So I tried to root my Evo 4G with Gingerbread 2.3 using revolution.
I installed Super user and clockworkmod via placingm them on the SD card and going in via the phone and running the install.
Root didn't appear to work and couldn't get recovery up. I ran a old version of PC36img.zip I had with my old Evo that was running Froyo which was a dumb move on my end.
Now my phone can't beyond the HTC Evo 4G loading screen. I also can't get to the recovery mode. Any help would be appreciated! Details are below.

Can you go into fastboot?
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
You need to first flash a recovery as PC36IMG, I suggest Amon Ra. You can grab a properly named copy of the latest version from my Dropbox here.
If you really want to use ClockworkMod, you can choose whichever version you'd like from http://goo-inside.me/supersonic/clockworkmod. Rename if necessary.
Once you have recovery flashed, just flash whatever rom you want. If you did a nandroid backup, restore that. If your backup was made with ClockworkMod, you'll need to use ClockworkMod to restore it.
If you want to stay stock & don't have a backup, just flash one of the stock rooted versions of the latest OTA.

OK I jus came from evo 4g yesterday got the 3d but now ok don't laugh.... Kinda 4got how to do a Nandroid backup... Heelllp
Threw recovery. Which one are you running??

Clockworkmod recovery but i do have amora ra recovery, dont i have to use that one for the recovery right??
For my money, TWRP is the best recovery for the 3d.
Can I get the link to that recovery?

Here you go - http://teamw.in/project/twrp/67 and here is guide to install - http://www.scottsroms.com/content.p...talling-TWRP-Recovery-1.1-(hboot-1.3-1.4-1.5) . I would also recommend checking out CleanROM as it is very good ROM with a very active developer. Fast, Stable and great battery life. www.ScottsRoms.com . Worth at least checking out.

There is no Amon Ra for the 3d, you should use Twrp, it's as reliable as Amon was on the 4g.
I've used clockwork from day one works great, no issues
Was considering going to twrp how do the nandroids compare from recovery to recovery? Same format?

Same thing basically. You'll select "backup" I believe and then you can select individual partitions that you want included in the nandroid.
what's nice is that you can choose to compress your back ups with twrp to save space. A standard back up is around 800 Meg uncompressed.
Ok, I have been reading all day and have noticed alot of new Evo 3d's being sold at sprint stores with the 1.40 h-boot. I noticed because I was one of the lucky ones to get one today!
There is alot of information on this forum, almost to a fault, because most of it is for 1.50 h-boot phones. I am pretty new to rooting, so be gentle.
So, here is what I would like to accomplish with my root.
My confusion lies it the area of recovery. I have read a few guides on here and this one seems to be the one I keep coming back to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196131&highlight=guide
I know I need to do Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery tool. Part of this process involves downloading and installing Clockwork Mod Recovery (CMR).
Then the guide tells me to install another recovery, Team Win custom recovery Project (TWRP) + Eng H-boot.
Now, the recovery I would like to use is 4ext Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560279
So, am I flashing 3 different recovery's? Or, do I just flash the 4ext instead of the CMR/TWRP?
My endgame is to flash MeanROM which is a 2.17.651.5 base firmware. But, my phone has a 2.3.3 firmware on it (kernel 2.6.35.10, build# 1.13.651.7), so I will have to upgrade my firmware to the newer version, correct?
Any help or steps to get me started would be awesome!
TIA
Root that bad boy with unrevoked just Google search it.

Thanks...
I won't have a prob doing the root, steps seem easy for the actual root process... via revolutionary.
My issue is the recovery I want to use and the steps to get the rom I want going.
Recovery is simple just download twrp or ext4 the info is in the threads bro over by dev section

You may have to use cwm or TWRP temporarily in order to flash SuperUser to gain root access. The 4ext updater app will flash 4ext for you, I just can't remember if it requires su access but I believe it does. Switching recoveries is easy pezy... Don't sweat it man.
And yes you will want to update tour firmware via BOOTLOADER. Freeza has an all in one firmware update package that works nice.

