Failed to boot 2 temporary solution (will loose 4G) - Motorola Photon 4G

Update:
there is a good solution by peetr_ located @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798145
no need to flash full SBF.
Earlier post (July 2012)
*************************************************************************
this method is obsolete now.
but it was the only way at that point in time.
Use it on your own rick.
it worked for me to get back my photon 4G after locked OTA 2.3.5 update
it uses Electrify sbf. Electify is similar to photon with no 4G (Carrier is US Cellular - may not work with Sprint)
I am not in US so not able to check.
the method I used to clear Failed to boot 2 error on photon 4g:
be warned that you may loose 4G. this is ELECTRIFY SBF
downloaded the Electrify sbf form here
use RSDLite 5.5 to flash this sbf into the phone. in the final stages, it will show failed. but don't worry
it will work. try to switch the phone on. some times it will not boot.
wait for some time and it will boot slowly.
perform a factory reset from settings or by using android recovery
it is easy to root with photon-torpedo.tar
root help is available here
Update pls visit
http://www.groovypost.com/howto/motorola-photon-4-g-how-to-root-your-phone/

anybody try it? please post your results

your now stuck on a us cellular firmware and will not be able to find a mms fix besides maybe google voice. just saying.
Almost did the same thing myself, but looking for other fixes before I do such a thing... May have problems with calls as well.

I was just going by what i had read in some forums earlier. And trust me anything is better than bricked!
If you dont mind, what works and dont?

Anyone else having issues download SBF from Teamuscellular site? I have used IE, Chrome, Firefox, & Safari to try and download with no avail! It always stops around 300mb, when it states it is a 500 or 600 mb file, so im basically getting only half the file dl'd... Maybe someone could send me a copy of what they have or something?!?! I have been going through just trying to revive my phone for days now... ANY HELP APPRECIATED!

Is there a way to flash a working cdma radio? ::fingers-crossed:

Yes there is.

I know the first thing in doing when I Finnish fixing the PC!
Peetr if I can do anything to help out, I'm eternally thankful for all you've done to help me get back to working order! I'm new to Moto, but I've been tinkering with htc few a while now, may be able to help with some testing.

I would need from you, to read custom sbf thread (all posts) and try to get boot.img, recovery.img from Photon 2.3.5 (sv2) and system.img dump in your phone.
It's a challenge, I know.

Looks like I have myself some serious reading to do but if I can help you guys out with this I'm down! I have to get this PC back up, so I'll be on this asap. Thanks a million, and hopefully I can contribute some useful information.
On a side note, I have experienced a few reboots randomly since flashing the sbf. I'm sure out had to do with the fact its a different phone firmware, bUT thought you might like to know.
Sent from my Motorola Electrify using xda app-developers app

Those reboots are modem panics, because of no radio.
Or you can try to install mofish rom with bootstrap and try to fastboot flash only boot.img first, or I can give you sbf with boot and recovery.

Factory reset?

Anyone having an issue like this can refer to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760506
peetr_ from this thread resolved my issue and I'm no longer bricked (working WiFi AND 4G!). The fix comes around the 3rd or 4th page.

Ok so I was finally able to get PC back, flashed radio SBF (Radio & Gps fixed) - saw something about modules for 4g and sprint im taking it? I currently do not have any calling, mms, etc priveledges. I did reroot, added bootstrap, doing nandroid backup as we speak. I guess only left to do is get this mopho back up and running - completely!

So like I said I have got most of the phone back, I have wifi, radio, gps. NO calling, text, or data. tried to install modules.zip through bootstrap, they installed, but lost my wifi. Restored back with nandroid. Now I guess I wait... Until either yourself of mofo give me some instructions as to whats next. Not trying to f it up again!

