Just say what your single favorite thing about us getting s-off is. Mine is definitely being able to restore androids without having to flash that stupid ph98img.

we could install kernels before,as long as we used a PC and launched recovery from fastboot. i guess its cool we can do it from a permanent installed recovery now without a PC,but its not that big a deal to me. ive always hooked my phone to the puter when i wanted to flash a new rom.
my favorite thing is being able to flash whole leaks without fear of beeing stuck there, and the ability to bounce around between firmwares.
my second favorite thing is that my bootloader stays unlocked. i no longer have to relock to run ruus, and afterward i dont need to re-unlock or keep installing patched hboots to use a few fastboot commands. this is different than my other s-off htcdev phones where the unlocked hboot would be overwritten with a locked one during the ruu flash
*disclaimer: i have no factory warranty and dont care about my lock status being unlocked,or relocked. do not htcdev unlock after s off if you care about staying locked
thirdly,custom spalsh screens are fun

Flashing nandroid backups with a minimum of steps and not worrying about kernels when I do.
(I haven't s-offed my Rezound yet)

I love being able to make mistakes and then go back and fix them with an RUU. If I want to go back to GB, I can do that. I also like being able to restore nandroids at any time.

Flashing and restoring roms with ease.

My favorite part is I conquered the wire trick

I like s-off for a few reasons. 1. With S-Off i know that future hacks and tricks will probably be easier for me to use. 2. I get a bit of satisfaction when i see s-off in my hboot

Has to be the ability to flash without the need to unlock or relock. Takes away tedious steps and makes the overall process quicker and more simple. Plus, there isn't a need to stress about down/upgrading firmware.

woah, wait.....Im not new to flashing and modding, but I am very new to the HTC scene. Do we individually have to unlock the bootloader ourselves? Or is it something the devs do? If we (invidually) dont unlock today do you think that HTC will stop letting us tomorrow? I just dont want to kill my phone.

We individually unlock it. It's super easy. The instructions gives you screen shots of what to do. I just unlocked mine. Took about 5-10 minutes. I'm sure it will be available tomorrow but I didn't waste any time.
Tough to tell whether HTC did this on purpose or not. They very well might pull it later after they realize it/Verizon *****es them out.
I would at least go get the unlock token now, even if you don't want to use it right now.

I'll just wait for the devs to set it up where I don't have to give my phone info to vzw and htc. Might need my warranty some day.

This htcdev.com unlock will allow you to flash custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries. Sadly radios, hboot/bootloader, and I believe splash screens are a no go. Also, some things must be flashed via fastboot as opposed to recovery. (ie kernels) Considering this phone has some new security tricks not seen before its an ok trade while you wait for s-off IMO. I don't know if it will bring s-off any closer but I doubt it. I can't speak to the warranty situation but I would advise reading all the terms and conditions before proceeding. However consider this.....rooting your phone technically voids your warranty....

Yes perm root is as easy as flashing a recovery then using the recovery to flash the su and busybox binary. Then install superuser from the market and bam permanent root. (or just wait till someone makes a flashable package that will do all that for you.)

Bricked Evo?

So I was doing all the downgrade stuff..
Downgraded, got as far as the Revolutionary S-Off part, then when I was gonna update my radios I ****ed up and copied the wrong zip and flashed the first 2.11 RUU and it took me back to 1.5 locked.
I was so tired had been at it for hours so I'm like **** I'll just start again I guess this time will be easy, I bricked my phone through the method but then I read if you were already s-off that was perma brick?
I read that after I tried running the live cd tool and it wouldn't recognize the phone, please tell me my 2 week old baby isn't gone...
I do get the red dim light still idk if that matters but I can't turn it on or go into the bootloader
The last I heard if you do the downgrade with S-off your phone becomes a paper weight.
I got frustrated at what I did and was so tired I didn't re-read I just repeated the process then I read I had bricked it since it was already s-off..
is it gone?
As far as I know its gone! on the bright side you now have a nice expensive paper weight!
Sorry for your loss. Its a hard lesson learned.
Your best bet is to take it back to Sprint and tell them it stopped working, and see if they trade it in for you. I've read that a guy on this forum did that and they charged him like $35
for new device. Time to use your communication skills. I just sent mine to HTC for repair because I don't have a Sprint account, I'm using Google Voice for the moment. Just tell the Sprint rep how much you love them and their service and how you'd recommend them to family & friends and all that, they might just help you out. I'm missing my E3D already:'(

Not exactly, you can take any update you want to with s-off, and s-off will stick. I've run the 2.17 RUU with s-off and it put on hboot 1.5 locked, but since I still had s-off, I just flashed a custom recovery and then flashed hboot 1.4 without ever unlocking, the s-off overrides the lock.
I wouldn't do fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 unless I absolutely had to, like if I was selling my phone and they didn't want s-off. The op only has problems because he was s-off and then did unknowns brick method.

S-Off Advice?

So I'll be making a second go at this inan hour or so. I'm leaning towards Clean ROM 4.5 pro. Questions are:
A) I am thinking I'll follow the instructions for S-On installation, and look at playing with the wire trick later in the week. I'm unsure if it's better to S-Off first, and if so, why?
B) Clean ROM looks solid and stable, but I haven't had time to read deep on any other ROM posts yet. Should I anticipate any bugs, or is there a strong recommendation towards any other ROM?
Plan will be to unlock, OCR, install OCR hboot, and follow the S-On Clean ROM installation instructions. Identifying any pitfalls with this in advance would be awesome.

Clean ROM is very solid for the most part. The biggest bug that I can speak of is the fact that the screen has a tendency to go to sleep during phone calls, and you need to press the power button to wake it back up. Other than that, it's very smooth, very reliable.

All the help is appreciated. Not new to this, went from the G1 to Nexus to Fascinate to Thunderbolt to Rezound. All rooted from the day I brought them home. This process was a bit different, and happy to say I'm up and running Clean Rom without issues. Looks like I still have the GB Hboot, and swype doesn't seem to work properly, other than that it's looking great.
I installed SetCPU to throttle the kernel for battery, but it doesn't seem to put a dent in quadrant scores. And idea if it works properly on the stock kernel?

Looking at selling my Evo 3D to a buddy and I would like to get a newer one, ie no scratches. I wanted to ask what are the repercussions of going with a newer 3vo; in terms of rooting. Also are they still somewhat the same; nothing has been changed (maybe BOOT version?)

Please explain about the new hboot. IIRC My hboot was the hardest to do, now you're telling me the new one is harder? I don't just want to get a new phone, I want to get my buddy out of his clamshell...yes he has a clamshell.
I haven't rooted on mine yet, only because I don't have the time to be on down-time while I root. Especially since I have never rooted before. So learning curve taken into account.
I don't think the new one is harder than 1.50 was from what I've read. You still HTCdev unlock and then wire trick.
