My dad just got the Froyo OTA on his fascinate, and the battery has been running dry in less than 3 hours without use, where on 2.1, he lasted all day with over half battery remaining.
I was looking into rooting his phone (I have my Inc rooted already) to get new ROMs/kernels to improve speed/battery.
If anyone could link me to an easy guide to root the fascinate, and suggest new ROMS/kernels that would give me better battery, I'd much appreciate it.
Thanks guys!
I would suggest reading through the stickies. All of the info you're looking for is in there.
I personally use both ComRom and Evil Fascination and both have pretty decent battery life.
Also FYI: this post is in the wrong section. There's a Q&A board for this stuff.
This should be in Q& A, but I had good luck with compromise 2.0 and a corresponding kernel.

The Inc people just post wherever usually. Thanks for the answers, I'll definitely look into it!

If the official ota is burning through battery like that, then he needs to take it in. There's something wrong with the unit.

That is not always the case, do a factory reset first, he may have had a app installed that worked just fine in 2.1 but may have a update for 2.2 because the original app may have issues with 2.2 like battery drain.
But always always always, either remove apps or do a factory reset before even considering taking your phone in to be replaced.
where do I go to flash esn? the 3G symbol still shows up on his phone, and seems to be working...how can I tell?
*EDIT* though to be honest, rooting, based on my own experience, is completely worth it if only for the ability to back up the phone lol
Look at the time without signal. Unless I put the phone in airplane mode for a few seconds after I reboot, I have a time without signal of around 50%. This is killer on the battery

As far as rooting and roming, use Odin to flash CWM, then boot directly into CWM, then flash custom rom of choice (i like com rom, but also hear good things about evil fascinate). That's about as easy as it gets, imo
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
so if this is the case, you'd recommend turning airplane mode on for a few seconds after booting?
Yes. Wait for media scanner to do its thing, then turn on airplane mode, wait about 5 to 10 seconds, then turn airplane mode off. You should see time without signal drop.
Edit: to view time without signal, go into settings - about phone - battery use - cell standby in case you didn't know

There are so many ways to go about rooting the fascinate. Odin is the simplest. If you Odin your phone with CWM you can go anywhere from here. Use this Odin package for CWM.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36791/CWM3_Voodoo.tar.md5 Brought to you by times_infinity.
Then download and install the ComROM with the undervolted PBJ kernel in CWM if you are going for battery life.

Ok, so would I follow the sticky in the Q&A section that tells how to get to/from stock with Odin, and then use that file? Or is there a better guide on using Odin?
Does the ComROM come with the PBJ kernel or should I just search that on here?
Sorry for all the basic questions, all of this stuff is waaay different than hitting "start" in Unrevoked and then just hitting "install zip from SD" in CWM lol
There are 3 versions on Com Rom, and the only differences are the kernels. One has no kernel, one has OTB (that's what I am currently running, and am getting stellar battery, with no undervolting), and one that has PBJ.
I assume you would just use that sticky in Q&A, as it is the only sticky in there. I have never looked at it, so I don't want to tell you one way or the other.

