Nook Touch With Glow back removal. - Nook Touch Accessories

I would like to swap the factory 2Gb HD in my Nook Touch with Glowlight. To do this, I realize that I must first open up the device. I must take off the back cover. Do I need a special tool for this?
My credentials:
I've been searching all day for any information on this, even remotely similar.
This would fall under battery replacement, FYI.
Rooting forums are not opening the nook anymore to get to the Nook Software.
Yes I have been rooting Nooks since they first came out.
I don't plan on rooting this device, just upgrading the HD.
I plan on using Linux and doing a "dd to nook.iso" (if you don't understand that, you probably can't help me.)
I don't need any help with the software side, just removing the plastic back without breaking it.
Thank you to anyone who can help me.

I don't think it would work this way. Probably those are IC soldered to a board, and pretty much useless to remove it. Ever tried using a larger capacity SD card?

There is no HD inside nook, memory IC is sandisk SDIN5D2 iNAND flash in TFBGA package which is soldered to pcb.
Have you got the skills to desolder/solder this kind of package?

No SD???
There is NO SD card that they put the Android OS on? That is strange since it is exactly 2gb on the Nook Touch Simple with Glow Light.
Haven't they always used Micro SD cards?
Is this a new attempt at trying to stop people from rooting?

Micro SD Card Wont Read

I wonder if anyone can help. I was trying to install TomTom7 this morning, and was copying the maps to my 16gb MicroSD card using a rather cheap card reader.
Something's gone wrong, I can no-longer use the card. At first it was just really, really, really slow to be red.
Then I tried to format it, the HD and my PC both say they can't, maybe it's locked one error said.
Now, I can't get it to read it at all, it pretends it's not there...
What are the chances the cheap reader did this? Is it just a dodgy card? Is there anything that can be done to save it?

Nook shipped with 1.4.1

I've read all the tutorials I can find for downgrading and rooting the nook. Unfortunately the tablet seems to have come with 1.4.1 out of the box. I have 2 Micro SDcards:
Micro SDHC 16 GB Sandisk - Doesn't work
Micro SDHC 8GB Not sure of brand - Doesn't work
The tablet recognizes the sd cards, but it will not boot from the sd card. I can't get acclaim_update.zip to install off of either of these cards. My questions:
1. I have seen some threads say the type amd brand can matter. Does SDHC vs SD or one brand over another prove more reliable?
2. Could the fact that it shipped with 1.4.1 be part of the reason that I can't get it to roll back to 1.4.0?
I really like the tablet, and I really want to root and use it but so far no luck. For some unknown reason I returned a "defective" unit that came with 1.4.0, but could not contact B&N other than to register the tab. I should have kept and rooted that one once I got the wifi resolved, but live and learn...
Any help is appreciated!

Shipping the new tablets with 1.4.1 installed from the factory is probably B&Ns neutron bomb. Not sure if there is a fix for that yet.

Not 100% certain, but from what I've noticed so far, the 1.4.0 downgrade doesn't play nice with HC cards. You might want to try a non-high capacity card, and see if that works...
Sandisk 16GB should be fine

I think something else is wrong here; I have multiple 16GB Sandisk cards (which are one of the best choices), and the downgrade to 1.4.0 has worked multiple times. Try formatting the SDcard using the software that comes with the Nook Tablet, and then copying over acclaim_update.zip and rebooting. You may have to reboot a second time to get it to take.
Further, you are not booting from the SD card; that is not (yet) possible with the Nook Tablet.
Finally, the evidence I have seen is that (unlike with the Nook Color), once you update a device to 1.4.1, 1.4.1 becomes the factory recovery image, so the device is indistinguishable from a new one. I may be wrong on that, however.

You say "seems" not "did". Have you checked the device info to see which version it's running or are you assuming it is because of how it's behaving?
SanDisk works better mostly 2gb no problem. Did you try formatting the sd in the nook first?

I have tried to format the cards both in my pc and in the nook.
It's definitely running 1.4.1, I don't know if it shipped with 1.4.1 definitely but when I also recovered the tablet using the built in recovery and it went to 1.4.1.
I'll try a regular micro SD tomorrow. This would make me sad, I do like the tab otherwise.

if it was shipped with 1.4.1 then not good news for me, hopefully is not. Mine hasn't arrived yet and im from equador lolz but yes try with an old sdcard i've read some cases that getting a sandisk 2 gb - 8gb has worked for them.
Good luck!

