Touch Input Failiur: What are my options ? - HTC EVO 3D

Whats up?
Recently i started having a problem with my EVO 3D, it started out with a mere extra character insertion every time i was typing a message.
It now evolved to the point where the phone is almost unusable, as i cant get to anything without a hustle. It wont recognize my inputs, it makes its own decisions, even having hard time pulling the ring up to access my home screen!
I have used an app called "Check My Android" its a utility tool that lets you test the phones functionality in various areas, such as (the one I was most interested in) "Multi Touch"
It allowed me to point on the screen, highlighting the contact between my finger and the screen. As i move around, and approach the upper left corner, it mysteriously adds another contact point in the dead bottom middle.
Another method i used to check the Input recognition is calling up *#*#3424#*#* and running the "Line Drawing Test" Now this one draws lines as you move around on the screen, the interesting part is that when i get to the area of the screen (Upper left corner -ish) and draw circles, it instantly draws straight lines to the bottom middle, as that spot get an extra input when hitting the upper left one. :S
So I did do, on the advice of HTC's Online Chat "Kristine" a "Touch Input Data Clear", a "Sense Data Clear", a "Hard Reset" (Without backing up anything)
But all i ended up with is a **** load of Data loss and the problem persists!
I would try and Root, load a custom ROM, but if that doesn't fixes it, I'll mess up my warranty probably... Not that i can find my receipt anyways... :/
So what am i to do here ?!
Are any of you facing this problem, is it hardware or software?
[UPDATE] After the Hard Reset, the upper left corner remains faulty, but now also the entire bottom region where HTC has their "App Drawer, Phone, Personalize" buttons are non responsive for periods of time!

It happens to me too, but it only happens to me when I'm not grounded. For example, when I'm standing on the ground, it's fine. But when I'm on my forklift, it messes up.
I think the only solution is to have Sprint crack it open and look for a ground fault.

Yah well, for me, it kinda did it all the time weather i was grounded or not..
and i cant really have Sprint take a look at it since I'm on the other side of the Atlantic hehe
But i did hand it in for repairs at the vendor where i bought it, I'll know what it was screwing it up in like 8 days..

[Q] Horizontal calibration problem

Ok Looking for some help to see if anybody know how to reset the horizontal calibration on this phone.
I flashed a new ROM yesterday and when I went to set the calibration after I pressed the horizontal calibration and green circle centers it will shoot off to one side once it's finished which and forces everything to be in landscape mode. The only way I can get the phone to not stay in a constant landscape mode is to off the auto rotate function.
It wasn't the ROM because after several downloads and flashes (thinking something may have not downloaded or installed right) it kept doing it. Trying other ROMS gave the same results. ODIN back to stock gave the same results.
Has anyone ever had to reset this or have any other suggestions on how to go about correcting this problem?
Thanks in advance
Just lay the phone down on its back and push calabrate horizontal in the gereral settings

LOL thanks but that is the problem, when I push calibrate the green circle brings the ball to the center and when it finishes the ball shoots to the right side and stays there. not sure if its a hardware or software problem but it happens no matter what I try do do. I even odined back to pure stock hoping it would reset it but no luck so far.
Just to clarify, when it's done calibrating and still lying on a flat surface, the green ball moves?

Yes, the green ring brings the ball to the center and when it's done calibrating that you get the little pop up "calibrated" the ball will shoot to the right side of the screen. Iv'e look all over the internet for a solution and downloaded some apps that monitor sensors, looks like the horizontal axis seems to almost stuck in that position. I was hoping a reset of some kind may do the trick but there seems to be no way of resetting the accelerometer on these phones. Vertical axis is working just fine according to the sensor apps I have tried..
Sounds like a hardware problem. Has the phone been dropped or jarred in some way?
Actually I dropped it a distance of about 6 inches while sitting on my desk at work. The phone landed on my desk, it slipped out of my hands while I was rebooting it. It's got that thick T-Mobile rubber cover around it so it's well protected but who knows guess stranger things have happened.
It sounds like your going to have to send it back to Samsung to get it repaired.

You are absolutely right about that, good thing for insurance and being a T-Mobile customer for 5 years. They are sending a replacement phone 100% free of charge even though I've had this phone since day one of rollout.

[Q] Anyone else getting dead spot (touchscreen?)

