ok so i finally rooted my prime but then i edited the build prop and bricked it. i accidentally wiped all data thinking it would unbrick but didnt work. i finally unbricked it but now i lost all my camera pictures and videos i had. is there any way i can recover them? i am rooted and locked bootloader.
Go look for recovery software online and hope. Most likely you should be able to if you didn't format it.

i did the power and volume down thingy and i selected the option that deletes all data.
Unless you did a fat 32 format then you should be able to recover them with an app called undelete beta. It's in the market but you gotta be rooted which you should be if your an xda'er
I tried the undelete app and it only reads my SD card. I was wondering if they were in a folder that I can go In to with root explorer and save them. Maybe cache?

Background story:
On New Year's Eve my good friend's iPhone 5S got stolen out of his pocket in a crowded club.
So I lent him my phone and we logged into iCloud using the Chrome Browser and triggered the wipe of the iPhone.
I offered him to call the credit card company and such if he had delicate data stored on the phone. But he refused...he trusts Apple's iCloud wipe routine and said he tested it at home and the phone was completely empty after that.
And he was surprisingly calm during the whole situation.
Okay he pays for insurance that covers a stolen phone, but I would have totally freaked out about my data...account logins, stored files and pictures, evernote notes, dropbox files etc.
My experience with the Android remote wipe:
Last evening I wanted to give it a try on my Android phone. So I pulled all the data that was on my phone and performed a nandroid-Backup of the system-files within TWRP and backed up my apps and data using TitaniumBackup.
And then I tried the Android Device Manager, which I had activated since it got released somewhen 2013, but never really tested more than the "localize" and "ring phone" functions.
Just yesterday I noticed the new "lock screen" function. Which is great, but I have always been using pattern locks anyway (triggered by Tasker, if my Wifi is not near). It's still nice to have and works like a charm (if the phone is connected to the internet).
So in addition I ordered my phone to get wiped. And it did what it said...it booted into Recovery and performed a factory reset / full-wipe.
But still all the data on the virtual sdcard was accessible after entering the SIM's pin code (I assume switching SIMs wouldn't change that) and setting up a new user profile. I know that it displays a warning that sdcards might not be wiped, during the process, but I thought this was referring to additional physical "microSD" storage. How wrong I was.
So all my pictures and stored files were fully accessible from the new user account.
If you store your unencrypted TitaniumBackup files on there the thief could easily restore them.
So encrypt them!
I was a bit shocked, to be honest.
And especially the fact that someone can access my phone's files without even knowing the lockscreen pattern/pin by simply booting into recovery bugs me.
Does encrypting the phone help in this situation?
Are there any drawbacks? I guess the speed and overall performance will decrease?
How can I protect the Recovery (I've got a HTC ONE, which is S-OFF'd and the bootloader unlocked via htcdev.com)?
Should I reflash the stock-recovery after flashing a CustomROM to at least make the thief require to reinstall the custom-recovery?
What other ways are there to protect the phone's data?
I don't let ADB turned on. (But this doesn't affect getting into recovery by rebooting.)
I don't keep nandroid/TitaniumBackup Backups on the phone. I pull them immediately onto a local computer after creation and delete them on the phone.

To me booting the phone into recovery, hooking it up to any computer and using ADB to pull the sdcard's files is the most concerning security loop-hole. What am I saying...it's a shining and welcoming entrance with neon-signs all around it like a casino.
And exactly this is what taking my phone with me feels like, after the experience described above: GAMBLING...

PS: If you want to try the wipe with the Android device manger yourself, be prepared that restoring the nandroid-Backup won't be possible! After a short while the phone will reboot itself and get wiped again.
The only way to restore the phone's former state was to restore the apps backups using TitaniumBackup in my case. Unfortunately some settings won't get restored, so I had to reenter all my mail accounts.
Just be prepared that it takes some time

To my misfortune today, I found that all the photos I've taken on my phone with the exception of today's are wiped. Is there a way for me to recover the data? This is a very serious problem as I am in Paris on a trip... thank you all in advance for all your help, and before someone says whether or not I wiped the photos, no, I didn't do any sort of accidental user input to wipe anything...
That's odd. I'm not sure. Do you use Google photos or other service as a backup?

After this impromptu data loss happened, I just set it up again, but it's too late for those lost photos. I don't think it's a hardware corruption on the SD card because my music and gameboy ROMs are intact. I think something in the software just wiped all the photos up to a certain point, that point being the last day of my trip. Anything before it is gone.

