Samsung Galaxy S II
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: bulp6
Kernel: speedmod k3-16
Build: bulpc
So, yesterday when I plugged my device for charging it all went great, but as soon as someone called me and i put the phone near my ear I noticed that the phone was way too warm. I checked the battery temp and it was as high as 48-50 degrees, which I didn't find normal. When I unplugg the phone it goes to normal in a matter of minutes (30-31 degrees). What could be the problem?

No problem, this is normal with the galaxy s2 & a lot of other phones also!!
find out wat is running consuming cpu,use betterbatterystats turn off aoto sync, and any live widgets, flash diff kernels an see which gives u good results...
i got worse. i charge my phone when still playing game. it shows 56 cel
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Same here, this is so okay
56 Celsius is not normal. That's the battery temp, not the CPU temp, 56°C CPU temp wouldn't be a major issue I don't think; someone who actually knows (as opposed to someone who's guessing) feel free to correct me tho. SGS2 doesn't have CPU temp sensor.
If you constantly hit your battery with temps like that, you'll reduce its life.
Doing anything CPU intensive while the phone is on charge will obviously cause temp spikes & should probably be avoided.
The problem is that while playing games the cpu is getting quite hot too. It gets to a point in which you can stil hold it but it feels quite strange as it shouldnt get that warm. The specs are in 1sr post.

I was playing Crusade of Destiny (full scale 3D single play RPG) while charging my phone and noticed the phone was feeling really really hot.
My phone is on Bionix 1.9.1 (OC/UV/VooDoo) and I used SetCPU to OC it to 1.2ghz.
Being me, I didn't want to melt my phone so I stopped playing and used SetCPU to check my battery temperate- low and behold, it was a little over 122°F. I went ahead and cooled the phone down asap by putting it in the freezer for a good minute or so and temperature went back down to 98°F.
My question is, at what limit should the temperature be at to insure myself that the phone will be okay?

I set up a profile on SetCPU so if my phone reaches ~120F it give me an audible warning and clocks it down to 800 max. I know some ppl have had problems with profiles, however, they work just fine for me. I have heard that the Vibrant will start getting screwy around 125F, so best to keep it under that.
Ah, didn't know I could set an audible warning with SetCPU.
Wow I was closing to screwing up my phone then. Scary.
A lot of people report it heating up like that when charging and using the phone at the same time. If it ever got that high, I think its common sense to stop playing or maybe close what your doing (3d games or something heavy on the processor) I personally never got past 120 F...
I'd at the very least not OC. That game runs well with the stock kernel and no lagfix

I would strongly suggest NOT putting your phone in the freezer. ESPECIALLY when its running hot. Sudden temperature changes tend to crack electronics.
If you're worried, unplug it from the charger and turn it off. Maybe take the battery out (carefully).

that's hot. my phone never gets past 110 when charging.

Other Battery problems...
I'm running 2.1 w/ one-click root and one click lag fix. I uninstalled ATK for the stock task manager set to strict, and I usually have wifi and gps. Ever since rooting and teh lag fix my battery has been hot battery is draining very quickly. Next thought is to just make the jump to 2.2. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
When I flashed to Project Core kernal 1.2 and severe heat problems. Especially when overclocked passed 1 ghz you're gonna have heat issues. I don't really use my phone as it charges and i kill tasks that are not in use. Currently I'm using project core kernal v1 1ghz and its working great for me.
Hi guys!
Just got my SII yesterday. After couple of hours use I admit that the phone becomes hot even on normal usage, like downloading apps etc. The back of the screen as well as the screen itself slowly becomes hot. If i continue to use the phone it gets worse! I'm really confused n kind of scared. I've a iphone 3gs which rarely became hot. So, can u guys please tell me if its normal with SII or its just my unit that's got some problem?
Oh, sorry if its a duplicate thread. I've seen in different websites people saying it become hot when playing games. In my case since I had my phone I didn't even install a game yet! What I did is installed couple of apps, widgets and I use mspot to sync my music(446MB) over internet.
Any suggestions and advices appreciated!
It's normal that it gets hot when you use it
You have to remember that it's a dual core 1.2 ghz proc... and Yes it's normal..
Thanks for the replies. What concerns me most is the screen becoming hot and that I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this. How about u?

a part of the issue is it is a 1 GHz CPU overclocked to 1.2 GHz, so whenever your activity demands 100% of CPU, it gets sped up to 1.2GHz and gets hotter than needed.
But yes, excessive heating is not a defect, the phone is just too thin and tightly packed to dissipate heat effectively.
Actually, i dont think it's normal
The processor sometime get stuck at 1.2GHz in my device
whenever ur phone get too hot, go and check SetCPU, if the phone dosent get below 1.2 when idle, then reboot
My guess it's a kernal thing
Not normal. Mine doesn't get hot even when gaming. It used to get hot before I updated the firmware. Now it does not.

how can it be normal when the battery doesn't get warm at all while top screen and camera lens is hot like hell, and yes i mean hot like hell. so far no firmware has fixed this problem.