cool..thanks for everything!
While I still want to root, just to tinker with the phone and backup just in case, after a battery pull & wait one minute last night before charging, the phone now has over 80% battery after a full work day, so it seems to have worked.
Thanks for your help guys, I'll probably be back to ask some more questions (in the right section) in the future!
I wanted to see if I can post something without getting ridiculed. Seriously doubt that now cause I accidentally posted this in the general Q&A first and did not know how to move it or delete it so i am posing again here. Hopefully a moderator can just take care of that stray posting I made in the general area.
I am on my second ATT SGS2. First one had a GPS issue. Tried everything and finally convinced ATT warranty services that the problem was hardware. They said they would advance replace the handset. So I got it back to stock in every way except the flash counter, this was in December so long before I was aware of mobile odin. Flash counter was at about 12 when I was done trying different ROMs,mostly just try to get the GPS to work. It was in perfect shape, bone stock except for the counter. I cannot imagine I will have an issue, but has anyone ever heard of someone getting charged on a return to stock phone that had a flash counter above stock? Ill update once I know for sure the outcome.
My real question, does everyones SGH-I777 crash on occasion? If so how often? I so happy with the current code that is running on the phone with the exception that it sometimes sleeps and wont wake up, and sometimes it just plain crashes hard, locks up and has to be hard rebooted. Usually this happens about twice a day one or the other. I wiped before installing current kernel. The only reason I am not stock is cause I wanted the CKK6, 2.3.6 update to work and to keep root privaledges, but also needed my wifi cause ATT is throttling me down to dial up speeds when I reach 2GB. So wrong!!! Anyway thats another thread.
I loaded shostock with siyah kernel 2.6.35.14. after wiping everything including both caches. The GPS is solid now, phone is fast, battery is egh, I keep a charger with me... but it crashes hard from one to three times a day. Locks up playing tunes, or wont wake up with out being plugged in or hard booted. Do I have another defective handset or should I just go back to 2.3.4 and UKH7 or should I just deal with it and consider the crashes, "excellent opportunities to reboot."?
Thanks for the all the hours of fun, u know who you are.
I honestly don't remember my phone crashing at all. If it's crashing, it aint stable. Did it crash when it was stock?
yeah I mean duh right? The new handset was updated, rooted, downreved and flashed with the custom rom before it was put under any load, so I do not know if it would have crashed before. I have wiped, re downloaded, checked with hashtab and re flashed my current kernel, so it seems like it has to be hardware, again... ugh. Especially since no one else is having issues with shostock and siyah. I wonder how hard it is going to be to get warranty services to replace the second phone in 3weeks!? Lol.
Try going back to stock and run it for a couple hours to see if it still crashes. If it still crashes then more than likely hardware issues.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
If it's crashing on stock without SetCPU to set a screen-off profile, you have a hardware problem.
I haven't had a crash, freeze, or spontaneous reboot in ages - despite running kernels that a few others have reported stability problems with (and I have effectively halted my kernel until I can get to the bottom of those reports...)
Too often is when it happens regularly, period.
I'm running CyanogenMod 9 and have almost no crashes, despite it being experimental.

I reverted to stock last night shortly after posting this. Ran fine until re loaded SHOstock v1.9.2-UCKK6. It is not "crashing" but it will go to sleep and not want to wake up again. I can sometimes plug in the charger and that will wake it up but other times I have to hard reboot. So no more crashing, but will not wake from sleep about 10% of the time. Not a huge deal, but its a bit weird because I know that the code I am running is ok, and it seems the hw is ok, so... not sure why this is happening. Anyway thanks all for your suggestions etc.

This sounds like SoD (sleep of death) to me. I would recommend reading through Entropy's kernel thread (yes, it is a LOT of reading) but it might give you some insight into possible causes and/or solutions, and you'll get a great feel for where development on this device has come from, from the beginning...
I had the same problem using the latest siyah kernel, but never with entropy's. I would suggest flashing a new kernel.

1. To answer the OP question, I have experienced ONCE that was when I tried to run the Andy's TI-83 emulator on my virgin stock ROM. The result is either my fault or the application isn't compatible with the running OS.
2. With bone stock, it shouldn't crash at all. If it does, RMA.
3. If the owner(s) have "some fun" around it such rip it off, hack it up, install different kernels, different ROMs, ...... then please DO NOT complain the device is suck.
I've seen a lot of knuckleheads who tried to mod their devices, screw them up then claim "they're suck".

Thanks this sounds like a plan. I have to do something things have gotten worse. About 3 out of ten times I go to put the phone to sleep now, instead of blinking out the phone takes a screen shot. My fingers are no where near any of the other buttons and it takes a screen shot over and over when I press the power button. I have to move around from screen to screen, hit the home button and then hit the power button to put it to sleep. Weird stuff, could be worse though. Did I say that I thought the phone sucks? I thought I read in one of the replies up there something like that. Aside from the GPS issue that was hardware related, and problems I have brought on myself because stock wasnt good enough, this is hands down the most awesome piece of electronics I have ever owned. iPhone smyphone. I just need to find the perfect turbo charged, rooted but as stock as possible configuration that is stable and I will be set. I really like where I am, hopefully the kernel you suggested does not change much but fixes the problems. Thanks again all.
Grab one of Entropy's DD Kernels and flash it with CWM. I'd suggest getting one from Jan or earlier. His latest ones are trying to track down a issue.

Ok the noob is going to shine through here... but you say to flash with CWM. With my current config, when I enter recovery mode I am taken to the siyah kernel recovery console. Are we talking the same difference here, and when I go to flash as you mentioned can I do so with Siyah recovery or shall I flash with something that will give me back cwm first and then flash the config that you mentioned in your reply?

