Greetings,
I don't have the Galaxy Note (yet), but before I pick one up, I've got a few questions about the available ROMS.
1. Which ROM floating around out there is closest to Stock ICS? (I'd be coming from a Galaxy Nexus.)
2. Are there any ROMS that get rid of all the Samsung Custom Apps? Not just TouchWiz, I'll get rid of that with ADWLauncher, but all the customizations that Samsung has done to Messenger, Calendar, etc.
I'm eager to get the Note, but I want to make sure it's easily "De-Samsung-ified" first.
Thanks!

Thanks, That does look good, but I'm a bit apprehensive when I see Beta in the title. Is this what you're using? Can you post screenshots of the Messenging and Calendar apps? The Samsung customizations of those really bother me. I know it's nitpicking, I'm a bit anal with my devices...
It comes shipped with the Samsung apps, there is an aosp app ad on within the roms ota feature.
There isn't a true aosp ROM for the note... Yet.
Thanks @studacris @briand.mooreg for the suggestion. Are there any others, I'm looking for a stable, non-beta ROM to use at first, but once I get confortable with the device, I'll play around with it more.
It's only a beta by name alone. because we, the collective, have much more in store for it.
It's stable as a table.
Once we get official ICS, devs are gonna go ALL out on the ROMs.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
I think until we get source for ICS, any ROM you see available will claim to be an Alpha or a Beta (at developer's decision).
The reality of the situation is that all of the i717 ICS ROMS are based on a leaked ICS build, not something official.

When the source comes out, will it be posted online like Google posts the images for the Nexus devices? I ask because I'm just looking for as Pure an ICS experience as I can get.
I don't even have the Note yet, but I flashed my Galaxy Nexus to AOSP ICS tonight and I'm a bit eager to dive into Android experimenting and maybe eventually cooking up a ROM myself.
Thanks.
try out dagr8s rom its pretty awesome def with the tablet mod
Dude thuer all beta or alpha we have no source codes to make a rc ics rom yet but its coming don't worry and most ics roms out right now are very stable and very nice don't be afraid lol go buy a note and Ice it out

Maybe some devs are just blown away by the options - or maybe they don't think this device is that popular? Blow them away by voting and showing how in demand their services are - and for what!
There is a lot of variety out there right now- and with the official ICS leak these things SHOULD be much more possible, so let me ask you what flavor of ICS do you want the most?
All examples are from vibrant because I have tested all of them on my old phone.. many of the more popular devices have them all.
Ports/official:
Slim ICS - Clean, Simple, and fast - the google way - as barebone aosp as it gets.(Can you say a 75mb download?)
Something like MIUI - A feature heavy nearly total redesign of Android - everything about this type of rom is different - but most of you probably know that. Easily themable in every aspect. Some of the features are here(don't forget it takes advantage of all the new features of ICS)
AOSP(Android open source project) - Either official CM9 or pure AOSP - the stock experience without our blessed "SenseUI" we all have come to love/hate - CM9 of course has some extra features.. and is also easily themable.
AOKP(Android open kang project) - Much like a feature rich version of CM9, while still aiming at a stock experience - if you want to know the differences click here(or check some of the features here)
SenseUI+ - Do you just want modified Senseui with some tweaks? Maybe some root, crt displays, power menu options.. just a stock+ experience? If so go to the development section, it has only been a week yet some good roms seem to be popping up all over(*cough* signature *cough*).
I like stock - HTC and Tmobile decide what I should use, and that's the way I like it! The most I could ask for, if I was feeling risky, is to get a little bit of root. Maybe.
Gingerbread - Damn this new radio! My battery sucks! Life sucks! How dare they leak a rom that isn't even finished! Those @ss&*#(s!
I'm gonna buy a new phone - You guys are noobs, I'm gonna buy a new phone!
If I missed an option, I'm sorry.. send me a PM and I'll see if I can add it to the list- but these are some of the choices out there, maybe help out devs and the potential ones alike by shouting at them all in one place!(rather than in their threads- I'm pretty sure they hate that.)

