Strange behaviour with browser and google satnav - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since upgrading to ICS, the default browser is pretty much unusable. If I scroll down a page, after a few seconds the page then decides to scroll back to the top, interrupting what I'm reading. Is this a fault or a setting?
Google satnav volume is much quieter than with gingerbread, how do I make it louder?
During navigation, it decides to sometimes flip between the female voice and a male voice. How can I fix that?
Is this all because of a possible corrupt upgrade or is ICS just crap?

Smells like a bad upgrade . Reflash firmware .

Well the browser doesn't seem to do that anymore since powering the phone off and on, but satnav is still quiet.
How do I go about reflashing the firmware and will I lose anything?
Also, how on earth is this happening,...

Can anyone please help? How do I reflash the firmware? Does that mean reinstalling 4.0.3 and where do I redownload it? Not only do I have the problems listed above, but now when I connect the phone to my PC, it recognises it and 'GT-1900' shows up, but when I go to open it to see my files, it takes ages and then comes up as a blank window. So i can't access my phone files on my PC. It worked once but won't do it anymore. What about the factory reset option on the phone, does that put the firmware back to gingerbread and should I try that and backup my data first?

It may sound stupid, but that problem is mainly down to you using a different USB port on the computer. It is usually the first USB port you connect your phone on a particular pc that will work fine. After that any other port on that pc will show the problems you described.
I noticed that problem and tested it out on 3 different computers. It didn't matter what USB port I started with, but it only worked on the first used USB port of each pc.

Yes I would back up my data first.
Although a factory reset will wipe everything back to a clean latest ROM you flashed. If however there was a corruption in the flashign of the ROM, then tha problem should remain. If you are going to all that trouble of wiping the phone, then you may as well reflash a fresh download of the ROM you want.

Thanks for the help. I'm using exactly the same USB port I was using with gingerbread, so I guess it's not that. I'll do a backup and then factory reset. I believe the reset keeps it on ICS, that's what you mean by the latest ROM I flashed, yes? I'm not brave enough to do odin tbh, so I'm going to hope the reset 'may' clear the issues I'm having, and hope it's not a corruption that remains. I fear you may be right but will keep my fingers crossed.

I'm surprised noone has wondered why opera mobile would view this forum in the old forums skin (as pictured above).

[Q] WiFi Error

Hello,
I know there are already a billion topics on this subject but after reading an awful lot of them, my problem still has not been resolved.
When I connect to the WiFi at home (WPA2-PSK) there is no problem: everything works as it should.
When I connect to the WiFi at my school, there is a problem. After connecting to either the Guest-account (no security) or the Eduroam-account (EAP with TLLS and PAP) the phone will load websites for like 1 minute, after that it will simply not load any webcontent anymore. When I check the WiFi-status it will first take a long time to open this menu (settings->Wireless connections->WiFi), and after opening it will show 'error' where it normally would show 'connected'. The only thing I can do at that point is rebooting the device, after which it will again work for 1 minute.
Things I tried:
Download WiFi-fixer apps off the market;
Load the developers drivers using *#*#526#*#*;
Connecting to both unprotected and protected WiFi;
Not using the internet: it will still crash after a while;
Flashing different original ROMS (KPN, KPO and KPH);
Disabling every connection but WiFi.
Non of these attempts had an effect. What can I do to resolve this error? All the other threads don't give adequate solutions. I am really desperate because this problem drives me nuts!
Current system configuration:
Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830
Android 2.3.3
Baseband version: S5830XWKP7
Kernel version: 2.6.35-perf-CL400247
Buildnumber: GINGERBREAD.XWKPO
CWM 4.0.0.9 and rooted
Thanks in advance,

Schools have certain protection that disallows certain devices from connecting (e.g. Mac Address Blocker)
You can complain to the school about it , or rather......use 3G .
Have a good day
No my school does not disallow certain devices to connect (e.g. everyone's phone just work perfectly), so that is not the problem. And this should not make the WiFi crash even if this was the case.
Nobody has any idea? I tried removing the SD-card (read on some other board this could have some effect) but this did not resolve my problem.
Me and my friend we both have the exact same problem at out school (BME)
But we dont have to restart our phone jusat simply turn wifi off and on again.

I've tried flashing Cyanogenmod but this does not fix my problem either. Presuming they just took the WiFi-driver from stock firmware this would mean the problem really is in the driver. I guess my only hope is Samsung, but I do not think they'll ever release a fix for this problem...
I am having the exact same probelm with my work's wifi, at home everything works perfectly, but just a minute on my work's wifi and a driver reloading is mandatory... i look forward for an answer but so far I haven't read of anyone trying to fix this (with greater knowledge than an average user like me)
hopefully a ROM or an official update in the future could fix this...
Same here.
I have the same problem. Eduroam works fine for like one minute, and then it stops working. The unprotected network doesn't work either.
I've got this issue with stock roms (I've tried most of them) CM7 and Gingerreal I think.
I think our SGA is a good phone, but first with SOD and now this... I'm sick of samsung's wireless
I'm still having this problem... ROMs I've tried:
1) Stock Gingerbread
2) Cyano Ace RC1
3) Cyano Ace RC2
Will flashing a new radio has a chance of fixing this?

