[Q] Do I need to unroot my Thunderbolt to have it activated? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a Thunderbolt, and decided to root and try some ROMs out before deciding to make it my daily driver.
Now that I'm ready, I need to take it into Verizon to get a SIM card, and need to know if I need to unroot it, or if I can just flash a Sense ROM (doubt any Verizon employee would know the difference).
Thanks!

I had lots of problems when I tried activating while I was rooted. I had to unroot, lock the bootloader, and have a Verizon tech do a master reset on the phone to get it to activate.

Is there any way I can perform this master reset myself?

No. You have to be on the phone with the tech and do a factory reset at the same time. You should first try to go back to stock and activate it normally. You will need a new sim probably.

I took a rooted HTC TBolt that was loaned to me into the Verizon store a few weeks ago to have it activated. I did get a lecture about how the warranty was voided by rooting (it wasn't under warranty any longer anyway), but they activated it no problem.

I traded a Droid charge for my tbolt and called support and had it switched to my account. It was s-off and rooted and it worked just fine. I know its a little different than op but i think you will be okay.

I got a phone that was previously rooted and keeps rebooting

Ok so I had a international galaxy note that was a little beat up and I wanted a new evo lte. So I posted a ad on Craig's list to sell the note or trade for a new evo. A guy hit me up to trade today and we met and did a trade. Well the evo seemed to be working fine at first. But now it keeps freezing and rebooting. I did a factory reset to see if that solved the problem, and when the phone rebooted I saw a splash screen that said team winning. So I think the guy tried to root and messed something up. Is there a quick and easy way to flash or back to normal without bricking it ? or should I just claim it gets stolen, pay the deductible and get a new one? Any help on getting this back to stock would be great. It's in great condition but literally freezes and reboots every few mins.
Look in the dev section for the ruu.

Well what you are saying is insurance fraud and don't think you can talk about that here.
I would flash a stock ruu if I were you and test your luck. At the end of the day you bought/traded from a 3rd party that was not retail and have to deal with your own decisions.

See if.u have a recovery installed by turning the phone off and loading into the bootloader by pressing and holding power + volume down at the same time..if so I guess u could attempt to unroot with a stock ruu
Didn't mean to mention the insurance thing if talking about that is against the rules. My apologies. When I enter recovery the teamwin recovery screen comes up. Also at the top of the phone it says unlocked and tampered or something like that. So should I just try to flash the stock rui? And are the instructions in the dev section? Thanks for all the help guys. I have flashed stock roms on my og evo and my evo 3d but never a custom Rom.
You can't flash an RUU. Just flash a regular ROM and see how your phone works.

Ok. How would I be able to tell if the phone is rooted? Like I said when I go into recovery it says tampered and then unlocked. Does that mean it's rooted? And if so can I just load a stock rom on it ? or should I watch the how to uproot video and run the rui? Thanks in advance for the help.
Edit. I need to edit cause im not going to help you commit insurance fraud

Tampered means rooted, Unlocked means bootloader is unlocked. Just load another ROM zip on SD card and flash it in recovery after doing factory reset, cache wipe and davlik wipe. Might be OK after that.
Thanks for all of your help. I will try to run the ruu or flash another rom after work today. I really like the phone and hope that that fixes the problem. Thanks again.
Use TEP on that. I have done that with my past ebay/craigslist phones with no problem. I bought them and then they ended up having hardware issues a few weeks or months after I bought them. When Sprints' techs ask me where I got the phone, I tell them Craigslist or eBay. One of them told me "That's pretty smart" when I explained how I bought a used phone and put TEP on it.
One of the reasons I love TEP is they don't care where the phone comes from! :good: :good:
If you can verify the power cycling while a service tech is present you shouldn't even need to pay a deductible
I would flash the Superwipe than any ROM of your choice. I like Stock with Goodies.
Just get a ruu and run it from your pc. That will get you back to complete stock. Use it stock and see if any issues come back up. If they still do then worry about fixing it. But I think you should be good after ruu
Thanks everyone for the help
I installed and flashed mean Rom and that seems to have cleared up the problem. Thank you to everyone who helped. I think I'll run this rom and see how I like it. if I have any problems with it I'll just go get the ruu and run it. I read in the forums that I have to relock the bootloader before I can run the ruu. How do I relock it? Thanks again.
I believe it's from adb:
Fastboot oem lock
Stop me if im wrong, but from what I read you could only add TEP within 30 days of a newly upgraded line. So im not quite sure how you ended up adding TEP on a use phone without a line upgrade.

