If a new ROM is available, will AT&T force the update to the phone? I am worried if this happen while my phone is rooted, the root will be gone.
Will rooting PREVENT the forced update?
I am NOT planning to install Custom ROM, just rooted stock.
its ota it will be offered not forced.
also there are ways to disable the ota check that way you dont even see the prompts and can just wait for the community for a rooted stock rom.

Could you share this "ways to disable the OTA check"?
I just got my Note today and already I received a prompt saying that there is a new "AT&T Software Update". I have NOT rooted my phone yet.
Download titanium backup and freeze it.

I'm not sure but I got it too. It failed when trying to update though. Probably because I already rooted it?
I went ahead and let it update, it's a small 3.5 MB update so definitely not anything dramatic. Changed software version from E97010l to E97010o. No change in kernel or baseband version. Will check and see if root method for international Optimus G still works...
EDIT: Root still works. Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary, so feel free to update without the fear of losing root.
Here's a question: How are these updates pushed? My E970 is operating on Rogers and has actually NEVER been registered or run on AT&T. Are these updates pushed via the AT&T network to registered/operating phones, or via the Internet to specific IMEIs? In other words, will my phone ever get updates like this pushed?
How do we opt out of updates?

Hooray Arkansas! Anyway, I used Titanium Backup (after rooting and unlocking bootloader) to delete the LG FOTA app. I still get the FOTA notification, and it tries to install it. However, FOTA's install using stock recovery, and if you unlock your bootloader your stock recovery is overwritten by Clockwork Mod recovery so the device just reboots
Anyone else getting better battery life? It's been 12 hours since I last charged my phone and I've barely cracked off a 3rd of the charge.
This may be a question for another thread, but my update failed (guessing because my phone is rooted). If I temporarily un-root my phone and apply the update, would it work? I can then go back and root it again if need be, but I really just wanted to remove some AT&T apps and that was the only reason I rooted it in the first place.
Now I wonder if I've created a headache for myself in regards to updates. I should have done more research before rooting!

Like Deathmonkey said, the update fails because of your custom recovery. You would have to flash your stock recovery in order to receive the OTA. I think you can see how yo do this in the rooting guide thread.

what is the latest version of the software on your phone? I have E97010o, i sthis the latest version? I have a really bad battery drain due to fast dormancy on 3g and just wanted to check if the latest version takes care of this.

Man, I'm really sorry to be an idiot, but I couldn't find what you were talking about. I found the root guide in this forum, but there's zero mention of a recovery. Can you point me to the thread? Sorry, and thank you again.

I was under the impression that only the unlock installs a custom recovery. Does the root do this too?

That's a good question. All I did was root and uninstall a few AT&T apps. That's it. I haven't installed any custom recovery, but maybe that was done somehow?
Lesson learned for me: don't go messing with crap until I do my research
Edit: tried a hard reset, no luck of course. Only thing that did for me was buy me two hours now of trying to reinstall my apps. This is depressing.

Sorry to bump this back up. Just got my phone last night and rooted it with this method - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941699
This morning I saw that my phone has an update available. Is it safe to update if I defrost all my frozen bloatware (I did not delete any of them, just frozen)?
I've read that I should not do OTA if I unlocked the bootloader whichI have not done, only root. I also searched and found out that I should not do OTA if I have a custom recovery which I do not think I have from the rooting directions from the thread above. Just trying to be cautious.
This update does not fix our fast_dormancy problem. I tried it on my OG the first couple days. I am now rooted, unlocked and running nottach custom att Rom.

Thanks for the reply. Was your phone rooted before installing the update?
My phone is GT-i9300, original stock ROM is ICS, and i have update to JB through OTA which give me XXDLJ1.
Then I root my phone by :-
1. download mode, flash CF auto root via Odin.
2. restart, install Triangle Away and reset the flash counter back
I just want to have root.
So, the question is, why I'm getting "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"
If root , then can not check for OTA update anymore?
Or is there any other way? To have root only and everything else like just stock and can check/download OTA again in the future.
Thanks in advance XDA

Thats right.
But if youre on xda why do you want the OTA update anymore? Just flash a stock rom, update via odin as and when a new stock rom is available and root each time.

