You need a micro HDMI cable. But that is all. You don't need a dock. You can pick up Micro HDMI cables at Verizon stores, or online. Most everything will mirror, but things like HBO GO app, and Sprint TV will not.
Bought my hdmi cable off Ebay for two bucks.... But thing is in mirror its stretched and blocky..... Not expected from hdmi. Is there a fix to this?

Yes, it's upscaled from 960x540 and even with full hd upscale, it's looking bad, only fix I know, is using mirroring through webtop, it looks much better there.

Yes, I have noticed that it is a little pixelated over standard HDMI. As for being stretched, you want to check the aspect ratio that your TV is using. There should be a button that something like "pic size" or "aspect ratio". It will give you options like 16:9, 4:3, zoom, pan & scan, and maybe zoom 2 or something. Make sure that you are on 16:9.
The other thing is that although the interface looks bad, once you start playing a movie, or game, they usually look a lot better. Those run better when webtop is not running. But if you are browsing the web, or something like that, run it through webtop. You can use the webtop over HDMI hack found in development.

you could always download the "nebtop.apk" assuming u still have webtop installed. this gives way better picture! and eliminates the need of a dock

While there have been mentions of using the Atrix with several docks time and again, I haven't been able to find this info: Does the Atrix have the phone mirroring capability without any docks - using just a HD cable, like the Optimus 2x has been shown capable of doing. And if it does, can we use the phone as a controller while playing games like Raging Thunder or Dungeon Defenders like seen in the 2x
I would assume it does with the hdmi out, if it is locked down I am sure someone will figure ou how to unlock it.
I am pretty sure it will work without one though. The dock seems to add the option to use other periphals like mouse and keyboard

I thought I saw somewhere that the docks are just a convenience thing, meaning you can just plop the phone in w/o worrying about connecting a bunch of cables. Couldn't you connect an HDMI cable and a USB hub directly to the phone and get the same options of putting it into webtop mode or multimedia mode? I would assume so because a lot of the CES videos show you being able to navigate both modes with the phone screen acting as a touchpad/keyboard if you don't have an actual mouse/keyboard attached.

hmm...the main reason why this question came to my mind was cuz of the fact that all the hands-on video demos I've seen so far seem to show a "webtop" or other special interfaces when connected to HDMI out. Was wondering if there is just a plain mirroring of phone screen which seems quite interesting on the LG Optimus 2x

I think that's true, but also when in webtop mode they've shown that you can use put the phone interface full screen, so you basically are able to do what you're asking.

I understand...thanks. But I guess my concern/question is best put this way:
What can the Atrix do while connected to a monitor via just a HD out cable? The Optimus 2x doesn't yet have any docks - and when connected to a monitor thru the mini-HD out, it has the capability to mirror the phone screen. Will the Atrix do this basically without any docks; the docks only enabling additional special features/intereface? Or is any HDMI out feature limited to using one of the docks.

I'm almost positive I saw a video from CES where the Atrix was connected to a TV directly with an HDMI cable, and it still gave the option of webtop mode or multimedia mode. If that's true, then you'll be able to put it in webtop mode and use the phone interface full screen. I guess we won't know for sure until the review embargo is lifted.

monoprice has adapters for 14 dollars. Also since its a digital signal u don't have to worry about the quality of the picture. If it works it works if the signal is bad it won't work.

Well, it is about what you would expect from WVGA stretched to a 1080p screen. Not bad, not great.
So it will record 1080p but outputs it at 800x480 via the hdmi? If that is the case then that's extremely disappointing.
I think it changes resolution when playing video. Notice how the screen blanks out briefly before playback begins? I think that's the resolution switchover. At least that's what happens on my international SGS2...
I want one.. but is it worth it? lol
just wanna verify that it mirrors your screen, correct? so its fully operational while outputting?
Complete mirror of screen. Can confirm movie playback is in 1080p. Fully functional.