CWM 4.0 works like a champ
Have a look at Closeone's downgrade tool thread , Post #3 specifically, and start at step 23 since you have Hboot 1.40 & already have fw 1.13.651.7. At the end of it ate some additional resources for 2.17 rooted Roms & the radio update.
Basically run revolutionary for s-off, install any recovery (4ext or cwm 4.0.1.4 recommended), run xhausx's 2.17.651.7 radio only update, format system data & cache (or superwipe), flash MeanRom.

Coolness. Thanks.
Just curious if I need to do this step 2 in that guide... STEP 2. Flash Eng Hboot, Team WIN recovery.
I'm guessing not the TWR, but what about the Eng hboot thing?
Thanks.

In that eng hboot guide you should do up to step 5 to get s-off & cwm recovery v4.0.1.4. Yes, u need HTC drivers & usb debugging enabled.
You don't need eng Hboot, Revolutionary will install a fully working hboot 1.40.0011. You can try that one out later if u need more advanced options.
After the radio update, If you want 4ext Recovery, you have to boot the OS, and install the android app which will install the actual recovery, replacing Cwm if you loaded it when asked by Revolutionary's process.

Awesome. That helps me out a ton! Thanks!
I'll be flashing here in a few, I'll keep posted on my progress.
Just did revolutionary and cwm recovery and all is good. Did a nand backup and it told me No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
I'm assuming this is normal... going to flash superuser now... (peed a little)

There really isn't a need to flash Su since it's included in MeanRom (you can if you want it included in a backup).
Also see my 2.17 Based Rom Links post for the radio update before meanrom (Listed at the bottom on Closeone's 3rd post)
Ya, I did the SU so I could have a clean stock, rooted nand backup.
Everything went smooth as butter! Phone is running MeanROM and very fast. It is a clean stock rom. I'm diggin' it.
I didn't notice any beats audio menu or any way to see if it's actually there even? Is it just there and ya dont see it? I see dsp manager baked in...
Well, anyways, thanks for all the help! I'm up and running all thanks to the help here!
Peace
Thanks grim! Yes, I did the feeya all in 1 radio update from bootloader. Easy as pie!

It's there when you play music inside the HTC Music app, won't work with Bluetooth though (see recent post in MeanRom thread). Ziggy kernel (default in current meanrom) doesn't have 100% Beats even though most "Beats Features" are a part of the Rom. Chad Goodman's kernel, Anthrax RLS8 Final, has Full beats support (if you can tell the difference).
I've newly rooted the phone. I haven't put on a new custom ROM, but surely I should be able to overclock it with SetCPU. The highest frequency I can get is 1188 which is probably the standard clock speed.
Anyone know how to get it higher, without a custom ROM?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using XDA
You need an OC kernel for that. And if you are S-ON you can't do that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495657
Follow this thread to achieve S-OFF status if your device is unbranded or vodafone branded then install a kernel like leedroid's, mine is running on 1.5ghz atm.
Edit: You can actually install kernels while S-ON, but I'd get S-OFF if I was you as you'll have trouble when ICS comes out.

You also need a kernel that supports overclocking. I prefer Anryl because in my opinion it's the most stable and the battery friendliest of them all. You can flash it with an app calld "Flash image GUI".
Can I use that kernel with the original Sense ui?
Because all I did was Roy my phone with recovery and have done nothing else.

Yes and no. The kernel has to state that it works with Sense 3.0 if you want a smooth oc kernel try Anthrax, it overclocks to 1.5ghz which should be enough, anything higher will just over heat your phone and make it unstable.

In development section there's a stockist kernel that I've been using recently that can be ocd to 1.7. Has ponury support also..

All you need is a kernal thats clocked at 1.5 you want need anymore then this any higher will result in high battery drain

Thanks for that guys, I will try out a few that say that they work with sense 3.0. I will click up to 1.5, so want battery life and no overheating.
By the way how do I get back to the original kernel if I encounter any problems?
If I just do a nandroid backup then try the kernel, then if i encounter any issues do a nandroid restore, would it being back my phone and original kernel?