I tried AOKP on my vibrant.. unfortunately that phone just can't compare to this one.

And yet there is no vote for MIUI? What gives?
I haven't seen that sense4 has enough improvements over 3.6, and then there is the fact that many of those features were integrated into ICS anyways.. is it worth the slowdown?
Now Miui on the other hand has some really original features..
I voted on MIUI after posting. Had it on my HD2 and couldn't wish for anything better!

I've been bouncing between the 2 senseless roms, and I like both of them so far so I vote for anything without sense.
I have cm9 nexus on my HD2 and still cheat on my amaze with it sometimes.

AOSP/AOKP are the same .
AOKP just builds on AOSP. Once you have one you work on the other no ?

My vote went to AOSP and AOKP. I don't care which...I just want one of them!
CM9. Would love to play around with Sense 4.0, though.
I want my Amaze to look and run similar to the Galaxy Nexus.
AOSP!!.. Pleaaaase!..
Sense 4 could be on fire and I'd pee in the other direction to avoid even 1 drop quenching a single flame

Well since 65%(so far) of everyone who voted went with aosp you know your work there will be appreciated!
I'm really surprised more people haven't put in their opinion!
Well I would like an aosp before anything, then bring speed Rom over to it

The Ruby needs to be blessed with any variant of ICS AOSP. We've seen enough Sense lately.

If you would like you could start working on miui i want to dedicate my time to AOSP
Hi,
coming from HTC Sensation we had a rom where devs took the HTC ICS base - removed (almost) all HTC Sense parts and replaced them with stock AOSP. The result was a very stable rom that looked, felt and behaved like AOSP without the need for devs to manually fix drivers and other issues.
My question is: Is this possible on Samsung roms? Remove TW and replace (almost) completely with AOSP counterparts? I don't just mean theming the rom, but basically turning stock Samsung into (almost) AOSP/Google.
Sorry if this question has been asked (probably) years ago - just wondering.
HyperGalaxy is probably what your looking for much like hypersensation & VI on sensation, thinks it's just changed to the latest OTA jellybean as base.
Keep meaning to try it but have got fond of paranoid rom & cm10 features and haven't had the time.

exactly, VI was my Sensation rom. I'd love something like that. Will look into HyperGalaxy. Thanks.
if you would go to the dev section and read the rom names you will find the answer to your question.. All the roms that are AOSP have AOSP written in their names. like the supernexus rom, hypergalaxy, liquid jellybean, and all the other AOSP roms. there are also AOKP, CM9/X, and PA roms for this phone...you can find all of them in the dev sections
thanks for asking this. i too came from the sensation and was on Hypernonsense. will check out hypergalaxy

Well, too bad, it seems like latest 1.0.2 version includes touchwiz now . I may still try it.
U realize that touchwiz is much more than a launcher? If u want to replace launcher just download another one from market and use it

any ROM that is AOSP-themed like hypersensation for the S3? HyperGalaxy is not, still using stock theme. CodecROM's theme is only half-AOSP and it looks fugly
For a completely AOSP ROM try SuperNexus. Its brilliant.

I'd love aosp. Waiting for mem leak fix first though. That's why I asked about something with Samsung base.
I’ve been curious as to why development and rom builds have been so slow to come to the Verizon Galaxy Note II? I look at other carriers and see that they have a more extensive collection of ROMS available and was wondering why?
The reason for thisi is our devs have currently been working out keeping unlocked bootloaders on the latest update for some unfortunate people, And we are just getting started with the roms. FOr the best roms, let the devs work on their own pace.

I would have to agree. I've been using Clean ROM because I love the 5x6 Launcher. Thanks for the heads up though. I have been tied to the fourms every day just browsing waiting for new ROM releases.

From past experience, I've had a phone with many roms but most of them had their share of bugs which drove me away. I have used Scott's roms before the note 2 and his attention to detail and simplicity is unsurpassed, we are very fortunate to have him. We also are lucky to have CM builds pumping out as my former device waited over a year for just the beta.

