Touchscreen Issues - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Atrix seems to have a significant problem hopefully someone can help with. I dropped my phone and my screen had some issues when touching certain areas (ie. It wouldn't register as a touch during any app in certain parts of the screen)...so I replaced my LCD and Digitizer, and no luck, similar issues. So today I replaced the ribbon cable with a new one(with power button, front facing camera etc) ,and STILL the same issue.
I've tried new Roms, and done fresh/clean installs of everything but I've no idea what else I can now do, please help?

Although it doesn't make much sense, you may need to try the PDS partition fix. You'll need to google that and find the files and tutorial for fixing it.

Here's the pds thread. Maybe it'll help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131649

Update
Hey really appreciate your quick response to the issues I'm having.
I have tried PDS Partition Fix and unfortunately this hasnt helped ... both methods were followed to the letter and nothing the same issue applies.
Dont suppose there are any other suggestions that anybody can come up with?
I am thoroughly grateful for all your help!!

Only other thing I can suggest is warranty.

when you replaced the lcd and digitizer did you clean it very well between them? I have seen the slightest amount of dust disturb the digitizer, also when holding the phone upright is it the "e" "s" "d" "x" area of the keyboard that is acting up?

Moreover
Unfortunately, the warranty is now void since unlocking the bootloader, which I knew was a risk. I cancelled my insurance too since the policy excess was ridiculous.
When replacing the digitizer I cleaned the connectors using a microfibre cloth, the ribbon cable connecting the digitizer to the board was also replaced, so potential board connector issue?
Its random, what works...if the screen was in quarters from top to bottom then quarter 1 and 3 do NOT work...so i cannot pull down notification bar unless I rotate screen, and use a working area of the touchscreen. But thanks to Go Launcher I have set up a swipe gesture for notifications. And thanks to perfect keyboard I can change the height of the keys so I can at least send a message. But this isnt ideal, since the keys are so small.
Any other thoughts on how to clean the connector properly or anyone experienced the same?

the digitizer connects to the speaker ribbon cable and then goes to the board, but that ribbon cable usually doesn't get damaged.
you can reflash a vanilla 4.5.91 and possibly not brick and if it comes back it wont show the unlocked text I don't recommend this due to some people experiencing hard bricks doing it. But then you might be able to return it.
you say its random, so does the entire screen work sometime? or is it always quarters 1 and 3? if its not changing I would say its a bad digitizer.

Well I've tried 3 different digitizers so I know this is not the issue.the change of ribbon cable was merely a stab in the dark. Its random the places that doesn't work, but ALWAYS the same places work/don't work...so quarter 1 and 3 DON'T, but 2 and 4 ALWAYS do.
How might a reflash work? I'm 99% certain this is now software related...my only other theory is the mainboard may be damaged in some way.
Reflashing may be an option, this is my current set up...I've upgraded the radio so whether this will cause issues I've no idea ...

it won't fix the problem but it is a way to remove the "unlocked" text from when you start up the phone, or are you completely out of warranty / no chance to return ?

[Q] X10 Mini Pro Touch Screen Problems

Recently my cellphone started doing this, all of a sudden, the touch screen stops receiving any input, and my phone locks, I can still use the keyboard, so I know the device is still running, only the touch screen appears to have the problem.
I was running under CM6 when this started to happen, so I tried re-flashing my ROM and nothing changed, then I restored my phone via SEUS, and still the problem was there, so I think the problem might be hardware related.
I've tried to mess around with my phone, trying to reproduce what triggers this behavior, and I'm thinking it has something to do with the hardware keyboard, as my phone does't lock up as easily as if I used the keyboard.
So, I'm currently looking for any suggestions (besides buying another phone for the time being) to bring my phone back to its former glory!
I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks.

Its probably the ribbon in the back, its better known as a "flex cable" of tiny cables connecting the motherboard and battery to your screen, if you can find a disassembly guide on the internet this can probably be fixed by buying the flex cable from Ebay... I fixed my old Nokia N80 through this method, it only cost me about 5-6 bucks.
When you open your phone appart, the flex cable should look like this...

I think i've seen a disassembly guide somewhere on the themes and apps part of forum.

