cities are to far right now and would like new with some warranty.

Acer A100 best tab i swear i loved it you can pick up below 200

For a new tab at 200 your looking at Kindle Fire. You can root and mall it as an android tab for full use of Play store and retains Kindle functionality.

Look on Craigslist!! I would only go for brands you know avoid coby and archos!!! And get a heat sensitive screen NOT pressure sensitive ..... these of course are all my opinions.

What is wrong with a Archos? Mine performs fantastic!
Oh and touch screens aren't "heat" sensitive, they rely on the electrical impulses of your body to detect your touches.

Depending on what you are looking for in a tablet, the polaroid (or all other $99 tablets ftm) will be a waste of your money. Tablets that inexpensive are not up to par with google's standards, and therefore, are not "google certified." These tablets will not have the best hardware, or even the play store/android market. They will have custom markets (applibs, amazon marketplace) The samsung galaxy tab 2 is a great tablet for the price, but if you are wanting to save a little bit more, you can try looking up archos online. They are a huge brand in europe (supposedly) and seem to function fairly well. Not to mention they are about the least expensive "google certified" tablets I have seen out there. Good luck. =D

Like I said not even sure if I am getting one now.. If I do I think I want a 10" screen and I have been looking on craigslist. Just nothing is within price range cuz I NEED money to pay for this coming semester. I'm transferring top ttu in Cookeville so if anyone knows some cheap apartments or something with internet included let me know

I have the Asus Transformer but it is more than $200. That is not much for a tablet but might check out the new Kindle Fire. Runs Android and looks like it has a lot of potential. Retails for $200.
I've actually heard some pretty decent reviews on the Kindle. But I haven't personally played with one yet. I know Coby has some, but they are kinda meh, you get what you pay for, ya know?

Samsung has the Galaxy Tab 7.0" for $300 with the Android 2.3.3 and I think Coby has a 10" with Android 2.3.3 as well for $300. But from what I saw, you're gonna be spending more to get the Tablet that comes with Honeycomb all ready installed. Like $400 and up.
I just bought 32 Archos 80 G9s for a research study. I am very happy with them, but they are a little above your price point. They are not iPad quality, obviously, but they are the best bang for the buck - in my opinion.

It does have an mini hdmi out. Here are the full specs:

They also have a 10.1 inch for $369. You can also up the internal memory for a few dollars more, but it has an SDcard slot, so I figure I can just by a large flash memory card if I need more storage.
By the way, their office is in Colorado, they speak perfect English, and their customer service was great! They also gave me a very good deal on the 32 devices that I bought. I'm a happy camper.

I LOVE MY FLYER! best tab out in my opinion. The Kindle Fire has too many "Amazon only" restrictions, making it just like the iPad...
Pew! Pew! Pew! From my Mo-Pho!
http://android-gz.com
Remember, though... no tablet smaller than ~10" runs Real Honeycomb -- officially, unofficially, or otherwise. Google has never released the source, and has stated that they never will. I'm sure it'll get leaked eventually and/or ICS will make its way to "substandard" tablets sold without Honeycomb... but you'll probably be stuck waiting AT LEAST six months for that to even be a possibility.
If you're buying it to use as a tablet, that might not matter. If you're buying it to develop and test tablet-oriented apps on a real device, it's probably a deal-breaker (plenty of stuff that runs perfectly well under Froyo or Gingerbread on a low end tablet breaks catastrophically on a real Honeycomb tablet).
One other note -- if cases (especially layered or bumper-type cases a-la Otterbox) are important to you, find a case you like BEFORE you commit to buying a tablet. Some tablets, like the Toshiba Thrive, are awesomely appealing, but don't have a single bumper/otterbox-type case available, and none on the radar either.
As MoPho owners, there's an obvious family appeal of the Xoom... but be warned, it has the exact same "black crush" problem that the Photon does (in fact, that was what originally tipped me off that the Photon's black crush problem is almost certainly the result of a bad 24-bit to 16-bit quantization error from an incorrect gamma curve somewhere along the pipeline, and NOT a problem with the screen itself).
Also, if you use Graffiti, be aware that the Xoom's Graffiti support sucks. As far as I can tell, the Xoom is a lot more aggressive about slowing down the CPU than the Photon is, and (like HTC) blindly assumes that a soft input area is used for slow, purposeful taps instead of high-precision motion tracking. Let me put it this way... on my ancient 711MHz-overclocked Hero w/CM7 and scaling disabled so it runs in "Performance" mode, Graffiti is butter smooth and effortlessly accurate. On my Photon, it's decent (say, 99.5% accurate). On my Xoom, it's borderline unusable -- maybe 97% accuracy under the best conditions, and with visible lag (the underlaid outline tracing my finger path lags the finger itself by about 300ms and ~1cm).
Know that most tablets won't charge from USB, but some will "limp" and draw power from usb when available (ie, they won't charge the battery, but they won't really drain it further when connected via USB).
Take it with a pound of salt, but I've heard the Thrive's glass is more vulnerable to breakage than other tablets. On the other hand, the Thrive has a nice, wide, thumb-friendly bezel to grab. The Xoom's bezel is about a half centimeter narrower than I'd really consider to be ideal.
If you can wait 5 weeks, I can almost guarantee you'll be able to get a real Honeycomb tablet from SOMEWHERE for $249 or less on Adam Smith Day (the day after Thanksgiving, when Americans gather in our cathedrals of commerce and celebrate capitalism by spending money like there's no tomorrow...)
The Acer Iconia A 100 does run an official version of Honeycomb and it's a 7 inch tablet.

