I really want to use CM7 but my primary use is reading B&N and Kindle content. Until there is a way to read books and magazine subs in CM7 that utilizes the B&N reader I'm locking in to a rooted stock version. The market version of the B&N reader doesn't cut it.

I responded dual boot but that isn't exactly correct. I started with CM7 from SD Card which I still use occasionally but primarily I use stock 1.4.2 rooted (with AW's 4.6) and I am eagerly awaiting CM9 - likely the SD Card version because of minimal risk....
Rooted 1.4.0. With B&N apps. I read mostly with the Kindle app, so I think MIUI is in the near future.

I'm running cm7 until the new kernel is up and running, then I'm switching to cm9, I had it on my nook for a while, but went back to cm7 for the stability. CM9 rocks and i can't wait to put it back on.

I'm surprised that more people aren't running Cm9. it must be just me in that once I tried out ICS j couldn't stand the non-tablet-optimized gingerbread anymore. Sure its stable but I just can't stand the horrible tablet widget support, the ugly-ish UI elements and the older features without Holo themes. I guess I'm a really picky user, but to me Cm9 even in its current state is pretty much perfect. Also a rip for anyone who is running Cm9, if you set the processor to run at a consistent 1Ghz then the whole OS runs SO much smoother. Also I've actually gained battery life since switching to the faster clock speed. Been using it like this for about 3 weeks and its much much improved.

I'm willing to bet a lot of the people saying they use CM7 are using bootable SDcard version. This is perceived as a "safe" way as you are not modifying the internal memory and doing so seems to scare people (despite the fact that this thing is pretty difficult to brick).
Also, IIRC Netflix isn't working on CM9 (I cancelled my Netflix last year when they went pants on head retarded so I can't test). Netflix is a pretty popular service though so I'm sure a lot of people want to retain this functionality.
Edit: I'm sure once CM9 is more "stable" and there is an sdcard version people will switch to it.
Netflix works to the point I can hear the show but not see it for me on cm9. I'm fairly sure that devs will solve the issue when ducati is fixed.

I did try out the sdcard version of cm7 at first, to take a test run, but then i switched to the emmc version and have no complaints. Alot of people are worried about voiding their warranty, but i got over that quickly. I even brought my nook into bn that i used to work at the other day to replace my broken charger and the manager saw my nook and thought it was really cool and now he wants to root his too.

To add to this a bit, I think people are simply not aware of how relatively easy it is to restore the nook tablet to stock conditions.

Yeah, I've never used an SD booting method, took the plunge early with the Cm7 that was only available for internal. Was sick of the stock OS and I wanted ICS. I tried for about 2 months straight to find a theme/launcher/Widgets/app configuration that suited me. But I just couldn't. Now I'm on Cm9 and completely content. I'm so used to using internal that being afraid of it seems weird to me.

I've never booted into the stock OS :smug:
CWM sdcard, booted into CWM, mounted to move CM7 zip over and then flashed. About a week or two later I flashed CM9 and I'm happy with it. I use my Xoom for most video watching/graphic intensive games but the Nook is a great alternative when I want to be a bit more mobile and read books/comic books (xoom is **** in portrait mode).
Having ICS on 3 out of 4 devices is nice (the 4th is a bit of a relic and doesn't have the hardware to properly support ICS).
I'm running cm7 right now, mostly reading , but occasionally watching an MLB game streaming on the Tablet. I try out every new version of the ICS builds, but end up back with cm7 after a few days. The DEV's are doing a great job, and this is a fine Tablet.

I guess I'll start with a little background.
I started on Android with a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (I know, awful choice) coming from a Nokia 5800 which was, at the time, a very good phone. After the fiasco with x10, I got an LG Optimus One, which worked fine for me, but it's limited internal storage made me reconsider my decision. By then, I had already bought the Nook Tablet, which I rooted hours after I got it, then had the (limited) Android experience with homecatcher and go launcher and stuff. I finally was forced to buy another phone, I got mugged, so I bought the Motorola Defy+.
I was searching every forum for a stable-ish CM9 for the Nook and I finally decided to go for CM7 which is a lot more stable, but I was worried about bricking the Nook or doing something to it that would make me unable to sell it at some point. I found a way to boot from SD and then I finally leaped. CM7 it was and WOW has it blown my mind. I really like everything about CM and now I'm just waiting for CM9 to get out of alpha.
After this experience, I had to go for CM9 on my phone so, after a lot of trouble rooting it (because of a new BL version) I finally could and now I'm as happy as I could be with my Defy+, it's amazing! So, that's the story, maybe a little too long for... what was the question? xD