I've had the device for about 5 months of use, then I switched over to several other phones. The lower left corner just gets harder and harder to press down on it (and its the frickin app drawer icon area too).
Just wanted to see if this was common, and if I should send it back?
I've set it back to a normal rom and left it on a shelf for quite awhile..
Oh, and did the end of life already come into effect for this line from HTC?
I have the same problem and now the top right corner is starting to get hard to press. Weird thing is, if you use one of those drawing apps it detects the lightest touch everywhere just fine. The problem only occurs when trying to press a virtual button like on the keyboard or the ok button in the market. Its been this way on different keyboards and rom's so I dont really get it.
I had this issue... when the phone gets hot. So on hot days, when it's in the case, the screen starts acting up. It happens across roms, so my guess is that it's not limited to a particular one, and it's a hardware issue. Suggestion: reroot or adjust your clock settings to make your phone run cooler.
I had my first Eris replaced because of a deadspot, seems almost as common as a bad trackball/forever scroll

I'm having this issue. Bottom left is dead and then like, row two from the top is dead for me too.
I've got a spot on the upper right of my screen right below where install is when downloading an app from the market

I had a whole row of sensors go out right along the top of the keyboard. The touch screen continued to get worse until it was unusable. I have best buy btp, so I sent it back and received a refurb from bb.

[Q] 3VO Durability

Hello
I'm wondering just how durable an E3D is, namely the touch sensors inside it.
Recently I dropped the phone twice on a hard surface, and started noticing strange behaviours, firstly with the touch functions and secondly with the phone always freezing up.
Not always, but sometimes when typeing, it's just a mess, the capitalizer writes a letter, multi letter feature is inaccessible, basically none of the characters work like they were ment to. The only solution thus far is to lock and unlock the phone, which fixes the keyboard and the touch functionality.
Sometimes I can't unlock the phone because the ring moves 3 times shorter of a distance, opposed to when its working properly, and if so you can forget about dragging icons into the circle to answer a call, it just won't go in all the way.
Oh and the freezes, completely, none of the touch sensitive buttons or the screen responds, sometimes the screen is the only responsive part while the buttons are completely dead, a lock/unlock is needed to fix it short term, also the buttons led go out, becoming none responsive, sometimes the led is off, yet I still get a vibrational feedback (Have it enabled) So all these irregularities are new, it never happened before dropping the phone! The only touch sensitive related issue I had before, from time to time, was the unlock pattern gesture not tracing, instead of sticking to the first circle I begin at, it moves to the next I drag my finger over. (also fixable by relock/unlocking)
During this post the keyboard wasn't acting up thankfully, but its getting more and more irritating to lock and unlock the phone while typing a message to someone.
First I was suspecting a virus, or low memory causing this behaviour, but after thoroughly cleaning the phone and acquiring more memory (by closing apps) I was still having the problem.
Any idea how sensitive the components are if subject to repeated shock from a distance of 1.5m or 5ft?
What are my options here if the irregularities persist?

Don't know how durable it is...but I too face the unlock pattern issue sometimes, IMO it is a software issue .. Also if you take too much time to draw the pattern the screen goes off (even if you keep your fingers touched)......

Here's an update on this issue...
I've noticed that the upper left corner is the cause. How?
Well, in landscape mode on my homescreen, trying to pull the notification bar down (then from, the bottom left since were in landscape) will instead (without any animation) try to go to full homescreen view where I see all my 7 homescreen, but it does it in a zoom like feature, where the more I pull it to the side the more it will zoom in until final animation frame is reached LMAO.. I'm actually crying...
The sensor might be off, in that corner of the screen as dropped phone tend to land/hit the corners first...
I should ask an xda dev. to cook me up a "sensor status check" app to check if any of them are functioning incorrectly..
I don't know what more then that I could do?!..

