Keyboard and Mouse shortcuts/Commands? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone list or link me to a list of keyboard and mouse commands for our tablet?
I have a bluetooth mini keyboard* with a built in mouse and I would like to be able to control my tablet from my couch while it is connected to my TV's HDMI. However, I cannot figure out how to do basic tasks with the keyboard.
* The keyboard is this type:http://compare.ebay.com/like/400254296761?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&_lwgsi=y&cbt=y
Also, I'm not sure if the commands are tablet-specific, Android specific, or if they even exist at all. (I have searched XDA and Google, but because I do not know exactly what keywords to use, I am coming up without answers!)
Shortcuts I mainly need:
1-3) The three icons in the lower left of taskbar (they don't appear through HDMI): Back, Home, and the Prev Apps
4) Change homescreens/swipe left and swipe right (I can long click and move the mouse to do this, but it is difficult to do with my mouse since it is a knob type)
5) Long hold
6) Any other commands... heck, let's make a database if it doesnt exist already!
In case it matters: I am using ICS 4.0.3 stock (with root).

Ok, wait, I kinda figured some things out, but I still need help I think:
1) Back = (correction) RClick for some apps.
2) Prev Apps =
3) Still don't know Home EXACTLY, but while in an app, Right Click seems to exit to Homescreen... but if on a different Homescreen, pressing RClick will not bring you back to your default Screen. RClick does NOT seem to act like Back at all though.
Correction: RClick seems to act as Back in SOME apps.
4) I found that I can change Homescreens two ways:
a) Move mouse to far R/L side and click
b) Use the scrollbar for the mouse (the one used to scroll through webpages, etc); Downward = Left and Upward = Right
If there are any other methods, please list them.
5) Long Hold = Long Click
... *facepalm* I shouldve guessed this one from the start!!!!
6) Still, if anyone can fill in the blanks and list any others, it would be helpful to myself and I am sure many others.

I have a Bluetooth keyboard that I use and pressing the escape button on it seems to act as a universal back button in every app.

Quick hacked up app to create soft menu/back keys - SoftKeys v3.06

SoftKeys provides on screen keys for menu/home/back/search for devices that don't have those keys in hardware.
SoftKeys is also available in the Android Market
If you want to make themes for SoftKeys you will need the tools to build apks (eclipse/android sdk/etc) and the template from the git repository.
http://git.hoopajoo.net
Changelog:
2011/01/11 - 3.06 - Fix notification keys, boot straight to launcher on system startup
2011/01/11 - 3.05 - Fix notification softkeys <b>broken release</b>
2011/01/10 - 3.04 - Adds dpad and up to 6 custom keys, ability to put device
to sleep, improved performance for key injection, built in documentation, bugfixes
2010/12/23 - 3.00 - Most of the layout code has been rewritten to allow for theming, couple of bug fixes, SoftKeys is now gpl3
-----
Old Changelog (I'm too lazy to reorder this newest to oldest):
2010/12/04 - 1.01 - added launcher selector and remembers last launcher
2010/12/04 - 1.02 - added themes layouts from nemith, looks more like his screenshots but the spinner text is still black so the launcher chooser is hard to read, hopefully I'll have some time to fiddle with that soon
2010/12/04 - 1.03 - My fingers are too fat, I made everything in to image buttons and moved the launcher config to a prefs screen, if anyone has nicer icons let me know these are repurposed from generic android icons
2010/12/05 - 1.04 - Added alternate long-press soft home key for secondary launcher like if you want to use the built-in nook home, added configurable options for what to do if you tap or double tap the nook button while in the softkeys screen, long press on menu/back sends an extra back to the app before sending the requested button for apps that bring up pause screens or something when you move them to the background (angry birds, etc)
2010/12/05 - 1.05 - Integrated the dark theme from nemith, you can choose it in prefs now. Added options to disable the "exit" and "configure" buttons. If you disable "configure" you can still get to the preferences using the "menu" button in the notification bar (e.g. the normal menu button)
2010/12/05 - 1.06 - fix broken key handling, menu and back didn't work, don't use 1.05
2010/12/06 - 1.07 - add recent applications to top of the screen since we don't have a long-press-home recent apps dialog, looking in to re-ordering the buttons next
2010/12/07 - 1.08 - This release adds options to re-order the softkeys, insert soft keys in to the notification area, disable the recent apps list, long press the background to configure if you lost the configure button, and some options for changing the background to dim/blurred/none (note: the notification soft keys show up in the notification area, not in the main status bar like the nook menu/back, I can't put things there as an application you would need to modify system jars to get this effect)
2010/12/07 - v1.09 - Default to non-blurred background and added note about slowness, added option to return to softkeys after pressing back button
2010/12/08 - v1.10 - Selecting "SoftKeys" for your single-press home action will make it so if you launch softkeys, it will go to the launcher unless you hit home again, e.g. single-press home to go to launcher anywhere, double-press home to go to softkeys
2010/12/13 - v2.00 - This adds a new service overlay that is displayed above all apps allowing softkeys to be sent without having to mess with the home button. Default home key behavior has changed to be single click home from anywhere goes to your default launcher, double click home to get to the old softkeys interface. I'm still fiddling with service panel layouts and ideas so things will probably change, I just wanted to get some testing with something simple.
2010/12/17 - v2.01 - The service panel can now be dragged around the screen, you can change it from horizontal to vertial by long pressing it, you can adjust the transparency of the panel and the icon size, and also control if it closes after sending key events. If you don't want the dialog background on the panel you can disable it to just have floating buttons. NOTE: the signing certificate has changed to a release cert, you will need to uninstall the old softkeys before installing this one
2010/12/17 - v2.02 - Now you can move the button that brings up softkeys service, slightly better handling for switching horizontal/vertical layout by long press
veeerrry nice man!
Thanks! I agree with you - I didn't want to permanently re-assign the volume buttons, as I use them in some apps.
One request, if possible ) - Is there any way to make it go to launcher pro (or whatever you want as default) when pressing "Home" in the app? Right now, it asks me to "Pick Home" every time.

