[Q] Unlocking Electrify 2.3.5 -- Did I screw it up? - Motorola Photon 4G

Actually, I'm not sure I went wrong somewhere, just didn't understand things right.
I rooted about a month ago.
I unlocked today using skuddy's electrify.zip that was posted here (and the other site).
After I unlocked (temp and full), I installed CWM, and booted to that, and did a Nandroid backup, then reboot.
Now the Electrify is acting like I wiped it, where I never told it to do so. Does unlocking it wipe it? Or does performing the backup wipe it? Neither make much sense.
Maybe restoring the nandroid backup would have answered that (if the unlock wiped it, the nandroid restore would do nothing for me) but instead I just re-rooted, installed Titanium from my SD card, and am now restoring my backups.
I just downloaded joker's latest (0.6.1) CM9/ICS, but I'll worry about that tomorrow.

Pretty sure unlocking wipes it.

Okay thanks. So I can throw out my nandroid backup since it is a backup of nothing?
Just wish I knew that going in. Oh well lesson learned, and not too harsh a lesson compared with something like a brick or boot loop.

ONLY IF YOUR ELECTRIFY CAME WITH 2.3.5!!!! If you started with 2.3.4 and upgraded to 2.3.5, you are SCREWED!!!
Sorry for yelling, haha... Don't want to give you false hope!
If your Electrify came with 2.3.5, like mine did, YES you can unlock it. The unlock is temporary, but you then make it permanent.
I think you need to root first? Not sure. I used the torpedo method. Might as well go to Team US Cellular, they have all the Electrify-specific stuff in one place. The torpedo method can be found here, but it's spread across several posts. gr33nd3vil over on TUSCC has it all in one post. Torpedo is easy, they tell you everything. Pretty much.
Once rooted, unlock with the electrify.zip. It's in TUSCC's download section. The .zip comes with instructions. It's pretty clear, and easy to follow.
Everyone says to install drivers, during both procedures? This is more CYA than anything. On Windows 7, the drivers were automatically installed.
I'm fairly new at this, but I will help you where I can, if I can. Shoot me a PM anytime, here or on TUSCC (same name), but I'm up here more often. Though, I think Tapatalk will tell me if I get a PM, regardless.

Unlocked bootloader without root?

Well i am not rooted at the moment cause i flashed a zip that took root off and still have a custom kernal going with unlocked bootloader is that even supposed to be possible?
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Thats impossible. As soon as you flashed that "zip" it over writes everything. You need to be unlock to have a custom kernel

well thats what i thought but i couldent use root explorer or any root access apps but when i turn off the phone it still says unlock

Interesting. Interesting indeed. Is there anyway you could upload a vid of this?
i wouldent suggest it seeing now after it turned off it wouldent do the sbf files to fix. idk if it was dealing with that cause the sbf always finishes but ends up in a boot loop which as of right now im trying to fix it. but if it happens again ill c what i can do to show you. cause i always thought you had to be rooted to have an unlocked but idk if it was just a one time thing

I have this same issue right now how it happened for me is that I orginally used the one click root method I found here. Later down the road I noticed that a stable build of cm7 had come out so I decided to try it out. I flashed pudding and it worked just fine and unlocked the device when I went to go get clockwork on the device however, I noticed the my root was no longer working reading in the comments section I saw that the one click root method was not compatible with the unlocked bootloader. I tried to root the phone with the system.img file that it mentioned using in the guide it worked at least as far as pushing it to the device but still no root. I then tried to flash the device back to stock I used the sbf file provided and it did wipe the phone but I still have the unlock icon when I boot the phone and can no longer root it no matter what method I try. If anyone can help me with re locking my device, I would greatly appreciate it.
Have you tryed the depudding. Go into the pudding unlock section theres one that relocks it just like how u unlocked it
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
As far as I'm aware, being unlocked and being rooted are two separate processes on this phone. You don't have to have one to have the other. I've been rooted and locked, rooted and unlocked, and unlocked with no root. Hope that helps.
And I haven't had any problems with the one-click root and unlocking or sbf-ing back to stock.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Thanks for the help guys I got it to work now had to do a factory reset and then flash the sbf file and the seemed to unroot the device it still didn't unlock it however I think if I used the depudding method curly mentioned it would work.
photon
I am currently running an "unlocked bootloader" on a non- rooted system on my photon 4g. I was rooted and then unrooted because I couldn't flash cwm for some reason....I am really really looking to installing miui with the ultimate iphone theme. I love how poloshed and clean it looks!

