[Q] Polaris Office missing from SGS2 ICS? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Just wanted to confirm something - I recently did the official Kies update to ICS on my Telstra SGS2. All good for the most part.
I only just noticed though, Polaris Office is missing from the Telstra ICS ROM. Is this correct? Have other peeps noticed it's absence?
I think VLingo is gone too - but I dont miss that.
Regarding Polaris... if i wish to restore it - is it as simple as restoring from one of my old Titanium Backups?
Thanks for any help.

Should work OK restoring from backup, if you find it doesn't, you'll need to extract the two lib files from the package & copy them over to /system/lib.
If that doesn't work, you'll need to find the apk from somewhere & reinstall it (also copy the lib files over after install). There are threads on here with details of this if you do a Google search (might even turn up using XDA search )

Thanks for the quick reply mate. Im not missing Polaris too bad - the only reason I noticed it missing was because it was no longer an option for reading PDFs. Ive since picked up another PDF reader, so i might just wait for the Play Store lauch of Polaris (if it aint too pricey).
Thanks again.

Awesome, thanks heaps for the help MistahBungle. Ill let you know how i go.
Cheers.

if my memory is correct, you you will find Polaris office on Darky OTA,
install from market Darky OTA and check it up...

Or you could try Kingsoft office for a free office reader/editor if you don't want to pay for Docs to Go QuickOffice etc..

does kingsoft reads .docx?
does it stays on the same page of the doc you're reading after you press the home button and goes back to the apps again?

Why not just try it. It would probably be quicker than waiting for an answer, and it's a free app I believe

Samsung ebook reader for the Honeycomb 3.2 builds KK4

After the Honeycomb 3.2 ROM versions were leaked, a lot of people were disappointed that the Ebook reader did not work anymore on the customized ROMs. It was the same for my own custom ROM, the Ganbarou V0.4.
I played around a little bit and could finally get the Ebook reader to work. And even better, it is no longer a system application that you need to flash with the CWM recovery. Now you can just install the application as a normal user application.
To install the ebook reader, download the ebook.apk from my apps section. Copy the file to your tablet. Open your file manager on the tablet, and double click on the ebook.apk file to install it.
But I have to say, I am a little bit disappointed, because the Ebook reader has problems with the German fonts. See on the screenshots on my website post.
Download as usual from the apps section of my website or direct from this post. MD5 checksum is 9db1d18b8013e02deeaaeb1da2f0ca84 for the apk file and d1127f7c6bf9704e57f33d7fbd0edefc for the ZIP file.
I found the IMPORT function caused an FC immediately. Could be cos I'm on Taboonay ROM for my Acer Iconia... Shame but much thanks for effort! I was looking forward to making this my one and only reader prog.

problem here after 3.2 update. I tried to install your e-book app but this didn’t work (gt 7510 stock rom) “message: app not installed.
Do you have any suggestions ?

You need to remove the (not working) ebook.apk from the systems/app folder before you can install this version. You can remove it either from the original ROM ZIP file and then flash this changed ROM again (no data loss usually) or use e.g. ROOT-EXPLORER to delete the ebook.apk.

the Sammy's eBook app crashes on me all the time (SGT 10.1). It is slow and is not as smooth as the Ipad2's ibook. When I flick through the pages, after a while it would freeze up and revert back to the library screen. It is very frustrating. If Sammy wants to beat Apple, they need to step up their game!

That's why I prefer Aldiko. Free from the market, smooth, and with Aldiko Sync I can even read the same book on my phone or on my tablet.
Yes Aldiko is pretty good. I wish it had highlighter option like Sammy eBook app!

Hi,
I have been looking for this Ebook Reader for a while, I posted a thread on xda as well, I come across your post and somehow ended up here...
Here is my question, can I install this ebook reader on Gingerbread? coz I have Galaxy Note and have installed all the best recommended book readers but nothing like the Honeycomb stock reader...

I checked your app on Overcome 10.1 series 230 ROM, and have some problems with "polish characters" displayed as squares. Well it seems that we are missing some part of this reader. Too bad cuz I find this reader as best one.
Hope some day You find the way to fix it.
On Samsung Galaxy Note with 4.0.3 works good
But there are awful shadows on top right part of the screen while sliding.
I think this problem not hard to fix... but how
Hello everyone, came across this thread while looking for the Ebook.apk
Now, I have the Sammy Tablet 10.1, which I just installed the ICS, it's a two edged sword, I lost swype and the worst was loosing Ebook.
Now, I've installed the apk that BeeGee posted, which, does work, but...
If I try to import a book or pdf, it crashes
If I open a pdf from file manager, it imports it, but it it doesn't 'show' the pages. I can even highlight, but I don't know what I'm highlighting, lol.
Is there a build for the ICS. I'm considering going back to the Gingerbread, just to get the Ebook back, I loved it.
Any help would be rewarded with cake.
I believe that the ebook app required components from the touchwiz file manager, which was why import funxtion does not work.
I wonder if there is a work around.

TouchWiz eBook.apk

Anyone know if it can be ported to CM9 Kang? I have tried several times to install the apk manually and even the flashable zip available on Task's page, but everytime I try to open it, it says "unfortunately, eBook has stopped." I also installed the same apk on my Galaxy Nexus with Stock ICS and it worked fine, except for when I tried to import books it gave me the same message and quit. I hope somebody can help me out with this, its the best ebook app I've ever used, and no other reader is satisfactory. Lol. I've included the ebook.zip below in case someone can tweak it and help me out. It's the flashable zip, the apk can be found by unzipping the file. Let me know if anybody has any ideas. Thanks guys
Use Aldiko bookreader instead. Its the same app, just some lil differences. Works exactly the same aswell.

