[Q] Is there an ICS firmware alternative to the VM firmware? - HTC EVO 3D

I've been reading... and reading... and reading... (and then distracted by the chad war)... and reading and am having trouble finding if there's new firmware (not VM) for the ICS roms. I'm running:
ViperROM IC3D Beta 3
Android 4.0.3
Sense 3.6
Kernel 3.0.16-g4211684
Firmware 1.13

As far as I know, many people (myself included) have had success running ICS on the 2.17 firmware from Sprint's last Gingerbread OTA. I don't believe there have been any firmwares after that one except the VMV (Virgin Mobile Virus).

I'm running Meanrom 0.8 ICS on 2.17 and my phone has never run better.
VPN, hotspot, good battery, 3d, GPS, roaming,...
I installed ruu 2.17 first after rooting then reflash hboot 1.4 and TWRP recovery
Now I'm gonna jynx myself.
Never mind forget you read this

I ran mean Rom and newt one s Rom without fooling with firmware. Long as u do a full wipe u should be good.

Mainver

I have searched and searched and can not figure out which Mainver I'm on? I went under about phone to software info and I don't think that's correct.
So how do I tell which Mainver I'm on?
Any advice would be great!
Thanks!

Get the phone in fastboot then connect it to your pc and type the following on your pc cmd prompt:
fastboot getvar all
Ok thanks!
Is there a way I can do it without a pc?

I'm not sure. After the OTA my software version matched the 2.x mainver but then I restored my nand and it is back to the 1.x version although my mainver is actually the 2.x.
If you haven't flashed an ICS ROM and haven't gotten the OTA you should be at 1.02.605.6.
If you haven't flashed an ICS ROM and you HAVE gotten the OTA you should be at 2.01.605.11.
If you have flashed an ICS ROM or I think the Bamf cubed ROM (but don't hold me to that, I just know it's a Bamf ROM that did it) you could be at 3.10.605.7 although I'm not certain if every ICS ROM does that, I haven't ventured into ICS land yet.
Got ya, thanks for the fast replies!

[Q] build# 1.13 to 2.17???

just realised that 1.13 is the ics leak base build.
i'm assuming 2.17 is the gb base build?
thanks, guys...

Yes.! But there is also a SPRINT 1.13 firmware (it was one of the very first one on the 3vo and had hboot 1.4). The new 1.13 is a virgin mobile firmware version

ohhhh...
so, since downgrading i'm probably on the *sprint* 1.13 build since we had to flash the ruu in order to downgrade the hboot.
then, i'll have to ask my original question:
after downgrading i only updated my radio.
before flashing mikvirgin (based on the ics leak) should i have flashed an updated build#?
2.17? although, i think that's gb based, right?
or, can i just leave my base at 1.13 and flash whatever roms i want to?
thanks guys...

A few Questions.. Rooting, etc.. a couple issues..

Firstly.. I'll admit that I didn't read as throughly as I probably should have.. I have rooted several phones with the first being the original Motorola Droid and then a couple others.. All fairly tricky but for the most part no big deal... Anyway, I had no idea what S-ON or S-OFF meant nor was it very easy to find information such as this explained in detail..
Anyway, here is where I'm at..
1. Running S-ON, ICS w/ Slim 1.6
2. Phone has a tendency to reboot when it feels like it.. hasn't been too bad but seems to happen more when it's on 4G
3. Phone will NOT allow me to mount the internal storage nor the sd card when I plug into a computer.. like I mean it's not even an option, all I get are charge and internet tethering options..
4. the BIGGEST issue.. I can not tether whatsoever.. I've tried several apps such as Barnacle & PDAnet but none of which work.. I'm sorry I'm just used to the days of my incredible where it was very easy to tether and install ROM's all day long so I guess I was spoiled..
Any help would be appreciated.. the more I read though the more that S-OFF will offer and am I correct to have read that if I do the S-OFF I can turn my phone back to a "locked" status in the boot loader and in turn can also put back to completely stock??
Thanks!
You need to flash the old firmware patch. Should be able to find it in one of the rom threads

So after checking into some things I tried going a different route..
I downloaded Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 3.6 (ICS Latest) (Aroma Installer).. followed the instructions.. installed with S-ON etc.. everything seemed fine.. NOW it won't stop rebooting after I configured Gmail & my work E-mail.. I can't boot into the bootloader menu unless I remove the SD card because it tries to flash the PH98IMG.zip as soon as it loads..
SO what to do next?? HBOOT I have the following information
UNLOCKED
VIGOR PVT SHIP S-ON SL
HBOOT-2.11.0000
Radio-0.95.00.1118r/0.95.0.1223r
OpenDSP-v10.6.0.7611.00.0919
eMMC-boot

HELP please!!
.make sure you install the kernel and the gb firmware patch...these 2 things missing will cause bootloops .
If you have issues ask in Nils thread and I am sure he will help you out. I have been s off and on ics firmware for awhile prior to the aroma install method. Otherwise I could help you out more
Edit: you will want to select the first 3 boxes on the aroma install screen...Rom...kernel...gb firmware patch
Not sure how the installer works after that...but that's a start.
Edit2: you are currently on gb firmware, in the future if you run a gb Rom you will need to flash the gb kernel for the Rom. Any ics based rims will require the ics kernel AND the firmware patch. Without the firmware patch your sd card won't show up properly. The wrong kernel will end up in boot loops. Hope this helps explain things a bit.