If you are s-on, the only way is to use the Flash Image GUI app. If you have problems, just re-load the stock kernel with that app.

or he can boot recovery via fastboot and flash any kernel of his choice.....that's the 2nd way.
and the 3rd and the best way for s-on hboot is to use 4ext recovery and enable smart flash, which will allow him to flash kernels just like S-OFFed phones

what issue are you facing ?
booting recovery from fastboot works on every phone.......and
which recovery are you using ?
I suggested you to use 4ext recovery in the above post , which you can get from www.4ext.net , download and install the free 4ext recovery updater which will install 4ext recovery in your phone...
you can't directly flash kernels from recovery if you are s-on .....
you will have to fastboot boot recovery or use 4ext recovery's smartflash feature if you don't want to use pc

do a nandroid backup with 4ext recovery , then if you want to restore to stock kernel , just restore the system and boot partition.
If you backup using different recovery, you cannot restore the backup with another recovery....
Just double checking before I take the plunge:
I take it that my current CWM Revolutionary recovery will not be good enough to backup and install a new kernel? Is that correct? And that the only way to do this is to use the new 4ext recovery instead?

Your current recovery is good and works well for both S-on and S-OFF phones..... but the only issue is S-on users can't flash kernels directly with CWM , You will either have to use PC to boot CWM recovery on your phone to flash kernels , or you can use 4ext recovery and enable its smart flash feature to flash kernels if you don't want to use PC.
But make sure 4ext supports gsm EVO 3d..
Thanks for that, I will now try that, I'm sure that 4ext works on my gsm 3d because it asked me to confirm the phone model when I first opened the app.

Can someone help me please, I'm getting really frustrated as flashing kernels etc, seems a little more complex than it did with the HTC Hero.
I am trying to flash this kernel, I have S-ON, with Sense 3 and when I use 4EXT to flash the akernel_v10.08.zip it says:
assert failed: write_raw_image ("/tmp/newboot.img", "bcot")
E:Error in /sdcard/akernel_v10.08.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
So then the instruction in the first post for Anryl Kernel says if you have S-On do this:
•for s-on download boot.img and flash via fastboot flash boot boot.img
but I don't know how to do this. I have downloaded the boot1008.img renamed it to boot.img on the root of my sdcard - but I can't find any option to install it in 4EXT or in the Fastboot (<- i assume fastboot is when you power off and hold volume down and power on - that menu).
Can someone please help?
I don't have s-on but if I'm not mistaken
you have to put a copy of the boot.img into your fastboot folder on your pc. Then power your phone into hboot by holding volume down and tapping the power button. Keep holding the volume button down untill you see the white hboot screen. It will say hboot on the screen to verify your in hboot mode. Then open up your command prompt and type cd then hit enter then type
c:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools\
Then type
fastboot flash boot boot.img
It should allow you to flash the boot.

ok first off here are the details of the phone... evo 3d cdma, hboot 1.50 unlocked s-on via htc method.
now, the recovery i have is 4ext touch recovery. all of a sudden i cant flash roms on the recovery. i flashed some stock and gingerbread roms a few days with no problem and without doing it with adb.. i decided to try out the infected eternity rom just to see how it is. i did a nandroid backup of my previous rom and i flashed the rom through 4ext as well with no problem. then i decided i want to go back to my previous rom i was running which was zr3d 4.1gt. which i flashed via 4ext recovery without adb and without any problems. now when i tried to restore the backup i was stuck at the htc white splashscreen. i figured i did something wrong backing up the rom and tried a fresh install but ended up stuck at the htc splash screen again. this happens with every rom i try to install and every backup i have now and the only rom that will flash and boot is the infected eternity rom. i tried everything i can think of. any ideas and/or advice is apprecited. thanks for your time!

Are you using a super wipe before flashing or restoring your nandroid? It sounds like you have some crud leftover from the infected eternity install that is interfering with any new install.
Actually used synergy format zip.. it didn't work. Is there a specific super wipe that I should try?
