Hi to all,
I'm owner of a GSM Hero and I'm new to this forum. After the last announce made by HTC (Hero update in june), I'm thinking to install a custom ROM...but, cause I'm a newbie, I've few questions and also...I'm afraid to brick the phone!!! Is it dangerous???
1) I've read the tutorial about installing a custom ROM but I didn't understand when I've to install the last radio version. At beginning of the process??? After the backup?
2) I was thinking about VanillaEclair and VillainRom. At the moment these ROMs have GPS and data connection fully working?
3) Major known bugs of these ROMs (all apps are working, etc...)? Are the acceptable for everyday use? (I don't use exchange contact sync).
All your opinions will be appreciated!!!

Rooting itself isn't that dangerous, as long as you follow the instructions and don't do anything silly like pull the battery mid wipe then you should be fine
1) Radio can be flashed at any time, I usually update the radio after the ROM is installed an setup.
2) + 3) I don't know about Vanilla Eclair, but there is very little the doesn't work with Villain ROM (very feature complete)
sequence
supposidely you have rooted the hero. its usually radio first and then the rom. radio actually can be changed before the rooting as well, if i'm not wrong.
The only way you can brick your phone is during a radio or recovery flash (which you won't be doing very often).

Only with an official update. I meant after you installed a custom ROM

Hi,
I am getting ready to flash my first custom ROM. I have a Hero with firmware 2.1-update1 and baseband 63.18.55.06OU_6_35.15.01. I have been following the newbie guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253) and I'm intending to flash FroydVillain 1.5.
My question is this: can I safely flash the latest radio before flashing the custom ROM? I figured this would make sense as I can check to make sure my radios work fine after the radio update before I install the ROM. Or will this cause problems?
Yep, can do if you want.
And its simple to roll back if you have issues.
Why should i upgrade my radio? I'm still running the one i got with the StockROM 1.5 and flashed like 8 CustomROMs already, but never upgraded my radio.
So, why should i upgrade my radio?

I believe the radio controls gsm/data signal and battery and some other things. So the newer the radio the better these things will be. So it's really a no brainier, but just make sure you flash the correct one or you'll no doubt brick your phone.

I know what it does. But what do you mean by better? Longer battery life? I doubt so. Better signal? Maybe.
What i mean is, what does it improve exactly and in what way?

As new towers get built their data (signature) needs to be registered to the phone before it will connect to them. The radio contains this data.
I'm going to upload Stock ROMs that I rooted and Deodexed. Anyone can use it as a base to develop or modify. All I ask is that you give me credit. That's all.
I will add all the ICS Bases. Just give me some time to do so.
T-Mobile ICS 2.14.531.3 R2
http://d-h.st/rfa
Telus ICS 2.14.661.2
http://d-h.st/pTd
Mobilicity ICS 2.14.1800.6

Videotron 2.14.1530.6 (Thanks to hellviruz)

Requesting a Telus Nandroid!
Would it be worth noting that this can get you back to stock rom, for those who maybe wouldnt know this. Very grateful and wifi works perfect.

Thank you hasoon2000, I'm looking forward to the Telus base. Is there any special steps for deodexing? I know some people ran into issues with that when ICS dropped.
Deodexing Amaze ICS
Deodexing Amaze ICS
baksmali-1.3.3.jar or compile latest from source.
Add com.android.vcard.VCardComposer.jar to /framework (missing dependency)
Check init.rc for BOOTCLASSPATH is probably;
Code:
core.jar:core-junit.jar:bouncycastle.jar:ext.jar:framework.jar:framework2.jar:android.policy.jar:services.jar:apache-xml.jar:HTCDev.jar:HTCExtension.jar:com.htc.framework.jar:filterfw.jar:com.htc.android.bluetooth.jar:wimax.jar:com.orange.authentication.simcard.jar
Use API level 15
dsixda's kitchen will deodex (if baksmali.jar is updated and missing dependency is added to /framework) the files but some will need to be done manually, adding missing paths (usually com.android.vcard.VCardComposer.jar) also read errors and/or check init.rc
There should be no errors other than ims-service.apk, which has one path that can be skipped AFAIK

Yes they can tell. This Rom will be deodexed. Stock is odexed. You might be better off flashing the Videotron RUU. But depending on what you're doing.. if you're going to send the phone in for repairs then they can tell for sure.
Ok thank you I am going to flash the OTA in this case

Flash this like a normal ROM or do I have to go back to relock, flash official update then root again. S-On
Nevermind, flashed in Recovery. I'm back to stock.
is there one from WindMobile?
Which one is technically the latest and probably with the most recent updates? Does anybody know how they are different one from another? Different camera apps? I assume since they are rooted and deodexed I can install any one of them from custom recovery without any problems as long as I'm super cid, is that right?