I had the same issue, it dissapeared after I flashed to KE7
Thanks for the replies.
Well, it seems yesterday my phone was warming up even in normal usage but now after using the phone for over 4hrs(after full charge) and a lot of usage(videos: 60-75mins, downloading apps, music: 40-50mins, little web browsing & checking fb & mail and sync & wifi always on.....) temperature is around 30 deg celsius.
Next thing giving me trouble is the capacitive menu button which wasn't working at all since yesterday(back button was ok). Last night, sometimes it worked for a few seconds and dead again. I was thinking I should call O2 for a replacement, suddenly its working again today! Guess its a software problem.
Another thing I'm concerned about is the battery life. After charging it to 100% and after the above mentioned usage the battery level is bellow 40% after only 4hrs. Well, brightness was 0% most of the time which is ok for indoor use. Its quite funny that the phone doesn't seem to discharge faster when playing videos(at youtube & vevo) compared to browsing web. In the review & battery tests at gsmarena they mentioned battery life is very good and can last almost a day with heavy usage. What u guys r experiencing? Is it similar to mine or mine has got a faulty battery.
which firmware are you running?
I'm on O2 as u r. So I guess its the same one. If not, mine's build number is ....XWKE2, baseband: I9100XXKDJ
NB: I'm using the stock firmware, didn't root and didn't use any optimisation app like juicedefender. And display brightness is on 0%, always on wifi.
KE2 is a little buggy, you try updating to latest firmware build KE7, might solve your problem.
you can do it if you connect your phone to your pc and run kies, or reading in the dev section of the forums there is a sticky there that informs you how to upgrade firmwares.
Thanks for the reply.
I use mac and the kies mac is in beta and won't let me upgrade(option disabled). I've tried the windows version of kies(downloaded directly from samsung portal) via paralles desktop for mac(lets u use windows app in mac) but it say mine is the latest version(ke2).
And the capacitive menu button is dead again! Is it possible that this is just a software problem? Or should I contact O2 for a replacement? Its my 3rd day with the phone so I've to report ASAP if i need a replacement.
The battery also feels faulty to me. It turned from 100%-1% with only 8hr of usage as follows:
videos: ~75mins(mostly HD),
downloading several apps apps,
music: 50+mins,
little web browsing,
checking fb, rss feed & mail,
sync & wifi always on,
brightness most of the time at 0%,
fring chat: 50-60 mins
And it took 3hrs to completely charge it up. Is it normal for you guys? Or should I request for a replacement? Any suggestions appreciated!
i have debranded my phone from O2 and upgraded to KE7 from kies, but if you cant do it that way you can try upgrading thru odin.

This thread has multiple firmware versions and instructions on how to flash your phone (please note, if you decide to flash your phone, you do so at your own risk, even thuo the risk is quite small).
As for battery usage, i have rooted my phone and frozen a lot of bloatware, if i leave the phone on standby with wifi off the battery drains lest than 1% each hour, with wifi on its about 2% each hour.
Also i find that when i play angry bird a lot i have to recharge after about 6-7 hours, when i watch videos my phone heats up a little, it heats up a lot if i watch videos while charging.
hope that helps you, if not talk to the ppl at O2 to see if you can get it swapped out, but i think if you can get your firmware upgraded your battery drain should reduce and the shouldn't heat up as much.
Thank u very much for the replies. It looks like battery draining is normal for all SGS II users. Its kinda funny that playing videos over internet eats less power that browsing web(27.19min of HD video playing at vevo over wifi drained only 5% of battery!).
So now everything seem ok except the capacitive touch keys which sometimes which doesn't work most of the time. I'm just scared to use custom roms as it might void my warranty. Well, I'll try the link u mentioned and see if the problem still exists.
Thanks again
Hi all,
My SGSII heat up alot while charging. (for exactly i charge when phone have only 8%). The heat is not normal. It's more heat than while playing game.
And also it got high temp while using wifi and internet browsing between these days. Do you guys face the same problem?
SGSII is really great . But it heat up alot while playing game and turn on wifi.
Mine is a bit warm in the battery area when I begin charging the phone. But I wouldn't call it "extremely hot".
Another case is when I browse the web (that has flash) it feels a bit warm near the camera area (should be the CPU). Have not played games though.
There has been a discussion going on about that. It seems that some apps (eg Robo Defense) are not properly coded for the dual core. In addition some members also hinted, that the kernel is not yet optimized to compensate for that. The whole discussion started after a guy has "fried" his SG2 (beyond repair) while playing a game and charging at the same time. The phone still worked on AC power but no longer and battery and was unable to charge battery.
My recommendation would be,
- not to play games to long to heat up the device to much before new firmware is out.
- ...or use cet CPU to downthrottle to 500-800 MHZ
If the device heats up while charging I would try rebooting it (to get rid of processes which may still are open) or preferably charging while switched off