I never personally use the "home" button, I use the quick drawer thing in the notification bar, so I don't really use a launcher. I could probably quickly add a button just for an alternate home or use last home I guess/choose new home I guess. I'll see what I can do. I've also though about adding arrow soft keys, for using in like connectbot, is there any interest in that?
There are also other minor irritating things, like apps that exit when they are not in focus will not work with this hack. For example, monkey kick (a game my son loves to play) will exit if it's not in focus so it never receives the soft keys. I suppose it doesn't matter though since it doesn't use the screen completely anyway, so he just gets to play on my old g1

Thanks again. Using the last home would be great, if that's possible. I don't personally have any use for additional buttons, but maybe someone else can comment? Rgds.
Awesome.
Code would be cool it would be nice to have them popup at the bottom of the screen like when you press the menu button in an app.
Also to take a screen shot you hold the 'n' button and tap the Vol - button. If you have as much trouble as I did with this method, you can also install drocap2 (root required) which does nice job.
awesome app. its perfect! great replacement until someone does the sidebar buttons like the ones available for the archos
nice work... now if you can make this pop up on the bottom of the screen with a black background like the archos tablets it would be awesome...
thank you, this is a great work around
I put the source up at
http: // git.hoopajoo.net
(take out the spaces I can't post links apparently)
That page has a list of my public git urls available, the last one is SoftKeys
if anyone wants to check it out, I'm currently looking at remembering the last launcher picked and defaulting to that for people that use launchers.
-- the rest of this is just for people looking in to the source, to provide some background to why I did it this way and alternate ideas I had --
If any devs look at it I thought I'd post some of my reasons for doing it this way:
1) I looked at creating a custom init service bound to a keycode at first, this would have made it so you didn't need superuser but would have required modifying your ramdisk. Even just making a daemon and communicating through some kind of pipe would require modifying the ramdisk to get it in init. In the end I abandoned the idea because it seemed easier for most normal people to just install an apk.
2) I looked at binding this to the camera button and remapping it in the keylayout, that would preserve the default home screen selections, but would require modifying a file in your /system/ so people would need to adb their stuff. Again I thought an apk would be easier and adding in shell commands would just complicate things for people and I'm not very good at support
3) I spent a LOT of time looking through git repos from aosp to find out if there was some way to bind to the long-press home and take over the recent apps list, since it doesn't even work. This would preserve your home settings and not even remove an existing function. After several hours grepping through the core.git stuff I decided this was just easier to do. If figured good enough is usually good enough. Though if someone can figure this out it would be sweet.
4) I really was hoping that we could just pull whatever archos is doing since that seems ideal, completely soft buttons. However after downloading the aos firmware I found it was encrypted and apparently currently can only be decrypted by the devices using the public key stored on them somewhere and I'm not aware of anyone having dumped their system images yet.
Also I've been looking through the superuser source to see how they handle the popups, they do a good job of not killing the running app and being all around unobtrusive, doing it their way for the popup buttons would be really sweet since it never seems to break the currently running app.
Great except one thing!
I have LauncherPro so when I click the home button, it always gives me a choice between LauncherPro and the original home. Can you make it so I can set a default? I want to just go straight to launcher pro then I select home.

