I figured that this would be the best place to get some options. I have a Captivate and found that I am eligible for an upgrade. It looks like I could go for the HTC One X in a few days but with that comes the uncertainty of how 3rd party development will progress. I could go for the SGS III, but I'm not quite convinced.
So, how's the SGS 2? Is it still worth the consideration at this point? Does the SGS 2 have as strong or better 3rd party development than the SGS phones?

As a Captivate user, I'm guessing you're on AT&T?
It may be important to note that an upgrade to the AT&T variant of the Galaxy SII is actually the SGH-I777, NOT the GT-I9100.
These two phones are VERY similar, but not the same... while your question is general enough that the opinions of anyone who answers this thread might be valid, this is important information to you if you actually do end up getting the phone, and intend on flashing firmware or kernels.
If you want more accurate opinions and answers to your AT&T GS2 questions, you may want to consider posting in that forum instead.

Hey guys I recently came to att from sprint. I had their galaxy s2 version but decided to get the kg thrill... I have no complaints about the phone except their is no development happening. Should I go ahead and get the att sg2? Is it worth it?

What do you expect people to say when you ask this question in the AT&T Galaxy S2 forum?
I think you already made up your mind and just want to hear some form of confirmation...
So here it is: Yes, Galaxy S2 is great!
I used the LG Thrill for a month before exchange the the SG2. Yes much much better except no 3-crappy-D

Honestly I had made up mind...lol.... I just wanted to know if anyone who had the thrill found any significant difference....I only had my sg2 from sprint for about 2 weeks....
I'd like to ask a question as well without threadjacking too much, but I didnt want to make a new thread. I know this is a SGSII forum, but what do you guys think of the SGSII vs. the Samsung Infuse 4G? Very similar phones, my wife has an Infuse already. Is it worth the jump in $ for the SGSII?
I chose the Thrill for a few reasons, cheaper, dual channel RAM, dedicated HDMI port with included cable, and 3D. Check my posted from a week or two ago, I defended this decision on the sgs and Thrill forums.
After three weeks, unable to find a solution to my stereo Bluetooth issues that wasn't temporary, and when gtg left I bounced. The Thrill is a solid phone, it had great specs, and has amazing potential, but I'm not a dev and I cannot tap into that potential without a dev. When all the rats are jumping off a ship it makes you wonder if you should stay. Not that I am calling devs rats, but they are more in tune with the situation than an end user.
Immediately I did not regret jumping to the SGS II. Its faster, no doubt, 1GB RAM seems to outperform 512 of the faster variety. I prefer TouchWiz, opposed to what LG was running. Here there was two ROMs within a week of launch. There's another, and a few other devs are still working an yet to be releases ROMs. Here I am eating my humble pie. I would not go back. The sgs ii feels amazing in hand, its noticibly lighter and thinner. I thought 3D was cool (and seemed batter than the EVOs), but the viewing angles are narrow, and I just didn't use it except to show other people.
If in doubt go into a store and just use the SGS II for a few minutes, I don't think the decision will be hard once you get one in your hands.

Glad you asked because I wanted to know the same... it would only be an extra 100 for me to upgrade to sg2 and nothing to get the infuse...

I had the Infuse prior to my GS2 and I definitely think it's worth the bump in price. I loved the Infuse don't get me wrong, but the GS2 is really a great bump in every aspect.

My GF has the Infuse and it's a good device. I think it's worth the price bump to get the GS2 (even more so when the already decent development gets even better). RAM is the most significant point to me. Personally, 512mb is not enough. Otherwise, I'd be fine with the Infuse. The GS2 projects to the future a little better as well.

Of course. I don't even take the Thrill seriously.
I had the infuse and sold it the day this came out. The development of already way ahead. And GTG is here too now.

All I can tell you is that the SG II is the best phone I have ever owned. As too if you should switch or not that depends on what you want out of your phone. If the Thrill does everything you want it too, I guess i would say stay with it.
Personally I have tried the Thrill and I think the SG II is just a better phone, but that is only MY opinion.

i flash that **** Moto Droid RAZR in the toilet dude is the worst phone ever no matter how thin it is look at the specs and stop posting motos crap stuff in here, this place belong to samsung
Two things:
1) It has a Pentile display = fail
2) Moto sucks at s/w. Say anything you want about Samsung but they do a great job optimizing s/w for better performance. The h/w accelerated browser of the SGS2 is an example. Compare the HTC Amaze and T-Mobile SGS2 which are almost identical h/w wise. The Samsung blows the HTC away.
Once Google's s/w knowledge starts making an impact at Motorola I may look at them again. But I have no interest in any of their current devices.
Except for the huge software failure the sgs was.
At least they redeemed themselves by making the software on the sgs 2 the best in terms of performance.
Motorola just doesn't learn... locked bootloader.

I have an SGS and whilst the first couple of firmwares did have this lag it has been non-existent on the device using the stock firmware for a while now. I've never used a lagfix on my SGS.
I wonder how long it is before they get stamped on for falsely claiming that it's the thinnest? Samsung got slapped down for trying the same in the UK, and rightly so. The SGS2 has a pretty big hump at the bottom and the new Moto is no different.
Other than the bootloader, which will likely not matter within a month, it looks like a pretty good phone.
Other than the rather blatant trolling (surely a mod will move it soon), why not quit the hating and let it stand for itself?