Well alright, if the flex cable method does not work, your last resort should be changing the digitizer ie. the screen which can also be bought online.
Thanks to you all, I will try both and see if those fix the problem!

Detesto, keep us updated on how you get on... I hope you make it first time round. I've managed to find the x10 mini disassembly guide but not for the mini pro, there should be one out there. I don't recommend opening your phone without this guide btw, you can easy damage your phone all together.
Good luck.
Ooops!
Sorry guys! I totally missed replying to the thread!
I have a friend whom also had the X10 mini pro, and I tried with his ribbon cable and digitizer, and found out the problem was the digitizer, so I just replaced that part. That was almost a year ago... yikes!
The phone is well and running still, but I replaced my phone with the Optimus 2X and gave my xperia to my sister in law.
Thank you all for your help and sorry for the late response!

[Q] Possible Hardware Brick Issue

My tablet will not boot any farther than the Viewsonic Birds screen. At first I thought this has to be a software-related issue. That being said, I've tried every single possible combination using nvflash to no avail. Today i decided to take a closer look into my tab and noticed on the docking station connector connecting to the system board, one of the wires were clipped. Now because of its position (fifth wire from the left) I at first assumed it came that way (not sure why I thought that but yeah...). Once I found a high-def picture of the tab's system board untouched I realized this was not the case and I somehow clipped it upon taking the tablet apart. I attached a picture of the one I found with a red arrow pointing to the wire in question here.

Does anyone know what exactly this wire is responsible for?
Is it possible that this wire being cut is causing my tablet to get stuck at "The Birds" screen?
Also, has anyone had any luck with getting their hands on any schematics or wiring diagrams of the gtab?
Has anyone done something similar to this, and how were you able to rejoin the cut wires (with them being such a small gauge)?
If this wire is the culprit (which I'm praying is the case, so I atleast know the problem), my best guess is because upon boot-up the OS goes through its checklist and once reaching the docking station connection, this wire being cut halts the boot-up process hindering me to go any further. That sound like an accurate assessment? I'm just trying to understand the issue as best I can.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!
I really don't see that as being an issue.
When did you open the tab up? Before or after boot issues?
Have you hit the internal reset button?
Have you double checked your nvflash files and stock image to make sure they are correct for your system/Gtablet?

Both, first time I opened it everything went smooth and started right up after back together. Second time was so I could put a dab of MX4 thermal compound on the tegra2 chipset, and ONLY on the chip; none on the board. After back together, it turns on but freezes at 'the birds'. During this whole thing, I had BoS 5.2a loaded.

Since this started, only every time Ive tried anything related to formatting (format all.zip), or nvflashing.

I have tried flashing back to bekit's stock (pre 4349, how mine came) and stock 4349 1.2 (since I was on a 1.2 BL at the time). Between every flash, I've hit the hard reset, ran the FORMAT ALL.zip, then preceded to nvflash.
Its also hard for me to believe this is somehow a hardware issue. Seems to me if it was, the tablet simply wouldnt turn on or I atleast wouldnt get a picture. One interesting thing roebeet brought to my attention was that eventhough it freezes at the birds screen, the little black bar along the bottom still pops up meaning the kernel is even being recognized, then it freezes. It would be nice if I could know the order precedence when this tablet is turned, as in the checklist the soft/hardware go through. Maybe that could help with narrowing this problem.
Anything else you can think of, please let me know cuz I'm almost at wits end.

Actually, weird things tend to happen in regard to hardware issues.
I had a laptop that I dropped from 3 foot up. Drag and drop function stopped working. Half my keyboard stopped working, but only for certain programs. Some boots resulted in the taskbar not registering until I control alt delete to bring up the task manager window. At first, I really thought these were all software issues. But after reinstalling windows for 3 times the same damn things kept happening.
So, yeah, hardware issues do result in weird software issues. It's like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer. It's a hardware issue, but you might end up a little cukoo afterwards.