The thread is one page long and your question was already discussed.
One page was too much reading?
How about double click home button for menu and hold the button for back? Just my 2 cents.
I have taken the source code and modified it to a be a row across the bottom of the screen, I think this looks a little bit better
Note the bar at the bottom of both. Ignore that ghosting on the second image.
If anyone is good at graphics I can use some images to create a fancier looking bottom bar.

I am going to play to play with doing stuff like this. For example. Press Home for the menu. Press Home again to make the meny disappear. Double tap home for menu. Long Press for back.
I think next on my plate is setting a default launcher application to use when you hit the soft Home button.
Here is the github respository for anyone interested: https://github.com/bennetb01/SoftKeys
I can't get this to install. The first one instaled fine but when I kick this off it says it will replace the first version then "application not installed" should I remove the first one manually?
Great work BTW. Thanks

You can uninstall the first one via the following:
Code:
adb uninstall net.hoopajoo.android.SoftKeys
Install the second one normally via:
Code:
adb install SoftKeys.apk
Interestingly enough the adb uninstall command resulted in a failure as well. I just uninstalled via long press at my app screen and was able to install via root explorer on the nook.
Thanks for the help though.
I do like those buttons, I'm not much for making things look nice, typically I just do back end stuff. If you want to rebase against head and post your git repo I'll merge those changes in to main.
I started using launcher pro and realized it does suck way too much to have to select your launcher every time. It's just 1 button press but I'm too lazy.
And for people re-installing, from adb you have to do:
adb install -r <APK>
Also to remove packages I use appremover, or you can use astro file manager with the package manager under the menu.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this piece of information, so this looks like a good place to discuss it. My wife noticed that you can always access the back button by swiping from right to left across the notification toolbar. This worked on her non-root NC as well as my rooted one. Pretty cool!

Scrolling in browser fields

I am afraid I already know the answer to this but hopefully there is a way. I was doing some stuff on the web and one of the pages was a registration form. The field for state was a dropdown box. The list item I needed was at the bottom so I needed to scroll down the list but there was no way to do so. Is there a way to do this?
Have u tried the dpad on the keyboard? Just a thought idk if that works just haven't run into that issue yet
I can't get the keyboard to come up. Once I leave the field for City, the keyboard goes away.

Long press on the menu button always brings the keyboard back...
.
On all Android devices, there are long press shortcuts and key-combination shortcuts.
There are the actual Android shortcuts, and some vendors such as Archos install their own.
I have never found any vendor that gives a full description of their devices shortcuts so I always either search Google (in the case of key-combination shortcuts) for any, other users have found, and long press every button on my device (front and keyboard in all applications...) to find out whats there.
Still working on this new device but seems to be limited to basic Android at mo.
I tried the long press. Maybe it is that web page's design. I have found that long pressing only lets you get to the keyboard in apps that require some kind of typing input. When I long press on that field, the keyboard never comes up.

Yeah, there are plenty of places where long press does not work.

Prime Keyboard - I useful tip; several "Concerns"