Whenever I have bought phones outright or from off the net they have always just transfered my insurance from the line that I activate the phone on. I had a Palm Pre and bought the og evo from Sprint for full price. They simply transferred the insurance. As soon as I activatedthis Lte evo I got a message saying my tep went up from 8 to 11 dollars. And when I talked to the rep she said that the insurance transfered over.
Unfortunately I have to take this phone to the repai center tomorrow. I loaded mean rom on it and it worked great for 20 mins. Then it got stuck on Chrome and the screen wouldn't turn off. I came home relocked the phone, ran the ruu, and unrooted the phone. Still randomly reboots and resets itself. The guy at the sprint store said if they can't repair it and there is no sign of physical damage or water damage they will just give me a new one.
Yeah insurance transfers to a new device even if it's not "new"

Thunderbolt SIM won't activate?

I recently sold my thunderbolt that was flashed and activated to page plus, all i changed when i activated it on page plus was the MIN and similar numbers like the addresses. The person tried to activate it with verizon but it didn't work and they tried 5 different sim cards and it still didn't work. What is the reason? I reset the phone back to factory setting but never got a chance to change any of the info back to normal like the MIN, PRL, etc. What I also did was change the EVDO settings to the [email protected]. Could any of this be a problem with it being activated back on verizon?
EDIT: I've looked and people talked about using RSD or putting the latest RUU back and it should be able to get activated easily? Wished i did this before so i wouldn't have to refund the buyer.
He will need to get a new Sim, call Verizon and tell them he needs a master reset. I had the same problem with my bolt because the guy I got it from was on page plus and not matter what they did it wouldn't show my phone number. It would help if you put it back to stock unrooted first.

Yea the buyer caught me off guard with the quick buy so I couldn't do what I wanted exactly before selling it so i took the dive anyways. But they told me they can't even get it to activate and tried 5 different SIMs. It wouldn't work at all. Is this what happened to you? I was looking around and there's RUU files that can put the thunderbolt back to factory settings including the flashed information. What does the Master Reset at verizon do? Basically like the RUU option right and not like a factory reset like i did?
I used an ruu to go back to stock. It took me almost a week to get a tech to do the reset. They don't like to do them because it is possible to get a bad ESN phone on the network this way. You need too let them know that you are rooted and also tell them that the phone was being used on another network before you got it. The warranty is void anyway so it doesn't matter if they know. Just talk to customer service and tell the tech you need a level 3 or a supervisor. Explain to them what is happening and they can help I promise.

Thanks! So the RUU won't get it back to be ready to activate on verizon just from that? You still need to ask a tech to do a master reset?

Yes because Verizon can only strip the page plus number from their system using a master reset. I only suggest going back to stock because they will ask you to do a factory reset. This is a part of their process and you have to do it.

Makes sense, thanks! I didn't think it would be a problem going back to verizon since page plus shares the same network. Anyways the buyer decided to ask verizon to send a new 4g sim card and she'll try again later in the week. I'll go ahead and tell her if it doesn't work explain to them that the phone needs a master reset since it was used on another network. Hopefully it'll be smooth.
Np. It should work unless Verizon black listed the phone.

Hmm.. The buyer got a new sim card and tried again but said it still didn't activate.. Apparently they even resetted it and it still didn't work. ESN is clean and I had it on page plus so it's not black listed

HELP Replacement phone coming! Should I re-lock and flash to stock??

I attempted to activate a rezound with viperez to one of my lines at the Verizon store. And the guy actually did it for me with no questions asked. It can get data and can receive texts but the phone identity says unknown. After this I went home and flashed a stock rooted ics vigor ROM in hopes of activation. After several calls to customer service and 4G technical support. The techs are sending me a new Rezound. I will get my replacement first before they get this one back. However..
This rezound is s-off, unlocked, and rooted. Will they deny me service or charge me the full phone price if they see this? I heard they really don't check and destroy them as soon as they arrive. I've also heard that due to the FCC Verizon can't deny my warranty if it's modified. They will just frown upon you and not recommend it.
If you have actually read this far, I really would appreciate your advice! As the replacement will be here overnight tonight. I need to know my course of action
Thanks

It's always best to relock the phone and they can if they want charge you a fee for third party software on the phone. With that said I have never heard anyone say they was charged that for sending a rooted phone back after getting a replacement.