Yeah, hardware issues like that I'm accustomed to having 15+ years experienced working on/building oem/aftermarket systems and being a pc technician by day. But this issue is getting harder to believe it is hardware since A)The wire accidently cut belongs to the docking port and B)The symptoms its exhibiting are the exact same symptoms I've experienced with my tab in the past before opening it at all. But with that being said, I dont know what else I can try on a software level.
One thing I thought of last night that I'll try sometime today is just trying to install bekit's stock 1.1 ROM from my external sd. Read somewhere that the internal sd has gone bad on some gtabs. Dont know if this will work since nvflash seems to flash properly, it just doesnt reboot and I dont know what else to do at this point. Thanks for your input though.

But when the cable is in and gives power to the unit its starts normal and turns off normal.... and that rly starts to piss me off
So pls help a noob
that is the battery temperature warning.
For some reason the contacts on the battery may not be making clean contact.
Take the battery out and with a tooth brush clean the contacts on the phone and the battery.
reinsert and see if that solves the problem.

The usb/charging port that is so i got my phone back. they didnt wanna touch it couse they told me it would die sooner or later.. they could change the mainboard but they didnt wanna do it.. So i need to fix it my self. so i ordred a new usb/charging thingy and gonna replace it when i get it.. Ill update if it works or not (sry my sucky english)
Bro dunno but have I tried using a new battery? The symbol is a temperature/battery warning. Did I get it wet??

nope. has not got wet at all... Even tho the repair dudes says it "water" damaged.. .Anyhow.. i ordered a new battery too. so first gonna test that before i change the usb part.
Get the battery cover, hold each of the sides with you're fingers and bend so the middle of it is going in ward, bend fairly far, now try, fixed my battery problem which was similar to this, also it would alsol think it's charging when it's not and constantly vibrate, I had been bending the back before and just realised when the phone was screen down it was fine so realised was loose, hope you fix it

well, you are the first person who actually fixed the problem. No one in all the forums I've been reading was able to identify or fix it.
Could you please tell how you replace it? are there any instructions or ¨comprehensive guide¨to do it?' I'm having the same problem too.
Thank you
No one like my fix? Worked for me? Also adding a bit of tape to the back of the battery worked
well. wasnt hard tbh. Just take apart so u get inside the phone. take of all "screws?" so mainboard is loose. then take out the usb board and replace it.. .should be doable without taking out the entire mainboard. i just "tipped" it upwards so i got the cable thingy out... sry about my sucky english.. U need proper tools to do it. cheap tho but the "screws" is so damn small. And yes.. my phone still works perfect.
hmm thing i posten a guide to it somewhere.. give me a sec..

I guess there is not much chance of it getting better, huh?
So, before I send it to the shop, can I do a complete backup and wipe all data on the device, so that I can later restore it 1:1?
Thanks for any help

just do full nandroid backup... though you need streakmod recovery to do it...
and the screen happens like that is usually because the cable connectors or the ribbon is pretty much spoiled...
Do I need to have rooted device for that? I have the stock 2.2.

you just need to fastboot the recovery...
try multirecovery...
once you are into recovery... goto advanced > nandroid > full backup...
that should do it...
Yes you have to root so you can delete certain files... If not each time you boot your recovery is rewritten
Beautiful thing called a search wouldve gotten you all the info you needed

What about the Nero Backup&Restore that's supplied from Dell. How much does it miss in backup?
Root your device
Flash streakmod recovery
Make nandroid backup
Flash stock recovery
Flash stock rom

Now I have to think if it's worth it or whether to move on from my beloved Streak

actually the repair is the same as replacing the lcd to a new one... and streak has a history of expensive screen change...
Another question on the matter - the horizontal lines constantly change (now there are many more than on the photo above). Is it a failure in the screen itself or somewhere else? Or in some connection? I've tried disassembling my Streak and replugging the cables in hope I could at least get rid of those stripes.

usually that happen when the cable stripes that attached to the screen is getting loose... such as the glue used is no longer has its ability to retain the glue function....
in this case... well... best replace the lcd... just brace the price of replacing it...
I have other troubles with the Streak (resetting while in pocket etc) so I don't really want to invest much more in it. Also I'm worried whether the lines would actually be gone if I replaced the screen.
But if I could at least get rid of these stripes, streak could still have it's use even with malfunctioning left side of the screen (alarm clock, radio or similar - especially with the not-so-cheap craddle I have).
Can you sell me your Dell? I live in Vienna
I took the risk of buying your streak if you still have no other solution. I live to come. pleased to confirm my information. thank you.
I still use it, even with the broken screen. Sorry