Good News
I bought a PNY 8GB SDHC card today. It worked as a magic SD Card. I'm having a bit of a problem getting the N button to work again, but I'm sure I'll figure that out soon. So if my unit shipped with 1.4.1, either there was something on my old cards that prevented it from being used as a Magic SD card or those cards won't work for that purpose. Either way if I can get this bad boy rooted I will be the happiest camper I know!
Thanks all for helping me troubleshoot!

N button is working, 1.4.0 is installed, Magic Sd. card was put somewhere safe, and I'm watching the root tutorials now! Persistence pays off dividends most of the time! Best of luck on yours, mine cost me a few bucks extra but it was worth it in my eyes.
So, here's the rub when formatting your MicroSD from the computer; you must set the option "Allocation unit size" option to "32 kilobytes" and put nothing on the card other than the acclaim_update.zip. If you leave it set at the default allocation or anything other than 32 kb it will not work.

I also have a NEW tablet with 1.4.1
I have a new tablet with the 1.4.1 firmware. I never connected to B&N so I know it came that way out of the box. I had to search for a couple of hours before finding a way to skip the "Out of the Box Experience" and setup without connecting to B&N to register.
Does the fact that I have 1.4.1 installed mean I will not be able to root my tablet?
I should have bought one sooner and avoided this situation. Had I known that some Staples stores have them, I might have gone there for mine instead of ordering from B&N and perhaps getting a REALLY new tablet with the latest firmware.

[Q] No touch for NT

Broke my NT screen & replaced but now touchscreen capability doesn't work. I have been trying to return to stock & go from there but am unable to get that done w/o touch.
I am assuming I didn't get a defective screen but cannot be sure.
Anybody have any suggestions for me?
Thank you!
MIGHT<--------- work

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446987&highlight=cwm
boot into it(remove) and then insert
sd2 which, contains stock zip,or any other rom
flash that sucker
and hope it works
METHOD 2 (might be easier, but results in root and other apps)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488035&highlight=cwm
(methods above uses no screen, only side buttons and the n)
please reply because i am interested to see if this works
I can't boot to an sd card. Tried Method 2 & was not able to boot to the card. Flashed the image to the card, put it in the Nook, powered down 8xs & get the blue menu but then can't get the zip image to work.
Sorry, I am a noob in may respects & I'm really foundering here. In method 1 I don't even know how to make a new MSDOS partition table and add a 50 MB FAT32 partition as the first primary partition.
I fear I am up the proverbial creek!
interesting...
method one 50 mb http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
why can you not boot from SD
and
by blue menu do you mean the clock works mod
and what do you mean by 'can't get the zip image to work.' what is happeneing
concern:
well you said that it was a hardware screen damage
so TECHNICALLY the software should work as created since that was 'untouched'
thinking...
Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you; I’ve had company & no time to address this again.
I will try & explain the steps I have taken, although, as I have explained my tech speak is limited at best.
I am using a 2gb sd card (believe it or not I snapped my 32gb card in half while replacing the screen)
I just now tried to use method 1. I thought I followed the instructions exactly found at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
but now my computer doesn't detect the sd card at all, nothing when I plug & unplug the card.
Previously when I said 'get the blue menu' yes, I mean clock works mod.
I think somehow during the use of Partition Wizard 7 the card reader on my comp was fried. I bought a brand new 16gb card; when inserted in the adapter, then into the onboard reader, PW7 shows both cards as 'bad disk'
woah woah woah...well first i was 'gone' for a couple of days due to freshman finals. (dont be like...well this young foo aint going to help...cuz i try to)
second--> the chip could not have gotten fried...check if it works with the native software (windows explorer) and with other SD cards
and how is it one snaps the 32gb sd. like you forgot it inside the device...or while taking it out it 'broke'
back to my third post---> and what do you mean by 'can't get the zip image to work.' what is happening
like is it an md5 sum error or...
obviously this is a very technically problematic because by now...other devs would be helping...
Finally figured out sd card reader on my comp quit working - card's okay in different comp. Snapped the 32gb card when removing the back of the NT. (My bad-forgot it was in the tablet & removing back with card in snaps the card in 2)
Finally got the NT returned to stock (Kudos to Ray Waldo.com)
Now I have working stock NT but still no touch capabilities. My best guess is that the touch digitizer of the screen is bad & since warranty was for 30 days seller won't exchange. (It has been 40 days) Seller is not appreciative of the fact that I have been trying to get this thing working & I too was on vacation.
So unless someone has another idea of what might be wrong, I'm up a creep.
I really appreciate your efforts & the help I have received.
From my reading the touch part is not sold with the LCD display. I assume you purchase the digitizing touch part too.
"7" Nook TABLET IPS LCD Screen Display Repair Replacement. This item is the exactly inner IPS LCD screen dispaly (without Touch screen digitizer glass) for Nook TABLET , easy to change, plug into the board, ....."
Most manufactures have internal diagnostics, can you somehow run these? Who ever your vendor was they should be able to get you the manufactures information. If nothing else you may be able to send it to them for testing.
I did take two laptops apart to combine them into one working one, lots of thin flat cables that went directly into connectors. I did observe that some held well, some did not insert fully and some did not stay in very well. Could you problem be a loose cable?

