[Q] Will a Galaxy S2 from Europe work in Australia? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I lost my phone in Paris around 3 weeks ago while I was on a group tour of Europe. I am still waiting for my tour manager to send me a lost property form (as the French police wouldn't give me a lost/stolen report within 24 hours) and want to buy another phone. I am in London at the moment and am looking to buy a new Galaxy S2. I was wondering if all Galaxy S2s are the same – as I want it to work on the Vodafone network in Australia (Melbourne). I'm guessing I am likely to find a GT-I9100 (and not a GT-I9100T, as I had previously).
So the question is, will any Galaxy S2 work on the Vodafone network in Australia or do I have to buy a specific model (i.e. GT-I9100T)?
Thanks,
Jack.

Should do, yes. Will have to be unlocked to work on Australian networks though.

if both are gsm and if its unlocked ,then yes.
just go for the international version of i9100 , you should be ok.

since you are buying an international model with (non carrier locked) should work with any networks, no need of any unlocking.

I can confirm the opposite worked for me, lost my phone due to a night out in Melbourne on the Absinthe, bought a new phone out there and used it back in the UK after getting it unlocked no problems (On Telstra in Aus > T-Mobile UK)
But as others have said, fairly sure most models you get here are unlocked due to the international model.
Are you going to buy from somewhere like Carphone Warehouse/shop, or eB*y? You can get sGS2 off there for £260-£280 at the minute.

Why don't you wait two weeks and buy the s3!?

Best unlocked Samsung Galaxy series phone

Okay gang, I need your help. I'm new to the android landscape (note was my first android device) and was asked by a good friend of mine to find her a phone.
She's looking for a Unlocked Samsung Galaxy series phone that she can use here in the US as well as be able to swap a sim card and use for service in Italy when she visits.
So two questions. What device do you all recommend, and where is the best place to procure it?
Thanks in advance!! I know this is a galaxy note forum, but couldn't think of a better group of folks to field these questions

Agreed. The unlocked Nexus $399.99 is the best choice for now.
Sent from my AT&T Galaxy Note™ - please forgive any typos
Here's a list of frequencies used by country:
http://allworldcellphones.com/gsm-frequencies-list.htm
Italy uses GSM 900 and 1800 frequencies which is supported by the International Note as well as the I717. I didn't see anything about LTE or HSDPA related figures, but I only looked for 3 min and clicked the first link.
My suggestion would be for her to determine what she wants in a phone. Does she want to take notes? does she want a small phone? As long as the phone has the proper frequencies, she would be able to use it in Italy. Most AT&T phones have the capability of running 800 and 1800 as well as many others, but verify by looking at the specs before buying. If she has a US carrier in mind (like AT&T) she can buy one of those subsidized and pay an unlock fee from a site (cheapest I've heard of was $8) and will probably save money.
If she wants to buy a phone outright I'd say look at the galaxy 2 series. From what I hear it's a great phone, a large community here (if she feels the urge to mod it) and can pick a new unlocked one for about 400.
Hope this helps a little.
any international unlocked phone will work. the international gs3 wouldnt be a bad bet. n7000 as well. you just wont have lte. I would not recommend an at&t direct phone because it will not be unlocked. so sim flipping could be an issue in italy.
International Galaxy Note, Galaxy Nexus, or wait for the Galaxy S3 to come out.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke

Galaxy S 3 Singapore

If i pick up a GS3 from Singapore will it work here on att/tmobile? I am here in Singapore now and everyone is saying all phones are sold unlocked by law.

The only different is the LTE band, which cannot work on AT&T
I m a Singaporean and I am using Galaxy SIII now. By law, there is no carrier network locking. Even Apple had to obey that when they just selling their iPhone 3. In the US, it was initially carrier locked.

Is your galaxy s3 network locked

I had my s3 supplied by orange UK and thought that it would probably be locked to orange although there was no branding on the box or phone.
Started looking over the net to see how I could check and found that if you enter *# 7465625# and they read off or disabled then your phone is completely unlocked.
Mine is which is a real bonus so well chuffed.
Sorry if this was already known to everyone but was new to me and thought it might be useful for some people.

Got mine direct from O2, presumed it was locked down tight but using the code you provided it shows as fully unlocked.
Bonus!
Thanks for pointing this out
Could be due to the delay just to get the phones out the networks haven't had time to put their code into Android, perhaps when they get all the preorders out future ones will.
Mine is from Affordable mobiles so I know it will not be locked
I was told that I had a version of orange software on here, although no orange apps etc. But phone was really buggy so flashed with the latest release, been really good since the.
Just pleased its not locked also, helps in the event I don't remain happy with it and decide to sell it.

I can't sleep either
On O2 bought post-launch and no lock
Mines unlocked and I'm on Orange also, checked last week which I'm pleased about.

It certainly looks that way! I got mine on preorder and it came unlocked, whilst other O2 folks who waited till after release got a locked phone.
I asked O2 what benefits there were for preordering with them but they didn't mention it being unlocked! In fact, they didn't mention any benefits!
Vodafone contract handset "box only" means no contract just paid £475 for handset and it's unlocked.
SIII'ed
On orange uk and its locked
Also i can't believe orange have removed the firmware update option with there bloatware
Is T-Mobile batch unlocked? If so, would it work abroad?

Got my rather wonderful Galaxy S3 on Vodafone contract.
Unfortunately that USSD code doesn't seem to work on mine.
The phone and firmware is unbranded though.
So I'm guessing its open to all networks?
Plus the phone arrived in a Samsung white box, and not a Vodafone one.

(HELP) what is the best carrier for galaxy s3 I9300 in usa

hello ,,,
i bought galaxy s3 internationl version two days ago
but i am still looking for unlimited data plans
i heard that the i9300 is not working with verizon , and if i choose T-MOBILE i will get only 2G
i also heard about SIMBLE MOBILE great offers
so what is the best carrier and best unlimited plans should i choose ?!!
i am asking this because some carriers not working with my phone .
this is my first post , thanks alot :good:
I started with AT&T here in Phoenix. I have in the last month gone to T-Mobile for the price. Where I didn't roam before I do now. As Leo Leporte "The Tech Guy" says get the carrier that works best for you.
You might pay more for data but if it does work when you want it it doesn't do you any good. There is a post in this category that talks sbout get AT&T using none smart phone plan. Also most 4G that AT&T won't work on I9300. Read this site carefully for the right model of your phone. Good luck!

The best carrier in my opinion for the i9300 is t-mobile and while you won't get 4G in the LTE sense you'll get T-mo's faux-G which is HSDPA

[Q] s3 unlocking

Ok I have searched so this thread is just for confirmation.
My sister will be getting me a s3 i9300 on her contract with orange, I plan to use it on my o2 sim.
Am I right I just need to root the phone, then use GalaxSim Unlock once to perm unlock it?
upgrading from galaxy ace so whilst its not the latest its one hell of an upgrade still
Yeah, but remember backup efs

As a matter of fact, all my contracted phones came unlocked (Vodafone Motorola (Some sort of flip-phone, or whatever they're called), T-Mobile: M7600, Omnia 7, HTC 7 Pro, GS II, GNexus, GSIII)...
And so did this of friends and relatives. We live in Europe, not America. We still have those freedoms

In the UK, only phones4u, cpw etc give you unbranded and unlocked phones on contract. This is because they bulk buy. The same handset can be given out regardless of carrier choice. They are never left short of o2 handsets with 3643 orange handsets they can't sell.
If you go direct from the carrier you will get a branded and sim locked handset
