Worth Changing to Gnexus? - HTC Rezound

I have gone through 9 replacements trying to get the right phone over the last couple of months and am getting tired of it, what's everyone's opinion about switching to the nexus? I have to admit CM9* and MIUI are a big plus.

i just got a nexus and i love it, battery life seems alot better too. i will say the design of the rezound is better though.

I traded my nexus for my rezound a while ago and never looked back.
love this phone.
the nex is nice, but sense is what I like, I also found the overall build to be better on the rezound, (usually is with HTC..)

I came from a nexus for 2 reasons... 1) The radios are terrible on the Nexus. In my house, my wife has a Thunderbolt and I had the Nexus. Side by side, she would have 3 or 4 bars of 4G, me on the Nexus, like 2 bars of 3G or 1x. also the build quality is much superior to the Nexus. 2, I Luke the challenge of rooting lol. I had a Rezound before but I never rooted it. Traded for the GNex when it came out. I feel its an overall better experience with my rezound. If Ur looking to easily root and have a plethora of dev support, get the Nexus. If u like better radios and built quality, stick with the Rezound.

I traded my GNex for a Rezound and the only thing I missed was ICS. This was my first Sense phone and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. Turns out I really like it. Weird that you've had 9 lemons.. Mine has been flawless

I partially agree although I haven't had the best experience with the build quality on the rezound....

Traded my nexus for a rezound also. Gnex battery life sucks, camera sucks, and the phone is to big to hold in hand.

this(except for the liking sense part ).
i traded my gnex for a dev rezound(and then an s-off method popped up )
ive actually got 2 of them.since i could s-off my first one, i keep the dev phone put up for emergencies.
ive found the rezound to be of the same quality as all other htc phones ive had. i drive for a living, and my phone rides around all day with me,sometimes getting to 120+ degrees if i leave it on the seat in the sun. ive flashed it,s offed it twice, flashed the crap out of it some more, dropped it,and in general abused the crap out of it.
i loved stock ICS and wanted to love the gnex since it it googles proprietary phone, but to me it felt cheap and plasticy.
after 9 phones,i think you are overly critical and should move on to another device that may make you happier.

We have probably 10 rezounds on our corporate account & only one has had to be replaced.
I can't even imagine how you could legitimatelly have 9 defective devices in a row..........

It has happened to me with Motorola phones. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the refurbishment process.

I have NEVER sent a phone back due to pink buttons, no matter how much I dislike them. The first four were when I first got the phone, since I came from a droid charge and was comped this I got a refurb. First one had dead pixels, second one had the hissing audio jack, third one had a giant scratch on the screen, fourth one had a blown speaker, the fifth one was just right. Fast forward five months my "just right" phone would go through an extended and a stock battery in 12 hours, completely stock, never unlocked. I was annoyed and got a replacement. The first replacement was fine for a week and then went nuclear on my battery (literally got so hot that the stock battery bloated (yes I know that means the battery also went bad) It almost did the same thing to my extended as well. Fast-forward to yet another phone and this time battery as well, everything seems fine except for the giant scratch on the screen, I swear ti was in the same spot as the one from five months before. Then the next phone, got it, s-off'd it, working perfectly for two days except for pink buttons but **** it, and then I realized I've never made a call with it. Called my father and sure enough the damn speaker is broken, yes I tried on different ROMS and completely stock just to make sure, I know what a blown speaker sounds like. Now I'm on the ninth phone which seems okay for now but I'm still endlessly frustrated with the damn things. Plus I love MIUI. I just wish the build quality was better on the gnexus and I hate samsung's placement of ****ing buttons. It's like they expect you to have the hands of a 4 year old and be able to hit the awkward side button while it's in your hand.

I think everyone who leaves this phone just to get AOSP is crazy... Eventually it will come. In the meantime, there are lots of great roms to try out in the meantime. If you have other problems, I completely understand. But cmon.... Just for a rom?