[Q] Can an unrooted dell streak 5 just die and brick itself?

i recently got a streak 5 unit. its got a stock rom (olleh) and nothing has been modified yet for this unit. in fact it is still locked to at&t and i was still planning on having it unlocked by a professional. the wifi worked so i use it in order to have a 'feel' for the unit. now the other day it just froze up and the power button to shut it down won't respond so i did the next logical thing to do by simply removing the battery and putting it back. unfortunately nothing happened and it won't even charge nor lights lit up for any indications. i already did some time researching and did the fastboot short-cuts, etc, etc.. up to trying to get 3 computers to detect but to no avail. there are claims that this unit is 'unbrickable' by itself but made me really doubt about the claims and as to why dell itself stop its support. i'm guessing that maybe dell cannot replace so many busted units that they too had to give up or lose more money but that is their issue, right? now going back to the problem: i already borrowed a cable and a battery and both are working using a different unit. its just this one that simply refused to be charged nor power up using a different fully-charged battery. i still won't be giving up, not yet. so back to my main question: would it simply just die or conked out?
The problem is the internal card, if you replace the card the dell is going to start and rebuild everything. I help a friend of mine with a death streak, not responding. Replace the internal card and it was like new.

i really appreciate the reply. currently i do not have any spare 16gb card with me nor the unit, i set it aside for a moment with both the battery and external card removed and was planning to continue to thinker with it as soon as i get over the frustration (he-he!). this i haven't tried yet about replacing the card. would a 2gb card do for the moment? should i reformat it first using a pc? i never thought the unit would be 'boot-dependent' on its external card. i already did tried to boot the said unit without its stock 16gb external card to no avail. i shall try this when i get back home and keep you posted of the development.
hmm... you really missed what the guy said... it is internal card... the card is inside the streak where you need to open the housing of the hardware itself, not just the back cover.. see here...
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Dell-Streak-Teardown/3512/1
good luck on doing it... while you on it, try to get a class 10 microsd card... though you might not see much the improvement of speed but it is there... get a 8gb card or below for max compatibility and detection... anything above 8gb usually needs some extra steps to make it run properly...
so what you have been talking about for external card doesnt have any impact to the streak at all since it is external card.. but internal card does...
i will stop here... any further possible question usually already being answered here on this forum... search for it...

yeah, in my early excitement i did missed to notice that he mentioned internal, not external. it's alright, no further questions for me. i've been on board since 2009 and usually i just quitely search for answers for windows mobile units, not android. i just brought out my old htc tytn ii and restored it back to wm 6.1 with my favorite bloat-free applications. i will just hold back until the first few months next year before i purchase a new unit but definitely a non-dell product. i also appreciate the 'take-down' links. in return i might send you a link where you can watch me blow up the dell streak 5 with a powerful firecracker during the upcoming end-of-the-year celebration. i'll make sure that no one will be troubled by its parts should it would be used somewhere. my lousy experience with a dell unit ends with me..

i disassembled my unit (it was relatively easy after all) and tried to replace its internal memory to no avail.
this just happened 10 minutes ago. a slightly critic friend of mine whose got a same unit earlier tried to disclaim what i did before my unit died (i did nothing remember?). anyways, he demonstrated that even by removing the back cover a few times won't brick the streak 5. which he did and as of typing time, he could not charge nor boot his unit anymore. after witnessing the unfortunate event i really am stumped even more.

hmm, already did that. besides it won't do much good if the unit won't even power up (normal, fastboot, etc..)
QDL mode actually doesn't boot your device, it activates a small modem-like fw.
To check -
Remove battery, hold volume up, connect Streak to PC, holding the volume up.
If any new device if shown in computer management, there's a chance to restore device.

"SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" hardware issue solved

Hey all,
I thought I would share my findings to help others with the same issue.
Two days ago I kept catching glimpses of a card image in the notifications at the top of the screen, but it would only be for a second so I could not see what it was trying to tell me. But had a quick look and sd card seemed fine and all data was present on handset. A couple of hours later it popped up with "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed". I tried ejecting and reinserting, restarting device and turning off and removing battery all to no avail. So I did a quick search which showed this seemed to be quite a common issue, after reading many threads with people saying the sd card is corrupt or network providers saying it was software and to do a restore. I decided before all that hassle I would open the phone and check the circuitboard expecting it to be a dry solder joint. One thing I will point out that was different to some other users is the fact my sd card was not visible with the phone connected to the computer, so this may not solve all related issues.
THE FIX
Turn off phone, remove the battery, SIM card and sd card. Remove all screws except the one by the 3.5mm jack. Gently pull the white plastic trim that surrounds the card holders and battery but the top part with speaker and camera does not need removing. Once removed if you look to the left of the sd card holder you will see the ribbon that connects the sd card to the main circuit board and at the end of the ribbon is the connector. Mine was disconnected and was loose, even if yours is not loose it would be worth gently pulling it off and reconnecting it. Then reassemble in the reverse order.
This was a nice surprise in the sense it was a very simple fix. However when I mounted the sd card even directly in my pc it was not found, I assume that the loose connector floating about had probably shorted its connections and caused an issue with the sd card. After a handfuls of attempts at mounting it in my pc it was finally detected and I backed up all the data and reformatted the sd card, then copied the data back, mounted it in my phone and was happy to find it all working as expected.
I hope this information will help some of you out, as it was a simple fix to a simple issue and results from searching had no solutions, just lots of assumptions.
And what can I do
Hi
I read your articles and seem very good but u have a question.
I had the same issue and I saw that every time my phone said I hat message it creates in my sd card a folder named lost. I and then i saw that one part of my battery was going there, ti reconnect the phone with my sd card
I formatted my sd card and did all the things that I found in the Internetbut nnothing works and I just change my sd for another one I had and sincethere u ddon't have any other issue, but my computer detects very good my first sd card and I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any idea?
Regards
Recently ive just faced this issue, what I did is to insert my 32gb sd card in my PC and run CHKDISK, havent got any error while performing this, thereafter i inserted it in my phone & goodness till now this sd card error hasn't appear yet. (finger crossed).
Mine did something like this a few times and then the 32GB Sandisk class 10 card died. Couldn't get it to work in any device except Linux based Media player. Luckily managed to copy my nadroid backup and TB backup. Sent to Sandisk and they replaced it. There is already a thread about S3 damaging teh SD cards. May be the loose connection is what's causing the card to to end up dead.