Thank you very much for the help... I really thought I was on ICS firmware.. I know this sounds stupid but isn't Android version 4.0.3 ICS??
OH WAIT it just hit me.. So my ROM is 4.0.3 but the kernel is still GB.. I gotcha.. so of course my next question is.. can I upgrade to ICS firmware without S-OFF or is that a requirement???
I think what I'll end up doing is just flashing GB ROM but curious what would be needed to get to ICS firmware and can I get back again?
You can upgrade to ics firmware (via ics ruu). However with s on, you can only run the ruu you are currently on and/or newer versions/leaks. With s off you can run any ruu you like.
Basically you never ran an ics ruu, so your firmware is gingerbread. You can run either gb or ics. With a gingerbread Rom, you would flash Rom and kernel. With ics Roms, you'll need to flash Rom, kernel, and firmware patch.
If you decide to upgrade and run a ics ruu it will upgrade your hboot, radios, and change the mount point for the sd card. The mount point change is the reason for the firmware patch. After running an ics ruu you will have ics firmware. Running a ics Rom, you'll flash Rom and kernel. If you change mind and want to go to a gb Rom, you'll need Rom, kernel, and firmware patch.
So depending on which version or way you go depends on the method of flashing a Rom. Firmware is independent of roms, and the only easy way to change firmware is via a RUU.
Supposedly the ota is coming soon, supposedly the latest leak is the ota, supposedly the s off exploit will not be able to be patched.
I decided to s off...there's many threads with lots of info...so if you decide to go that route take time, read, and read some more. It's not too hard just take your time and don't get frustrated.
Once s off, most roms flash the kernels automatically, saving you a step. You can also run any ruu you want. Ruu is like a factory image that wipes the phone and upgrades radio, etc....basically it will be like you first got the phone and turned it on.
Everyone has different experiences with radios, some are betterfor some, others worse. Overall the new ics firmware seems to be better on battery and network speed for me at least.
There's many ways to proceed....however most roms that are being worked are ics based...and will be more so when the official ics ota hits.

Sure enough!! I went with a GB ROM CleanROM GBE 1.7.5 and it is working perfectly.. I'll decide if I want to move forward with anything else.. I really liked the way the ICS ROMs ran so I man end up moving to that firmware in the future but thank you very much with the explanations that REALLY helped a lot!!
Have a great 4th!!

ICS is the way to go, and for it to run properly you should run the latest RUU leak. This will give you the correct firmware. Once you flash the recovery of your choice back onto your phone and re-root, you really should S-off. Amon-Ra is the best initial Recovery choice, because it'll root anything, right there in recovery. S-off simplifies EVERYTHING. From there, you can flash the ICS Rom of your choice, and not have any of the issues you've been reporting.
With S-off, you can flash whatever radio you want, put a different boot-up splash screen on, and the kernel installs automatically when you flash a Rom.
It's a little time consuming, but it isn't difficult. There are threads from some very helpful guys here that explain how to do everything. So when you have some time, I suggest you just go for it. You'll be glad you did.
Best of luck,
BBEgo

I'm still a little leary on doing the S-OFF so I have a question on this.. What do you mean by this?? What has to match to be able to run ICS ROM's.. Are you saying the ICS Firmware version needs to match the ICS ROM?

Need to update to 2.17.651.5 hboot 1.40

I am looking for the 2.17.651.5 with hboot removed (I dont want to lose hboot 1.4)
I used freeza's aio update from here but My firmware is still 1.13.651.7.
It's been awhile since I was at this point. I just got out of the virgin crapware and still trying to get my phone back to normal! lol
But like I said I do not want to lose my hboot 1.40.
Update I believe I found what I was looking for HERE I am just confused on what version to get odex or deodex not sure what the difference is or if it makes a difference if I am going to flash a rom.
I'm thinking you need to do it again. For whatever reason it didn't take. The aio file is what I've used in the past without problem. The second link you posted is for a full rom... That's not necessary if all you're trying to do is update your radio
Yeah I am looking to update my ROM but not my hboot

I think you are ok. I went through the downgrade process and used the all-in-one and am showing my build number as 1.13.652.1. My hboot is 1.4 s-off and I have no issues flashing any Ics or GB Rom.

1.13 and 2.17 are Rom bases, right now you are on 1.13 Rom with the firmware that came with 2.17. Flash a Rom based on 2.17 and your phone will show 2.17 in settings>about phone>software info. however you can see your pri version and baseband version have changed.

Exactly this. The Rom I am on is based on the VM leak, hence the 1.13. Roms labeled 2.17 are based on the last GB ota. I left my firmware and radios on 2.17 since that is the last official Sprint firmware update, but my Rom is 1.13.

Yeah, same here.

rooted running Meanrom ICS, can I just update to get stock sprint ICS???

I've been running MeanRom ICS. I wanted to give the sprint stock version a try. What's the best way to do this?
Thanks.
Oh, read the forums, I think about a gizzilion boot loops, problems, issue's
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
Well since you can't update ota if you are rooted, just find a stock rooted rom and flash it just like any other rom. As you SHOULD know from reading, you can't run the new kernel without the new hboot, so update to that if you want to use the new kernel.

The 2.4 version I do believe was based on the VM leak. His newest 2.6 version is based on the latest Sprint release, and works just great. I have been running it with no issues.
If you have S-off , you can upgrade the hboot and kernel to the latest. If not, you can leave the kernel and hboot you have and just flash the rom.
Just and idea.