Who here uses both a Tablet and the Note at home?

Just curious those of you that replaced their Android/iPad or no longer use it since they got the Note.
I am gonna get a Transformer Prime today but wandering if i will be overwhelmed with the Prime and Note. Or figuring if its necessary especially after the 650 i dropped on the Note lol.
I love my Note especially on the go. But its nice to have that extra real estate at home and of course more gadgets. But was debating $650 with the dock is expensive. But i currently have no laptop or netbook and the Prime seems.perfect for my needs.
I basically browse web, play nes and snes emulators. Email, root and Rom hacks. Obviously id take advantage of the Tegra 3 and game more.

I rarely use my iPad 2 at home now.
I too am buying a Transformer Prime today from gamestop.
and i have a Note, and a Laptop at that( Tech nut) but i dont see why it would be over whelming. i like you will be using the Prime for home and when in the car my kids and play on it in the back seat. and my note is my daily driver.
the money issue, is not a big deal for me anymore, but i can see how that would make u want to wait or quesiton the want to get one. the Note can suffice for your needs if your strapped thats for sure.
but i must have both, having given my 10.1 galaxy tab to my mom....i want a replacement.

Just about reaching a full day with my Note and I realized today I used my iPad about 1/4 as much as I typically would.
I found the following: 1) Note is always with me, so its more convenient than the iPad 2) I am typically referencing something else on my Note so its faster to continue using it for the next task. 3) Of course right now there is a newness factor to it but overall I still think I find it more convenient to grab than the iPad.
I will have to see what my behaviors are in the future but for now I don't think my iPad is going to get much use.

You might want to look into the PS Vita if you're looking to game on the fly...
IMO, the note can duplicate MUCH of the functionality of the TPrime. All you would need is the MHL adapter to connect to a bigger display (TV/LCD monitor), bluetooth input devices and you're good to go.
I currently have the (not counting computers/laptops) ipad 2, Acer A100 7" tablet, and recently purchased the Vita - specifically because I found smartphone/tablet games lacking in depth.

I almost never use my GNote at home unless it is for phone calls. I use my macbook or if watching netflix my ipad. I mean the GNote screen is great but not when I have 13 and 10 inch screens at home...or a 24 inch desktop
I had an iPad 2 (now sold, maybe getting iPad 3 later) and hardly used it since I bought my Note. Use an iPhone 4s for on the go phone so Note pretty much acts like a mini tab.
Actually ive been reading great reviews on the Acer A200. Especially for the $350 price mark and it just got Android 4.0 ICS. Really pondering going with something like this.
Acer A200 10.1" $350
PS Vita Bundle $300
Also have a BB $30 gift card. So makes it actually $620 total.
Same price as if i got the Transformer Prime & the Dock for $650. Hmmmmm. Honestly Tegra 3 is awesome but i do most of my gaming on Xbox and would rather have a Vita for gaming and use the tablet for NES, SNES & N64 emulation.
Still rocking my Xoom with the Bugless Beast ICS ROM, PS Vita First Edition Bundle and my Note are my main electronic devices.

Yeah, at $420.00 its very tempting.
I think the closer we get to release date of the 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Note, the more the prices on the HTC Jetstream will drop.
But the updated news on Samsung redesigned and hardware upspec, it may be worth the wait. The new chip speed is the fastest on the tablet market. They are really taking on iPad 3 and I believe like many others, they will have the greatest impact on the market with this new device, with stylus to boot !
Check this site with some benchmarks.
http://www.androidauthority.com/rumor-galaxy-note-10-1-mali-t-604-gpu-benchmark-85727/
...."Based on that and on the amazing scores obtained by the device, we can speculate that Samsung will replace the Mali 400 MP with the new Mali T-604 GPU, a graphics chip that has never been used in a device before. ARM, the designer of both the Mali 400 MP and the Mali T-604 GPUs, claims that the new graphics circuit is 5 times as powerful as the old one, which itself was pretty snappy."