You can add GingerReal to the list.
I have tried flashing, as you said, but no luck. (I don't remember which one I tried, but didn't work)
Ok, still no luck. I've tried with S5830XWKPY firmware and I got the same bug.
This is driving me nuts. I'll try with froyo
Another wifi problem is "not see wep wireless"
For Windows7, Connectify is being used for sharing internet.
but for wep passport, my galaxhy ace couldn't find virtual modem, but my old phone samsung monte saw and connected, what is the problem? what do you think?
(excuse me, for bad english)
on 2.3.4 XXKPH(with wpa2) after this issue got, when i try turn off wifi then on, he shows connecting disconnecting connecting disconnecting
but on 2.3.5 XWKS2 same issue only after i turn off and turn on, wifi connection works(not showing connecting, disconnected)
i didnt tryed wep on 2.3.5 but on 2.3.4 worked without any issues
hey guys, i was having massive problems with wifi erroring everytime i turned screen off for a while then back on. I tried flashing multiple different roms and kernels but nothing worked. The only way to fix was to restart the phone everytime.
however recently i accidentally stumbled on a solution for my problem. installed setcpu and set the cpu frequency to 480 max during screen off and without me knowing it this solved the problem. i havent had a problem with wifi erroring since. I guess the process which enables/disables wifi must malfunction if it is not getting enough clock cycles? because i never had this problem when phone was connected to the charger, only when it was running on battery.
maybe this is something you can look into. you can get setcpu free on these forums or buy/donate through market. Theres heaps of advice on these forums regarding how to setup/use it.

It didn't work for me. :'(
I'm still trying to figure this out... I think this problem may be related to the wpa_supplicant. Some random guys offer a "patched" version, but I didn't manage to install it without breaking the wireles T___T
Could you please share the "patched" files? I will try to install them and share my results.
And this phone has some other minor bugs(look at the linkspeed):

Hey guys,
I also have SGA with 2.3.4 official samsung ROM. I did *#*#526#*#* and some days later problem continued..
But, then all I did is, kept WiFi on all the time.. It doesn't consume battery much. and easily connects with any WiFi whenever I need in my case.
Nevermind, I read it's for froyo... I can give you the link, if you like.. http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=172042
It's in Spanish, though. It says: 1. Download the script, 2. Unzip it (SD) 3. Follow the instructions.
But, it'll probably break your wireless
I've installed "eduroam fixer" and "Wifi advanced configuration editor" but I don't even know what to do with that...
I still believe that the problem is in wpa_supplicant !!!

[Q] (OTA) Software Update error

Hi guys, previously when I tried to check Settings -> About Device -> Software Update -> Update
I can get a message "No Updates Available".
But NOW, Everytime I tried to check for updates I'm getting always the error message below
"Failed to update firmware due to network or server problem. Try software update via Settings > Software update> Update, or try using PC Kies"
I'm pretty sure I have a good internet connection because anything online can load with no problem..
Why am I getting that error?
Dunno but heed the power of the s3 and do what it says....connect to kies lol

Thanks mate for your help. Im frustrated because I did not do anything to my phone to make this happen. I'm not even rooted...
From what I remember I just tap Update when my FW was still in LF6. Then after I updated to LFB using kies the problem still persist.
Previously this was still working in LF6, I dont know what really happened, all I can say is that Samsung FW is really buggy... Even the icons inside the folder is sometimes not arranged the way I arranged them... :crying:
FYI guys, this is a known issue for Galaxy S3 AT&T model, heres the link.

Already did that mate and still same problem. This is not only happening using Wifi, but also using Mobile Data (3g, H, H+).
Could this be a server problem? But my friend can connect to the OTA server without problem. The only difference between our S3 is mine is sim unlock and her phone is lock.

do you maybe run an app that tries to connect and turns on WiFi automatically?
You could also try a soft reset of your phone to factory settings
Check settings/Wi-Fi/advanced (menu button) and make sure Wi-Fi timer is off