Since the Keyboard Dock is the major difference between the Prime and ALL other tablets (there are keyboards out there, and there are docks out there, but other than the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet (Nice! Still a Tegra 2 Device though) there's no other tablets offering the slick KB/Battery/Dock combination that looks and works like this.
Ahh, my first slip. The "works" comment needs to be examined. How many of you find navigating with the keyboard a bit inconsistent, sometimes difficult, and see the cursor move to the top left (to the first cursor position in the block) when typing in web text boxes - like when replying on XDA forums.
I know to turn off the touchpad using the hardware toggle top row 4th key from left. That does not change the cursor jump thing however. I have checked and tried to determine if I am inadvertently striking a key, or even touching the screen perhaps, but I do not see that being the case
Additionally selecting, cutting, copying, pasting are all inconsistent at best, and non functional in some scenarios. Example: I select some text by touching the screen on the text, then dragging slightly right or left. This will generally work, the text gets highlighted, and 2 drag points are provided. Using these, I define what the start and end points are, and select copy for example. Great, then I select an insertion point via tap and hold a second. A "Paste" button pops up by my finger, and tap that. GREAT! I just completed copy paste 101! Now, I go to do it again. Not so good. I try to select text, but all I can get is an insertion point for pasting, and no matter what I try, that's all I can do.
I realize this smacks of user error, and I am perfectly willing to admit I am possibly being a retard. If that's the case, can someone tell me how to clear the mode, and be able to select text again? I have tried what would make sense on a PC; hitting escape when it is trying to paste instead of selecting. NG.
What truly puzzles me (more than the right click = "back" bit of Android weirdness) is that I can select text like I am used to by holding shift, and using the cursor arrow keys to highlight any block of text, but once selected, STILL have to tap/hold to do anything with it. And even THAT seems limited to cut/copy or backspace to delete. Further, it is also subject to the "stuck in paste" mode I described above. I am not a touch typist, more of a "fast & furious" two finger guy, perhaps 50wpm, which is not bad but the limitation is I must look at the keyboard about 75% of the time. Then I look and see the errors, and fight with text select/cut/copy/paste all over again.
I am interested to see others take on the keyboard and these Asus/Android text issues. I would like to assemble a set of documentation that explains the behavior, the known issues and/or the workarounds or resolutions, a complete Keyboard Shortcut List (The one I attached is very good but far from perfect)
Finally here's a great tip: I am sure most have noticed the glaring absence of a true "Delete" key. All we have is a Backspace key, which is good HALF of the time, LOL. When you need to delete text to the RIGHT of the cursor you are SOL. TIP: Try this: SHIFT + BACKSPACE = DELETE
I just searched on this, knowing that I am not likely to be the first to discover this (I am not, Tips show up of OG Transformer.) Anyway, I am at least passing on the discovery for others to benefit. Also, don't forget to change the software keyboard to ASUS when using the dock KB.
I haven't used my dock much, but the other day while writing an email, the cursor jumped as you described. I thought I'd just brushed up against the touchpad, so I disabled it, finished writing my email and sent it.
I was assuming that was what the issue had been, and I haven't really used the dock since, so I haven't had a chance to see the problem happen again... I would suspect that if the cursor still jumps for you there's some sort of bug though (and I will still see the cursor jump as well.)
I'll play around with it and report my findings.
I have found as you mentioned if you do not disable the mouse pad you will be plagued with typing issues. I noticed that when the touchpad is on if my wrists hit the aluminum within a 1/8th of an inch of the touchpad it still caused the issues but with the touch screen I have 0 use for the mouse so its always disabled.

I was curious about this warning when I first plugged in my dock. What exactly is the difference? I've had my KB set to Thumb Keyboard the whole time and haven't noticed any problems. What's to be gained from using ASUS?
I'm curious too... to be honest I'm not sure what mine is set to, but it's whatever it defaulted to (I haven't checked it or changed it.)
By the way, I tested my dock with the touchpad disabled, and experienced no jumping cursors. I wrote quite a lenthgy, babbling test email to myself, and everything went totally as it should.

I think I understand what you are explaining and what our frustrations are. And most of them are with the select/copy/paste function. Please be aware that this function changes depending on where you are/what program/app you are using. It is not always the dock's "fault". It's the same way if you were just using the tablet. I think the best example is if you are trying to cut/paste/select in an email (gmail, whatever) versus doing the same thing typing in a text or a polaris document or a google search item. Some apps and programs give you different functions (if I understand it correctly) - I say this because I see this difference on my phone, not just with the Prime and dock. Not with everything, but with many things.
Does that make sense? I get frustrated with it too because it is inconsistent.
One thing that HAS driven me mad is caps lock!! ever notice it get stuck on? Shift, caps lock, shift, escape....I can't get it unlocked until I just randomly peck away at each and it stops
I don't have any of these issues and I never disable the track pad, I love this keyboard its perfect for note taking in class and emails. As for the copy/paste I haven't tried that too much yet, its easy enough to select text.