Yeah,as mentioned I have seen a lot of issues about sd cards, this is the first issue I have had and thought it would be worth mentioning. There is little space when the case is together so it could easily still make contact and seem fine even if the connector has worked loose and cause all kinds of issues. As mentioned mine had the sd icon popping up every now and then before it actually failed. Some users seem to be going through a lot of sd cards with them failing on a regular bassis.
I've been using my 32gb card since my last phone which was the LG Optimus 3D it is a scandisk class 10 one. Anyway i took it out of the 3D and stuck it into my S3 i still have not had a problem. I did take it out a few times to put a rom in because i wiped my phone and didn't have a rom in the Sd card. Also i dropped my phone and replaced the whole front silver bumper bit the whole digitizer because i dropped my phone while playing basketball. It still works. It has been a year now it has been in two phones and still works great. I must be lucky..
I got mugged for the SD though i bought it last year for £60 from Argos a store in the UK. Now you can get them for half the price oh well.. I am waiting for the 128gb ones to come out so going to buy one lol..
today also my Sandisk Ultra HC I 32GB it's died, tomorrow I'll test with pc but no sign of life :crying: WTF samsung !!!
hey i have the same issue with an 32gb sd card, it was workking great and then i was getting the error about
"SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" and then i tried everything i could and my computer detect the sd card and it seems to be working normal but in my phone i have the error over and over again and it was draining my battery too, and the only thing i did was change to another 16gb sd card and this one is working.
maybe there is a problem with the 32gb sd cards
I have a 16GB Sandisk UHS-1 card and i have been getting this issue as well, and its becoming more and more frequent. Whenver it happens, the ringtones/notifications for certain apps like Gmail and Message get reset as the ringtones i set were stored in the sdcard. Also the photo frame app i have on my homescreen often resets to nothing as the pictures were also stored in the sdcard. Its really annoying because I can leave my phone sleeping, only to wake it up realizing my ringtones are all set to silent and my photo frame has been reset. At least i know its a common problem. damn you samsung!
Has anyone actually tried checking the connection on the ribbon as suggested? Mine has been fine since and works fine.

There is no way anyone would know you have opened it, the screws are all Philips instead of t6. As long as you use the correct screwdriver it won't damage the heads and will leave no sign of entery and it takes around 10 mins to complete. Or you could take it to Samsung to do but seems a lot of hassle for such a simple fix.
Also most people are rooted without concern of the warranty.
So there's no seals or stickers that are broken?

Nope, no sticker or seals and just so you know all screws to remove the back are identical, there are only two screws inside which are different but do not need removing for this. You only need a Philips screwdriver ( I used a ph00 x 40) as long as the screwdriver fits the screw well it will not damage the head. Once screws are out a flat head screwdriver or similar are helpfull to prise the back off.
Hi Guys,
A little feedback from my experience with this.
I too was experiencing the "Unexpectedly Removed" error on my 32GB Class10 Sandisk.
It was playing havok with my setup because I use a 8GB Ext4 Partition on the card, where I move 90% of my apps. (About 6GB of that is used by games + their "external" data), and it keeps my phone and FAT32 partition free for important stuff. (I use Link2SD and DirectoryBind)
The problem is, after the device wakes, Link2SD can't find any of the apps, so I can't start any of them, and I have to do a full reboot to get them back. :/
So, after searching and searching, I couldnt find a valid solution.
I tried with a 16GB class10 Samsung, and a 32GB Class10 Samsung card. Exact same setup. NO ISSUES.
Everything works perfectly.
Then I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933743&page=2
Where most of them are experiencing this error with Sandisk cards.
Apparently, it's a known issue with Sandisk Cards (especially the 32GB models), and cards sold after December 2012 no longer experience this.
I have contacted Amazon.co.uk about replacing the card as it's only 2 months old, still waiting for their answer. Will update if anyones interested.
cheers

A curious question if I may.
Was this a SanDisk Ultra (UHS) card? Most (if not all) Android phones do not have a proper UHS-I driver today and, although the card is supposed to switch down automatically, that transition time can fool the OS sometimes.

I read something about UHS compatibility, so I got an SD-HC
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B007JTKLEK/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1357264092&sr=8-7&pi=SL75
Is it the same thing?
Hmmm. Ok, might be getting somewhere.
Any idea if these cards have an internal "power saving" system that maybe kicks in if voltage drops below a certain level?

Yes, the red and Grey SanDisk cards are UHS.
Yes, they definitely have controllers and the host device can command them (if it knows how). I know that they allow In System Programming (ISP) for updating firmware. They support auto-standby, power-off and sleep modes but am not certain if the card would switch without command. Check the SD link in my signature if you really need more info.

I tested my SanDisk 64GB Ultra card in a Note 2 and it had the same symptoms (Mine were worse, with the card locking up while playing music after a few minutes, causing mmc timeout errors in the kernel).
I switched to a Samsung 64GB Pro card and since then I haven't had any issue. It's also twice as fast.
The amount of headaches this SanDisk card gave me is insane, probably the last time I buy a card from them.
i have sandisk ultra class 10 32gb. try this setup. use minitool to reformat your card then set it the cluster size to 16kb.
for me so far so good. will test this in a couple of days.
