Check out "Screen Filter" - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Prime is a glare monster. I used to get a headache when surfing web at night... no longer now!!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
Awesome app.. allows really reduced glare. I have set it fot 40% lesser brightness.... and that works at night time best for me.
My kid also finds reduced brightness much better, when i read out stories for him from the prime.

I'm a bit confused. The lowest brightness setting of my prime isn't what i would call 'glare monster' at all.
Do you use this app to replace the primes brightness control or does it work in addition to it?

It works as an addition

Works in addition to it. I take off 40% brightness from the lowest possible prime brightness.

i use this at night all the time on my galaxy s2 due to the fact that the screen is still bright as hell on it in pitch black dark. Great App.

Be aware with this installed if you try side load an apk it won't let you install it.
You must deactivate this to sideload an apk.
Something to do with screenoverlay. It's meant to be like this something to do with security from google.

Superdim root required

Check out superdim (root), its in the market for free, it works amazingly well. I always noticed the atrix was particularly bright even at its lowest setting. I never *****ed because I was just happy to have a bright screen visible in daylight. Now we have best of both worlds.

AdjBrightness works well too.
Nice, I will have to check these out. The blindingly bright "dim" setting was one of my pet peeves with the Atrix!
I have check it now, and it works like a charm, very low bright. excellent.

Thanks! I was actually just noticing that super dim didn't stay dark. What a great idea
Edit: I noticed that super dim actually darkens the screen while this new deal simply puts a dark patch over the screen. That's the difference between root and no root lol
Ps use both for super reading mode!

I've been using Elixir which does all sorts of stuff but one of the options is a tggle widget that lets you shuffle through up to 5 brightness settings. I use Auto, 5%, 12%, 40%, and 60%.

Well after playing with screen filter, I'm not crazy about it after all. It does nothing to the backlight but puts a grey tint to everything which makes it hard to read at the lower levels.
However, I've been emailing the author of superdim. He's already put out a version with the home screen profile shortcuts I asked for.. wish more devs were that responsive!

Side note I somehow got the dimness to stick through a screen off. Start at boot would be nice tho..

I actually just found him here. [APP] Superdim
It seems like the brightness after wake sticks as long as it's at 20 or above. It's like 20 equates to 0% in phone settings.
It's funny, most noticeable at 0. Hit the power button to shut the display off, and you notice it gets brighter before turning off.
Just tested this on my MT3GS, I can set it at 0 and it stays there. Even after a reboot.
[EDIT]
Working with the dev some more, I think he's got this fixed in the next beta! It restores the dim settings after wake! Stay tuned!
Seems to be fixed... my phones lowest is 30... very weird

[Q] What can we do about the screens brightness?

I've search for both "screen" and "brightness" without any results.
Is there anything we can do about the brightness of the screen? It's very low, even if you have it on max. Is it a hardware or software issue?
I've seen a lot of reporst of bad screen brightness, but can't say I've ever experienced a problem. I had more issues with my HTC desire, I could barely see it outside on a cloudy day. The XP I can see fine most of the time.
What are you using to turn the brightness up/down? There is a widget to turn it up and down, but it only makes it go up to 175 (iirc). I use power manager. This changes my brightness depending on different scenarios. Similar to juice defender type things but a lot more basic. The best part of it is the screen timeout and brightness settings.

That's one of my problem also, the poor brightness of our phone, At first I thought there is an app to increase it, but there's none..
When im using it under the sun, I cant really see what I'm doing to my phone especially when there's my finger print all over my screen, so i always bring my cleaning cloth.
Yeah i have tried every app out there in hopes one would work but that sensor just has to much control i guess.
Hopefully someone will figure it out eventually.
I guess some people are not bothered by it at all so possibly the people who would know how to fix it just dont care enough to.
On the R800x, there is no auto-brightness to enable. It is all manual. 100% seems to be bright enough to read stuff outside in the sun. I don't know that there would be a way to push it even brighter.
A number of people have been claiming that if you remove the pre-installed screen protector it becomes a lot brighter. Maybe that might help you if you are willing to risk the screen scratches.

Yeah by removing the protector the screen becomes much more brighter.. The toughened glass seems to be holding up quite fine though.
For a short 30 seconds experience with factory superglued protector, all I can say is remove it. Much better light sensor response, better contrast and much much much better finger swipeability on the mineral glass under the plastic protector...
Also now as I have phone, I'll see how to disable LS.