Install mof 2.3.5ish rom first.

sbf to 198-7 for jokers rom? newbie help.

ok so im confused. i just got my photon and i have unlocked it and rooted it and got cwm on it fine. but now i need to update to 198-7 for jokers rom, now im not sure where to find the sbf's and do i just go straight to 198-7 from my 154-5??? "as these are based on 198-7 you need to have sbf'ed 198-7 first (it doesnt flash updated radio)" and i just flash with rsd? like i had to for root on the unlocked boot loader? and finaly where do i get the sfb? thanks for all the help. im just new to photons.
thanks
You need to install RSD LITE and flash to 198-7 before applying the jokers locked 4g via bootstrap.
Read everything in this thread first for info on doing this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202666
Then since the links are dead you can get the files from
http://www.holylivingfuck.com/ACS/SBFs/
Before flashing make sure your battery is greater than 50percent full. 100percent is better.
There is a quick instruction list I posted earlier for someone with a bricked phone. Dont care to rewrite it so here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412153
So read , read read, copy and paste **** in a cheat sheat document and dont skip any steps... Good luck and know if you messup and you think the phone could be bricked you can always flash back via RSD lite... Long as you have plenty of battery.
Just thought i should say- im that fool with the bricked phone haha this worked perfect but i did get an error about "BD" or something at the end, i dont remember the exact error but i ignored it and sure enough it worked just fine!
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Joker's ROMs are based on 198_7, so you will need to flash it. ShabbyPenguin's holylivingfuck site has the 198_7 ROM. I flashed 198_7 first before unlocking, so I'm not sure, but I'm guessing the 198_7 ROM will re-lock the bootloader in which case you will have to unlock again.
It will also unroot the phone.
Yep flashing the sbf with rsd lite will restore the stock bootloader.
---------- Post added at 07:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 PM ----------
Good to hear you got it back.. The phone is a bit more resilient than we think.
It is nice to have a fallback incase something doesnt work right.. Start using titanium backup for quick restorations or partial restorations and you wont lose anything text conversations etc..

The reason for flashing 198-7 is to ensure everything non-flashable is up to date and to know you have read enough to save your self in an emergency. Sbf's are our master reflashes that fix screw ups. It is possible to flash joker roms on 198-6(latest ota) but i want people to have a consistent experience along with the tools to fix problems already in place.
It may not be as easy as other phones but we are working on that.
Also the dev section has a great sticky by loki with links and instructions to nearly everything

Makes sense. I thought it was to do with the deodexing of 198-7. Good to hear more into it from the man himself.

OK now I'm confused,
I'm on 198-6
Rooted via torpedo
Installed bootstrap apk
Wiped all user data
Wiped dalvic cache x3
Installed skinny4g
Rebooted wiped dalvic cache x3
installed black out theme
I'm thinking skinny4g is deoxidized because i have flashed multiple themes?
Haven't had a hiccup or reboot yet
Running smooth
Am i missing something???

Reason he would like everyone on a standard platform is for control over the testing.. Rhetorics but 198_6 may have force close and 198_7 may not. No need to diagnose problems that aren't on the approved platform..
He is not saying you cannot use 198_6 but it makes it easier if everyone use 198_7 for testing his rom's.

Bootstrap skinny4G

I have searched the forum and cant find this basic answer. How do I load skinny4g via boot strap? I rooted my phone, but it is still locked because I dont want to loose 4G. Can I revert back to stock rooted if I dont like skinny 4G?
Sorry that I am so clueless. I recently traded in my Epic 4G and am still learning how to handle the MoPho! Thanks!
You can still use skinny4g with 4g working, for other roms that are "unlocked" you need to have an unlocked device. Id suggest getting cmw on your device (its in android development somewhere) and using that to flash skinny4g, atleast thats what I did. Dont flash any other roms unless they say they are locked or youve unlocked your device

Skinny 4G is extremely fast and tweaked. You need to the bootstrap version
FIRSTLY
The gist is you will want to use RSD light have the SBF file and then flash it . Make sure battery is greater than 50 percent charged.
Download RSD Lite and 198_7 SBF from.
http://www.holylivingfuck.com/ACS/SBFs/
You should read this thread on more information about 198_7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202666
Make sure you have proper USB drivers for OS 64 or 32 bit installed, install RSD lite and follow the directions below.
Make sure your battery is greater than 50percent before doing any of this.
1) Fire off RSD lite, select the SBF you need 198_7 .
2) Hold down power and vol up till RSD mode comes up
3) Plug into usb then start the flashing sequence.. ( the whole process will take a while)
4) The process is done when RSD lite says manually power up the phone.. You may need to take the back off and pull the battery to restart it incase it doesnt power up on its own.