Im looking to see some feedback from regular users who have attempted and are using the second alpha.
How usable is it really?
To be honest, webos, while is wonderful, with the lack of apps its quite not useable. i mean, i enjoy the pad, but it does not pull me to spend a lot of time with it like my smartphone did.
so.. How is android at this develoment stage?

a few of the hardware features are better, but i stuck with A1 mainly because of the stability, and most of the problems is has can be corrected yourself using apps and doing some minor tweaks.
i did check it out, but from my own experience, A1 was better.
Currently, I spend more time in webOS because my TP is more of a toy right now. I don't need or use it for work. CM alpha for me has been rather stable, with only a minor WiFi glitch that is solved by turning off the radio, and turning it back on. All my usual apps run fine, with no more instability than on my phone. Hope this helps.

alpha 2.1 is MORE stable than alpha 1. They fixed some of the sleep issues (but it still has some) but most importantly,alpha 2 charges properly from the touchstone dock. compared to webos,alpha 1 is a tossup. the problem with webos is not the apps. The webos version that came on my touchpad wasterribly buggy alpha level software. The new version that just came out mayhelp that though. Alpha 2 inky opinion has an edge over webos (at least the version i was using) as a few of the most critical bugs are fixed. you WILL have to do some tweaking though to get it working more or less right. If you expect to throw cm7 inane have a perfect experience on first boot,your going to be dissapointed.
I haven't had any 'problems' with A2.1 - sometimes it doesn't want to resume from sleep after a long time but - whatever - it's an alpha build - the speed and usability of it far outweigh any minor problems it may still have
Haven't had to do any tweaking other than personal preferences (I use Launcher Pro instead of ADW) etc.....sync'd Titanium Backup from my phone to Dropbox and then sync'd it to my TouchPad and was able to restore all the apps/games etc from my phone.
Oh and it plays Plants vs Zombies really well too

I I have had no issues with this build and have had no problems with any apps I have placed on it. I boot into webos seldom as cm7 does everything I want to do. My latest quadrant score was 3561 running at 1.7 GHz with the governor set to performance. I would recommend this alpha to anyone who can find their way around a command line (for instillation). It can only get better from here.

make sure you use alpha 2.1 and not alpha 2a

Do you have any issues rebooting to alpha 2? I have had to restore to alpha 1 twice in order to reboot to cm7 .
Weird thing is since my first time rebooting to web os from cm7, I could not reboot or flash alpha 1 or 2 without a boot loop.
Only thing that has worked is restoring alpha 1 ,which thankfully I had backed up, and then adding alpha 2.

Alpha 2.1 has been nothing but stellar for me. For an Alpha build, this is amazing!
Google Docs FCs on me. Oh well! I mainly use my TP for reading books (Kobo reader does an amazing job for .epub files).
Ive not had the sleep of death yet, i just use the wall charger and charges perfectly and my battery is amazing. Nothing to complain about so far.
Alpha 2.1 is superb, a couple of apps force closing but apart from that it is awesome...
It dual boots, so you will still have WebOS, if you dislike Android on your TP - remove it...

I'd say it's very stable as a daily driver. I also get a few force closes here and there but nothing too debilitating.I've themed and downloaded multiple apps and they all breeze through pretty quickly. Emulators, YouTube HQ, Vevo HQ, all work pretty well. Ironically I had never opened my TouchPad until yesterday but the ten minutes I had to use it I hated WebOS. Seems ok but stuck and I hate the little dots when I press. Only thing I couldn't get to work was a 720p MKV on MVideoPlayer but I assume some sort of graphics drivers have yet to be ironed out and I can live without. WiFi works great and I was surprised that even the camera worked for Skype, etc. At $99 this is definitely the deal of the year for me. giving my Nook Color to my daughter.
Try mobo video player from the market. I have had very good results with various formats.BTW, the little dots on the screen in webos can be turned off in advanced settings.
Overall, cm7 a2.1 is stable and very fast. In answer to the question above on rebooting, I have not tried alpha 2. With alpha 2.1, I have never had any trouble switching between webos and cm7. Just remember to set the os you want to boot in the moboot settings when you first start up or boot and hold the volume up key to boot into webos.