Thats a question that I was about to ask. . I'm having a few problems with my S3, and I want to correct them but I need root.
I also want to keep it stock, I was a flash addicted with my previous phone, but now I don't have time and I just want something that works, and I want also to be able to check for updates. .
Looking forward to more replies.

As I understood, you won't get OTA updates if rooted whereas you can get updates via kies. Flashing them will remove root though.

Thanks for replying,
I'm coming from Galaxy S1, to S2 and now S3, and Samsung is not the same anymore for me, They really listen to the customer, and always improve their UI and apps. S3 is a solution/improvement for all S2 n S1 complaints.
So, it is really nice to see some app/mod which originate from here at first, been integrate to stock rom of s3 e.g. the toggle, n the lack of led light of s2 n s1
Btw, development means, to make something unusable to become usable,, to make something good to be better.
I think, it is really convenience to just have OTA instead need to find a PC just to hv update.
As my S2, i gain root just by flashing temp CWM recovery through stock 3e recovery n then flash root. It simple as that.

I guess it is the device status "modified". If I understood well you can only get "original" when you flash a stock rom and unroot but please correct me if I am wrong as I never went back to original state till now.

just how often do you think an OTA update is pushed out?
Just use mobile odin if you want to flash any stock roms without needing a pc. Youll get the update far quicker via xda/sammobile than waiting for an OTA one anyway
Hi there, after receiving a new RAZR since my last one broke, I decided that I only wanted to root it and install cyanogen mod onto it. Fast forward 5 months and now I've decided I want to install the new MIUI v5 but in order to do that I need to upgrade from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. I downloaded the OTA update but after it attempts to install, it reboots and says update failed. Just some background info I have a GSM RAZR rooted and have safe strap on. Any ideas on how to make it not fail?

Thats probably because you removed some system apps, you need to flash ics again through rsdlite and then update to jb.

I don't think I removed any system apps though, I haven't uninstalled or disabled any apps that it came with.
You don't even need to upgrade. You can use this tool to install and boot MIUI without upgrading: http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/t...-between-jellybean-kernels-with-ease/?hl=dual

Hi.
I got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.3
Since i never really used Google Now, i used Root Uninstaller/Uninstaller Pro to "freeze" those apps.
Now, when i'm trying to get the OTA update on my SGN, it fails.
I used this app to freeze with
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.free
I suspect it has somehting to do with the apps being frozen.
My problem is, that Uninstaller Pro can't unfreeze the apps, when i try to do so, the problem just locks, and nothing happens.
Anyone got a suggestion on how to proceed so i can update my phone ?
I'm not scared of using ADB.
Best regards!
It is likely that the ota won't work as you are rooted, return to unrooted stock if that's what you prefer, I doubt simply unfreezing apps will help much.
If what you want is a rooted stock (most up to date) ROM then consider a custom one as I'm sure someone has or will make one shortly, otherwise go back to stock, take the ota, the reroot. Afterall its a nexus, rooting is quick and easy

When i went from 4.2.2 to 4.3 i had no problems with OTA update even though i was rooted.
And i never had problems with updating rooted roms before. But perhaps something has changed in 4.3 that i don't know of
I have been seeing a lot of folks talking about just going back to complete stock to install the update.
Is that the best option? Are we able to root 4.3 yet?
Do you need to reset S-off on the phone or what? I have seen a few different things out there today talking about this. My phone downloaded the update and keeps asking me to install ever so often but of course won't as I don't have the stock recovery console.
All help and info is appreciated!
I'm using Avatar ROM and my phone isn't even prompting me with the update. I'm really happy with my phone now so I'll give it a few days and wait for feedback on it.

I have just been using stock rooted as I have needed to keep my wifi calling.
I am used to Samsung's and Moto's and this is my first HTC I have worked with so the process of doing everything is a bit different.
Is there a way I can just flash stock recovery back and then install the update and be good to go?

You can leave s-off but you need to go back to stock Rom and recovery to receive ota. I have a link posted a link in the ota is coming thread that will help you return to stock. If you updated firmware you just need to use a usb otg and a usb mouse cause touchscreen won't work
