Installing ICS with S=OFF - HTC Rezound

I'm brand new to this phone and the rezound section on xda. I bought two of these phones yesterday and have both of them S=OFF at the moment. (Last night's fun)
In hboot they say "locked" even though S=OFF on both devices. I'd like to install an ICS ROM, but I'm not really sure what I need to install first before installing the ROM so it doesn't get all messed up.
I remember installing/flashing something on my Sensation to get ICS running on that device, but I'm just a little confused with the steps in the Development section because I'm new here.
Help?

HBOOT 2.11.0000
I flashed the hboot after jhboot and I'm not sure if this is the right one for ICS?
android Version: 2.3.4

I would suggest running the latest RUU and then installing whichever ICS ROM you want.

woah wait what
what are you guys saying?
I was stock,GB,rooted, SOFF.
my hboot said 's-off' and '***LOCKED***'.
you don't need to do anything special, you are s-off!
just get the 600mb ph98img.zip from the latest leak and drop it on your SD card.
it'll have to flash twice (first reboot after boot/recovery is flashed, then it does the rest the second time through)
that's how i went to the leak, still locked and s-off. and it runs great!

So its just that simple for those of us SOFF and GB?
1) Put the PHxxxx.zip image on the SD
2) Boot it into HBoot twice (not flashing via recovery)
3) Flash over our favorite ICS Rom
No patches, no nothing? Is this right?

There are like 10 files in this link.

I have S=OFF, I'm running GB, with the stock ROM and all the specs I told you. I'm not exactly clear on which one I need to install before installing a ICS ROM.
Do I install an ENG hboot... Do I install a ICS RUU file or a GB one? I'm assuming the bigger the number the newer RUU?

I'm not sure when you say about rom... i'm flashing the 600mb leak file from yesterday (5/7/2012) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641249
it has the radios, boot, recovery, kernel, rom, everything. I just did it all, like an OTA upgrade.

Is there something wrong with the Custom ROMs? (Please Developers don't stone me)
I just came from a device with tons of custom ROMs that were way better than anything stock and would install a kernel and everything through recovery when you were installing the ROM...
I'm just not used to the process yet with this device.

I don't think there's anything wrong with them.
I just haven't taken the plunge yet, still researching.... regardless, Once you're fully up to date on the latest RUU, going to a custom rom based on it will be a piece of cake. But i'm not sure the developers have updated their roms to all the latest leaks, in which case, check with the rom you're trying to upgrade to - I'm not certain they all include new kernels/radios...etc. like the leaked ICS does.

Great question, let me test that right now.
Edit: seems to not work straight up with the one from the market. i'll check a different .apk that I have here, i know the custom roms use their own .apk's usually.
as i recall from doing this on GB, you gotta configure it right, and then it'll work. But you DO need root, so after you RUU, install AmonRA 3.15, and run the su/superuser install from the recovery menu.

md5s are different in radio and mdm9k images, for whatever thats worth
has anyone that ran the full RUU and unlocked tried to re-install an older gingerbread or ICS custom rom? if so did it work,or are you now "stuck" on this leak?
not being quite sure if i wanted to run the whole thing,i flashed the boot and system images and the phone is unusable because of the bootloops
im thinking the factory images are not happy with the 2.01.605.11 firmware so im wondering now if once you install the new hboot, radio, etc, if the older custom roms do not work

Yes, the older custom roms will not work well with the new firmware. They run fine, but in my case you suddenly didn't have access to your external SD card . Some have lost both cards . Restoring with Scott's rom fixed this for some, I had made a backup of the stock RUU rom so just flashed back and all was good again. Then I flashed Scott's rom. Sounds like something changed with either the mounting points or the mmcc dev block on the new firmware.

From my understanding the new firmware doesn't play nice with the older roms. I'm very leery of running the ruu myself. What if the actual release uses the old hboot? Is that even possible?
sent from ics land
its possible that the official OTA may contain a different hboot, but not likely the old one. they have obviously changed some things that would ahve to be re-engineered to work with the old hboot, and their wouldnt really be a point. as much as it seems like a possibility i doubt theyd go to the trouble of releasing a leak just to eff with us
if it contains something different,it would be newer, like 2.22+. but im pretty sure the 2.21 will be the release hboot.
im not sure i want to upgrade yet, either, tho i beieve with the evo3d method we will be able to donwgrade if needed.
my main issue is that i still want to be able to use these older roms,at least long enuff everyone has updated their base and made the old version obsolete. i dont really care about getting back to gingerbread, but without s-off i think its best not to rush into anything.
grrr this whole s-on thing really ticks me off on my thunderbolt or sensation id just run the RUU and not care,as i could always go back to old firmware

Well, from what I see in the Amon Ra thread, the mount points for storage are definitely different. (The changelog over on Android Police even mentions a "fix" for storage issues.) As for me, I'm going to wait until drellisdee updates Amon Ra for the new firmware, by which point everyone ought to have their ROMs updated and most of the new "gotcha's" that arise worked out.