I originally would leave the keyboard set to the swift keyboard with the dock attached thinking it just worked the same but I eventually noticed errors. Seems to be program specific in that these errors could be repeated in certain programs and not others. Been a while now since I gave up using swift with the dock so I don't remember specifics but it was something like it worked just fine for most programs but in one program the T button would produce the wrong letter but everything else was fine or in another program the I button would not produce any letter but the rest of the keyboard would work. When using splashtop on for my desktop it was even more erratic where individual programs on the computer would react differently to the keyboard input and some in a very severe way. I thought it was an issue with splashtop until I switched to Asus keyboard with the dock and all the aforementioned problems went away... and then I learned that many keyboard shortcuts work with Asus keyboard like a regular computer so I just make sure and make the switch when I connect to the dock.
Oh, and I have to disable the touchpad. Mouse pointer and input jumps all over the place if I type with a that enabled.

Love it! Here's another one:
ALT + Tab = Recent Apps List
That jumping to the first line is the only thing that annoys me sometimes. Everything else is perfect. We are all used to operate a windows machine with our keyboards. So this is a slightly different experience.
I found it works best if embrace the touchscreen even with dock attached. We are all still learning how to use our primes the most efficient way.
I have the Backspace key stop working quite often. Sometimes it starts working again after i press "Shift" (regardless of caps lock being on or off). Does this happen to anyone else?
If your having problems copying, tap where you want to begin a copy, hold shift and press a cursor key in the direction you want to copy, then ctrl + c, ctrl + v.
You can also use home and end to copy large amounts of text.
Well, I use my Prime at the uni, at mostly with the dock (much much much faster to write stuff). I find it perfect, honestly! Very useful and comfortable (ok, the first day is was kind of strange, but with training everything is alright).
The standard ctrl-c (copy), ctrl-x (cut), and ctrl-v (paste) shortcuts work on highlighted text. So, that avoids the need to long-press the selected text to act on it.

This ^^^
I never use the screen for copy/paste, I've always hated trying to select very specific text with touchscreens.
And I have not noticed this fail to work in any of my apps.
Now if only we could get some ctrl+z and ctrl+y (undo/redo) in Android altogether. Especially because I also do notice the cursor jump at times when my track-pad is most definitely off, and I get tired of actually having to remember what the hell was flowing from my head to my fingers a couple of seconds ago
Didn't want to start a new thread or anything, and this is the first one on keyboards I've seen for 4 pages so here it is lol
A screw has promptly left its place in the dock. I haven't noticed the dock itself start to pull apart or anything, I generally still hold it by the screen or right underneath the hinge, but this sucks haha I Don't know how I could tighten it back in myself (don't have any drivers that're going to work that angle) and certainly don't want to go shipping it off.
But just so it's out there, so people know to watch out and not lose the screw. I was having trouble docking, so I looked and there it was

Its good if you wanna open a something in a new page but dont want to press the buttons every time.

[Q] Using mouse with right click under android

Hello everybody,
I have an Iconia A500, running with Jelly Bean / rooted, Cyanogenmod 4.1.2 from Randomblame.
So far so good. As most of you know, this device supports bluetooth mice and USB mice. I am using both kinds of mice quite often for working in office tools or for the good old ScummVM games.
Now to my question. Every mouse I use only has the left click function. Right click does the same as left click. Is there a possibility to configure the right button? In Office I would like to get the "long press" instead, in the ScummVM Games I would like to get the "default action", wich is highlighted on touch.
I dont mind if I can configure directly in Android or if I have to use an app. I would be glad for any idea which could help.
Thank you!
I don't think you can get right click of the mouse on the phone, because if you connect the mouse your clicks (any button) simply translates into "touches". As "left" and "right" is not something about "touching" the screen. I tested this on Nexus 7 (where you just plug mouse and get black mouse cursor visible on the screen) -- no one app didn't react on "right click" or "mouse over" (no a button to highlight). You can click and drag - that is ok and no problems. You can mimic any touch action, but i didn't notice event implementation for mouse specific staff.