I mean it's all about opinion. I could see me leaving a Samsung phone if I wanted sense more or aosp if it wasn't available.
But it sounds like you should give the Gnex a go OP. What's the worst that could happen? You just come back.

i agree completely. im not a sense fan either, but IMO this is still good harware and worth the wait. like you said, lots of great roms in the mean time. scotts dev edition is an awome "best of both worlds" rom with the ICS theme,no sense launcher or widgets, yet the "prettiness" of the stock menu and pulldown. im enjoying it alot.
it helps that i can run a pretty functional cm9 on my sensation while i wait

Completely agree, their bootloader is WAY less fun. At least, if it's anything like the fascinate and the charge it consists of a down arrow with a yellow android that looks pretty while you use odin to flash everything since their bootloader is half-assed.
I also would like to say that I do love our devs, and this is not meant and is not me being frustrated with them, simply my luck with regards to getting a functioning device which has lead to a lot of frustration. Regardless of if I switch I still have another rezound that I have access to and can use whenever so I will still be active in this community... I am simply asking the opinions of people who have or have had both devices (IE Scotty). Hell I would take a shot at deving if I had the time, I have experience with linux and coding in Java and Lua. Anyway I do understand the frustration when people post things like the "HAHA I SOLD MY REZOUND *****ES" thread (my translation of the title) where they seem to be bragging/flaming rather than actually trying to consult the community.
I would like to say I don't particularly appreciate the assumptions that my devices could not have possibly needed to be replaced that many times legitimately. I just have had terrible luck with the replacements themselves, almost all have arrived defective if you read my explanation above. I have never bricked a phone and I'm not particularly fond of some of the stories where people go "ops I bricked it, lawls, hey Verizon my phone is dead send me a new one because I ****ed the damn thing up and enjoy committing fraud."

its a little better than that. you can use fastboot to do a few things, but it was still pretty devoid of any user interface, unlike hboot. radios were flashed in recovery. you unlock it pretty much just like the rezound, with exception that you dont need a token just fastboot oem unlock anhd voila you have access to everything.

we all agree that samsung phones are horrible with build quality and GPS issues.
I never had the problems with my dinc that i had with the droid charge. The UI is horrible, so you have to get ASOP or just fail with Touchwiz.
Sense is pretty much awesome compared to the other manufactures overlays. Is it better than stock, thats up to the person, but at least with the rezound we can have the option for both.
With the nexus, you get a crappy GPS (proven and documented issues) , and the no choice between stock or sense.
If you hate sense, then i can see why sticking with this phone sucks.

Couldnt agree more. Granted that Verizon locks out HTC HUB, so Skinds are out of the question, but i think Sense dominates most Manufacture UI's that are out today. And I happen to frikken hate the STOCK UI....LOL....but i love MIUI tho. Im interested in seeing ICS in person tho. Not many changes in the UI with ICS, but its looks awesome tho. Im on the fence about this one, and I jsyt came from Sprint on Monday. Guess im an HTC person. Speaking of Skinds, has anyone been able to get any installed? Ive tryied and installed quite a few already (knowing they prolly wouldnt work anyway) and they installed just fine but when i head into the "Applications" section there not listed for me to uninstall them. Pretty wierd. Feedback on this would be great. Sorry to go [OFF-TOPIC]

Not a problem. I'm not sure what apk Hub is, in fact, it might be laced into another apk. HTC Sense.com is however an apk.

It's not that I hate the device, it's just that it reminds me too much of my Incredible and I want something different. I love the look that Sense brings to the phone (but I hate the launcher) and I love the option of going stock or having a sense rom, that was a major reason why I wanted this phone in the first place along with being able to add in a MicroSD card. One of the main things that's annoying me now is that the phone seems to lag when I' m using ADW EX or swiftkey X. It feels like I'm back on my Incredible! I read around that a factory reset helped some people so I just did one and hopefully it will improve the responsiveness of the device.
It's just that I feel like I'm missing out by not getting the Nexus. Root isn't guaranteed with the Rezound like it is with the Nexus, since I bricked my Incredible 5 days after I got it the lack of SBF/NVflash-type tools kind of scares me now because there's no safety net in case your device randomly decides it wants to turn security back on. Also there's always tons of modifications done with Nexus devices because they're developer phones. With my OG Droid I was messing around with roms and kernels every few days checking out what I liked the best about them. Once I switched to the Incredible in March, I liked the change but quickly grew sort of disinterested in flashing roms and kernels about 2 months after I had it because every rom was essentially the same in the end. That may be the case with the Nexus since but only time will tell.
I think root and S-Off are going to make this device amazing. We'll get stock ICS ROMs, Sense ICS ROMs. ROMs to fix the little issues. Everything gets better with custom ROMs. I didn't buy this device for the stock experience. I got it because I love the development the community does on Sense devices.
Rabble rabble rabble.
I think the only people who don't buy their device to customize are the ones who got it from work for free, and those who have no idea what some phones are capable of(Grandma and Grandpa who were tricked by carrier to extend their contract), lol.
I agree that root and S-off will definitely make this device better, Sense and ICS was also another big factor for me.