No one can make you choose which one to use but yourself! Why the need to make another unnecessary post regarding this subject is beyond me. The i777 has a 90-95 commonality between it and the i9100 OG SGS2 meaning roms and such are generally very simple to port over. The developers section for the i777 is much, much more established than the i727SR.
If you've got LTE in your area and you like your battery to zap in a few hours than by all means get it. Studies and articles are everywhere on the internet about how the hardware in our i777 far surpasses that which is in the skyrocket.
You noobs need to learn to use the search function.. these are all SGS2i777 vs the SkyRocket..

AT&T currently doesn't have a phone that is powerful as the OG Galaxy SII. Sure there is the Note and SkyRocket but they aren't as powerful. I would like to know if this phone is still selling strong. I just bought one. But anyway, this seems to be the best phone AT&T has ever had. Maybe the iPhone 4s comes in second? What do you think?

Seems that everyone else doesn't want to play nice so I'll add my own opinion. I think that the only phone that will be able to give our phone a decent challenge will be the HTC One X when it comes to AT&T supposedly in April. It looks to be a pretty nice phone, hopefully AT&T doesn't mangle it too bad.

Will agree with this one, the only problem some of the other phones that AT&T carries is that they simply bloat them to death and it kind of gives the phones a bad rap when reviewed by alot of the review sites.
Would love to see a review where the majority of the phones are benched/reviewed side by side with stock firmware/rom's vs rooted/custom rom's
I came from a Motorola Atrix to this and it was a definite upgrade. Great phone, and imo atleast for NOW, its the best. I'm sure something will come along soon and trump it, but till then, we're the kings of the mountain.

It does look like a nice phone, and I would have probably gotten it as a 2nd phone if it had a micro sd slot. the S4 chip seems impressive, but I'm sure the next exynos chip will crush it though once it's released
Coming from HTC Dream (G1), it is a step up for me for SGSII. But of couse, AT&T screwed it up with how they managed this device (not reconized it as 4G..DUH!!!). HTC One X seem to be the up to the task to match up to SGSII. But then we'll have to see.
Well coming from an iPhone and inspire this way way way better then any phone I have ever seen att carry.like mention before the HTC one XL may be the only phone to challenge this one(maybe the rumored galaxy s3 ) but not being able to remove the battery is one of its downfalls .
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
Yeah the One X looks like the first HTC phone in a while that could hold up against the Samsung.
The GS III could be earlier this year than last year. If the att variant is as close to the international as the i777 was to the i9100, then the One X will be back-seated quick.
But, the Captivate is still pretty strong after two years. Heck, they had ICS before we did. I would guess the i777 will continue to be popular for about the same timeframe, 2 years.

The SD card slot isn't too big of a deal to me because of the fact that the phone should be coming with a 32GB internal storage which is what my S2 has with the SD card added. The non removable battery could be more of a problem if it has the typical HTC battery life. If I didn't have my S2 right now and was ready for an upgrade I'd definitely give the One X a chance.
Just read the specs on HTC One, unless I missed something, it looks like HTC made the display .2" bigger than the GSGII Skyrocket just so they don't look like they are behind Samsung. Ya it is a nice phone but not nice enough to leave SGSII.
Hi, I know there are probably a lot of threads like this, but I really need some help deciding here. Right now I am on Verizon and I have some crappy slider phone and have never owned a smartphone before. I own an iPod Touch and Nexus 7 so I know how both IOS and Android are. Personally, I prefer android which is why I decided to originally get the Galaxy S4. Today, I heard many stories of how the HTC One might be making its way to Verizon. I need you guys to help me decide if it is worth it to wait on the possibility of the HTC One coming to Verizon or just get the GS4 right away. Never owning a smartphone before makes me very impatient, which is sort of a problem.
Basically, is there any chance of the One coming to Verizon in your opinion, and if so, when do you think it will happen, and is it worth the wait? I also should note that I like to root and install custom roms, so if you think a certain phone will have better rom support over the other, let me know. Thank you and I look forward to your responses.
Edit: I had a chat session with Best Buy Mobile and when I asked if the One will be coming to Verizon, this was their response. I am not sure if they are reliable, but since they do work with Verizon, I kinda got some trust in them. Here is the screen shot. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1484678/Proof.PNG

Right now there's nothing saying the phone will come to Verizon, for sure. Chances are 50/50 on whether it will or won't. Waiting for it to happen might be a fruitless effort.
HTC generally allows unlocking of their devices with a tool (straight from them). That's great, but the Galaxy S4 has already been unlocked...so it's kind of a non-issue. Rooting and custom roms can be done now, very easily. I'd say just pick up a GS4 and enjoy it.

Thanks for your input, I will keep those reasons in mind. I updated the topic with a conversation I had with Best Buy Mobile.
The S4 will have much more support for custom roms. I hear there are some build quality issues with the HTC One. I have the S4 on Verizon and if we had the One in Black I'd buy that too However, I have more confidence in the S4 with quality control and support.
I'm hoping T-Mobile gets the One in Black because I will get it and use that as my work cell I love the feel of a premium handset in my hand like the iPhone 5. That's the ONLY reason I am considering the One as a future purchase. The feel of it.

Th HTC One obviously has a superior hand feel and design. Sense vs TouchWiz is a toss up to me, as they are both abominations in my mind.
However, the feel and industrial design of the S4 is not nearly as bad as I'd anticipated. It's definitely do-able for most users.
The big deciding factor for me, what eliminated the HTC One from contention, is the battery life in the GS4. By all accounts I've read, the battery life is considerably superior on the Samsung phone. My own experience in the short time that I've had this phone backs up those accounts - it lasts for quite a long time.

The deciding factor for me was lack of a user-replaceable battery in the One, and no SD card slot. S4 has both those, so, easy decision