Get Jokers 4G locked ROM from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331648
To install the rom you need to place it in your external sd card.
Run the bootstrap and then apply it. You will need to whipe the cache and clear dalvik cache before applying the ROM.
Good luck.
Hey everyone. I'm brand new to the Mopho world and i was just curious about a few things.
I see that rooting and unlocking breaks the 4g on the device and so far, i've only come across skinny4G's rom that keeps 4g intact. Why can't the same method that's used with skinny be applied to a CM7 or CM9 rom?
Just wanna get my bearings before I jump into this. I'm coming from a year and a half of moding the OG Evo. Just felt that it was time to move on. All explanations are welcome!
I DL'ed RSD Lite, when I put my phjone into RSD protocol and connect it to my PC RSD lite doesnt recognize it. Any ideas on what is wrong? Thanks!

Restore to stock

I'm sorry if the answers to my question have been answered but I can't find them after searching for a few days.
I need to send my Atrix in for a repair or replacement. It is unlocked and rooted running Turl's CM9 right now. Obviously I can't send it back as is, so how should I go about everything?
Flash an SBF, flash a fruitcake rom, or something else that I haven't stumbled upon?
The only threads I could find are from a year ago and so much has changed since then. I just want to be sure I go about this the correct way. And should I go through ATT or Motorola? I know my phone is still under warranty with both.
Thanks for any help! It is much appreciated!
"Always have an exit strategy"
You can flash a fruitcake but the "unlocked" text will remain so you can hope for the best.
Or you can try an SBF (Disclaimer: at your own risk).
How long have you had it? Usually if you have had it for more than 30 days AT&T won't help but if you are still under "warranty" with them I would try AT&T first.
If you can't find a way to return your phone back to stock you can try Motorola, they might just overlook the modifications you have done.... or they might charge you a service fee...... or they might just send the phone back to you. It really depends on who ever is processing your claim and the mood they're in.
Also, please don't start multiple threads on the same topic.

Turn phone off and pull out sim card and sd card.
Reboot in rsd mode (olding vol+ at boot) and flash your sbf with rsd lite.

Ok, you don't happen to have a stock sbf file? I can't find one anywhere.
Also, why is it that we shouldn't flash sbf files? It seems that people have success with them but everyone keeps saying not to do that. But I can't find a stock flashable zip and the fruitcake links are dead so sbf seems to be my last resort.
I'm just stuck scratching my head because of all this confusion?

Look in the firmware superthread, in the last pages someone have a link in his sign to a page of many stock sbf files. I found there my updated one.
I always got succes with rsd lite but only with a full wipe with fastboot before it say "pass" at the end. Otherwaise it say to 'manually reboot'.
Don't know why people say "do not use sbf", probably there is a reason, but i think it is the only way to remove the 'Unlocked'
Here links to froyo sbf
and to GingerBread sbf
also you need to delete any folder about apps that need root to work and su folder and anything that presume you have rooted your phone
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Depending on what build you are currently on you do not want to "downgrade". So if you are on a Gingerbread build (4.5.91 or 4.5.141) do not flash the Froyo SBF. And probably if you are on the 4.5.141 build (2.3.6), it is not recommended to flash the ".91" build. That is where the issues can occur.
I have also used RSD Lite to flash back to stock (a few times) but always use caution. So, for @scarbutt11, do you happen to remember what build you were on before you unlocked the bootloader and flashed a custom ROM?

Yeah, I was running stock 4.5.91/2.3.4. I'm on a cm9 build now. I'm not sure if that will matter at all for flashing back to GB? I know I tried cm7 to see if it was just cm9 causing the problems, but it seems it is hardware related.

Yeah, it depends on what "Official" build you were last on. Since you were on "4.5.91" then I would just use that SBF. Like someone else mentioned, it is possible to use RSD Lite, just use caution.