I did a full reset and it seems to have fixed the problem.
Phone was getting a bit slow anyway so I decided to go for a full wipe.
Were you somehow able to get this fixed? I suddenly had a wifi issue myself. It happened around two weeks ago. I suddenly was not able to connect to my home wifi when I was more than 2 or 3 meter away from my router. I have tried absolutely everything:
1. Tried flashing new modems and kernels.
2. Tried flashing CM11 then wifi fix patch - didn't work. I flashed boeffla kernel - it just made it worse, I could connect when I was near the router but couldn't use the internet - it just showed wifi was connected but with slow or no internet.
3. I tried flashing back to stock rom and even updating with kies but still the same problem.
4. I flashed Android Revolution HD v52. Tried different modems on it. Flashed wifi fix. This still didn't work so I tried boeffla again. No luck.
5. I tried the murata fix through terminal emulator and still didn't fix it.
I don't know what to do anymore.
Can anyone help me, please??
Probably hardware fault.
Would you be willing to downdate your android version?
My SIII has the exact same behaviour as yours.
Wipe everything, clear Dalvik.
Try flashing this stock: I9300XXEMRH_I9300VFREMJ1_I9300BUEMJ1_HOME.tar.md5
You still will have to use the annoying *#0011# thing to psm off every time you reboot.
Yesterday I installed CM11 and was very very happy with it. It's fantastic really. So lightweight.
But wifi only worked to > -50dBm power levels. That is what you are facing right now.
As you know, with CM you can't invoke *# commands.
Before that I've flashed samsung stock 4.3 and the behaviour was exactly the same,
with the additional thing that *#0011# didn't bring wifi up as expected.
Hope this helps in any way.

I never got any wifi problems with that one.

Since there was no reply to last answer I assume there's no interest at
the moment. But maybe this helps someone in trouble in the future.
By reinstalling and changing some options, it was possible to achieve this:
- wifi working with SIII, 4.3, with no need of *#0011# tweak - can leave psm default, on.
- wifi range went back to my previous numbers, that is, 40m away from router behind wall.
Diagnosis:
- when connecting to wifi, SIII get stuck at connecting, possibly with 'authentication error'
- *#0011# psm on/off doesn't solve it
- *#0011# status show no ssid, mac ap 0.0.0.0, and/or weird numbers like power and speed
Process:
- if you have root privileges, clear Dalvik cache from root explorer, if not, just go to next step
- triangle away your custom rom installs
- power off
- power on to recovery
- wipe user data / factory reset
- wipe cache
- install 4.1.2 Netherlands I9300XXEMG6_I9300PHNEMG2_PHN from sam mobile via Odin
- reboot
- let it install all bloatware, login to your google account as usual, register for update
- here it updated ota to 4.3 after 3hours downloading. You could try download a official 4.3 rom directly,
although I did not try this method
- wi-fi options, advanced, make sure 'always allow search' is ticked on (5th option top down)
That option is what makes it work. Why is that is the most interesting thing, and it is, as far as
I understand it, a kernel bug. It costed me 40 hours of googling, home testing, changing all
kinds of security/encryption router configs, wiping and reinstalling ROMs since ICS, and more.
Hope this finds someone else in trouble...

I have the exact same problem. And it drives me crazy.
It all happened when I flashed a newer version of the MoKee 4.4.3 ROM based on CM11.
I am currently using this version:
MK44.2-umts_spyder-140524-RELEASE.zip -> and this is the only newer and stable version without the problem.
Any newer releases since May 31st. have the exact same problem. Everything runs smoothly until I leave the phone for a while, usually 5-10 mins. When I turn the screen on... I get this weird distortion just like you do. And I have to restart my phone with POWER + VOL DOWN key combination.
The ROM releases with this kind of problem are:
MK44.2-umts_spyder-140531-RELEASE.zip
MK44.2-umts_spyder-140604-RELEASE.zip
MK44.3-umts_spyder-140610-RELEASE.zip
I have tried almost every trick I could imagine, I've fiddled with the kernel, tried to turn off power saver, tried to force 2D rendering, force 16bit transparency.. and so on. But the problem still persists.
So, at this very moment I cannot update my ROM with the newer versions because I don't know what is causing the problem.
On my 4.1 stock ROM I had a problem with HDMi being always turned on, due to hardware malfunction of the phone. That is why I switched to rooting and flashing a custom ROM. The HDMi problem was gone... but this might be somehow related. Maybe the newer versions of CM11 for Xt910 have the HDMi service back on. I don't know.
Oh yes, and one more thing. I thought that it was a bug in MoKee, but I flashed a different kind of ROM, the RessurectionRemix from June the 4th and this ROM also has this kind of problem. So, it might be a hardware issue or something is wrong with the newer releases.
I need help on this.
Ok, good to know, i just tried cm11 and everything newer than 05/28 give me that screen.
I also had hdmi always on with stock rom.
Maybe it's related.