Hey guys, thought I drop my final verdict on this issue.
As you all (who read this thread) knows, I was having an irritating problem with my E3D, namely the touch functionality of the screen was messed up, but only in a certain area, where I thought the sensors got discalibrated from the drops the Phone went through on hard surfaces.. I have used an app called "Check My Android" and the feature "MultiTouch" to identify the spot on the screen, where if I touched, a daemon took over my phone and started all kinds of wired behaviour such as item triggers on the other side of the screen and freezing, even slow mo zooming of the homescreen, one touch passive zooming of webpages and so forth..
Now with that app, I was certain that everything with it is not in order, but I didn't have the slightest clue on what to do about it. I ran across a comment about the built in utility diagnostics tool code for the Phone while browsing on U2B (YouTube), so by typing "*#*#3424#*#*" (which starts as you enter the lasts star) will basically allow you to test every aspect of functionality of your phone, where i also went for the screen draw test, and found myself strengthening what I already thought was the problem "an area on the screen messing everything else up" as I pressed within this area I found a straight line jump, from the "dead zone" to the bottom middle of the screen, as I was drawing circles, it drew a straight line there as i went over it with my finger every time. Than browsing on after that code's discovery, for "EVO 3D touchscreen problems" I ended up on a video offering similar problems..
Now the breakthrough or rather yet the solution came from that videos second and only comments, saying how "Disabling the ScreenLock of the Phone would fix that problem" and so it did!!! I'm not having any disturbance while typing, flipping pages touching that area or anything out of the ordinary, otherwise the Phone was almost unusable. It let's me to believe its a software miscoading flaw, but it wasn't always like that even though I used the screenlock since day one, so I'm not entirely sure what's up? other than its fixed...
I hope this fix can relieve others just as it did me
And the diagnostics code is also useful.. should be stickyd :]

It's screen issues only, no reboot problems yet..
I have calibrated the G-Sensor several times...
In another post someone replied, that its a grounding issue, and trying that once it did give a result, but then again, I'm not having that, unusable level of the issue I was having, after a hard reset.. so I'm not really sure weather this is a grounding problem, an app caused problem, all I know is that I still get an extra touch input on the screen, when I approach the upper left corner.. with every multi touch app I test..
Have you tried that app called touch screen booster ??? If not give it a shot. Set the multi touch point settings to two. Then apply then start the service and select run at boot. Then reboot and see if it helps any. Also a way of trouble shooting to find out if it is a rogue app is to Uninstall all of your apps. Then see if you still have the issue.

No i have not rooted, i was waiting for the official ICS before i root.
So I'm on the Stock... everything lol
This is my second 3D. The first one stopped responding to touches. Sprint replaced it for $30 even though I bought it from wirefly.
In my own experience, I had the exact same symptoms. Only difference is I didn't even drop my phone. After a few months of owning the phone it started to show the aforementioned symptoms occasionally. Eventually, it just got worse. After a lot of forum searching, google searching, etc, it turned out to be the digitizer that was faulty. I had tried everything from flashing different ROMs, Kernels etc before I was finally able to narrow it down to a hardware issue. The digitizer seems to be an issue for a lot of 3VOs from what I understand.
Luckily I had a friend who replaced the entire front housing of my phone so I wouldn't have to exchange it since I was unlocked on HBOOT 1.40. At the time I was afraid that, had I gotten it replaced, I'd have to deal with Hboot 1.50 and HTC's half ass unlock method. Either way, after that it was like a brand new phone but better cuz I didn't have to redownload apps, etc since the motherboard and software weren't touched at all.
Hope it all works out for ya... G'luck, brothah!

Shame I hadn't seen this thread sooner, I could have saved you a lot of time. I am on my 3rd 3d. Basically any fall which lands on the touchscreen will cause this problem.
What makes it worse, I was rooted with my last phone, and when it happened, I had to unroot before I could take it in for repairs. The touchscreen was so badly damaged with this problem, I could hardly do anything.
TL;DR get a case that will cover the screen and protect it from flat on touchscreen falls.

screen calibration

Is there a way to "re-calibrate" the screen or change the sensitivity?
I have found that when I need to press a button near the corner of the screen, (like on a friendstream widget to refresh), I usually have to press it several times or use my pinky.
I'm thinking either the "alignment" is off or the sensitivity needs to be tweaked (maybe my fingers are too big)
When I first started typing on the Inc 4G, I noticed that sometimes it seemed like it was missing letters I was typing. As I started using it more, I realized that my hand was barely touching the corner of the screen next to the recent apps button, since I was used to using a small phone, the original Incredible. However, once I realized I was doing that, I stopped doing it. I have to consciously make the decision to stop every time I notice myself doing it. I've only been using it for a couple days, but I'm doing it less now, so hopefully I'll stop completely soon. I don't understand why it thinks the corner of the screen should be touch sensitive, because it's almost a full centimeter away from the recent apps button.