Just loaded it last night finally after fighting with Win7 and drivers to get it installed, but so far its great. I am having a charging issue though, so still trying to figure that one out. The only app so far that hasn't worked is WeatherBug which I really miss, but I can live without if needed.
Can anyone tell me if the TP on CM7A2 can handle all the games on the android market? For example games from glusoft like NovaHD2.
Can it play hd videos using flash through the browser without a lot of lag(icefilms and such sites)
Im mostly going to be using it for gaming and video streaming

I know, there are many threads about KF vs NT, sorry for another one, I just haven't found my answer yet about following.
I'm visiting US and plan to buy a souvenir - either Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet. I lean towards NT slightly - because of the SD slot and RAM. I'm worried about locked bootloader however.
I would like to use the tablet for video playback, surfing the web, playing some games.
I'd like to have there ICS/CM9 one day. And that's the question. We have seen big progress in NT hacking recently, but it's definitely behind the state of KF development (of course thanks to B&N obstacles).
Is it only a matter of time and effort till NT gets working ICS (capable of reasonably smooth performance including video playback, etc.), or is it still a mystery, whether we ever get there? How big is the risk of ending with devs giving up due to some B&N obstacle?

Based on what we're seeing with CM7 I don't see any impossible hurdles for CM9. It's just a lot more work and a much less mature project. I'd say NT is a no brainer over KF.
Cool, Nook Tablet with only 8GB of storage was introduces for $50 less, $199 total. It keeps the SD slot so I'd say that's a great deal.
I just hope no new bootloader (with new hacking countermeasures) comes with it or it gets cracked soon.
UPDATE: Too bad, the RAM has been cut from 1GB to 512MB :-(
I am a amazon prime member/amazon fanboy try to buy everything there and was really excited in the summer when I heard amazon was making their own line of tablets.
Then it was finally announced and I was like wtf seriously... 8gb or storage and no sd card slot plus the dreaded power button and no volume control buttons. I was massively disappointed and planned to wait till they updated the kindle but since the NT was on sale for 200 I bought it and couldn't be happier for my needs. Before I was using a coby tablet with lower res screen and no development since no firmware is public.

I am really interesting in this problem too, NT hardware is much better but software development it’s far behind than KF.

Judging by the youtube videos I have seen, CM9 is coming along nicely. I think once a 3.0+ working kernel is working, it will only be a matter of time.
The obstacles with the NT are B&N's bootloader being locked down and continuously changing. That keeps holding up development as new fixes are constantly being needed to progress further. Now, it seems, with the introduction of the 8GB version, it seems to be stalling a bit again while current progress is ported over to that build as well. I may be wrong on that, but that's the way it seems to me.
So I bought Nook Tablet and I'm loving it. Best souvenir from vacation ever
Running so far only rooted stock 1.4.2 + Android Market. Looking at CM7, looking forward to CM9.

The only thing I disliked about my Nook is the fact that the B&N store is useless outside the States.
So using CM7 is pretty much obligatory for me.
That's true, but partly the same applies to Amazon Store - foreigners are not allowed to make purchases there.
Hacking - root + Market (Play, eh.) or CM7 / CM9 (it's coming!) was always the main reason for me to get one. I wouldn't be buying either of two, if it would be locked to stock forever
Didn't take too much to get me rooted and CM7 Alpha Final installed and this thing runs like a dream. Sure there are a few minor things I could be concerned about but overall it's very stable and I'm a happy camper.
I was actually considering the Kindle Fire at first but knew the NT was the way to go. Seems like yet another forum on here with a bunch of helpful people and I definitely appreciate it. Thanks guys and hope to make this my new home (in addition to GSII i777 of course).

I've been reading on what it takes to get CM7 on the 8GB and to be quite honest, it sounds like a bit of a nightmare to someone who doesn't look under the hood too much when it comes to these things. I'd much rather plug in the SD card with everything already taken care of and be done with it.
I've been on the fence re upgrading from the NC to the 8GB NT for this reason alone.