I'm not saying it's impossible that they're deleted, but it's not a very common thing to happen... Did you check that they're not locked in the stock gallery or haven't been renamed to a different file type?
As far as I'm aware, you can't restore deleted files without root.
I just got my photos back using Dr. Fone, root is required to pull the photos straight off but I just took out the SD card and the program can attempt to pull the photos off directly. Out if my 700+ photos only about 20 were permanently corrupted. I totally didn't expect this to happen and I am now curious whether this was Android's fault or LG's. I did have to pay 50 dollars for Dr. Fone.
It is also possible, since you're stating that you were using an SD card, that the card got corrupted. In that case it's not a fault of the phone, most likely

Good point, but I'd expect corruption to wipe more than just my photos. I say this because I am storing my music on the phone too, and all that as well as my PSP and Gameboy ROMs are still completely intact. It's like the phone just decided to wipe all my photos up to a certain point.
So I guess a fair warning to all, use some kind of background backup service like Google Photos.

Corruption can happen in various forms. It is completely possible that your file table sectors got corrupted, essentially "deleting" your Photos folder.
There's loads of programs you can use to recover deleted files from drives. This is a good place to start but there are tons. Just be careful where you download them from.

Yes the problem is the delete icon when you open up the gallery, you can miss one delete of a pic and mistakenly hit select all and boom all pics gone, happened to me on a trip with my g3 i didn't notice it in the spur of the moment taking pictures and when i tried to show of my awesome shots i noticed i deleted alllll of my pics and they were a looooot and i tried to recover them but most got corrupted and the only saved ones were the thumbnail cache for the real pics rendering them useless since they were small
What do you use to back up and restore to PC? I tried Wondershare Mobile trans but it sticks at a certain point and I have to cancel and it takes hours and I lose progress! Any info on what others are using for backup tp PC would be great!

There is a bit of a learning curve to set it up as you want to,but once you do get the hang of it you can back up all the usual things (contacts,calendars,photos,music,etc)
Everything on my unrooted 10+ is backed up to the SD card which I use as a data drive and store all critical data there. The SD card is backed up to the PC data drive and a seperate hdd stored remotely. Critical bookmarks are saved on Colornote which is 3X backup.
Smartswitch is used for some backup and apps like Poweramp have their own backup files.
All apks and updates are backed up with ApkExport as well; no Playstore or cloud crap needed for a full restore. I can do a full restore with no external sources needed.
After 2 forced reloads I streamlined the process... with over 349 gb of data, the data drive saves hours of uploading from the PC.
Implement a complete plan now before you need it and have triple redundancy in place.
Only two types of data users; those who have lost data and those that will.
Crashes both software/hardware caused are mostly unpredictable and can happen at any moment.
The 10+ is rock solid stable but no OS is completely impervious to poorly written apks and malware. Be prepared... or suffer.

Better stay away from their software. Too heavy and bad programming in general. Also backups can be restored only if you buy the s*it...
Better just take an attitude that nothing is that important. Tons of stuff but I don't have backups at all. If it goes it goes. Before computers how people managed to live at all without them...

This is my first post here. I did some searching and didn't find a direct answer to this scenario, but my apologies if I missed something.
Recently I used my PC to move files from my phone's internal storage onto a microSD card that was mounted in the device. I used the cut & paste function in Windows explorer (didn't occur to me that I could do it on the phone itself), and did this in batches. Unfortunately since that time I've discovered some of the files are corrupted--they have the appropriate size, but can't be opened. Perhaps there is a way to analyze the file structure of the JPEG to see if a byte is missing, but aside from that, I'm interested if I can run TestDisk on the internal phone storage in some way to see if the files could possibly be recovered. I found a few tutorials (example: https://roubert.name/joakim/androidfilerecovery/), but all of them require rooting, and unfortunately my phone is not rooted.
From my review of the procedures on this forum, it seems that unlocking the bootloader and/or rooting ends up requiring that the phone be wiped. Is there any way around this? And does anyone have any other suggestions on investigating whether my photos can be recovered or not?