Thinking of switching from galaxy nexus to resound. Quick questions.

Greetings earthlings. I was thinking about making the switch from the gnex to the rznd. I was wondering if there were any stock roms out there (no sense). Also how does flashing a rom work with s on? And finally anything else I should consider before making the switch?

You should consider that the Nexus sucks and the Rezound is amazing.
Just kidding, but the Rezound really is better. I've only had HTC phones, so I don't know how the Nexus flashes ROMs, but we can do it right in recovery. The only (small) hassle is that we have to flash kernels through the bootloader, but our devs have come a long way in simplifying that process. There are a few ROMs that are stripped of Sense as well.

Also, as best I understand it, you will not be able to flash alternate radios or splash screens.
As the responder above me indicated, there are no straight AOSP ROMs at this time. Check through the Android Development section and see if any of the "Senseless" ROMs fit your needs.

Having owned both the Nexus and the Rezound, I dumped the Nexus and went back to the Rezound. You won't regret it.
The Rezound was only unlocked last week so roms are a little limited at the moment. However, we have some great devs working on it.

I made the switch from a SGN.... I must say, your going to miss some things that the Nexus had (ICS), but your really going to love things the Rezound brings to the table. There are a handful of roms out now. I think the Senseless rom you'll have to install a 3rd party Launcher. I've come to really enjoy Sense... I;ve read about people wanting to get Sense off thousands of times... My only question is... Why? It actually functions quite awesome...
I'm quite happy with the Rezound, the Dev Support is great, and I'm almost positive there will be quite a few more by the 15th when everyone returns their Nexus because the Reception and speaker both are terrible!!
Good luck..
Don't forget the Rezound will be getting ICS soon as well. It's only a temporary loss.

Soon? More like next fall.
i too am thinking of switching from Gnexus to Rezound.
I think in a couple months the truth is going to come out that the Gnexus is actually quite a very subpar phone.
PenTile matrix display, abysmal battery life, and the extremely poor camera quality are enough to have me switch to the rezound.
here is my main concern though, what kind of battery life do you guys get? with my gnexus LTE enabled all day, i could only get about 2 hours of on-screen time. what about the rezound?
thanks in advanced.
Thanks for all the info! Does android wifi tether currently work with rooted rezounds? Also are speeds on lte better? (Noticed lower speeds on gnex)
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
yes wifi tether does work.
I currently just traded my GNEX for a Rezound.
Best choice I've made.
As the GNEX is a great phone.
The Rezound is just amazing.
You won't be upset if you do choose to trade up.
S-ON isn't too bad since we have root.
S-OFF would be ideal, but I'm plenty happy with what we have and is to come
I came from a GNEX and really, really like this phone. The thing that impressed me the most is the screen.
The GNEX has a big, beautiful screen but the colors seemed kind of washed out. The Rezound, the colors just pop and seem very vibrant. Greens are a brilliant green, red's are brilliant red. It's hard to explain, but it is very noticeable.
I also noticed a considerable difference in the camera quality on the Rezound compared to the GNEX. Sure, you're not going to take 20 photos in a second with the Rezound but you do get better quality pictures. Feature wise, both phones offer the same recording features/
I have flashed a couple roms, it was very easy and am very encouraged by the development work that is going on.
I'm one of those few people who actually like Sense, so I really do like what HTC has done with the UI. The ICS dialer pissed me off to no end, it was huge bulky and just seemed very.. blah. While the Sense dialer isn't better, it is at least a bit more functional.
One last thing I would throw out there is that I never knew about the UOT Kitchen (can't link yet, but search the forums and you'll find it) until I happened across a post in this forum. I have to say, it is one of the coolest and easiest ways to give your phone your own personal flair. I'm sure that ICS / GNEX will be supported on the Kitchen but for now, you at least get that benefit on the Rezound.
Anyway, hope this helps somewhat.