Thank you so much @live4nyy and @LeroyVold!!! Without you guys I would have been still scratching my head. I owe you both big time
No problem man, i need to do the same.
my touchscreen is more and more often unresponsive, so i'm flashing my stock sbf as i write.
Finally got a chance to swing by the AT&T store. They replaced the phone no problem thanks again guys!

i need to do the same. im sending this phone in and already got my new atrix sitting here.
Freaking Motorola phones, they break without you even touching them. I gotta figure out how to send mine to att as well.
u need to do a write up in here of how u did it. it might be redudant to some but to others like myself, it will be like having my hand held doing a scary process...your guidance as having it done yourself would help...with a how to..

Free or did you have to pay?
LeroyVold said:
I had restored a few times to stock.
I do that:
Reboot in fastboot mode and fastboot - w, fastboot erase system, fastboot erase cache, fastboot erase preinstall.
Turn phone off and pull out sim card and sd card.
Reboot in rsd mode (olding vol+ at boot) and flash your sbf with rsd lite.
That's all.

For free, I bought the phone through them less than a year ago. All I said was that the screen was unresponsive and they looked at it for less than 10 minutes and then said they would replace it for me.

Thats not a bad idea. I have never done one before but now that I'm thinking about it I am sure there are others that need to do what I just did. I will try to write one up in the next few days. Thanks for the idea!

[HELP] mopho can't connect to network

From memory, I will try to recall exactly what steps I have taken to reach this point.
1. I started off fine from 198_7 locked
2. still fine, unlocked and on joker's cm10
3. I decided to go back to locked for 4g. then factory reset from the cm10 settings
4. from my mac, I flashed stock recovery and sbf the nopudding4u
5. after reboot, I got error "Failed to boot 4 -- Starting fastboot" or something like that.
6. I stupidly followed this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797787
but now I believe I was a person on 2.3.4 and should have steered clear of that guide. hindsight....
7. after reboot, I got error "Failed to boot 1 -- Starting fastboot" also something like that.
8. few hours later I realized I could use RSD because without pressing any buttons, the "Failed to boot 1" started RSD mode and I tried
to use 198_7 and it failed.
9. I then felt I had to use the 2.3.5 sv2 update and tried to find an sbf for it. and found this guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798145
10. upon reboot, I cannot seem to connect to any network other than wifi.
looking at *#*#4636#*#* i get "unknown" under network type.
in blue, that is my problem, thanks for reading. I keep seeing threads with similar issues with no straight forward answer and solution, which is why I am now writing a new thread.
thanks again, please help
You updated yourself to 2.3.5. To reconnect your going to have to flash the photon modules or flash a locked 2.3.5. Rom via bootstrap.

What happens when you try to change network type to what you need (CDMA or GSM)?

It reverted back to "unknown" as if I didn't even tap any other network type.
Just know its all good now after reflashing the modules. Twice.
yup for the first time i'm stuck
well i made an account on here just to figure this out but i wanted to get free internet (which i now know is impossible) with my Photon. it is stuck in Network type: unknown and i don't understand you guys or a solution. all i tried was the *#*#4636#*#* andnow i won't find servises nor connect. i can only use wifi and nothing else. please help.

You probably are in the same boat as I am. Flashing the APPROPRIATE modules for the photon's radios is the key to fixing this problem. Basically two kinds pre and post 2.3.5 sv2 pre being something of the sort of 198_7. figure out which one you need and either flash the modules or flash a rom
Sent from my Slim Photon using xda premium
how do i flash one or the other. i only kno the RSD lite with the Derpunlock.sbf (which by the way failed)
Wanna try being as thorough as I was describing my situation in the OP? Can't really help without knowing your current status. Should start from the point you photon was last working.
Let's see it was working then I tried to see if I could get free internet. So I put in this code hmm can't recall (*#*#3646#*#*#)? I think but it took me to my network section and I changed a network to gmail and ever since it has never connected.:banghead:

