Hey guys,
Ive been having this issue for a little while now, my data connection (Telstra) seems to have trouble maintaining a stable connection.
I have no idea what could be happening (or not happening), but here is the problem...
If I wakeup my phone and try to use something that requires a data - it will not receive a connection. The work around for this is to disable the data connection (Settings > Mobile Networks > Use packet data - untick. Then re-enable data.
This seems to force the data to connect, and then it seems to work fine... until my phone/data is un-used for a while.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Anyone have a fix?
I had the same problem while on Gingerbread (2.3.3) aswell - prior to the ICS update.
Cheers.
I work for Telstra, and I can tell you that due to the upgrade to 4G, the towers are intermittently doing strange things, depending on where you are. Take out your battery and give it a minute, put it in and you should be right.
If a phone gets stuck between two towers it can be a pain in the arse.
Thanks for the reply gogogu.
Do you know how long these works have been going on for? I think I've been having this issue for as long as I've had this phone (around 1 year).
Being in Melbourne you probably got the start of it. So yeah, its a long term thing we just have to put up with. We have one of the fastest wireless infrastructure in the world so its worth it in my mind.
Even if you're not with telstra it still affects you!

I have read somewhere that some people are experiencing their data connection to freeze or have idle times even with good reception.
Now I have never had an Aussie firmware, in particular the modem part of the firmware which I believe is the part related to the phone performance?????
I have tried disabling and enabling the fast dormancy. Turning off data and enabling it again fixes the problem. The hang isn't permanent so things like email, syncing, weather all update fine, its just web pages can sit loading for ages or time out with no acitivity shown. But try again a few minutes later and the internet is super quick without the reception of tower changing.
Does anyone else with Optus Australia, or vodafone or telstra for that matter, have the data stalling issue? What exact modem version are you using?
Yeah i think this is actually related to Optus's network.
I have scrubbed my phone and applied the XXKH3 firmware and it seems a bit better to me. I also disabled Fast Dormancy.

I have too agree with Simmo3D the current state of not just optus is abysmal.
But there is a light at the end of the tunnel with the NBN it should is ease the congestion that we have been having to deal with because of the explosion of people updateing there facebook status.
Also we have both telstra and vodafone putting in new 850MHZ tower which can handle a much larger amount of traffic which means the Que time or "Idle time" will be reduced.
I had wondered about it being Optus... but turning data off and back on straight away seems to fix it instantly so wondering whether it isn't because of congestion otherwise it wouldn't always fix the problem temporarily .... but I am no expert. It isn't a slow down, its a complete stop with no data going either way. Occasionally it will sit there sending permanently but that isn't always the case when it stalls.
I am not disagreeing just trying to confirm whether this is definately optus or something else related ot the wrong modem component for optus network.
I never noticed this on my previous phone (i8000 on win mo and alos a buggy android port) but to be honest I didn't really play around on the net so much because I didn't have anywhere near this amount of data I have now and it wasn't as appealing to play round with online....
Were either of you on Optus with another phone you used data on a lot? Did that experience the same stalling of data.
no problems on telstra here
My dad is optus and has the same issue on his phone. Me and my gf are on Vodafone and have a slight issue but not as bad becuase were mainly on the new network. Telstra finally turned on QoS so there is no problem on that network.
Remember there are 800 open cases with the ombudsman over optus's delivery of service.
There are tweaks to the build.prop file to mitigate phone issues but won't help as much as if optus fixed there infrastructure

Thanks all. Looks like concensus says optus is the main culprit and i don't need to head down the flashing of a typical optus modem firmware with my imported phone to fix these dramas. Thankfully its not all the time so I can live with the slight frustrations at times. At least the voice calls aren't doing the same thing...

As far as I know there is a known bug in the phones software that stalls data transfers when switching between 3g and h. The fix is to lock the phones data out of h.
To do this use the stock phone dialpad and key in *#301279#
Select option 2
Select option 1
Then use menu key and go right back or end.
Should not be using h network now and your stalling should be fixed.

Try the Irish Modem stronger locks .