I can't give a good answer to that as my area isn't 4G... I have chargers everywhere in my house and at my office so Battery Life isn't such an issue for me. I have flashed two roms today and have been playing with it non-stop all day and I think it has been on the charger maybe two hours.. Maybe someone in a 4g area could respond to that better.. I do know that on a normal day, it is way way better than my Nexus... The batt life was HORRID on it.. On the Rezound I wouldn't consider getting the bigger battery, because the battery isn't that bad for me.. In 8 days of owning the SGN, my battery went dead 3x... Rezound hasn't gone dead yet..
I loved the SGN... I'll be the first to tell you.. If it had a louder speaker and a better reception, I'd still have it... But the rezound has a awesome speaker, and the reception is hands down as good as my Droid X or better...
Its a big decision for you to make.. I don't think you will be unhappy making the switch...
I made the switch. I miss ics miss
I don't miss the poor battery life.
I don't miss the loud signal in reno
I don't miss the soso camera
I don't miss the plastic cheap feel.
I have the bigger rezound battery. I haven't used it. The stock battery seems fine.
I love the camera.
It's really fast.
I think I like the 720 screen better on the rezound.
Beats is lame. The headphones are heavy and barely stay in my ears.
I'm not a fan of sense but I don't hate it.
I will keep the rezound. It just works.

I agree.
We have both phones on our corporate VZ account. I am in charge of that account and get my phones for free.
If I wanted a GN I could have one tomorrow, but I am not impressed with the GN AT ALL and I couldn't wait to get one for months before it was actually released.
I do like the huge screen size, I wish my Rezound had a 5" screen, but there is absolutely NOTHING ELSE I like about the GN.
~John
For me it turned out to be more simple than I thought, I had been up for an upgrade for about 6 months (previous phone BB Curve). I was debating on specs and features of the Razr, GN, and Rezound. I would go back and fourth on what i really wanted. But as soon as I waled into the store and actually picked up the phone, i knew which one I wanted. Razr felt horrible in the hand and just down right uncomfortable (i am really not a thin kinda guy). GN felt as if even with a case it would break at even the smallest drop. But the RZ felt solid even w/o a case.
Even after looking at how the phones worked, it still went to the RZ. Now my decision was even more correct now that I have it fully rooted.
I get great battery life (for the type of phone)
Great platform for whatever I use my phone for
Great picture quality
and a VERY solid device that I have a feeling I will be happy with for 2 more years.

Thinking about going to the Rezound. question..

Im coming from the HTC evo from sprint. Im on my way over to Verizon. Im interested in both the Rezound and the nexus...
Is there a reason to choose the REzound over the nexus? It doesnt seem like the Rezound has full root/s-off etc etc right? Is it a matter of time, or do they have this thing locked down?
Rezound have radio lock thats all
Rezound is faster and has alotttt stronger signal. Basically, HTC owns samsung
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I was all about the nexus but after being burned so often by buying and trying to justify my purchase waited and was about to buy a rezound till I got it as a replacement and its awesome. I love this phone so far. Great camera, It's really quick, screen is amazing and its the perfect size
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
I came from the EVO as well. It was this or nexus, I chose this for the better camera and beats, which I can't go without now. Plus the free headphones. Only selling point of the nexus is ics but a senseless Rom gives a close experience which should get better in time. Plus sense 3.6 is cool and miui is in progress as well as sense 4.0
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
Came from Evo 4G on Sprint as well. Went through 2 Nexus's before giving up and getting the Rezound. Signal and call quality on the Nexus was horrendous. I would hear about every third word the caller was saying which made for some pretty interesting conversations.
The ONLY advantage to the Nexus is the ease of "tweaking" it but I un-locked, flashed a recovery, and flashed a rooted ICS Rom on my Rezound in about 10 minutes.
Get the Rezound ... NO BRAINER
IMHO
Edit: BTW ... The return rate of the Nexus is upwards of 20% according to my Verizon Rep. She told me she wished they would pull it off the market.
I came on over from the Evo 3d and I love the Rezound and coverage so much I've yet to root it. This phone has almost cured my flashism. Though I'm on vacation this week, I might get in on the rooting and madness on this side of town soon.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Thanks guys.. Im hesistant with the Nexus because IVe heard about samsung not rolling out updates etc etc as fast as they should.
Rezound vs GNex
I poured over this decision back in December. I opted for the rezound because it has an sd card slot and the GNex doesn't. The camera and processor are also superior. I have mine OC's to 1.8 GHz. It is saddled with s-on though. HTC allows users to unlock the bootloader but we cannot flash radios and kernels directly via recovery. It must be done in the bootloader or via fastboot. Not the end of the world but not as easy as an s-off device. This nut seems to be a tough one to crack too. A few devs have been at it since December but no joy
Once we get cm9 the nexus will be a thing of the past.

