To my misfortune today, I found that all the photos I've taken on my phone with the exception of today's are wiped. Is there a way for me to recover the data? This is a very serious problem as I am in Paris on a trip... thank you all in advance for all your help, and before someone says whether or not I wiped the photos, no, I didn't do any sort of accidental user input to wipe anything...
That's odd. I'm not sure. Do you use Google photos or other service as a backup?

Thanks for the response, I used to on my old phone, but I haven't had a chance to set it up yet at the time. After this impromptu data loss happened, I just set it up again, but it's too late for those lost photos. I don't think it's a hardware corruption on the SD card because my music and gameboy ROMs are intact. I think something in the software just wiped all the photos up to a certain point, that point being the last day of my trip. Anything before it is gone.

I'm not saying it's impossible that they're deleted, but it's not a very common thing to happen... Did you check that they're not locked in the stock gallery or haven't been renamed to a different file type?
As far as I'm aware, you can't restore deleted files without root.
I just got my photos back using Dr. Fone, root is required to pull the photos straight off but I just took out the SD card and the program can attempt to pull the photos off directly. Out if my 700+ photos only about 20 were permanently corrupted. I totally didn't expect this to happen and I am now curious whether this was Android's fault or LG's. I did have to pay 50 dollars for Dr. Fone.
It is also possible, since you're stating that you were using an SD card, that the card got corrupted. In that case it's not a fault of the phone, most likely

Good point, but I'd expect corruption to wipe more than just my photos. I say this because I am storing my music on the phone too, and all that as well as my PSP and Gameboy ROMs are still completely intact. It's like the phone just decided to wipe all my photos up to a certain point.
So I guess a fair warning to all, use some kind of background backup service like Google Photos.

Corruption can happen in various forms. It is completely possible that your file table sectors got corrupted, essentially "deleting" your Photos folder.
There's loads of programs you can use to recover deleted files from drives. This is a good place to start but there are tons. Just be careful where you download them from.

Yes the problem is the delete icon when you open up the gallery, you can miss one delete of a pic and mistakenly hit select all and boom all pics gone, happened to me on a trip with my g3 i didn't notice it in the spur of the moment taking pictures and when i tried to show of my awesome shots i noticed i deleted alllll of my pics and they were a looooot and i tried to recover them but most got corrupted and the only saved ones were the thumbnail cache for the real pics rendering them useless since they were small

About a month ago I was transferring files to/from my Amaze 4G, and then I disconnected it from my computer (without clicking "Eject" in Windows or disabling USB storage in Android) and after that, every time I would open an album, a few photos would disappear. A dozen here, 20 there, until my >1000 photos (carried over from previous phones) were GONE.
I removed the memory card and put it in my computer, and used an un-delete program to retrieve them intact and unharmed. I guess the file table got corrupted or something. I did a factory reset on my phone, reformatted the SD card, put all my files back, and went on my merry way.
Just a few minutes ago, I was copying all of my photos from the phone. I made sure the click "eject hardware" in Windows, and then selected "Charge Only" on the phone, disconnected it, and then, just to make sure it re-mounted properly in Android, I un-mounted and re-mounted the card via the settings page. When I open up the Album app (Which was presumably running in the background during this whole operation), several hundred photos are missing.
I plugged the phone back in, deleted the photo directories, and reloaded them from the backup on my laptop, making sure that the Albums app was closed. I then re-opened the Album app after properly disconnecting the phone, and about 600 photos were still missing. I closed the app and reopened it, and only a couple hundred were missing. I went back to the album list and then re-opened the camera album, and fewer photos were missing. Wash, rinse, and repeat, until all of the photos had reappeared.
This whole ordeal has left me concerned about the safety of my files. Ever since the first one I have often opened and re-opened the photo album to see if the number of photos decreases each time I open it, and I've had no issues other than the ones mentioned.
Any ideas on a cause/prevention for this issue?

Maybe the album software wasn't given enough time to create all the thumb pics it uses for browsing for the 1000+ pictures you just added? It would take even longer if you had vids in there too.

That would explain the second incident, but in the first one, the photos were actually deleted; when I used an undelete program they showed up as "_mage_210" and the like.