I've not seen this posted anywhere in the i717 part of the forms, and felt like it should be OK to post this.
Ever since I got my Galaxy Note from Rogers, I keep getting sporadic data connectivity issues. LTE data will work great, but if I set my phone down (such as when I am at work) and don't touch it for several hours, by the time I return the phone has no data connection.
However the status bar shows that I have full bars connected to LTE, yet when I open a browser or try to use the Play Store, it keeps saying I have no data connection.
This problem occurs on stock, and with custom roms, currently I am using the latest stable release of CM9 Quincyatt.
Has anyone else run into this problem (with Rogers or any other provider that offers LTE with the sgh-i717)? If so, is there anything I can do to mitigate this issue, currently the only fix I've is to simply reboot the phone. This seems to fix the problem, allowing me to access data until the next lengthy period of inactivity. Then of course after several hours of inactivity, when I go to use it again data will once again be dead (even though the phone reports I have a strong signal).
have you tried this Rogers rux lf4 modem? I've been having great results with the bell modem

Ah, I have not. Thanks for the tip!
I'll give this a go when I get home! Thanks!
Hi all,
I'm having a data connectivity issue on my phone when moving from 2G to 3G. If I'm connected to 2G, then move into an area of 3G coverage the phone will successfully migrate to the 3G network, however the data connection will often not start up for between 30 minutes and severanl hours. Flipping airplane mode will *sometimes* fix it, but more frequently, even rebooting the phone won't work. However, if I lock the phone to 3G from the settings, I do not encounter this issue at all. It only happens on my home provider (Jersey Telecom - they're small). In the UK, on Three, it didn't happen.
So, given that the problem can persist over reboots, and doesn't happen in the UK, it makes me think it's more likely a network issue, so I called them up. The network engineer managed to reproduce the issue on his colleagues Samsung Galaxy Note, but they are adamant that it's a phone issue and not a network issue, and is a matter of Samsung not sticking to the specs. The phone isn't currently rooted, but I can root it if it will help me debug the problem. From the sounds of it, it may be problem consistent to all Samsung radio phones on our network.. and I really don't want to switch to another phone.
They say that from their logs, the phone is not always trying to create (or presumably, migrate?) a PDP when moving to a 3G network. It's hard to say whether it's a problem with the phone or their logs.. has anyone else experienced a similar issue? Does anyone know how to access logs about the phone trying to create a PDP etc. so that I have something to compare with theirs?
Thanks

Hey all, I've had my Evo for almost over a year now, and data was never an issue. As of lately, I'm unsure what caused this issue to start popping up, but my phone will have a 3G or LTE connection, but even if I don't move or leave the phone alone, I will lose the data connection and a popup in the notification drawer says "Unable to establish wireless data connection" where toggling data or airplane mode doesn't usually cause it to come back, it just does whenever it feels like it. I don't know whether it's Sprint, or my hardware, but this issue has been present for the past few months with no solution. I am on the latest radios, sense ROM, and learned about custom PRL's today (on 56019 now) and nothing has solved it. I've searched for anything on this device related to this problem and haven't found anything, so any suggestions or help would be appreciated
Any suggestion whether the issue is at least my phone or the network would be helpful. I have no clue what the cause of the issue could be. Thanks

I noticed this more frequently as well once I installed 4.3 a while back - seems like the radio is much more sensitive and would pop up that message occasionally when it would switch between 1x/3g/4g/Wi-Fi - or from roaming back to sprint. I just ignored it - dismissed message and all would be well.
however, sprints network has been more and more troublesome these past 4-6 months - actually switched to ATT beginning of May due to this after being with Sprint for 16+ years.
Since about a week, I'm having issues with my 4g. It used to be super reliable and fast, but there are moments now where it completely grinds to a halt and then picks up again few minutes later.
I've already checked with my provider but I have unlimited data, so it's not a throttling issue.
Is there any test or app I can use to see if there's a hardware issue? Any other suggestions to find out the issue?
Thanks!
What did your provider say? maybe they have some problems with the network. maybe sometimes there are too many people in one place. maybe you need to try another sim card. maybe its bad coverage.
Have you turned on/off the fast LTE Mode in Network Settings?
Try factory resetting your phone.
I had the issue with my provider. Later i found out that they had a special giveaway of 100gb data to all customers. I think thats what caused it although they didnt agree.
I couldn't get 4g at all around my house.
Since I updated to 128 I now get 4g intermittently at my home address whereas before not at all ?