Hey,
thank You already. For my Iconia it's the same. Just plug in the USB Adapter or connect the Bluetooth device and it's running with this black arrow. But theoretically it should be possible to get different actions by different buttons. The mice are sending the signals for right and left button (Windows PC detects it). Only Android is just configured to understand them all as "left" (In previous Android Versions the right button often was configured to "back").
What I need is something, which defines my right button as long press or something else - similar to the Logitech Setpoint software for PC (There you also can set shortcuts, Keyboard Combinations or whatever for nearly every button). I am sure, I am not the first one thinking about this, so isn't there any app/driver/trick to get this working?
I guess i can't give you concrete answer or tip here.
I am only wonder if they had support for all mouse stuff in previous Androids, why they decided to remove it from 4.1
...
technically I think it is possible that right click work under some kernels the version before last of es explorer used to work with right click like in windows but now does not... I have a XOOM runnig team eos 3 stable release
Plenty of Remote Desktop software can "decode" right click so obviously right click and left click are registered differently from android but as android lacks "right-click functionality" (it) replaces both as a left click (touch) trigger. The trick would be to replace "long touch" for right click.
To those who have bought (for example) a Note 12.2 tablet for samsung, plugging in a mouse and using "Hancomm office" would turn the tablet into an ideal laptop. After all it's big enough and now that the software is pouring in I see no reason why should Google (or at least a ... hack) won't give us proper right click. Long click is tedious for any serious consideration...
In Android every app has a menu, some devices like the Galaxy S3/4 have a hardware menu button, hitting right button could emulate the hardware menu button (it does have a specific key code, it can be opened from keyboard), or it could be used as a back like on old versions of Android (makes sense, you "enter" with left and "go back" with right), or it could easily emulate a "reasonably long" click (2.1 secs) or any keypress. The only thing that does not have *ANY* sense is making it equal to the left button like on recent Android. That's already there, no value added. If only someone could make an App to configure that choice...
Samsung Roms
I was using Samsung Roms before where when the bt mouse was connected the right button was acutaly define with "Back" and the middle mouse or mouse wheel was getting me "home".
However when I swiched to CM 12.1 the feature was not there, but as you describe left and right mouse are doing the same and mouse wheel is activating the search menu.
I haven't found any settings for that.
But I would be interested in any input on that regard.
Cheers

Samsung keyboard vs. Logitech PRO

Hello, I read that many people like the Logitech PRO keyboard. It seems to be a bit heavy. Generally speaking, which is better? The official samsung keyboard or the Logitech PRO keyboard?
Depends on your use. I prefer the Samsung one, much thinner. The logitech makes the whole package too thick.
On the other hand the Logitech has the better keyboard and offers better protection for bothe the front and back.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Thanks. Do both of them have automatic on/off, copy and paste keys?
The Logitech Pro definitely makes the entire package more book-like, and it also only has one angle setting AND it does not support portrait mode. Those are the only knocks against it, though. I love the keyboard. I use my Note PRO 12.2 for work and having a keyboard every bit as good as a laptop's is the critical feature for me.
The only thing I'm struggling with is trying to remap the hotkeys to my preferred apps. I want the internet key to launch Habit Browser not stock browser, for example. I know it's doable but I haven't had time to really grapple with it.
Hello, unfortunately my options for keyboards are limited. The Logitech PRO is not available in my city.
This is my first tablet. How useful it is to have Android keys on the keyboard? There are two main types:
1) Android specific keyboards such as:
a) Samsung Galaxy Bluetooth keyboard (0.8lb)
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/BKB-10USWEGXAR
b) Samsung Compact Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard(not sure if the spec is correct 0.96lb)
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/pcs-accessories/AA-SK7PWBB/US
I tried this one. It is very light but the keys are a bit too close. Easy to make mistakes.
2) Android compatible keyboards such as:
Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/bluetooth-illuminated-keyboard-k810?crid=26
I tried it today. Not sure about the weight compared with the Samsung's but the keys are very comfortable to type.
I am trying to choose between these three. Any suggestion?
Hello,
Which of the following two Samsung keyboard is comfortable to type and lightweight?
1. Samsung Galaxy Bluetooth Keyboard EE-BT550
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EE-BT550UBEGUJ
2. Samsung Galaxy Bluetooth Keyboard BKB-10USWEGXAR
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/BKB-10USWEGXAR
I tried the NotePRO 12.2 Keyboard Cover with keyboard. Although it is light, it is not comfortable to type on due to the long raised strip from the ctrl key to the end arrow key. See the photo:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EE-CP905UWEGUJ
Does the Logitech PRO keyboard has this problem? Too bad they don't make a white version. My device is in white color.
The Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 is very comfortable to type on but heavier to carry than the above mentioned Samsung keyboards.
Thanks.
As a writer, I've been using the samsung bkb10 bt kb and love it. It's light, fast, with great tactile feel, and it has a number of hot keys for the note pro 12.2. It's white and I use it with the great samsung s action mouse. My black 32 gb tab is in a black moko slim case. I didn't want a permanent case-kb like the logitech. I can fit my tab, kb and mouse in a bag a little over an inch thick. Together, the case, kb and mouse cost me $65.00. It's a great set up.