I have not used the galaxy tab 10.1, but have used an adonit on a tablet PC. The most challenging part is that with a normal capacitive touch screen, it will not reject you palm touches as you write. When writing on a notepad, you normally rest part of your hand on the actual notepad.
When using an adonit (or even one of the lesser capacitive pens) on a normal capacitive screen, you will need to hold your hand up, off of the screen -- otherwise, when you touch the screen with your hand, it can conflict with the writing. Having said this, there are some note taking ap's that can restrict the writing area, such that they ignore input on parts of the screen, usually where one's wrist would lie.
My wife has an ipad and uses a capacitive touch pen to take notes -- I forget which note taking application she uses, but she spent some time looking at the different options until she found one she likes for taking notes in meetings that we attend. She cannot take notes as fast I can on my tablet (a Samsung Slate 7), which has an active digitizer that rejects the 'noise' from my palm, once the pen is actively writing. I have used the adonit on the slate as well--while it does better than a normal stubby capacitive pen, it does not keep up with the pen that works with the digitizer.
I picked one up on eBay too for $265.
It was a nice upgrade from the EVO View. I like the larger 10.1 inch screen. But man is this thing heavy and awkward to read in bed.
At least it will hold me over till my next tablet which should hopefully be a 10.1 inch running ICS or Jelly Bean and it should be much much much lighter. The Asus Transformer Infinity looks like it is going to be nice but probably very pricey. And I'm going to miss HTC pen input. I really wish that HTC returns to making a followup tablet.
ill trade u my new galaxy 10.1 4g tab for it. its really light lol

There have been ARMv7 ICS 7" capacitive tablets for around $100 to $120 on sale. One of those should work.

Looking for a tablet. 10.1 been out for 11 months now. Is it outdated? I'm looking at this tablet because I trust Samsung to deliver quality products and 10.1 has been the most popular tablet I've read about.
Screen size, and android version are the most important to me.

Depends on what price your getting it for. I got a 32gb wifi one for £270 which is about $350 I think. If ics is really important and you need it NOW without rooting then it isn't for you, depending on how much you have to spend the tf201 might be better, the tf300 I heard is good but it's not available in the UK so I can't vouch for it. You could consider the tab 2 as well but in reality it probably slightly worse than the og tab sans ics!
Since your on xda I take it you care about the development aspect which probably means that the only real manufacturers you should consider would be Samsung, Asus, Archos and Motorola. Development on the acer, Toshiba, htc tabs etc are not nearly as active as others.

I think it all depends on what your real need/expectation. I had an ASUS Transformer Prime that was far superior in most ways to the Gtab, but did not hold onto the WiFi signal well and the promised GPS, as designed, did not function. Those were two very important factors for me and I replaced the Prime with the Galaxy Tab.
The tab is slower, no ICS (yet), poorer screen touch sensitivity, fingerprints pile up in a hurry, and the cameras are not nearly as nice. BUT, for the need I have, the Prime didn't cut it and I'm much happier with the Samsung.
Just wish ICS would get here. I'm on the AOKP releases but it sure would be nice to have a working camera. (I know, I have a smart phone for that)
Not sure where you live but, in the states the galaxy tab 2 10.1 is out and retails at $400 for the 16gb wifi only version. I am sure that deals can be found for a first generation gtab, but the 16gb wifi version starts at $450.
The new one adds an SD card slot and a universal ir remote. I think the screen is close to the same if the same and the processor is pretty close too. The speakers face forward on the new one. That does seem to make a difference. Of course, the gtab2 comes with ics. The gtab1 will eventually get ics but who knows when.
Asus does have the tf-300 out at $400. Specs on paper are better than the gtab2. Personally, I'd go with a gtab2 but that is because I watch movies on my tab. I believe the Asus does have stereo speakers but they are right next to one another. The Asus does blow away the gtab2 in benchmarks but for my uses I don't see a noticeable difference. IMHO the screens on the gtab's are nicer too.

When I was considering buying my gtab my shortlisted tabs for my pricepoint were:
Archos G9 101
Moto Xoom
Asus TF101
Samsung Gtab
Toshiba Thrive
I ignored the Archos because it looked crap, I ignored the xoom & transformer because they were too heavy, thick & bulky and I ignored the thrive because it was stuck in the legacy boards. That was my reasoning!

I just picked up a mint condition 16GB for $250 on Craigslist locally. I think, at that price point, it's still a very valid option if you're in the market.
Go for the tf300. Its a generation ahead.
Oh and it is out in the UK.

Looking for a tablet. 10.1 been out for 11 months now. Is it outdated? I'm looking at this tablet because I trust Samsung to deliver quality products and 10.1 has been the most popular tablet I've read about.
Screen size, and android version are the most important to me.

Popular? Yes.
Why? Cause samsung.

I would not buy again, because of the unbelievable slowness of delivering updates by Samsung.