sbf to 198-7 for jokers rom? newbie help.

ok so im confused. i just got my photon and i have unlocked it and rooted it and got cwm on it fine. but now i need to update to 198-7 for jokers rom, now im not sure where to find the sbf's and do i just go straight to 198-7 from my 154-5??? "as these are based on 198-7 you need to have sbf'ed 198-7 first (it doesnt flash updated radio)" and i just flash with rsd? like i had to for root on the unlocked boot loader? and finaly where do i get the sfb? thanks for all the help. im just new to photons.
thanks
You need to install RSD LITE and flash to 198-7 before applying the jokers locked 4g via bootstrap.
Read everything in this thread first for info on doing this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202666
Then since the links are dead you can get the files from
http://www.holylivingfuck.com/ACS/SBFs/
Before flashing make sure your battery is greater than 50percent full. 100percent is better.
There is a quick instruction list I posted earlier for someone with a bricked phone. Dont care to rewrite it so here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412153
So read , read read, copy and paste **** in a cheat sheat document and dont skip any steps... Good luck and know if you messup and you think the phone could be bricked you can always flash back via RSD lite... Long as you have plenty of battery.
Just thought i should say- im that fool with the bricked phone haha this worked perfect but i did get an error about "BD" or something at the end, i dont remember the exact error but i ignored it and sure enough it worked just fine!
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Joker's ROMs are based on 198_7, so you will need to flash it. ShabbyPenguin's holylivingfuck site has the 198_7 ROM. I flashed 198_7 first before unlocking, so I'm not sure, but I'm guessing the 198_7 ROM will re-lock the bootloader in which case you will have to unlock again.
It will also unroot the phone.
Yep flashing the sbf with rsd lite will restore the stock bootloader.
---------- Post added at 07:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 PM ----------
Good to hear you got it back.. The phone is a bit more resilient than we think.
It is nice to have a fallback incase something doesnt work right.. Start using titanium backup for quick restorations or partial restorations and you wont lose anything text conversations etc..

The reason for flashing 198-7 is to ensure everything non-flashable is up to date and to know you have read enough to save your self in an emergency. Sbf's are our master reflashes that fix screw ups. It is possible to flash joker roms on 198-6(latest ota) but i want people to have a consistent experience along with the tools to fix problems already in place.
It may not be as easy as other phones but we are working on that.
Also the dev section has a great sticky by loki with links and instructions to nearly everything

Makes sense. I thought it was to do with the deodexing of 198-7. Good to hear more into it from the man himself.

OK now I'm confused,
I'm on 198-6
Rooted via torpedo
Installed bootstrap apk
Wiped all user data
Wiped dalvic cache x3
Installed skinny4g
Rebooted wiped dalvic cache x3
installed black out theme
I'm thinking skinny4g is deoxidized because i have flashed multiple themes?
Haven't had a hiccup or reboot yet
Running smooth
Am i missing something???

Reason he would like everyone on a standard platform is for control over the testing.. Rhetorics but 198_6 may have force close and 198_7 may not. No need to diagnose problems that aren't on the approved platform..
He is not saying you cannot use 198_6 but it makes it easier if everyone use 198_7 for testing his rom's.

DROID X2, rooted and stuck on 2.3.4 OTA upgrade

My participation in this forum saved my ars on some weird behavior my rooted x2 had been exhibiting lately. update: Nandroid backup saved me. Now, after a few days my phone is bugging me to OTA upgrade to 2.3.4. I see that this gingerbread has considerable benefit on ye ole ROM front.
Can someone help me out with a step-by-step upgrade on my rooted device? Do I need to unroot first? I have to admit to an unroot prior to my problems. Something with an app I need to get upgrade. Thanks in advance for the help.