I was talking to Doomlord the other day about this, the ALS seems to be part of the kernel. The exact location of the sensor parameters is /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als. You can edit those parameters but nothing sticks on save/exit.
If you want to see how crazy the ALS is, fire up logcat in adb and watch what happens when you pull the phone away from a bright light source.
The only problem is some people love the ALS, and some people hate it. I'm in the hate it camp. I'd rather be able to adjust full brightness manually. It would peg the CPU a lot less too in certain lighting conditions, actually improving performance.
To that end, wondering if there is some kind of kernel extension or module that can be flashed, or if it has to be the whole modified kernel that is replaced.

I tried to solve it through editing the hw_config file, but had the same problem of results not sticking/working correctly. Enable would switch to 0 for a limited time before switching back to 1, and definitely after a boot, but still seemed to be functional and operating as if it was enabled, i.e. the functionality appeared to happen more slowly than rapidly on the fly. Also, the 254 variable never stuck at all, so that test failed, heh.

Would you need a custom hw_config for a custom kernel mod?

Now this is where problem starts: no LS config in hw_config so I can't manage power modes like on older Xperias.

I would imagine we could alter the settings.apk framework to include a checkbox to enable/disable Automatic mode for light sensor, and if off, revert to manual change. Is this a correct assumption? It might be easier for the end user than enabling and disabling a module at terminal prompt or yanking things from the system image or (heaven forbid) the running OS. It would certainly involve a bit more work, to be sure. However, could also just alter the framework to run insmod commands through BusyBox so that we can insert and remove modules. *shrugs* Just thoughts, not mandates. ^_^

[Q] Auto brightness issue?

Is it just me, or is there some problems with the auto brightness feature on this phone? From time to time the screen suddenly get a lot darker, even without the lightning in the room changing at all.
My phone is Telenor(Norway) branded, with the firmware: PDA:XWKF3| PHONE:XXKE7| CSC:TENKF1
Did some searching on the issue, and found some articles saying this should have been fixed in a firmware update, checked with Kies and i got the latest firmware, so either this wasn't really fixed, or is there something weird with my phone? Or something else maybe?

Yep your hand is over the sensor. I run with it disabled since it doesn't work well at all, and it's so easy to manually adjust brightness by swiping the notification bar.
Gotten a clearer view on what the problem is now, the auto brightness it self seems to work, but it's a bit slow and very direct. If am in a light environment and it gets dark, it doesn't start lowering brightness right away, but it takes 3-5 seconds and boom brightness goes very low. That's why i thought it was something wrong with it.
In my opinion they need to smooth the auto brightness out, and let it react faster, would make it a lot better.

I returned my Mega 6.3 because of the Dim Bug

Unfortunately the "Dim Bug" forced me to return my Mega 6.3
You can read more about it here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382134
Sometimes the screen on my i9205 dims the screen down to maybe 50% brightness even though I have manually set it to 100% and the screen timeout to 10min. When checking the brightness slider it's still at 100% and there's nothing I can do to make the screen bright again besides rebooting the phone. Anyone else seeing this "Dim Bug"?

This does not sound like a hardware problem.
If Samsung acknowledges it they should be able to fix it by an update.
It's a feature, when the phone gets hot its reduces the brightness.

First of all... if it is a feature it very poorly implemented. There should be a message about it and the brightness slider shouldn't stay at the maximum position while forced at 50%.
Is there a program that can display the temperature you claim dims the screen? When it happened to me I could see the battery temp on my homescreen and it was only 33°C... not warm at all.
I really hope this is a bug and not a feature, because if it's a feature then I will never be able to buy the Mega again.

Does your screen dim when the phone gets hot? I heard in another website that the Mega displays 'brightness adjusted to avoid overheating' before it dims. Never happened to me though and I have played NFS for hours on my Mega that is inside a gel case. Could be a software issue that can be corrected with an update.
I don't think it was a heat issue. Wasn't playing games or doing anything intense... just web browsing and reading. Didn't use a case.