So I guess we are both stuck on May releases for now. If you somehow discover any other 4.4.3. ROM without this pixelated screen bug, please post it here. So we could help other people which are having the same problem as we do.
As a matter of fact, it is definitely a problem with the HDMi interface. Because both of us share the same problem. Before my phone was rooted, I was stressed by this HDMi fault on my phone. Every time I restarted my phone, the HDMi was force-turned on upon boot. And my screen was force-rotated. So I had to go to screen settings and activate/re-activate HDMi to get my screen back to normal. After I've rooted my phone I removed the webtop software and my problem with the forced HDMi switching was gone. That was on my 4.1.2 stock ROM.
And when I tried out the MoKee 4.4.2 everything was running perfectly until these June releases which are buggy.
I am aware of the fact that this is probably a hardware fault. But maybe if I flash the newer ROM version and if I try to uninstall the webtop service again... maybe it will work.
I plugged the hdmi on my tv when the white screen appeared and it was working, white screen on the phone, and actual display on the tv. but the phone was very slow, sometimes the white screen disappeared.
I tried to kill some process, but no success.
Maybe there is a commit implemented on these new builds, related to hdmi function
But, don't know much about it, and where to look.

Just wanted to check in and confirm that I gott the same exact problem. Hdmi error on stock, and the white screen on june builds. Staying on may for now. Tried a few different cm roms and the all seem to have the same problem....
Is there not a way to disable the hardware via build.prop for cm11?

Any luck so far? I haven't tried any newer CM11 builds.
Could this be made publicly available?

Hi mate, If you still have the rom downloaded, could you please upload it for us? Its been taken off the MoKee site and cannot seem to find it anywhere else. Would very much appreciate it as this is the only way I can see to get the phone working properly again. Thanks.

Finally, I have discovered a solution to this menacing problem. Here it is folks!
The trick is, you need to install a custom kernel which could disable the HDMi interface by all means. I have downloaded the JBX kernel ver. "JBX-Kernel-3.5-Hybrid-Spyder-4.4_2014-07-08.zip" and flashed it over my LiquidSmooth rom.
The LiquidSmooth build is "LS-KK-v3.1-2014-07-06-umts_spyder.zip" from early July. I used a clean install on the rom (wiped all data on my phone) and then after flashing the rom and the gapps... I flashed the JBX kernel over it. Although, while installing the JBX kernel... you MUST leave the "disable HDMi" option selected. The fault is only with the HDMi interface, so you MUST disable it for things to work properly.
As for the last couple of hours, the rom is running fine and the white pixelated screen is gone. I can't describe the joy I feel after fixing this one.
Spread the word! :good:
Thanks

Thank you, I am trying this and it seems to be working. Cheers.

Is my Galaxy 10.1 Tablet dead forever, or can I bring it back to life?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, 16GB, wifi only version, GT-7510. Bought in the US.
It was running a rooted version of Lollipop for a long time with no problems, and then in the last couple weeks, I started to constantly get pop errors at random times saying, "Unfortunately, Google Play services have stopped." Also, Google Play wouldn't load.
I tried a factory reset, and wiping cache, and that sort of thing, but none of it helped. So, I thought I'd try a new ROM. I saw there was a version of Android 6.0.1 available, so I thought I'd give that a whirl. Here's where everything went wrong. I tried installing the ROM, and it failed. Then I noticed that my version of TWRP might be too old. I had version 2.3 or so, and maybe the ROM I was trying to flash needed a higher version. So, I got the latest TWRP, which version 3, and tried flashing that using Odin from my Windows 10 computer.
And that's when everything died. In the Odin interface, it said "FAIL". Then, after that, I couldn't boot into recovery mode. I tried reflashing, I tried finding stock ROMs, and, after following some advice on the web, I tried flashing a PIT file. Nothing worked.
Currently, the situation is that even though I have it turned off, the screen comes on intermittently and says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue - Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".
I can hold down the volume down and power button and get into download mode (but not recovery). If I go into download mode and try to flash from Odin, I get the following error.
I've attached screenshots of the ODIN output and the error on my Tablet.
I've tried different versions of Odin, I've double checked every file to make sure I've got the right file for my device, I feel like I've done everything I can do.
Is my Galaxy 10.1 permanently bricked? Or is there any way I can pull it back from the brink?

I think you are using Odin the wrong way: On the screenshot I can see that the twrp file is selected under bootloader. I think you should load it with the PDA button instead.
I am certainly not an expert on this subject, but it did work for me that way, after due research on these forums.
FYI, I used this recovery: https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=18426#downloads
I did something similar to mine. It would only go into download mode. I found the exact same firmware on the web that came with the tablet and I used ODIN to flash it and all was good again. Im not expert either but Im pretty sure that you need to use the PDA tab. I would find the original firmware for you model as there are quite a few places online that should have it and then reflash it and then you can start over again.