How do you mirror your screen? I have the phone connected to the TV through this Micro USB - HDMI adapter, but I see nothing on the TV when I play a video.
UPDATE: I think I answered my own question by reading other threads: you need to actually separately power the adapter through the USB port on its side. That's a bummer, so you actually need a separate USB power source!

Mediahub files blocks hdmi out.
Works if i play first then plug it in.
But once i move files off mediahub to sd card, that trick doesnt work anymore

Ya mine is being blocked as well. I bought the OEM Samsung one to watch my media hub stuff. Kinda disappointing. As stated before if you start the playback before you plug it in it works quite well.
So I just picked up an adapter locally and while it works just fine, I'm not sure it's working as it should with regards to charging. If I simply have the adapter plugged in and then plugged into the wall, it charges very very very slowly. If I actually plug in the hdmi cable and do something like stream a video, buh bye battery life. It drains crazy fast.
This adapter from Amazon, does the charger help keep the battery at around the same level while in use or do you see it drop a good bit as well?
Oh and with regards to MediaHub, whether I start a video before hooking up this adapter or after, I still get the same error on my tv about protection, etc.

In regards to charging this phone charges slow and if your using it watching video it will just barley keep up. The phone seems to use almost as much juice as it get from the charger as your watching video.

Anyone try a MHL-VGA with this phone?
I've tried a few adapters. There's 2 different adapters from Samsung the one with product #2 worked the best for me its on Amazon I got it for 25$ and works well. Also mirroring works even better with a launcher like adw ex as when it switches into landscape mode it looks great on a big screen

Im running CM7 and have seen people use their HDMI outputs on their phones to plug directly into their tv and have it display what the phone sees, but cant figure out how they did it. I don't have a mini hdmi on hand and want to know for sure if it will work before buying one. Will it be a simple just plug and load up a game or emulator and it will instantly display? Or is it more complicated? Any insight would be great becasue i think this would be a great feature.
Dont trust me 100% on this but im pretty sure its should do exactly as you say, its called "mirroring" or something along those lines and i believe that besides mirroring if you wanted to do WebTop or UbunTop (kinda like a netbook) you would then need to do some mods/hacks but mirroring shouldnt take any extra mods or anything
Also just a tip - if you already have an hdmi cord and dont want to spend another 25$ for a micro hdmi to hdmi cord, most radioshacks carry a small micro hdmi to FEMALE hdmi converter for 10$, that way you could save a few bucks nd use your existing hdmi cord! Enless the converter is too bulky for what you will be using it for. I have one, works great!

Hey guys and gals,
Although I've been lurking on these forums for a few weeks I've finally decided to join and ask some questions.
I've completed my S3 PC, got a nice monitor with HDMI input, bluetooth keyboard and mouse and of course the MHL adapter. Everything works great.. time to get rid of the ageing PC in my office.
I have a question though, I've connected the S3 to my TV and the new monitor and I never get a 1080p connection.. it's always 1080i
Is there any way to force 1080p as I do get a slight flicker with 1080i
I'm totally amazed at what the S3 can do! BTW I was a total apple fanboy until I got my S3 a few weeks ago.
Cheers in advance... and yes I searched
so nobody else is having this issue?? I was really hoping to get some help here Anyone??
Sure your monitor supports 1080p? What hz does it run when using 1080i?