A possible fix for the Full (Auto) brightness issue !! :)

Well i am calling it a possible fix as i am still testing it. I am talking about the full brightness issue that many others are facing too. The issue was the brightness would still vary automatically depending on the ambient light even when the auto brightness was switched off. So when you are in a dark room even if you wanted you could not turn the brightness to 100%. Initially when i just bought the phone for few days i felt the screen looked a little less brighter compared to how it looked in the showroom, so when i searched for it found out that so many of them out there have the same issue. You can just test it by switching off the auto brightness and keeping the brightness to 100% in a dark room and when you project a flash light or some light source on the sensor next to the ear piece the screen would get brighter and when you take off that light the screen would again become a little dimmer. I for a second thought it could be some kind of feature as well. But what ever that was i dint like it as could not pump up the brightness in a dark room to its full capacity even if i wanted it. And thats such a shame for such a beautiful display.
So i first wanted to flash some custom ROMs and see if that makes any difference. First i flashed a custom rom from the S6E android development section but the issue still persisted and after a day's observation i again flashed a ROM today from the s-6--s-6-edge-unified-development thread and after flashing the ROM i went in to settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and switched it on, since then the brightness varied just once right after the colour adjustment was switched on but now i am continuously able to pop up the brightness to 100% even in the low light area and seems like the issue has been fixed !! I have been observing it for the last 3 to 4 hours.
So who ever has this issue can try this out and let me know if it worked. I would not say the ROM installation is a must, first try turning on the colour adjustment under settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and if it doesnt work then try flashing the ROM and again doing the colour adjustment and let me know if it worked for you !! But after what ever changes you make do a reboot and give it an hour or so.
EDIT : As i was still testing it unfortunately the bug showed up again so i finally decided to flash an S6 ROM ( Not S6 edge) on to my S6E and to my surprise the issue was solved !! Now i can confirm that its just a software bug and hopefully samsung will fix it !! If any one wants to try flashing a flat S6 ROM let me know i will leave a link here with the kernel to be flashed. Hopefully this helped !!
I will test it..thanks for this
Can somebody confirm this as a possible solution to the bug?

I'm surprise so many people still recommend Lux app when it is useless for this issue. The issue is that the phone always has some autobrightness turned on even when we set it to be off. Even when you set Max brightness in Lux app, it's still only Max what the phone will do without Lux. Therefore, for those that want super bright all the time, Lux is useless.

Let's say that it is a really annoying issue in darken places because the brightness is too low. Try to compare the s6 edge with any other phone (s6 flat for example) and you will see how the issue is annoying! It is surely not a feature because the s6 flat doesn't do that. Moreover samsung admitted it is an issue (I have spoken with them several times), the funny thing is that after 2 months it is not solved yet.

What? That's not the problem OP is talking about? Brightness too low in dark places? No one has this problem, and if they did, a 3rd party app like lux would have fixed the issue.
Lux does not fix the issue. Many tried. I tried. I set Max brightness using Lux and its not as bright as it could be. You could try for yourself, turn off auto brightness, manually set Max brightness in both settings and Lux, go to a dark place and shine a flashlight on the light sensor. Screen will become brighter.
Then you'll understand that Max brightness does not work with setting and with Lux. Then you'll be enlightened... but then you can also choose not to try this and go on with your life as ignorance is bliss. When something doesn't work, most people call it a bug while some people choose to call it a feature
Sent from my SM-G925T
I thought the extra boost to brightness was a feature and helped battery?
Set to a certain maximum, on bright light situations (outside in sunlight, maglight on sensor) the display will boost to an unnatural brightness to aid visibility. On return to inside light levels the phone returns to normal.

It's not a feature its a bug. Every s6 edge has this issue . Maybe not everyone realized as you for example but it's for all s6 edge.
You can see it clearly comparing in a dark place a s6 flat and a s6 edge. The flat is way brighter than the edge so this is clearly a bug

I also think this is more of a "feature" then a bug.
It originally was a bug before the maintenance update because the screen would not dim to 50% brightness before timing out completely. Unless the screen was in the (what im calling) super bright mode.
Since the maintenance update the screen will now dim to 50% before timing out altogether.
But we still see the screen go into super bright mode in very well lit areas (ie direct sun) When i look at the screen in this mode though i notice the colors dont look real. Which leads me to believe that this is more of a feature to ramp up the screens brightness when you are in situations that might make the screen hard to see (ie direct sunlight)