If your S-off and on Juopunut bear's modified Hboot, you can just download the exe. version of the GB ota found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338916 . Just be aware that once you run it you will be completely stock again including locked bootloader. If you still want to preserve your locked status I would flash this hboot in this thread..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1618140
Now, you will still be locked but able to run fastboot commands without unlocking. Now, you have to flash Amon recovery found here..http://www.mediafire.com/?l9dgzvvsdku7g3c This is the recovery that works for GB firmware. If you upgrade back to leaked ICS then you will have to flash 3.15.
Prior to flashing Amon Ra recovery.. you may watch to do a factory reset in hte stock recovery to prevent any possible data connection issues. Once you did that and now have flashed Amon ra.. you can either flash a rooted rom to get root back or to go to developer menu in Amon ra and install SU there.
Remember if you now flash GB based roms you don't need any patches, but if you flash ICS roms you will need this patch here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508118
It will be the old firmware patch you want to download.
After all this you should be set !

I am talking about if he stays on Gingerbread firmware , but wants to run ICS roms. Then he would need to flash the old firmware patch so his SD card mounts properly.
Yes, I get that ...
Yes, I understand why people need a patch after running the PHxxxx.zip
I am asking why the PHxxxx.zip leaves that a necessary step. What is missing from the PHxxxx.zip that requires this to be done.
I suspect when VZW releases their RUU, such a step will not be necessary (i.e., it will properly update the firmware). So I am trying to get to the bottom of why the PHxxxx.zip does not properly update the firmware.

Very useful information mjh. Two points/questions:
1. If the OP doesn't need to use fastboot commands, they can simply flash a PH98IMG.zip of the AmonRA recovery. They can be found in the Amon Ra thread. That way they still get custom recovery without having to change away from the stock HBoot. (I did this earlier today.)
2. Does the factory reset need to be done in AmonRa or bootloader?

I'm not sure I follow what you're asking about here. mjh doesn't mention running the PHxxxx.zip at all. If you're S-OFF, you don't need to, as the boot image will already be installed properly in recovery.
If you're S-ON, then you have to run the PH98IMG.zip in bootloader after installing a ROM like CleanROM 4.4. That's for installing the boot image, and more or less the same PH98IMG.zip that is included in the upgrades.
The firmware fix is not a PH98IMG.zip and can be flashed in recovery, regardless of S-ON. If I understand correctly, the latest ICS firmware changes around some of the mount points (and probably other things), and thus the ICS ROMs assume those new mount points. Running the firmware patch just updates the system files to point to the right place given the old firmware. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) As it's not normally needed (ICS ROM assumes ICS firmware), there's no reason it would be included in the PH98IMG.zip that has the boot image. Plus it's probably a different command than what the boot image flashes -- I'm not sure the bootloader can do more complex control flows like that.

An RUU will put you on the proper firmware for the ROM you are installing. It doesn't have to deal with the issue of you possibly running a different firmware than what the ROM was built for because it will just install the right firmware.

Help with upgrading...

I was wondering if someone could help me or point me in the right direction. I'm currently locked, rooted, s-off, GB firmware and radios (hboot 2.11) and running cleanrom 4.4 . I would like to have ICS firmware and radios. Reason for this is being on the ICS rom mixed with GB firmware & radios seem to cause alot of heat and fast battery loss. So what would be the best way to accomplish this? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Run the ruu if the firmware you like but be warned the heating probably won't go away

do the new firmware patch first, since you can't have two ph98img.zip's at the same time
after new firmware completes you can run the amonRA recovery install the same way (ph98img.zip file)
wiping is always a good idea when upgrading like this, to ensure no settings cause any problems.

So if I was S-OFF, already on ICS (let's say 3.11 firmware) and CleanROM 4.2.2 and I wanted to go to the new leak, how would I proceed?

Flash the 5/7 radios found in post 3 in NilsP business sense thread. Then flash Jb patched 2.21 hboot then flash latest Cleanrom, flavor of your choosing.

Well finally got time to sit down and get this done. I just followed what Cares suggested. Everthing went fine and it was smooth as silk. Was on CR4.4 but decided I wanted to go ahead and update to CR4.5. Didn't affect my root, S-off or sd card. Thanks again.