[Q] need cspire sbf or a way to get 3g back

ok i ran into a problem re flashing cm10 on my x2 had to sbf using the ntelos sbf re rooted and restored 754 boy's 2.3.6 nandroid and now i have no data, i can make calls and text but no 3g anyone know a fix for this or am i stuck till up grade. will c spire flash the correct sbf for me if i took it to them or is that a shot in the dark.
C Spire won't give you an sbf. I've been trying for months. Do you have a nandroid backup of the stock rom that came with your MX2? I've seen it mentioned a few times in this forum that you can sbf with the Ntelos file and then restore your nandroid backup of the stock rom and everything should be working fine. I have bricked two Milestone X2 after trying various mods and took it to my local C Spire store. All they would do is warranty the phone out and give me a new one. They could not use a sbf to reset it. Double check to make sure your data connection isn't disabled in your settings and try dialing *228 to activate your phone and see what happens.
Edit: I misread your post and see that you restored 754boy's nandroid. I'm not sure what else to tell you except what is in the last sentence of my post.
done the *228 thing. i have data enabled. i can make calls and text. as I've been doing research I've found out that I have no choice but to deal with it or warranty it out. i use Wi-Fi at home and the office so i think I'll deal with it for now.

the easiest way is to take it to one of the techs and tell them all it needs is the correct carrier files that control connection to the network not a whole flash
ill try it

Is there any possible way to get the carrier files directly from your phone so you don't have to keep going in and asking them to flash the files for you?

in theory yes there is how ever you would need to know exactly what files and where they are. also restoring them would be a pain without extensive knowledge on how they work or someone with the knowledge to create a walk through.
any update on getting the files written to your phone?
No I've been busy with work and haven't had a chance to go in. Will try Saturday.

have you checked your apn settings
these may help,

Did you ever get this problem sorted out? I'm trying to fix a MX2 I accidentally bricked while attempting to flash. I SBF'd but all carrier settings got changed to Verizon. Well I flashed a Sprint PRL to it and that allowed me to activate the phone again. Calling and texts work fine but no data at all, just like the OP.
first read the mx2 thread, if you have not yet
2 if you need to sbf only use sbf_flash not rsd |ite
3 you maybe able to fix by changing apn settings
4 if changing apn does not fix, you will need to take back to store, and have it reflashed

APN settings are only good for SMS or MMS settings..... I think. Anyway, I took it to cspire and they were clueless. All they tried to do was *228, which I had already done. Factory reset wasn't working either. Anyway all they could advise me to do was an upgrade since my warranty expired 2 damn weeks ago. They need to have REAL techs working in there.
I'm gonna keep experimenting.......
did you?
menu>system settings>battery & data manager>data delivery
check 'data enabled'
check 'background data'

Yup tried that too
I do not know, can settings be checked from radiocomm?
if so maybe someone on cspire, could save the settings, or get a screenshot

Hmm never tried that. Hopefully someone can pull that info so I can have something to compare.
if there has ever been an c spire mx2 ota update, and if someone saved it
it can be flashed, in flashmode, with moto-fastboot.exe
at least parts of it can, not sure if all moto updates flash the radio
I know with the D2G the 2.2 to 2.3.3 changed the radio
there is an update.zip for MX, have no idea what that would do to MX2
[ZIP]Cellular South (C Spire) OTA GB 2.3.5 Update zip
could really hard brick it, ,if it didn't, maybe could flash a MX2 sbf with sbf_flash
but that's something you try just before you toss it in the trash

If the update is to 2.3.5 it will bomb if it is to update to 2.3.6 it will bomb. Sbf flash is one of the only ways to safely sbf and still retain carrier information to allow data access. If you have already flashed the ntelos sbf with rsd lite then the only thing that can bring back data is to find an ota for 2.3.6 and modify your build.prop to 2.3.5 to let the stock recovery flash it. Or take it to your carrier and have them reflash the phone with their sbf. Sad fact but I've had it happen too much till I switched to sbf flash.

I tried sbf_flash using Ubuntu via VMware. It detected my phone but failed to flash each time. Could you elaborate on what to edit in the build.prop. That sounds easy since I've edited it before to add and change certain stuff......then again, would still need that 2.3.6 OTA and I've never seen one around. I'm not even going to waste my time or gas by taking it to Cspire. The people in there are useless when it comes to technical stuff like this.