I'm not sure which one was released last but I do know that the Telus one is unbranded and I haven't had any problems with it at all, it's very stable, I recommend that one. That being said I believe there is something wrong with the one posted now as he requested a fresh nandroid to redo it. I gave him one, just waiting for him to have time to redo it and update the OP. If you're going to use that one then you may want to wait for him to update it.
I think the T-Mobile one has a different camera app I believe but the rest should be the same, afaik. Personally, I use the HD Camera Mod by NODOGT that Dark Nightmare modded for the Amaze and that works great.
As for being able to install any of these, you can. SuperCID is only necessary when you're flashing something to the phone in an "official" way such as through HBOOT or stock recovery. Even without SuperCID you'd be able to flash any of these zips because you flash them "unofficially" aka through custom recovery.
Can some one direct me to where the most up to date radio is for the HTC EVO LTE. And if you can be specific in your explanation to which file or files I need to flash, that would be great. I am S-off, so I have no concerns there.

You don't flash them in recovery. There should be instructions in that thread, which would also be the best place to post your question about it.

That's not the newest radios, and no, they are not flashed through recovery. They are flashed through the bootloader. If you aren't planning on updating to Android 4.3, however, those are the newest and will work fine. For more info, click the top link in my sig and read the section regarding firmware updates.

You are right, I forgot you do flash them in the boot loader. My question now is that I'm currently on 4.1.1 but may in the future update to 4.3. As a result, can you point me specifically to the file that I need to flash in the boot loader. Is the file I need to flash in the boot loader called 4.13.651.4 Sense 5 Android 4.3 - Odex or is it something else. Sorry for asking such stupid questions, but I'm getting confused.
If you want to update to 4.3 you should run the RUU. That will make sure everything gets updated. The RUU will also change how the internal storage is set up. In that same link I mentioned above, there is a link to all the applicable RUU's for this device.

Glad to help:good:
So I'm on my 3rd M8. They all from day one (literally as I walked out of the AT&T store) would reboot randomly, usually in the afternoon, all stock running the latest OS. On my 3rd I've installed Cyanogenmod and have been running the M builds (currently on M11), but now besides still freezing and randomly rebooting my wi-fi passwords get forgotten at random.
I have no answer for why this is happening, all i can think of is that its bugs in the radio version. Since I'm on my 3rd phone I can't imagine it's hardware and I'm not alone on this...
Has any other device that connects to your router also dropping signal and passwords too,or just your device. The latest AT&T radio is 1.19. I'm pretty confident boot loader will tell you that..Try other ROMs,maybe its a bug with the latest milestone release
Ill try the new radio. Last i checked it was 1.16. Since it happens in both cyanogenmod (and just today) as well as stock...im pointing at the radio too.
Seems to not reboot/crash when Wi-Fi is off.

Did you try to update the entire firmware package, or just the radio? Just thinking of this, since WiFi is one of the updated firmware modules. It still doesn't explain why we haven't seen this issue impact others. But worth a try anyway.

Firmware package includes hboot, radio, WiFi, Bluetooth and other modules like media; as well as kernel and recovery. It get updated separately from the ROM, and also requires S-off to flash manually.
Wonders_Never_Cease has all the recent AT&T firmware packages and instructions to flash posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/development/att-4-4-3-2-22-1540-3-debloated-sense-6-t2837365
Again, it doesn't explain why you have this issue on the stock ROM or an AOSP ROM. But its worth trying, for lack of any better ideas.

Nope. You can just flash the firmware by itself.
I only get rebos still with wi-fi on. I didn't try flashing one of those ROMs above...was slightly confused. However I did install the GPE 4.4.4 RUU. Hoping that radio/software combo will solve my woes.
I've flashed the GPE 4.4.4 RUU here, and changed the CID to GOOGL001.
No random reboots after 2 days! wi-fi seemed the be the big issue and it seems to be solved!
I hope this helps others who have had the same random reboots, seemingly caused by wi-fi problems.