If you want to apply the ota, grab ota rootkeeper from the market. Open the app, save root, then go to town updating. No need to unroot. Once updated, open the app again and hit restore root, as the ota will remove root.
That's pretty much it. As it stands that is the only way to get root on the latest ota so if for some reason you run into an issue and lose root, you will have to sbf back to 2.3.4.

For updating to the latest release you can't have changed any of the system files (ie frozen), and if you are rooted it's best to do a temp unroot (with a Voodoo backup of course) and make sure you boot into the Stock Recovery and attempt to flash that way. Should go without saying that you have to be on the stock rom.

Slim, i have ignored the OTA upgrade notification for 9 months. If its not broken, dont fix it theory. I had tweaked the phone with root only so that i could barnacle my tablet to the internet. Since i just saw how easily i recovered my phone back to my last nandroid backup, i figured i would try to upgrade and ROM this thing as it seems ive gotten it this far. Can someone link me to an easy to follow, step by step on "flashing stock recovery mode"? I can unfreeze programs with titanium backup and then unroot with ota rootkeeper. Just lrt me know how to stock recover, ie: phone plugged in? Unzipped file locations? External or internal sd card? I appreciate the help.
if update is failing
try unrooting with rootkeeper (keeps backup) like slimman suggested
if that doesn't work it's time to flash 2.3.4 sbf

a little surprised, that you made it 9 months and phone didn't try to install overnight after several notices
I know that has happened with other moto phones like D2 and D2G
Guys root has nothing to do with not being able to receive ota.
Nothing.
Lol
It sounds to me like you need to sbf back 2.3.4
Make sure your phone is fully charged.
Do you have usb debugging enabled?
Forget about guessing games, sbf back to 2.3.4.
Root your phone via Pete's. Do not use zerg.
Install recovery
Install superuser etc. If you feel the need but Pete's su. Works fine.
Install voodoo rootkeeper.
Make the back up.
Again with these phones root has NOTHING to do with receiving or not receiving ota.
If your ota is borked there's somthing else going on. You must have removed (bad idea) or froze something
Just sbf and follow my instructions again.
Hope that helps.
As I said in my guide, all updates were done with root, and I went from2.3.3>2.3.4>2.3.5
All rooted each time all retained root via rootkeeper.
Hope that helps

Failed to boot 2 temporary solution (will loose 4G)

Update:
there is a good solution by peetr_ located @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798145
no need to flash full SBF.
Earlier post (July 2012)
*************************************************************************
this method is obsolete now.
but it was the only way at that point in time.
Use it on your own rick.
it worked for me to get back my photon 4G after locked OTA 2.3.5 update
it uses Electrify sbf. Electify is similar to photon with no 4G (Carrier is US Cellular - may not work with Sprint)
I am not in US so not able to check.
the method I used to clear Failed to boot 2 error on photon 4g:
be warned that you may loose 4G. this is ELECTRIFY SBF
downloaded the Electrify sbf form here
use RSDLite 5.5 to flash this sbf into the phone. in the final stages, it will show failed. but don't worry
it will work. try to switch the phone on. some times it will not boot.
wait for some time and it will boot slowly.
perform a factory reset from settings or by using android recovery
it is easy to root with photon-torpedo.tar
root help is available here
Update pls visit

anybody try it? please post your results

I was just going by what i had read in some forums earlier. And trust me anything is better than bricked!
If you dont mind, what works and dont?
Anyone else having issues download SBF from Teamuscellular site? I have used IE, Chrome, Firefox, & Safari to try and download with no avail! It always stops around 300mb, when it states it is a 500 or 600 mb file, so im basically getting only half the file dl'd... Maybe someone could send me a copy of what they have or something?!?! I have been going through just trying to revive my phone for days now... ANY HELP APPRECIATED!
Is there a way to flash a working cdma radio? ::fingers-crossed:
Yes there is.