Really most OTA ROMS are not all that different.. Sure some have more options etc.. The real fun comes when AOSP is stable..
We just got official CM nightly's as of yesterday.. While there are a few things to work out with kinks here and there, the real fun has just begun...

It will only improve. Verizon was late to the party with their variant and locked out the bootloader. Nobody is going to develop much on a device with locked bootloader. Also, it is true that devs have been busy helping us noobs.
I didn't think development would even be this fast. This is the best phone on the best carrier, so I assume development will continue. I am sure many people have a GS3 already, so won't be moving to this platform.
Speed up development by donating to a dev.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Didn't someone just release a mod that a allows cross carrier roms?! Not to mention aosp is finally getting solid. Patience is a virtue, things are taking off.
I personally think the development on this device has been great. Better than I expected really, given the way Verizon tried to chase away users from this device with stupid things like the branding on the home button. At the end of the day I'm just happy with what we have. Could have been a lot worse without Adam.
If your that bored flash some N7105 base roms. Just don't derp and flash the radios for the other carriers. I am running SkyNote right now.

I think one of the reason why is lack of stock functionality. The varieties of AOKP, Baked, CM, AOSP, Miui roms have been extremely popular and successful on other Google devices(varieties of these roms account for more than 50% of entire roms), but apparently not many people demand those roms on Galaxy Note2 because of lack of stock functionality...such as SPen, page buddy, other good motion functions, and etc, etc. I used to be a huge fan of AOKP roms while I was owning Galaxy Nexus, but after switching to GNote2, I never looked back. I wanted more of Samsung experience rather than Google.

I agree with this. I want to keep most of the stock functionality with the ability to mod. Hence why I love beans rom.
** meant to say ROMs and not mods in the title
Hello,
I am one of the few that actually like touchwiz but i also like being able to change roms so i was not really into a bunch of the roms i was trying out until i flashed the flappjaxxx UCLF6 rom. but i wanted to update and it looks like he has stopped working on that project. the rom in am on is IMM76D.UCLF6+FJMod-Build_12
The key parts to why i like this rom are the month view calendar shows text instead of just colored blocks like AOSP month view. and I do like a lot of the contact functionality like long press to send contact info via SMS (instead of a conatact book file) and contact book group messaging. I am assuming this is TouchWiz functionality.
anyway wanted to see if anyone had made a rom similar to the flappjaxxx one that wasn't just a themed or graphics wrapped version of the same rom.
thanks,
nate
Indeed, those are TouchWiz features.
Bigfau has black star
Nunhugger has novena
Both are TouchWiz based ics Roms.
Both offer added features while maintaining the features of TouchWiz.
both of those developers along with myself are on of the development team that flappjaxx is a part of as well.
Flapp is taking some time off developing to pursue his professional career.
And now you're in luck, AT&T just released a jellybean update of TouchWiz, Bigfau and nunhugger will be working to update black star to this new firmware.
Thanks! What rom do you endorse personally?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
I personally like novena, but I was running aosp builds of another of our team members Rom "gubment cheeze" then hopped onto novena to help out and test.
Black star was being developed at the same time as cheeze and at that time I wasn't wanting TouchWiz so I kinda passed that one by,
but as I said in my previous, that's being updated to the jelly bean TouchWiz firmware that was dropped Thursday. So that's what I'd be keeping my eyes on.
You rule, this is the exact information I was looking for
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Yes. This is the information I was looking for.. Do you think that any of these roms thas comming out will have pieces of sg4 on it like the ultimate rom for n7000

Curiosity poll. Also to help me choose my next ROM, since official 4.3 is near.
For all y'all fun people using a Note II-- have you gotten the best mileage out of an AOSP ROM (CM, AOKP, AOSPA etc.), a modified Stock ROM (Jelly'Beans', etc.) or just plain old Samsung 4.1.2? I put AOSPA on my Note II as soon as I got it and have stuck with it mostly, but the prevalence of stock-based ROMs means there must be a point. Does TouchWiz actually bring anything to the table?
Interested to see what anyone says. Thanks!