What do you mean by that?
editeD: lolwut I got it now haha fail.
Look, I'm not expert by any means, but I feel I need to chime in. I have owned both phones. The Nexus was probably the sweetest phone I thought I ever had.. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. After a few days I constantly had problems with the Battery, Signal strength and SOUND. Let me explain. ICS was awesome IMO. It worked great and was a really nice change. But that was the only thing that was nice on it. The roms that are coming out now for the Rezound by far make this the best phone I've ever owned. Speed, picture, ICS and I personally like Sense. SO for me to give anyone advice it would easily be GO REZOUND!!
BTW.. Ask this question in the Nexus forum, and I guarantee you'll get a different response. So basically, you need to go in the store, and give yourself 20 minutes to mess around with both phones. Just keep in mind that Samsung has a reputation as having terrible radios. Be sure to listen to the sound on both. And take a look at the resolution and clarity.. A few youtube videos should do it for ya! ALSO, the fact that you get a nice set of ear phones.
I just got the rezound last week and love it. I'm coming from a sensation 4g this is a lot better phone than that is. Plus now we have an ics leak that your phone doesn't have to be rooted is sweet. And when the official ota drops you can still update
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
Don't think. Just buy a rezound.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
I faced the same decision, and I went for the Rezound. The camera, reception, and overall build quality of this phone is better than that of the Nexus. I really don't like Sense, and that almost made me go for the Nexus, but software is upgradable and hardware isn't. I'm currently running a senseless ROM (XTreme's), which isn't AOSP, but it's close. It seems like there is being progress with ROMs completely lacking sense (MIUI is being worked on and apparently has RIL in-tact), and once CM9 gets its RIL issues fixed, my phone will feel complete. Even without that, I am very happy with this phone. The screen is amazing, even when compared to a Samsung device (Nexus). The battery life isn't great, but it is an LTE device... I never get signal drops, and I'm always on 4G.
okay well with that being said, what do you guys loose not having s-off?

Not much. It makes it more difficult to flash kernels, but it is still relatively easy using adb or just your phone. You can't flash radios (well at least without being relocked), which I think is the major downside of s-off. Also, unlocking through the HTCDev method won't let you go back to complete factory stock (without the bootloader saying relocked), so if Verizon happened to check, they can see that you MAY have voided PARTS of your warranty (not a big deal).
hmm Seems like its too much bull**** to deal with...

It's really not that bad. Choose the phone you want to go with, but don't let that sway you too much. We may not have as many developers and ROMs as the Nexus, but we have some really great devs. And flashing ROMs and kernels really doesn't take noticeably longer without s-off, and becomes second nature
If you want stock ICS go Nexus.
If you want better screen, eventual Sense ICS (AOSP probably won't be possible until we can get s-off I think), and removable SD card go Rezound.
I've been a stock Android fan since the original Droid, but I've really grown to like Sense and Sense 4.0 looks even better. I do want an eventual AOSP.