I tried that one too and got the same result: 'unfortunately, Ebooks has stopped' when I try to import. I think the Import books option needs to be edited to work for ICS.
Alot of apps dont work yet on ics. This is probb one of them.

Indeed. i guess I'll just have to wait until Samsung releases touchwiz for ICS and get it then. Thanks for everyone's feedback. I'll just stick with 3.2 HC until official CM9 is released.
Yeah got the same problem as jman391.. crashes when importing books..
very sad because aldiko is soooo slooooow with pdf files!

[Q] Which app opens the embedded User Manual?

Which app opens the embedded User Manual?
I uninstalled some system apps with Titanium Backup and I don't know which one I should reinstall.
Edit: upload a screenshot
Thanks.
Regards.
This is just a guess as Im not sure what kind of file it is but Adobe Reader? I installed a new ROM yesterday and had to reinstall Adobe Reader again to be able to read some files like a manual
I did try Adobe Reader already, but it just gives me an error like "The file path is not valid"...
I've never seen that on my phone.

Me neither, on 2 devices and one was carrier-locked.
Doesn't float my boat anymore - I think I've reached "experiencied noobie" status - but a damn useful app to have.
Yes, this Manual comes with some firmwares (CSC actually), but not all.
By the way, if there is anyone interested, here is the apk.
From a quick look, it does appear to be looking for a PDF, in /system/etc/Manual do usuario.pdf
Yes, you are right: it's a PDF and Adobe Reader can handle it. But, in order to work again, I was forced to reinstall the whole CSC... Certainly it is Adobe plus something else that I uninstalled
Thank you all of you.
Regards.

Req: Polaris Office from ICS?

Hi all.
When I flashed the UK version of ICS, it included Polaris Office.
I went back to HC 3.2, and I'm now on ICS US version (did it using Kies).
Is there a way to get the Polaris Office. apk and install it on my tab (7510)?
Thanks!
ETA: Mods: If this request isn't kosher, please delete.
Thanks.
Not sure if it works (or why you would want polaris office anyways, Stock HC came with quickoffice) but here it is.

it crashes only when you try to open the application. If you want to read some file only, you can open the file with some file explorer and then choose to open with the polaris office. On CM9 it works but it's quite uncomfortable.

Sumsung TouchWiz eBook

So I ended up needing Samsung stock TouchWiz ebook, going thru all the posts and various apk files try, none worked perfectly, you either get force close, or import crashes (yes, someone posted work around, but a little pain), and some said it does not highlights the text..etc...
This also goes back to my other post "possible to port TouchWiz to JB/CM10/CM9 ROM", i believe this is the biggest issue to make all mini Samsung Apps to work for any other ROMs.
We all have love & hate for Samsung TouchWiz, I just wished that someone come up TouchWiz port that can be installed to any ROM, but i guess it is rather complex to do that since TouchWiz buried under all the touchwiz framework, so must be quite challenging to extract and port to other ROMs.

I was in exact same situation. Today I tried "Cool Reader" (not the best name i know) and I think it's the best reader I've ever used so far. Of course your needs could differ but that app is incredibly customizable. Try it if u haven't yet.
I have never been able to get eBooks to work perfectly outside of TouchWiz. The biggest roadblock is that you need My Files and I believe that depends on TouchWiz.
If you could get that ported over I'm sure ebooks would work.

yeap. you probably right about MyFiles app, and it is system app, even if I tried to drop the file system/app folder and gave correct permission, it still crashes on reboot. so like many other small samsung apps probably depends on touchwiz framework..
Did you already tried Moon Reader? For me it's the best reader so far.
The only one that comes close to being the best is Aldiko, but I paid to have TouchWiz and I want what I want.

agreed - Moon Reader is the only reader I've been using for a while now... frequently updated, customizable - great app. :good:
I want the eBook that I had on the Tab before the ICS update. It doesn't work anymore. I have MyFiles, but eBook won't start now no matter what. I tried Cool Reader and Aldiko, but still like the eBook better. Is it possible to get it to work? How about Readers Hub? I can't install that one either. It's supposed to be a replacement of eBook. Please, help.
You can still install the ebook app through the samsung apps if you are on stock ics.
And what if someone(me)) can't install Samsung Apps?
No, I can't. As a matter of fact, eBook is still installed and has an icon for it in the app drawer. But if I tap it, it just brings up the Samsung Apps app with eBook page. If I choose "get it", it gives me some error, that it can't be downloaded. I'm stock, BTW.
Can anybody check if their eBook app is functioning on stock ICS?
The other question, can somebody upload Readers Hub here? And will it work on our Tabs?

Have you tried flushing the cache or even deleting the data for the Samsung Apps app?
I just recently did a factory reset and the only trouble I had was with my password but otherwise ebooks downloaded and installed just fine.
If you have root I can just pull my ebooks/odex files and send them over to you tomorrow.
I appreciate it, serosis. But I'm stock, not rooted. I'll try to delete cache and see if it helps at all. I tried Aldiko and Cool Reader and even Toshiba book reader app. I like Sammy's better.

What exactly is happening that stunts the download process?
Maybe a screenshot or two.
Ok, so as I said, I tap eBook app, it launches Samsung Apps (instead of eBook app). If I click "download", it says "processing failed". See the screenshots.
I tried to delete cache of eBook and Samsung Apps. I started the Tab by holding vol up button and deleted cache from there too. I wanted to uninstall the eBook app, but that's not an option (same as some other "system" apps).
I'm stock ICS, never been rooted.