It's a challenge, I know.
Looks like I have myself some serious reading to do but if I can help you guys out with this I'm down! I have to get this PC back up, so I'll be on this asap. Thanks a million, and hopefully I can contribute some useful information.
On a side note, I have experienced a few reboots randomly since flashing the sbf. I'm sure out had to do with the fact its a different phone firmware, bUT thought you might like to know.

Those reboots are modem panics, because of no radio.
Or you can try to install mofish rom with bootstrap and try to fastboot flash only boot.img first, or I can give you sbf with boot and recovery.
Factory reset?

peetr_ from this thread resolved my issue and I'm no longer bricked (working WiFi AND 4G!). The fix comes around the 3rd or 4th page.
Ok so I was finally able to get PC back, flashed radio SBF (Radio & Gps fixed) - saw something about modules for 4g and sprint im taking it? I currently do not have any calling, mms, etc priveledges. I did reroot, added bootstrap, doing nandroid backup as we speak. I guess only left to do is get this mopho back up and running - completely!

I'm a complete n00b to rooting and have been trying to find an answer to the same question before diving in. I have looked through tons of info, including the 2 threads posted in responses, but can't seem to get a clear answer as to whether these methods work for 2.07... There seems to be a lot of conflicting reports. Would love to know if you confirm that either of these work.
May have answered my own question
It looks like there are further reports of moonshine working on 2.07.

I'm going to give it a try tonight and will report back here.
I haven't seen anything about unlocking or rooting on 2.07, only s-off. I have a new DNA being shipped out thanks to my warranty, but I really don't want to go back to 4.1 after being on 4.3 for a few great months!

Yep, sorry for mixing up unlocking and rooting with s-off. I just thought getting s-off would better for a n00b like me as it seems to make the custom ROM / kernel process a bit more straight forward.

I tried last night and ran into a few problems and then ran out of time. Got an error along the lines of [can't obtain temproot] during one of the moonshine steps... This may be due to the fact that I did not factory reset before moonshining. I will try again this evening (after factory reset).
Do you know I should go through the normal phone set-up after the factory reset? Or just reset then dive into moonshine?
Thanks!

I'd think factory reset everything. I believe that is what I done. There is a support page for the moonshine program but I forget where it was.

I found the site..
I must had been on 2.06 when i done mine. I didn't even know there was another update.
I read on the moonshine site its only for 2.06
JUst type moonshine droid dna and you'll see it. I don't think I'm allowed to post links.
Well, I can 100% confirm that moonshine works for 2.07. It took several tries (4 to be exact, with factory reset between each), but I am now s-off! Woohoo! Now on to flashing twrp, and my first try at a custom ROM.

Thanks for the offer! I was actually able to flash twrp and a custom ROM. It was much easier than I originally anticipated. My eyes are now open to a whole new world... Not sure I'll ever be able to go back to a stock Stock/manufacturer ROM.
Now running ViperDNA 2.0.1. I picked Viper as it sounds like this is one of the most stable/least buggy ROMs out there right now (plus it runs fine on the stock kernel). Do you have any other suggested ROMs for the DNA?

Looks good.
I too just had success with Moonshine. Just literally got my DNA, previous owner took the OTA. First time failed at "temproot", second time ran flawless.

Well, still troubleshooting some things. Successfully had root access and using the correct settings I could run wireless tether fine. I then proceeded to backup then install viper Rom. Set everything up fine however nothing I tried would get tether going. So I restored my backup (tether is a must) and still same issue. It starts but I cnt connect which is strange as I was using it fine earier.
So now I did a factory reset and flashed superuser, now tether won't start. Says "started with errors" using the exact same settings. So I'm going to try flashing the stock ota deodedex Rom see if that solves it.

Windows (Vista believe it or not...). Make sure you have the correct device drivers installed first, and uninstall HTC Sync.