So I updated my S3 to the latest Android version 4.1.1 and ever since i've had some issues. Firstly, it's taken a hit on it's performance, it's nowhere near as quick and responsive as it was before I updated (this is the first firmware update i've done since having it)
I've also noticed that my phone doesnt vibrate when receiving text messages. With sound on, the sound does make the noise it's supposed to, just no vibration, also when the actual phone is on vibrate mode, texts dont vibrate when received - the phone vibrates when I receive calls though.
I've checked the settings and everything is how it should be, so i'm not sure why this happens - has anyone else noticed this and also, how can I roll back to the previous firmware version!?
I have been using custom roms on my gs3 since day one ( 4 and a half months ago ) so i cant comment on performance of stock roms, but my my phone is faster than ever with Insert Coin 2.3.1 JB. Considering custom roms are based on official roms i would suggest doing a hard reset cause your device should be faster after the update. To enable the vibration you must do it within the settings of the message app. Open messages, press the menu button and enable vibration. Excuse my english. Hope this helps.

First day with custom rom user too.
I suggest ditching the stock firmware and try some custom one.
It's easy and no harm can be done(if you do it right of course)
The one i settled in the end is Foxhound so i'd reccomend you to use that one.
You can skip the kernel part and have the stock one but there are lots of good ones out there,so i'd suggest to start with Yank Lou kernel or galaxiysh since those are close to stock and don't need user adjustments.
If you need something more advanced to give you control try Perseus(i'm using this right now) or Siyah.
Cheers,George.

factory reset .... not always necessary after an upgrade ... but if there are any performance issues after flashing often sorts things - I ALWAYS did a factory reset after flashing my old SGS1 as it was very susceptible to flakey performance post-flashing for example.
...and upgrading from ICS to JB ... I'd reset if not completely happy.
That is true. Real multitasking was gone on JB.

My S3 also was very slow first. Then suddenly it ran fast a few hours after the update. Now again the launcher very often hangs up.

I don't think it is anyhow faster than ICS it only looks faster through modulation of the animations.
Anyhow it is not slower after all though the benchmarks suggests it might be a bit slower.
I think that data wiping can fix many issues. if you would like to go back to ICS, all what you need is to visit samfirmware.com ,download your suitable rom and flash it through Odin which I prefer so much over the OTA

Thanks for your input guys, I think I might look into getting a custom ROM. I won't mod my phone too heavily, maybe find a nice battery saving app and also a few performance tweaks. It seems like there's so many out there I don't know which one to choose! I flashed my HTC sensation when I had it and for that I used the android revolution HD and didnt face any issues (that I can remember) so I might use this, or just see how I go. I havent looked too much into flashing for the S3 so I guess I best start looking!
Guys,
So i've just rooted my phone and installed the android revolution HD ROM by mike1986 and its ALOT faster than when it was on stock!
Whilst i'm here, what's the BEST way to save battery life? I know they're mentioned all the time but has anyone actually noticed any difference when trying to save it at all?
i must say JB is very good in performance..
using Omega v31 here... damn smooth

I updated my Galaxy S2 via Odin(PC) from Stock 4.0.4 to Stock 4.1.2. All went fine, phone works smooth and fast. But there was a massive battery drain. Therefore i wiped data/cache, did a factory reset, everything is new an fresh. Phone still works smooth and fast but battery drain doesn't change. Take a look at the screenshot. Is there something i can check and change?
Thanx in advance.

Thanx for your reply. But i cannot confirm that. Never had such a behavior. Flashed a few ICS 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 Roms and either thery're draining or not unless i'm able to change or fix somthing. It never improves on its own. Maybe it's my bad luck only.

Yes, you are right. But i read a lot about battery drain problem in the dev thread and also tried a few, ok not all, things to fix it. Yes i will.
But, generally, flashing different Roms causes different issues. Reading solutions based on different ROMs, Custom ROMs, etc. isn't very helpful. There may be general solutions for this damn battery draining problem. But until now nothing fits to me.
In the end i hope to find a solution or i will go back to ics.