It has happened now with two different cards, one of which I'd been using for about a year with no problems, the other straight out of the package.

Not in a usable state. However, I've had no problems with drive/card corruption from my computer.
Failing the faulty computer, do you think the phone is faulty, and should be replaced?

If you can eliminate the computer as a variable then yes I'd assume the phone has a defect.
You've already said you tried two different microSD cards. One new and one old.
So that variable has been eliminated.
Only two left to go. One you can do with relative ease at a friends or even a internet cafe.
The other requires waiting for a replacement.
I would try and isolate the issue to one element first before I sent off for a new phone.
In any case if you'd rather just send off for a new one and be done with it then go for it.
Just make sure you test the new one and see if the problem persists.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions!
This problem seems to not happen if I make sure to kill the HTC/Android Albums app before connecting the phone to the computer, so it's usable for the time being. Once I go into the next payment cycle (I used up all my high-speed data, and I don't want to attempt a reload on 2G) I'll take it into the store and see if they'll swap it out, just to be safe.
So no-one else has had this problem?
Hi everyone!
So the inevitable has happened- a viruses infected my phone that my boyfriend soley uses. I knew viruses existed on Android but I didn't know to what extent.
The phone is a Samsung S5. It is NOT rooted.
My boyfriend was watching 'adult' videos and he has his phone set so you can hold your finger over the screen and not actually touch it to select things (IMO i think that feature is stupid! ). Anyway, While watching a video his finger hovered over one of the banner/block videos that are along the side of the actual video you are watching for too long he guessing and inadvertently selected something. He doesn't recall actually seeing anything download though.
Unfortunately because he likes to download some programs that require you to select in your settings to allow downloads from untrusted sources, he just always leaves that option selected. (Not smart).
He took screen shots of what happened next. I've included the screenshots he took in this post.
At this point his phone was frozen on the screens that popped up. He tried turning it off and on again but once back on the screens were still there and were stopping stopping him from doing anything on his phone. He didn't know what was going on and called me at work. Immediately I knew he had infected his phone, a similar type of virus was huge a few years for computers.
I didn't really know what to do so I suggested doing a factory reset. I figured he must have inadvertently downloaded something, and factory reset would get rid of everything.
When I came home from work he told me he did the factory reset like I said and the pop up screens that were preventing use of the phone were gone but he still thought he had a virus because his contacts were all messed up, they were very old and none of his newer contacts exsited (Im not sure where he got the backed up contacts that he did manage to get back...although they are mostly useless.). As well there are a lot of things missing, over 2000 pictures on the SD card have disappeared along with movies, documents, music etc... Almost 32gb of stuff!
I plugged the SD card into my computer thinking maybe his phone just wasn't reading it properly because the phone did show the SD card and you could view what was on it, but almost everything was missing.
All of the photos/videos were backed to his Google photos and they are all gone! The only thing there now is what is left still on his SD card. Checked Google photos trash and it says nothing was deleted.
His SD card is 32gb and use to be almost full, but now it has 27gb free!!!! Where did almost 27gb of data go!!?? And the approx 5gb of data left is just random stuff that I highly doubt would use up even close to 5gb...
(I just learned while typing this, that he was able to get most of his pictures back from Facebook, so nothing was removed from Facebooks backup)
I researched this for hours and I'm pretty sure this is a type of malicious Ransomeware Virus.
I think the virus is gone due to factory reset... Could I be wrong?
As for the missing stuff, my guess is either the missing data has actually been removed by the virus OR its still on the SD card but encrypted by the virus. (Which means it'd also be compacted?)
If it's still there but encrypted how can I find the encrypted files and unencrypted them.
Thanks for reading! Hopefully one of you will have an answer.
Cheers, Rebecca
This looks like the standard ransomware. I would look to see if there is one out there for android. I'm not sure there is a true version. What I mean by this is it locks out your bootloader. Can't be done on stock Samsung. So I think it is gone.
Now when you say he did a factory reset are you sure he didn't wipe the card by mistake?
The contacts sync with Google and what most likely happened is that have been saving to phone memory and not to the Gmail account. Which he most likely signed into after the factory reset.
As for the back up there should not have had anything that could remove them from Google pics.
So I have a s9+ snapdragon running the latest Android 9 pie. My files got wiped out after a factory reset and I wanted to get some closure. Can I get those files back? It was not backed up on Google or Samsung cloud. Nor was it on a sd card. It was in the internal phone storage.
I hear you can recover the data so long as you don't overwrite the data. Files aren't really lost and still technically in your phone. These are pics and video actually. It's all I care about. I hear people saying you have to root phone and do a deep scan of the phone to try to recover the data but I hear you can't root cause it doesn't work on my version of s9+. (Snapdragon and android 9) I also heard you gotta take it to forensics data recovery. I called them but they said nope files are gone. But I read on Google recoverable.
Please anyone, help me. I've been down since I lost my pics and video. I took vids and pics back to my homeland where I haven't been back in 10 years.
PS. I was on vacation when this happened. My company unfortunately has access to my phone and if you miss type your password a certain amount of times it triggers the factory reset and wipes it out. I decided to stop a certain amount of times and then my 20 month old son started pushing buttons and there you have it. Factory reset.
files are lost bud. Sorry
did you ever connect your phone to any cloud for backup purposes?
It's connected but I didn't back up photos or vids. Everything else I did. Is there a way to root this version of phone I have? Temp root at least without tripping Knox?