JUST bought a Dinc4G!!! :D

Against my own advice of buying a Nexus I am about to buy a Dinc4G off contract and simply because I broke my Dinc2 screen two times in a row...
How is the Dinc4G? Any issues (software or hardware glitches)? I want to ensure that it is a good phone. I know it has great specs, but that is half the story. The other half is living with it (and I learned from my experience with the Droid X2 and Transformer prime)..
So any issues at all? Or is it smooth sailing?
EDIT: OMG! I bought the phone!
Now please god, let me make up some of that cash from the Dinc2 sale.

i would say smooth sailing, well the sdcard thingy, but the only problem i have had is waiting for root.
I like mine. It's noticeably faster than the Incredible 2. I bought a 64GB SDCard from Amazon for $44.
I think you'd like it. S off is coming. I liked the og Inc better than my Inc 2 and the 4g reminds me of the first incredible. And you already know the devs are good ones.
---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:18 PM ----------
One thing is my first 4g had about 10 dead pixels so I got a new one. The new one has some of the back light bleeding from the bottom bezel though but that's nbd to me
the form factor is closer to the og inc than inc2 (though not *That* different)
i have no complaints with mine, and plan on keeping it for a long time...even when the dlx/dna launches (ill just swap sims when i want use one or the other)

Hold on a sec! You said what now about SD cards? I guess it shouldn't be major issue but I'd like to hear moar!
I am about to finalize the deal and I don't wanna over think this. Yes, I was an idiot to drop my Dinc2 and crack the screen for a second time, and it cracked easily since I probably didn't install it properly first time around. And yes, it is gonna be expensive to go off contract, but anywho... i hope the resale value for the Dinc4G is good ones my upgrade comes around.... :/
Man, do I know how to waste good money . Anyway gang, I will shortly join you and we can continue our crusade of the missing OTA update for Key Lime Pie... (4.2, I guess, ain't it!)
Welcome back to the land of Dix! Thanks all! I hope I don't mess up my future phones like this... It is only after you drop and break a phone you realize that you have to treat these devices like babies... Don't Drop Them!
Personally, I like mine but the build quality has been questionable. I took my first one back after a day of use because the screen was discolored, used the next one for about a month with a creaky battery cover before a crack started forming at the headphone jack, and finally the one I have now seems acceptable. The only design annoyances I've found are that the camera lens clicks as it focuses (bad for video) and the buttons don't have much feedback. Reception could be better, but it generally works fine.
Other than that, good software, good screen, good battery life.

the sdcard issue is the internal sd, will not let you transfer apps to the extsd, but root might cure that, not sure. i think all the new phones have this issue as well.

This. Check out the original thread about the issue:

I swapped out my DInc4G twice with Best Buy because of the screen discoloration issue. The last phone I received from Best Buy had the same issue and HTC was kind enough to exchange my phone for a new one. I'm currently on my third DInc4G. All was fine until a month ago when the screen discoloration appeared on my current phone. I may contact HTC again but I've been busy and don't feel like going through the hassle of setting up my phone again.
I haven't experienced any other issues with the phone. The battery life is great compared to my OG DInc, and once we get s-off, it will be an even better phone.

Haha, damn. I just bought it. Anyway, sounds like the screen discoloration issue is primarily due to the glue not having fully cured and all? And I was guessing this has solid build quality. Well, you always have a few bad ones, but I wonder if I activate a Dinc4G on my line and I have issues down the road, can I do a Certified replacement from Verizon?

Now, get me up to speed, y'all! Is it okay to update to the latest OTA? And do we have root? Or should I just wait till the S-OFF rather than root it now? :cyclops: :fingers-crossed:

Anyone else regret this phone?