I too am a writer and I'm trying to get by with the Logitech Pro. I opted against the Samsung keyboard because of its raised edges on the lower corners. So far it's a mixed bag. It's just fast enough for me, comfortable and quiet. However, it doesn't put the device to sleep when you close it, doesn't have an obvious (or possibly any) way to reassign macro buttons and the browser macro button always asks you to choose the browser you want if you have more than one installed.

You can try External Keyboard Helper Pro for that
Spere, do you say that because you've found it to work? Frankly, I grabbed the demo and am entirely confused by it. I don't see anything about how to reassign buttons. I tried to scan the keyboard scan code but it doesn't work. Instead of providing a scan code it just loads the app Logitech assigned. Makes me think it's hard-coded.

I said it as an idea. I use that app with my old Logitech keyboard. If buttons seems to be hard coded, don't know would shortcut be changeable if you somehow find key codes for those button? I can also try it tomorrow..
For what it's worth, I spoke to Logitech support today and they essentially were useless. They said this keyboard has hard-coded application keys that cannot be changed and that the browser bug isn't a bug. The old, it's a feature! You get to pick which browser you want every single time you hit the button.
Does Samsung Keyboard support Arabic?
hi,
just a quick question, does any of both Samsung Keyboards support Arabic? or can be added in any way?
Thanks

Here's my question: Have you tried this yourself or just basing this on common knowledge? Why do I ask? Because, at least for me and on every Note Pro I've tried with that keyboard (took it to the store to try a few units) that doesn't work.
One of the main bugs of the keyboard is that when you hit the Browser macro button, it doesn't matter what browser is set as the default. It's going to pop up a dialog box asking you to choose the default. No matter what you hit next (Always or Just Once) it will ask again and again and again. It's actually in your best interest to say Just Once. Why? Because wasting your time by saying Always will just cause another box to pop up telling you how to clear the default setting later if you don't want that. Saying Just Once at least skips that step.
I'd be curious to see what would happen if you only have one browser installed but both "Internet" and "Chrome" come preinstalled on the device so there's no testing that unless you root and freeze one of them. I haven't had the need to root yet so I haven't.

If I'm right, you don't need to have root to freeze Chrome
Go settings - general - applications - all - find Chrome from list and choose it - select Turn Off
I don't have my NP with me right now, so I'm not sure if that path is correct, but you'll find it

Thanks for that. It actually helped gain more insight into the problem but doesn't actually provide a solution.
So, turning off Chrome allows the Browser key to work without annoyance. The only problem is, it only works for the default Browser called "Internet". There is no way to turn off that browser.
It got me wondering about the other keys. I want my own calendar app to launch but turning off the default calendar seems risky.
I have the Logitech keyboard and I really like it. I was worried about the extra weight and thickness but I'm glad I went with this one. It feels more like an actual notebook in terms of utility because it's easier to bring it around with me or throw in a bag without it getting damaged.
There are a couple issues that I did have which may not be specific to this keyboard. One was that when you hit space while still holding down shift it does not insert a space and instead displays the current language which is super annoying (apparently I hit space before releasing shift A LOT). You can fix this by simply changing to a different virtual keyboard app (eg: the default google keyboard or swiftkey). The other issue I had is that the back button is in the position where you normally have escape key but it doesn't always seem to function the same as escape would. I think it is actually a different key code. I fixed that by remapping caps lock to escape (so now I have no caps lock but I never use that anyways).
Has anyone got the F1-F12 function keys to work with this? So far when I hit FN+MACRO it will just open the browser or calendar or whatever.. I was hoping this wouldn't be the case.
The ZAGG keyboard and Samsung keyboard has blue F1-F12 keys on them, so I was hoping this one would function that way also.. It's really annoying when using remote desktop.
So far I haven't been able to find any way to remap the keys on this thing..
I'm really hoping some more keyboard options emerge for this tablet..
I'm afraid we're all pretty screwed with this tablet with regard to keyboards. The Samsung keyboard is fully functional but doesn't hold the tablet. It just sits in a slot in the keyboard so it's unstable when sitting in bed, etc. The Zagg is very low quality and this one is the best of the lot but has a number of seemingly permanent problems that Logitech appears to have zero interest in addressing. I used to have some pull over there years ago but now my e-mail to upper management didn't even get a reply.