mostly correct. It wipes the table of contents of storage, but doesnt actually wipe(remove) anything. The issue is that it starts writing 1's and 0's wherever it wants to because as far as it knows, the internal storage is empty (which it isnt). It then starts unintentionally corrupting file after file as it writes system data and everything else it writes. Can he recover the data? Maybe. Is it likely? Not even remotely. The only way to recover it is to turn it off, like now and get it connected to a lunix instance, adb into it and see whats still there. Which is likely nothing usable.
Completely unrelated side note: Youre from Sibiu? I visited there about 2 years ago. Positively GORGEOUS place!! We saw the sun set over cobblestone right between two rows of buildings. It was surreal!

yes there is a way to root it, and thats probably your only hope. Turn the phone off, read up on the new-ish root methods, apply them to your phone and see what you can get via ADB. Dont hold your breath, but that is the only way to get there. Treat it like a recently wiped hard drive, because thats technically what it is. Its the "C: drive" of your phone essentially

if i typed lunix, then i meant Linux, and if i typed Linux, i meant Linux. Either way, i meant Linux. So, step by step... eesh thats gonna be a lot. First thing is to turn your phone off if you havent already. Itll keep writing stuff to the internal storage even if it doesnt say its doing so. Thats jsut what it does and it doesnt know that you dont want it to do that while its powered on. If youre able to do so, you can just turn on USB debugging in developer options and connect it to your computer without rooting it but granting permissions for your computer to access the drive. All of this requires having your phone powered on. The most dangerous thing ive told you to do is turn on usb debugging since it will write to the internal storage that you now have access to dev options, and then usb debugging. When the phone is powered on, try to keep it on airplane mode to avoid giving it reasons to actually do stuff. Linux isnt really necessary either as most software recovery tools will recognize the device and storage just fine, but the likelihood of it being able to actually recover anything is slim. If that doesnt get you full access to the internal storage, then youll have to either root or use linux or both. Its been a while since ive attempted this, so forgive me if my steps are off. That being said, these are the progressive steps one would need to take in order to do what youre trying to do.
does it wipe the phone though? Or does the phone allocate the areas where data is as free? If it only installs system and sets the previously used memory as "available or free". it can be recovered
Edit : if your phone was encrypted it wouldn't matter. Did your phone use secure start-up? (required a pin or password etc) then it would show adblock opening.

my company triggered the factory reset after failed attempts of putting password in. see it uses a thing called airwartch or vmware not sure what its called but yea..still hoping to recover vids and pics if i can root my phone and just do a deep scan just not sure how. esp for my version phone of s9+ snapdragon android pie. i have not taken pics or vids. just twitter, fb, email. some internet browsing. but not sure if those overwrite new data as well.