Power button

Hello guys,
I have a LG G5 H850 since the release in the UK with Vodafone.
Last week, got an update On The Air to the v10c, but then my power button suddenly stopped working (or it is a big coincidence)
Symptoms:
- When the phone is off (battery removal), can't turn it on only with the power button. Only way is to plug it to the USB cable and it automatically restarts the phone (so weird.....)
- When the phone is on
--> lock screen activated, I can't unlock it by pressing the power button.
--> lock screen not activated, I can't lock the screen manually neither by pressing the button.
Also, the fingerprint sensor works perfectly fine....
I tried the following to fix it without any results:
- Hard reset (Factory reset) through the settings
- Safe mode to check if an app could be the reason...
- Wanted to try to flash to the factory v9h rom but could not find it unfortunately.
I tried to contact LG customer service but they answered me 3 days later with a pre-made answer for the G4
Anyone experiencing the same issue ?
Is it hardware or could it be software ?
Any other things I can try ?
Cheers
Lyn.
I doubt that this is a Software relatet Bug, otherwise it would turn on using the button once the battery was removed.
I guess you can't reach the download mode either, otherwise I would recommend you to flash the V10a kdz and Cross your fingers.
Swapping the phone in a local Store isn't possible? If so, try it.. You won't get a repaired phone in near future as the repair facilitys don't have the needed parts yet and you'll be stuck with no phone for a while.
Thank you for your (quick) answer Savoury.
Yes I have some time to loose tonight, I will give it a try to this older version if I manage to find the kdz.
Keep you updated !
Cheers
Power button / fingerprint scanner just stopped working on my LG G5 tonight.
Don't know if it's related or not, but it seemed like I had just wiped the phone clean with a Wet-Nap just prior to the button failure.
Weird, because I've been using Wet-Naps to frequently clean all of my phones for years,
and never had an issue before. I attached a pic of a Wet-Nap for reference below.
Also, when I go in to SETTINGS and search FINGERPRINT, nothing comes up in the SETTINGS for adding or removing fingerprints.

As of this morning:
-the "fingerprint" option has returned to my settings
-the fingerprint scanner will unlock and turn on the phone again after going through the setup process again
- the power button will NOT turn OFF the phone's screen anymore
Any explanations ????
Here's my answer I just posted on another thread. Hope this answers your question. I had the same problem. Nothing I can do with it now and it was out of warranty. Still works fine. Just a nuisance.
"Hi there just wanted to mention my experience from today. I bought a g5 with the power button not working but the fingerprint scanner did. I ordered a part from eBay and replaced it fine.
Then when I put it back together, it wouldn't turn on still. I took it apart about 3 times and tried to redo it until someone online mentioned to clean the gold pins with rubbing alcohol... Well I was getting ready to do that when I looked at the pins on the motherboard that makes contact with the power button part and.... A gold pin was missing. A drop or something must've made it fall out. I barely touched the one next to it and that one fell out. It had a hook that went to the underside of the metal thing and it popped out of my tweezers and I was never able to find the piece after that....
What a dumb design that they made. Those pins should not be there without being attached to the metal that's there"
I bought a refurb G5 and power button would only turn off the screen if pressed 4 or 5 times in a row. But I was able to fix it by simply taking a Q-tip with Isopropyl rubbing alcohol and pressing the button down while giving it a rough cleaning. What happens is that fingerprint oils and other gunk get stuck inside the button but after you clean it out with alcohol it was working good as new.
May take 3 cleanings total to restore it back to 100% performance. But certainly try that before swapping out any parts. This is a known issue with the power button on G5 and a cleaning with qtip and alcohol will fix the problem 90% of the time
I fixed this buy buying a new button. I installed it with a phone repair kit, a blow dryer, and a new button.
You can find them on amazon. You'll find a few videos online on how to do it. It's an easy repair.
The hardest parts are getting the phone apart (careful about breaking the thin material at the edge) and heating the glue to remove the existing plate covering the button. Consider buying a new plate for this button too, as you may damage the old one taking it off. You might need a high strength glue to reinstall the plate.
It works like new now, even though my phone GPS is toast regardless lol.