Which firmware are you using? I was on KF2, and experienced the phone heating up while playing games.
Updated to KF3 (stock, using Kies) rooted and all was well again. Even with excessive gaming, constant wifi on etc the phone just gets mildly warm.
There's no need to underclock etc. The heating issues just went away with KF3. If that firmware is not yet available in your area on Kies, then just put a newer custom ROM (Darky/Lite'ning/Villian etc) and try it out.
I remember whatsapping with some friends and I noticed my pocket felt really really hot. I checked and saw Whatsapp crashed. Also my battery sucked up about 30%. The phone was too hot to touch. I instantly took out the battery too let it cool down.
I never had that since. I expect it's resolved too, because I have KG1 now.
my firmware is KF2. now i decided to upgrade to KG1. is it stable now? any recommend rom?
As long as it stays below 50°C it is perfectly NORMAL.
And besides there is NO heat up issues with this phone.
Regards.
Hello
My s2 heated up alot too
so much so that it melted my simcard whilst it was on charge
also got led burn marks,
sent it to samsung lets see what they do 4 me
I already upgraded to XXKG1 and still heat up alot while playing pottery game.
This is why from the factory apple underclock their cpu's.
Samsung got the crazy idea of overclocking an already power hungry cpu.
A phone that gets too hot to touch under normal use is not fit for purpose

Maybe because its pretty hot summer days, maybe its something else...
I'v notice that the phone getting too hot (then normal) while I'm charging it.
Its happens more when the battery is around 60% and less and after using it a little bit with the charger and without the charger.
Using the original samsung travel charger, also happens with other chargers that I'v used with other cellphones without any problems.
Its not happens every time, only when the phone is pretty hot - more then 36 degrees. While the charge I feel the phone is realy hot and i'v notice a temperature of 46-48- and it comes to 49-51-54 (the max it reach then I'v notice it), also its charge very slow of course because of the heating.
I'm using the stock samsung 4.0.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXLPW
Kernel Version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLPD-CL524746

What I'm doing to evoid this is cooling the phone before I'm charging it...or if its happen - disconnect from charger and cooling it.
Is it normal? I'V never notice this kind of thing with other android phones before....
thanks.
Did you try to charge it at variant locations?
The phone gets extra heat when its seeking signal, and if the signal is bad at your room, the phone will "work extra" to catch the little signal it can, causing it to heat.
Adding phone charge to it, which already warms the phone, can both cause the phone to be heating more than you are used to.
If same thing happens when you charge it at different location and you are sure the signal is strong, try charging it when the phone is off. This will point you to the right direction - if phone getting heated even when its off, it has nothing to do with the firmware or software you are running on it.
If it does - then perhaps the issue is with them (no expert if it is the problem, but atleast make a point of cutting down the unknown issues)
Cheers
Thanks for the quick answer,
Its happened in different places, happened with strong signal and with average/pretty low signal. Also forgot to mention that im using the original battery that comes with the phone...
anyway its happens most after im using the phone before charging it (most of the time its not happening but if its happening its only after the phone got pretty heat after use).
I'v heard people talking about ICS 'bug' with the heater battery?
Happens Here too, i would say tHat it is from tHe Heat nowadays.
Do you also get tHat wHen you play games or watCH Videos?
@pkrstr - it's become heat while hard use (heavy games), but not like I'v got when the temperature jumps higher while s happened when it charge...
Maybe another reason is using a power strip (splitter) while another devices connected?
Or maybe because I'm charging it at place with pretty lake of 'cold air' compared to the rest of the room?
Heey guys,
I want to no if there is anybody here that have this extreme heat.
When I put the battery in,the phone is in a few seconds hot.
The heat feels the most on the right side off the phone, seeing from the back.
Underneat that place inside is the little chrome housing?????
Full battery in and few minutes later level 1%.
I have tryed lots off things, but zero luck.
Perhaps the motherboard is dying.

After boot phone runs media scan, and this is making phone a little bit warm in my case. But 67 deg. is too much. You're sure its correct reading? Check temperature with another app. If it shows the same temp. something is not right.
Do an search next time, i post this over and over. On sg2, you get quite easy 80c în bench or games. Use android tuner widget for cpu temp.
For noobs, we talk about cpu temp not battery temp. At 70c battery will explode.