You can try an app called disk digger. It's your best bet. About the best on the market. If you root. Or reinstall the firmware in Odin. Kiss em good bye
The way this works is front to back. A file is normally written from front to back. Once it gets the end. It starts over. Then there goes old deleted files
Files are not deleted until over written. But actually marked for deletion. Not gone till next write cycle
If it can't then their gone. But every day you use your device the chance gets slimmer. Just cause your not downloading stuff. Cache and sick files are over writing.

Probably not.
Which link can you guys point me to to root? I have s9+ snapdragon. What are all my choices? Thank you.
I think I found one but link is broken. Syndicate. I really need this so I can at least do a deep scan of my phone. I need root!
You're right that it's possible to recover the data as long as it hasn't been overwritten. However, it can be difficult to do so without rooting your phone and doing a deep scan, as you mentioned. Unfortunately, it sounds like you can't root your phone due to its version.
You might want to consider reaching out to managed IT services that specialize in data recovery. They might have more advanced techniques and tools to recover your data. It's worth a shot since the pictures and videos mean a lot to you.
Good luck, and I hope you're able to recover your memories!
Hello all,
This is my first post here. I did some searching and didn't find a direct answer to this scenario, but my apologies if I missed something.
Recently I used my PC to move files from my phone's internal storage onto a microSD card that was mounted in the device. I used the cut & paste function in Windows explorer (didn't occur to me that I could do it on the phone itself), and did this in batches. Unfortunately since that time I've discovered some of the files are corrupted--they have the appropriate size, but can't be opened. Perhaps there is a way to analyze the file structure of the JPEG to see if a byte is missing, but aside from that, I'm interested if I can run TestDisk on the internal phone storage in some way to see if the files could possibly be recovered. I found a few tutorials (example: https://roubert.name/joakim/androidfilerecovery/), but all of them require rooting, and unfortunately my phone is not rooted.
From my review of the procedures on this forum, it seems that unlocking the bootloader and/or rooting ends up requiring that the phone be wiped. Is there any way around this? And does anyone have any other suggestions on investigating whether my photos can be recovered or not?
Thanks for any help!
Lost most likely. Copy the files to the PC. There are more tools available for Windows than Android.
From now on copy/paste, verify size and readability, then delete the source files.
Check Event Viewer during the transfer time to see if errors were reported in Windows. Maybe a bad cable, port, driver issue, etc.
In the future regularly and redundantly backup critical data on at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC. I keep all critical data, music, vids, docs, backups go on the SD card and use it as a data drive. Only apps, the DCIM (backed up to the SD card regularly) and download folder go on internal. Then I backup the SD card.
There can only be one folder on Android with the name dcim. So when you backup the images in the internal memory dcim folder to the SD card rename it something like Master Pics to avoid issues.
Think it through and develop a system; everything you need to do a full reload/restore should be on the SD card. Few people utilize the SD card as it should be... it shouldn't be just a random collection of files. It adds an extra layer of protection for your data. Always use a quality V30 rated card like the Sandisk Extreme.
Any chance the photos were backed up to some service online? Google Photos is free and generally present on most Android phones, Samsung has their cloud, and some carriers do as well...
In the future, like @blackhawk said, backups are FAR more important than recovery. ANYTHING important to you should be backed up ("3-2-1" is a good policy to practice). For photos, Google Photos is great because it's free (to a limit, of course) and very easy to use. I've been recommending that to everyone, even iPhone users, because recovery is harder than ever these days - SSDs and flash can fail catastrophically and without warning much more easily than the old spinny drives which usually give some warning.
Sorry there isn't much better news. You may be able to find some un-delete software and try it. There may be paid services as well, but for the most part, it's probably lost...
If you do find something that works, do let us know... always good to find out new options! Good luck.

Sadly, no. Didn't use a backup service online. Thanks for the advice though--I used to be pretty good about backing things up routinely, but have gotten lax. Sadly this is the consequence.