Your absolutly right, i read many problems, but with those stats are weird.
1) Just try to re-flash the ROM and after go to recovery and clear everything(dalvik, data etc).
2) Use the option to reboot.
3) Turn off phone -> remove the battery -> Try to turn the phone ON without battery one or 2 times -> wait 2-5minutes more without doing nothing -> Battery back in.
4) Charge up to 100% (when the icon appears).
5) Wait for 1-3 cycles and check if its ok.
6) If you have media draining check my signature link.
Issue solved, probably
I probably solved my battery drain issue while doing what CrisR82 suggested in his post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37227296&postcount=10017
" Battery drain is caused by a permanent wake-lock (I had that issue).
For everyone with that problem, here's what I did and got rid of it:
1 - fully drain your battery (0%, to the point where it won't power-on at all)
2 - recharge your battery without turning on the phone
3 - go to recovery mode and wipe both data and cache
NOTE: backup all your contacts, messages, whatever...this will delete everything!
(I formatted my USB storage aswell before step 1, but I think that's not necessary)
No wake-lock for me, 17 hours use, 12% battery down (only checking the clock every once in a while)."
As it seems it worked for me also. Did it yesterday evening and keep in mind i did a factory reset therefore i had to reinstall everything. Battery is behaving normally again.
Maybe this helps the one or the other.

Now, right solution
Ok, my mistake!
At first it seems that there is an improvment in battery life like i said in the above post. There is ... but slightly. Not enough, not acceptable at all.
To make it short.
I did a clean install. That's it. Wiped everthing, pumped the battery up to 100% and flashed Samsung Stock jb 4.1.2 again. And it works now.
Thanks all for your advice.
Greetings

Me again.
My battery drained in 21 hours even after reinstalled everything after a full wipe. Couldn't find out what process caused the drain. Used bbs and its stats say android os, screen and Android in sleepmode is using most of the battery.
I'm back on 4.0.4 now. Waiting for next jb version.

Thought I should share that I tried the same and face the same issue. Before JB, on completely stock 4.0.4 (no root), I would charge after three full days (72 hrs). Moderate/normal use - no heavy gaming. Under JB it drained in less than 24 hrs with very moderate use - mostly idle. Back on ICS i now get the same battery time as before.
I should add that my phone came new with ICS 4.0.4 installed. Two friends of mine have upgraded theirs all the way from GB -> ICS -> JB and they exeperience significant battery improvement. Being a noob, I don't understand whether this makes any difference. Simply coincidence?
All the best.

New ROMs are always smoother than previous ones, once you flash em you get in cant-put-it-down mode. You need at least 1 week to judge battery life on any ROM. A couple of days to set it up and a few days to see how it behaves.
Once you get things going you never go back, that's a fact.
Be careful on 4.0.4.
Sent from the little guy
Hello guys. I bought a Galaxy Note i717 from ebay a few weeks ago. I planned to use it as a spare phone, so I normally kept it at home for my nephew to play videogames or used it for work, always on airplane mode connected to wifi. Two week ago I started using it with a sim card and I noticed the battery drains really fast. I purchased two OEM batteries thinking it might be a problem with the battery, but it wasn´t. Battery holds for approximately 4 hours with normal use. I tried a factory reset but it didn´t worked at all.
Phone is running stock 4.1.2 since I got it. I was thinking on rooting and installing a custom rom and kernel, but I am wondering if it is some hardware issue because in come cases I´ve noticed the phone is a little bit overheated even without using it to much.
Any advices? Should I try the custom rom or did I lost my money?
When the Note was updated to 4.1.2 Jellybean alot of users complained of rapid battery drain. There are some great roms out there..Bigfu or Ptrm3..just search development. I have tried them all and they all have something to offer. The developers here are great for us average users who sit back and wait for a new rom. The At&t update was horrible for me used it one day then switched to custom rom.

You mentioned that the problem started since you put a sim in it. Could the problem be that you are in a weak service area and the phone is constantly searching for a better connection? That can kill a battery quickly without using the phone.

That´s the moment I started noticing the battery drain because that´s when I was using the phone regularly. Before that, I just left it at home for my nephew to play some games or just used it for sending some work emails at home, so I never noticed if the battery was running out fast or not.

I didn´t knew anything about the users complaining after 4.1.2 update. I will take a try with a custom rom, I hope that is the real problem and not a hardware problem.

I see we have the same problem. I upgraded to 4.1.2 just when I got it, so I can´t tell if the upgrade was the cause of the battery drain. I will try flashing a custom rom.