It doest output 1080p via hdmi just 1080i iv tested on all my tv sets and there are all top line and display tbe same i dont get any flicker tho are you using a good hdmi cable?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
thanks for confirming snowwhite007... I honestly thought it was able to output 1080p. I guess the slight flicker is due to the monitor then.
Flickering may also be due to the phone's HDMI chip. I'm not sure if it's clock source and other components are stable enough for a clean transmission of 31'104'000 (31,1million) pixels per second (1920 width*1080 height*30 images/second / 2 (interleaved) )
1080i and 1080p have the same native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels with the only difference being that "i" (interlaced) paints odd lines before even in 2 'ticks' while "p" (progressive) paints in one go from top to bottom.
So if there is any flickering it SHOULD only be every other line, can you confirm that?
Hi, i've got a question, can anyone give me a tip which keyboard and mouse works best with the s3?
I want to do exactly what you did. I want to use my phone as a pc.
So any Idea?
I bought a cheap bluetooth keyboard an mouse from Deal Extreme worka great
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Might sound like a silly thing, but just check your power saving isn't enabled, found that while it is enabled stuff like 1080 vids played really badly. That and what type of hdmi cable you are using could be factors.
I went on hols for two weeks and just took my S3 and a portable hard drive with hdmi and usb adapters and cables and used the hotels 1080p tvs as a full desktop, ubuntu and all
I am pretty positive that everytime I have used the hdmi it has been at 1080p. My guess is maybe a tv error unless it has run 1080p before?
EDIT: Oooh, just had another thought, what exact hdmi adapter did you use? Link included if that's not against forum rules? Know when I got mine I had to wade thru a lot of close immitations that don't display properly as they are cheap fakes sold as the real thing, one would only display 720p
can you tellme the model of bluetooth keyboard and mouse? i wanna do the same

I bought a generic mini bluetooth keyboard from amazon marketplace, it's not the bees knees but its about the size of the phone, bluetooth, rechargeable and only £10.
Works great for using the terminal or typing complex passwords etc when traveling or using as a desktop.
Also used the microsoft notebook bluetooth mouse 5000, got that cheap through amazon marketplace too.
Neither come with bluetooth adapters though so would need to by one seperately if ever using with a pc that doesn't have built in bluetooth.
1080i
Hi
I recently purchased MHL adapter from this website
http://www.clove.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s3-mhlhdmi-adaptor
And I have same problem as you. My TV only gets 1080i not 1080p.
However I don't get flickering, I just see that there is not enough vertical pixels (visible difference)
Tried bunch of different hdmi cables (cables that work with various 1080p devices with no issues whatsoever) and I always get 1080i.
Even when I try to playback video which is 1080p.
I'll try later if there is any difference if I plug it in through AMP (onkyo) and not the tv and let you know if there is any difference.
Cheers

Hi all,
Trying to output to TV - I have HDMI plugged into the TV and into the tablet using the HDMI port on the tablet but not seeing anything on the screen.
Is there anything I need to do to make the image output to the TV?
I am using a custom ROM - Woogy
Thanks
I am using the stock Rom. All I do is connect it as you have done and what ever is showing on the tablet is mirrored on the TV including sound.
I've not heard of Woogy. That may be your problem right there... All bets are off when you start using a non-factory OS.
I'm sure you had your reasons for the change to this ROM. You may want to investigate with the Woogy development community... Support of the HDMI is rather integrated to the OS.
AndroWook sorry
You might want to check what version of HDMI cable you have. I bought one from Amazon and it didn't work. Assuming the tablet or port was faulty, I RMA'ed it. Unsurprisingly, it was returned by Asus with a note saying "No fault found". It turns out that you need the correct type of HDMI cable, specifically 1.4. Look for "with Ethernet" in the description.
I bought a "with Ethernet" and it works great! http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0060AU5MW
I have connected to the TV via HDMI using Androwook 2.2 and Stock / Surdu_Petru / Hund's Kernel, all have worked in 720p mode no problem.
Some cables are stiffer to plug all the way in.
I will check mine again when I get home. Didn't work though when I tried.

Oh, and it was a 1.4 cable

I would try a different cable first. It should be pretty straight forward after you plug it in. If another cable does not work, I would look into that custom ROM that you're using.

I think there is no way to use crop mode in 4.2, btw in Mx player, you can still use "cut" and "zoom" mode, to watch the movie in real fullscreen. It work for me fine.
Be careful with the micro-HDMI port. Don't put too much strain on it. I have to position my cable just right to make it work now (My Prime is a year and a half old). I only use it to play controller enabled games on my TV though.

I have a similar issue with mine now. If it's not positioned properly the picture goes all fuzzy. I really need HDMI to work because we watch movies though the prime on the home theatre a few times a week!
You cant pick up the prime with hdmi plugged in or it will probably break. Has to be flat on a surface...