That's a typically error when using MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and you shouldn't use it for transferring files whenever it's possible. MTP was developed to offer a wide range compatibility for the most storage devices but it's very buggy and very slow.
Next time you should use the internal file explorer to copy data to your SD. This is the best practice.
So I sent my current phone (Redmi Note 9S) and my old phone (Huawei P20 Lite) to be repaired by replacing the battery and replacing the cracked screen respectively. I always wanted to transfer all my photos and videos from my old Huawei to my Redmi, I never got the time because I had to repair the completely totaled screen. When I finally did so, I immediately transferred the photos from my Huawei to my Redmi then when I verified that all the data I wanted were transferred, I factory reset my Huawei to sell it for cheap to reimburse the cost of repairing the screen. I then also formatted my SD card in my Redmi so I could fit in my Spotify music instead of being in the internal memory so my new folders of old pics and videos could have space within the phone.
Everything was still fine. I then went to bed. When I woke up, I checked my photos in my Redmi once again and saw that all the photos and videos I transferred to my Redmi were gone. Not a trace. I panicked and searched for ways I could recover them. I downloaded multiple apps to see lost files. I could recover every deleted photo I took on my Redmi except NONE of the photos I transferred from my Huawei were recoverable or even seen. It's as if they never existed at all. Two years' worth of photos from all over the world gone without a trace. I spent over 12 hours trying to find different ways such as rooting my old Huawei or recovering the files in the formatted SD card to no avail. I am wondering what I did wrong or what happened between the time frames of me going to bed to waking up that prompted the photos and videos to erase from existence. All of my photos and videos taken on my Redmi which I did not manually delete are still there. There's not a single trace of them anywhere now.
Another thing to add was that I thought that I deleted them on my SD card but when I checked my settings on my Redmi, it was set that all Gallery media such as photos and videos are automatically sent to the internal memory instead of the external memory. To me, that checked out the possibility of me deleting the photos and videos.
I hope some of you could help me out because those photos and videos hold a lot of sentimental value to me, and I spent the money repairing the Huawei with the sole purpose of recovering those photos. I would hate to give up when there might be a possibility of a chance of getting them back.
You transferred the images to the internal memory of the new phone? How?
Old phone>copy/paste>PC/hdds or OTG flashsticks*>copy/paste to new phone.
Never cut/paste
If using a SD card backup data redundantly>format on new phone>load data.
On the SD card** no folder can be named "dcim" or have that in their folder name as it will caused anomalies if there's already a DCIM folder on internal memory. There can only be one DCIM folder on the phone. For duplicate DCIM folders the secondary one should be named something like "cam photos" etc.
*always backup data redundantly on at least 2 hdds preferably that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.
**if the camera is set to store images directly to the SD card then the DCIM folder goes on only the SD card, I believe. I never set a dual drive phone up like that; I use the SD card to backup the internal memory stored cam files.

I used the MobileTrans app to transfer the files, and I set the Redmi to always put photos on the internal memory, not the SD drive. That's why I am confused to why they would disappear overnight, especially when I could go through them on my Redmi flawlessly before I went to bed.

Not familiar with that app. I have zero confidence in those types of apps though. I always do direct folder/file transfers.
It's imperative to keep multiple back up copies or eventually this is what will happen. At the very least you should have backed up the photos on the SD card.
This isn't sounding good... maybe there's something you overlooked and the files are there.
After losing a database that was 30 yo and not replaceable I'm a lot more careful now

I suppose my first mistake was trusting an unknown app. Despite it doing the job it was intended I guess it didn't mean it would have the photos last. I was planning on backing up all the transferred photos to google photos the morning after I woke up from my sleep. Maybe I should have done it immediately, but it's too late now. Regarding the fact that I might have overlooked something and they may still be there, here's to hoping, but I am prepared to be disappointed.
Are you 100 percent sure they transferred that night?

I went through every photo and video (yes all 4000 photos and 500 videos) on my redmi just to make sure they all transferred properly. I even sent some to my friends on messenger for throwback's sake.

What's the internal memory size look like now?
Search the folders especially if the internal memory size indicates the files are there. Maybe in a common media folder?
Do some Google searches for that brand phone and that app. See what others have experienced and if they found solutions. I've never heard of anything like that but odd glitches can happen with Androids.