i love the phone itself but sort of regret getting it. I guess its my own fault for not looking up more into htc phones but coming from a GN where all you need is unlock and root when i saw we had that i got it, didnt realize with htc you need soff too. Then i foudn out no htc phones with no sdcard have soff yet. Im not a fan of sense and prefer the stock android experience or aokp only. anyone else feel like this? i love the phone, but dont like the soff situation with htc, and cant think of a better phone to switch to either cus i dont want the s3. and unfortunately nexus 4 isnt for verizon
I can relate to what you are saying.
For me, I set my expectation of this phone to be a great consumer phone, not a developer phone. So I decided not to root it or installing custom rom on it. Just use Android as a daily phone this time.
I have spent way too much time and energy on GNex switching between rom , which is something I really regret after a while. Not just full wipe everytime, but there is simply no single best rom can meet all asks. many of them are great initially, then slowly become slow and buggy, which I really can't figure out why, including CM10.
So that's why I look beyond such issues for HTC DNA, but evaluate it from a consumer point of view, "apple-type" user, if you will.
And I keep my galaxy nexus to play with, "in my lab".
If your expectation was to make this to be a full developer unit... it may not be the right phone, and verizon is not the right carrier in this case.
Many says playing around with all roms are "fun", but after long time of "playing around the roms" with more than 5 state-of-the-art smart phones in past 2 years, I will control myself on such "fun".
just some thoughts.
I feel the same
I feel the exact same way. No doubt about it though, the phone is great and the screen is amazing! I am just not a fan on Sense. I love me some AOSP. The phone also feels a little too big for my likes.
I am contemplating returning the DNA and getting the Developer Edition of the Razr HD. But if I did that, I might end up in the same boat as I do NOT have the skills needed to complile AOSP from source and get it running on the Razr HD.

I agree. I knre it wuldnt be much of a developer device. My main hope was jus for it to get aokp fully working. But not as much dev as the nexus with all their highly featured kernels, tbh i wish my nexus didnt break cus id still be on it. On the ROM flashing front - I'm trying to think of a scenario where you would make changes to /system while outside of recovery. Every time I flashed a ROM on my GNex I would reboot into CWM anyway - I'm assuming the only things that actually made changes to /system while not in recovery would be things like kernel controls?
It kills me that people buy an HTC phone and complain about Sense. It isn't like they "snuck" Sense on this phone behind your back.

This was the choice for most people that were tired of their GNex's, since Verizon won't work with the N4. Most of those people are used to stock AOSP, so its understandable. I came from the Inc, to Inc2, to GNex, and it was still a bit of a shock for me to go back to Sense.
I think most people also assumed that the development on this phone would be similar to what it was like on the GNex, which is not the case. Hopefully we get some stock android stuff going pretty soon so we can all rest easy

No kidding! Although I have to say that while I always liked Sense (way back from the Windows Mobile days), I stopped using it once phone screen sizes got bigger because Sense just made everything too big... and with some DPI tweaks I have actually found Sense to be quite usable on the DNA... I'm still trying to settle on my favorite launcher for this phone, but at least this time around Sense is in the running.
If I could get a zip that modifies it to a 5/4 or 5/5 layout it probably wouldn't even be a competition. For the record, other contenders are Chameleon Launcher, Apex, and SPB Shell 3D (in either Smartphone or Tablet mode)... Still can't make a decision. :silly:

i love this too. I got this phone because of sense and the screen! you all know it has sense I just love to hear people complain and it somehow puts up better numbers than the nexus 4 with aosp right out of the box. This phone hasnt even got roms yet just got unlocked! wait until s-off and then people will have their flavor of aosp or sense! And also remember how long it took for galaxy s3 to get unlocked? it could take awhile so we will see how many true HTC followers there is here or just people jumping ship for the next great quad core 1080p phone. should be interesting. The positives outweigh the negatives for me! Whenever i use phone i dont regret it for a second! Sense is one of the most extensive and nicest setups in android by far to me!

Well, I like a lot of screen real estate, and sharp, small-ish text (I bought a 13" Macbook Pro just for that 2560x1600 resolution - and I'm using Windows 7 on it), but I have my DPI set to 370. Android Pro Widgets replace any of the Sense widgets where possible (SMS, Agenda) because they can render a smaller font, but I still use the native 4x1 Clock/Weather widget, and of course the Mail widget - and I have all my quick launch items set to use folders - System, Social, Travel, and Multimedia.
s-off is coming
s-off is coming dsb said that is was close. I was a strong "htc" until the galaxy s3 came out back in July. After being frustrated with Samsungs weak radios i came back home to HTC. I was on the fence between this and the note 2 but after playing with the phone on launch day I bought it. And now the note 2 comes out in 2 days and i could care less.

s-off is coming dsb said that is was close.

I wouldn't expect s-off anytime soon, regardless of what dsb says.
Now if jcase says it, I will believe it (assuming he isn't doing his regular rickrolls).