ROMs, HTC DevUnlock & S-On

Ok, I'm really curious about this. I want to quickly know what ROMs can be flashed to a phone that is HTC Dev Unlocked and S-On.
Currently running MeanROM 1.91 (and HTC Dev Unlocked & S-On), but I would really like to run Cyanogenmod on it.
I understand you can flash the radio in an S-On phone, but it has to be done in recovery, vs doing it in the bootloader with an S-Off phone.

You can flash whatever ROM you want, as long as you have a custom recovery.
And you can flash radios through recovery as long as your HBOOT isn't the one from the latest OTA (1.15). In that case, you can't.
You can. just backup, and do a full wipe, and and flash.

I think the only thing you gain with s-off is the ability to update your firmware.

I got my phone a week ago (actually on the 13th), and as soon as I got it, I let it do the updated to 1.22.
I have TWRP 2.2 as my recovery. HBoot is 1.15. In that case, is there any ability at all to update the radio to something newer?

What does the firmware changes?

I think he meant you can only update the radio firmware with S-Off.

Well, currently there isn't a newer radio, but if there was, you'd have to relock and take whatever the new OTA would be to upgrade your firmware (including radio).
Radios cannot be flashed through recovery with the new 1.15 HBOOT, nor can splash screens or kernels.

So, to relock, I would have to follow one of the threads on unrooting and relocking the phone? You can't do that by just re-flashing the stock ROM (its how it worked with my LG Optimus S and Motorola Photon 4G)?
The point is, I want to run CM9 or 10 once it becomes stable for this phone (when camera, MMS, and everything else works)

Actually, you don't have to re-lock to take an OTA, if you're on stock. But being as though you want to run a custom ROM, you'd have to nandroid backup your current setup. Relock the bootloader ("fastboot oem lock"), and then flash the latest RUU, at which point you'd be updated to the latest firmware.

I was just saying, based on what you said you want to run in the future, at which point there may be some firmware updates to actually update to .

I'm sure there will be.
So, the process would be:
1.) relock the bootloader
2.) flash the latest RUU
3.) unlock the bootloader, and re-root
4.) flash to the latest CM9/10 port (and install the latest gapps)

Cannot install ICS

So Sprint finally said there was a system update to ICS so I downloaded it and installed and it instantly popped up an error, didn't have any words it was just a picture of the guy with the warning sign. So I waited and it never did anything. I figured I would clear everything/factory reset and see if that fixed it. Nope. Even moreso, it wouldn't let me install any other ROM either. I did enough superwipes and stuff that I finally got the stock ROM to work so I'm back where I started.. One clue might be that I cannot seem to clear the sd-ext, it gives me an error there.
With it back in working order, if I don't clear anything and just try and install ICS from bootloader, what I show in the pic is what happens.
The last part about the E:error in sd card is what I was getting when all the other ROM's were screwing up.
Maybe bad sdcard

I don't see how when it works fine now. It's like something is messing with it but I have no clue what.
Re-lock your device and apply the update again.
Just do a fastboot command "fastboot oem lock".
Ugh, you cannot take an OTA if you are rooted with a custom recovery.

Right, that is not an OTA.

wow! are you F***ing serious? OH I'M ROOTING AND I'M GOING TO TAKE AN OTA? SERIOUSLY!? lmao! Other than that, I'm not going to say anything more. lol. I WISH I WAS ROOTED AND HAD 1.4 INSTALLED WHEN I GOT MY PHONE! but no! it came with 1.5 and it took a year to figure out how to downgrade. lol. oh well. now they've figured everything out. can s-off with being on 1.5. love everyone on here. Anyway, DO NOT TAKE AN OTA!
I am not the greatest with these things. You are saying I need to unroot my phone for this to work? And I need to somehow get rid of the revolutionary recovery thing? I don't know what OTA means but I can see it's part of the file name. Is there a non-OTA version of it that I can use? For some reason a lot of ROM's don't work. I have hboot 1.5 with s-on and cynogenmod and a lot of ICS ROM's just hang on the HTC screen.

You don't need to unroot, but you need to lock your bootloader and get the stock recovery back to take the OTA. The easiest way to upgrade to ICS without doing all that is to flash the new firmware, then flash a stock rooted rom if you want to stay on the stock rom.

Upgrade firmware through bootloader, then flash a stock rooted rom or a custom rom based on ICS. If you want to use the new kernel, you will have to upgrade hboot as well, or you can keep your current hboot and use the VM leak kernel.
For some reason a lot of ROM's don't work.

Could be a number of reasons, you need the new firmware to run an ICS rom, and you need the new hboot if those roms use the new kernel.
I have hboot 1.5 with s-on and cynogenmod and a lot of ICS ROM's just hang on the HTC screen.

You can't flash kernels with s-on, so you will need to get s-off before you want to use an ICS rom.