Help fix 4G :(

Im going to explain this problem in a depth as i can.
I am s-off'd via jtagged, rooted and have twp recovery. I am on newest radio running NOS M7 v2.0.3
I can only connect to 3G for some reason with it reading eHRPD.
i do not know if it was reading this before i started the process of rooting since i never turn the phone completely on once i got it back.
So after some reading and advice i downloaded LTE on off to force 4G
It worked but at the cost of losing my mobile network causing me to not be able to make calls or send out text but i have 4G i can get on the internet.
Atm i am plagued with having 3G and service or using 4G w/o service... and this is a problem.
Also while on 4G it reads RSRP if that helps.
Idk if this is a hardware problem from me getting my device jtagged (which would suck since that means im stuck with it) or if it can be fixed.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated since im getting annoyed

In any case, I would RUU back to stock, including kernel, and see if I get 4G. Make sure 4G is available in your area....?

I had the same problem when I got my phone back. Took it back to Verizon and got a new phone. I tried everything and nothing worked. It is like something happened to the radio. Tried to flash a new one nothing. Still haven't heard back from mtv on trying to get a refund.

Sigh thats something i wanna avoid so Ill just have to stay stuck until moonshine comes out. I really like sense 5 and I don't wanna go back to 4+... Then I'll get a replacement I guess.
As far as RUU to stock and seeing if I was on LTE I already did all that. I was almost looking into build.props but I assumed that wouldnt work either. So guess I'm just stuck on 3G unless it randomly wanna come back which I doubt unless somebody comes up with a solution besides just getting a replacement.

That's more than likely not necessary if ur just getting a new SIM card. U shouldn't have an issue even if ur s off and unlocked. SIM cards r free.

Correct they are free, but the guy I tend to see at the Verizon store always seems to launch that hboot screen everytime I go in there. He did when I had the SIM card swapped earlier in the year as it would disconnect from my network several times a day. So I just want to be on the safe side.
I had my SIM card replaced twice on my resound and both times went to the store without relocking the bootloader or anything. Didn't have any issues. They programmed the new card and I was on my merry way. Maybe call em first and without giving any of ur account information ask if u can get a new SIM card if uv rooted ur phone. It would suck to go thru that process if it's not necessary but I can certainly understand the better safe than sorry approach. The phone call would definitely be worth the time though imo.

So I got the issue resolved without a new SIM card. So here is a combo of things I did to resolved the issue. I have everything in the link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338810
I think it was resolved after I flashed my radio and then I went back to stock just in case I have any more issues in the next week. As if I do I will go back to the Verizon store and swap out my phone. But I'd rather be S-ON in case that happens and be that way for a bit. Plus I wanted to test the S-ON for future purposes of in case I needed to get back there I knew how to.

[Q] If you have a rooted phone, can you use the One Up program for an upgrade?

I was just wondering will Sprint let you upgrade to a new device with the One Up Program (or with their standard upgrade program) if you have a rooted phone? I have an EVO 4G LTE rooted with CM 10.1 and my upgrade is a few months away. Did Sprint give anyone problems? Or do they not care?
Thanks

My store (in Orange County, CA) is a pain in the butt with the phone being in a hacked state, if you can hide the Unlocked bootloader state, you will almost be certain to be good to go.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully sprint doesnt give me any problems.
The store here didn't care when I traded in my rooted and custom ROM Evo 3D
I've never seen em give a damn about root and custom ROMs, after having my screen replaced 3 times and speaker twice (last speaker got me a whole new bezel, but I remained S-off, so I know they didn't swap out. YMMV. If there's more than one store close, I'd just go do it with root, if they give you any guff, flash stock and hit the other one.

You can always just RUU the phone and use regaw leinads tool to set it back so the bootloader looks like it is s-off!
I've traded in rooted phones at my local corporate store and they never cared, even when I told them it was rooted.