Lost most likely. Copy the files to the PC. There are more tools available for Windows than Android.
From now on copy/paste, verify size and readability, then delete the source files.
Check Event Viewer during the transfer time to see if errors were reported in Windows. Maybe a bad cable, port, driver issue, etc.
In the future regularly and redundantly backup critical data on at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC. I keep all critical data, music, vids, docs, backups go on the SD card and use it as a data drive. Only apps, the DCIM (backed up to the SD card regularly) and download folder go on internal. Then I backup the SD card.
There can only be one folder on Android with the name dcim. So when you backup the images in the internal memory dcim folder to the SD card rename it something like Master Pics to avoid issues.
Think it through and develop a system; everything you need to do a full reload/restore should be on the SD card. Few people utilize the SD card as it should be... it shouldn't be just a random collection of files. It adds an extra layer of protection for your data. Always use a quality V30 rated card like the Sandisk Extreme.
Any chance the photos were backed up to some service online? Google Photos is free and generally present on most Android phones, Samsung has their cloud, and some carriers do as well...
In the future, like @blackhawk said, backups are FAR more important than recovery. ANYTHING important to you should be backed up ("3-2-1" is a good policy to practice). For photos, Google Photos is great because it's free (to a limit, of course) and very easy to use. I've been recommending that to everyone, even iPhone users, because recovery is harder than ever these days - SSDs and flash can fail catastrophically and without warning much more easily than the old spinny drives which usually give some warning.
Sorry there isn't much better news. You may be able to find some un-delete software and try it. There may be paid services as well, but for the most part, it's probably lost...

Sadly, no. Didn't use a backup service online. Thanks for the advice though--I used to be pretty good about backing things up routinely, but have gotten lax. Sadly this is the consequence.

That's a typically error when using MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and you shouldn't use it for transferring files whenever it's possible. MTP was developed to offer a wide range compatibility for the most storage devices but it's very buggy and very slow.
Next time you should use the internal file explorer to copy data to your SD. This is the best practice.
So I sent my current phone (Redmi Note 9S) and my old phone (Huawei P20 Lite) to be repaired by replacing the battery and replacing the cracked screen respectively. I always wanted to transfer all my photos and videos from my old Huawei to my Redmi, I never got the time because I had to repair the completely totaled screen. When I finally did so, I immediately transferred the photos from my Huawei to my Redmi then when I verified that all the data I wanted were transferred, I factory reset my Huawei to sell it for cheap to reimburse the cost of repairing the screen. I then also formatted my SD card in my Redmi so I could fit in my Spotify music instead of being in the internal memory so my new folders of old pics and videos could have space within the phone.
Everything was still fine. I then went to bed. When I woke up, I checked my photos in my Redmi once again and saw that all the photos and videos I transferred to my Redmi were gone. Not a trace. I panicked and searched for ways I could recover them. I downloaded multiple apps to see lost files. I could recover every deleted photo I took on my Redmi except NONE of the photos I transferred from my Huawei were recoverable or even seen. It's as if they never existed at all. Two years' worth of photos from all over the world gone without a trace. I spent over 12 hours trying to find different ways such as rooting my old Huawei or recovering the files in the formatted SD card to no avail. I am wondering what I did wrong or what happened between the time frames of me going to bed to waking up that prompted the photos and videos to erase from existence. All of my photos and videos taken on my Redmi which I did not manually delete are still there. There's not a single trace of them anywhere now.
Another thing to add was that I thought that I deleted them on my SD card but when I checked my settings on my Redmi, it was set that all Gallery media such as photos and videos are automatically sent to the internal memory instead of the external memory. To me, that checked out the possibility of me deleting the photos and videos.
I hope some of you could help me out because those photos and videos hold a lot of sentimental value to me, and I spent the money repairing the Huawei with the sole purpose of recovering those photos. I would hate to give up when there might be a possibility of a chance of getting them back.

I used the MobileTrans app to transfer the files, and I set the Redmi to always put photos on the internal memory, not the SD drive. That's why I am confused to why they would disappear overnight, especially when I could go through them on my Redmi flawlessly before I went to bed.

Not familiar with that app. I have zero confidence in those types of apps though. I always do direct folder/file transfers.
It's imperative to keep multiple back up copies or eventually this is what will happen. At the very least you should have backed up the photos on the SD card.
This isn't sounding good... maybe there's something you overlooked and the files are there.
After losing a database that was 30 yo and not replaceable I'm a lot more careful now

I suppose my first mistake was trusting an unknown app. Despite it doing the job it was intended I guess it didn't mean it would have the photos last. I was planning on backing up all the transferred photos to google photos the morning after I woke up from my sleep. Maybe I should have done it immediately, but it's too late now. Regarding the fact that I might have overlooked something and they may still be there, here's to hoping, but I am prepared to be disappointed.

I went through every photo and video (yes all 4000 photos and 500 videos) on my redmi just to make sure they all transferred properly. I even sent some to my friends on messenger for throwback's sake.

What's the internal memory size look like now?
Search the folders especially if the internal memory size indicates the files are there. Maybe in a common media folder?
Do some Google searches for that brand phone and that app. See what others have experienced and if they found solutions. I've never heard of anything like that but odd glitches can happen with Androids.