interesting, I'll have to keep an eye on that.
but I'm trying to hit a small button on the top right corner of the screen.
I have the issue I mentioned before when I'm holding the phone in landscape mode with the capacitive buttons on the right, the base of my index finger where it meets my hand barely touches the screen about a centimeter above the recent apps button. I don't use the FriendStream widget, as I don't use social networks at all, but if the button is too small, it may be that your fingers are too big, but more likely you are touching the screen somewhere else. I only figured it out when I took my right hand away from the screen and was still typing with my left and the keys were working much easier for me.
Try taking the hand you're not using to press the button and put it on the bottom of the phone to hold it steady, then, using your other hand, only touch the screen where the refresh button is with your largest finger and see if it works. It may seem like really basic troubleshooting, but sometimes that's the way to go.
Failing that, try to go to Settings -> Language & keyboard -> HTC Sense Input -> Advanced settings -> Calibration tool
It only lets you type in portrait mode, which is kinda dumb since most typing is done in landscape mode, at least for me. It would be nice to at least have an option to do it in landscape.
Anyway, I hope one of these solutions helps.

no this isn't true.
you don't have to press hard, you have to press in the correct spot...
this phone's display is tough to get used to.
prime example, trying to exit out of a single app in the stock task manager, is very tough, and always opens the app instead of hitting the x, it's annoying, but it's worth it, IMO
but here is a vid showing that I have zero difficulties going through the set-up.

Well, I was having difficulties using it. I don't have fat sausage fingers, and I even tried using my pinky finger and pressing directly on it and everything after the first dot just didn't work unless I pressed very hard on it. Now that I've used it once and calibrated it, it works much easier doing it again. Perhaps it was just that the factory default calibration for my phone is just that off.

Right side of screen unresponsive to touch

I noticed today when i woke up i cannot press the right side of the screen and get any kind of response. It is only about a thumbs with of the right edge but this prevents me from being able to hit send on text messages on the default messaging app and also on go sms as the send buttons are in the same general location. Is my phone just FUBAR or is there some way i can resolve the issue. Have tried power cycling and thats about it. I guess i need to know if this is a software issue or a hardware issue and if there is any way to find out and fix the problem.
I've been having the same issue actually. In the bottom right corner, anyway.
Like when I go to attach a picture to a text message, I have to hit the text box first so the paperclip button is out of the corner. I've also had some trouble unlocking with the camera or touching it from the Navbar, where it's positioned in the bottom right corner. :/

I have similar issues with that when my phone is plugged in. And my acreen often locks up kinda with the last image on the screen being the only thing you see until you reset.

I don't think I've had an image stuck to my screen yet. I have this problem even if it isn't plugged in, which is really strange. Not sure why it's so unresponsive, takes several tries to unlock/select.
And kudos for being in Portland too! :good:
Have either of you found a consistent way around the problem or a way to resolve it? Also are you running the phone in the base state that you bought it in or is it rooted / unlocked?
I just tested my phone, by opening the browser to google.com (mostly white background), all around the edge of the screen. And I can see feedback animations for all my touches around the edge of the screen. So I don't think there is any problem with the touch digitizer, at least on my phone. Phone is still stock, rooted and TWRP.
I have touch animation when I touch the bottom right corner on the lockscreen, but it doesn't always drag/ripple out. Sometimes it acts like I've pulled my finger off so I have to do it again.
Rooted, unlocked, stock.
After touch responsiveness got increasingly worse i contacted AT&T and they are sending me a free replacement since these issues seem to be covered under the one year warranty. Just throwing that out there in case anyone else gets as frustrated with the problem as I have and cant find a permanent fix.
I can confirm that I am having very similar problems... it is getting worse.
I am stock rooted and unlocked.
It is getting harder and harder to press things, fling actions (like scrolling through a list) hardly move a thing.
I just installed a multitouch visualizer and whenever I have 2 fingers on the screen and then go to cross them (start with fingers in opposite corners, move one up and the other down until they pass each other in the middle) it actually loses both fingers and then sometimes only one pops up again on the screen.
Can anybody try an app like this Play Store Link.
I've had similar results with 2 other multitouch testers.
Is it my phone, or everybody's?
----EDIT-----
Figured I would install the Base ROM (7.0>7.3) because either it was a software issue and maybe the ROM would fix it, of it was a hardware issue (I really didn't think it should be acting like that) and I would try to get it replaced.
The Base ROM fixed my issue (for now, fingers crossed).
Now using a multitouch visualizer, the contact points are always seen, even when the fingers cross.
Don't know what caused it, but it was software (at least for me).
----EDIT----
Just plugged in the charger again... now the touchscreen is acting strange again... this phone does strange things when plugged in...