16GB. For the double storage and double ram, it seemed like a no-brainer. But I'd be curious to get a hands-on impression with the 8GB model cause if it's very similar in performance, I can pickup a 16GB microSD for $14.99.
I agree with the OP. I have a 16gb tablet and it is rooted. This thing is super fast. I bought the 16GB version because of the extra ram. I also have a nook color and it is a great device, but the nook tablet is superior in every way. I held off on purchasing mainly because I wanted to wait until an easy to root method was developed and I was (and still am) quite happy with my nook color.
Once ICS stable is ready, I will be all over it. I am content to run 1.4.2 rooted until then. Although I must admit I am looking at maybe getting one of those quad core Asus tablets when they come out.

What are they? They are CyanogenMod ROMs meant to replace B&N‘s. They add more functionality and make your NT easier to use as a tablet.
Hey guys, so I can land an excellent condition 16gb Touchpad for $160 today if I decide to. My question is, should I?
Just some quick background, my girlfriend has the original iPad which I have access to. I have a HTC Rezound phone that I have rooted. I would most definitely be buying this to root and just have a device that is bigger than my phone when I want to watch YouTube videos, surf the net while on the couch, play some games, etc.
I see that CM7 and CM9 is compatible with the Touchpad. I also see that CM9 renders the device not fully functional (mic, camera). I honestly would rarely use the mic or camera, so it's no biggie there. My question however is how the device other than those things functions with CM9? Is it a smooth experience? Does everything else pretty much work? Will CM9 get to a point where everything works great?
I just want to see if I should buy this or another budget tablet like the Fire or any upcoming ones.
Any advice would be great, thanks!

It will for sure fit. But that leaves less room for other stuff you put on it. I currently am down to 20 gigs left out of 32. But I have game roms and game data on there too.

Go for it! You'll have a dual boot tablet. You'll find that webos is a great os. Battery life is great and you can always switch to android when needed. Even though android is Alpha now, it works great. You won't regret it.
I think 16 is plenty for my use. Like you I generally web browse, YouTube, etc. I really don't store any content on my device. I have all the apps I could want, on Android and webOS. Here is a screenshot of the storage menu - 820 MB of 1.46 GB left for apps, 7.79GB left of 10.75GB for storage. The device is partitioned when you install Android, so you do lose about 3 GB. But when do you even really get the amount advertised?

Hey fellow rezounder. I had the touchpad since the firesale. Never used it really. I recently had a slow weekend so I threw cm9 on that beast. Now I use it every day. Webos is great but there just aren't any apps.
Cm9 is awesome. Everything you need is working. I even usesd titanium backup to restore all my apps from my rezound to the touchpad. I just bought the touchstone charging dock last night. I'm addicted to the touchpad again!

For your lighter usage I think you will have no problems with the 16gb version.
Get it... You get a good dual core and 1 gb ram tablet for a very cheap price. I use it more often than my brand new laptop for games, surfing, youtube, schools pdfs etc. 16 gb is big enough for tons of apps and stuff.

I concur. Heck, I torrent and then drop my stuff on my WII; right from my touchpad. Our computer (with 5 hard drives) barely gets turned on anymore.

I have a 16GB touchpad, and pairing it with a bluetooth keyboard its replaced my laptop as my go-to machine while out of the house. I take all my class notes and write drafts of papers using it, and its been very solid in terms of reliability. It does sometimes reboot by itself, but I've noticed it only happens after idling for a while and never while actually using it.
Storage isnt a big issue for me, after installing Android the SD card has about 10.5GB free which is plenty as long as you dont put a lot of music or video on it.
I'd say go for it. Its an absolutely amazing tablet for the price and with a dev community that's only going to grow as CM9 gets out of alpha.
Thanks so much for all of the responses guys! I ended up pulling the trigger on a 16gb one last night for $160 from a local Craigslist deal. It came in the original box with all of the original cables and paperwork. Everything is in brand new, mint condition! I was stoked.
The guy had no clue that you could even install Android on it. He said he was getting rid of it because it didn't have "all of the good iPad apps". LOL.
Anyways, his loss, my gain. I threw CM9 on it with ease last night and let me tell you, I am super happy with the purchase! This tablet is a steal for the price I paid.
Just a quick question, on webOS can you place shortcuts and such on the homescreen? I couldn't figure out how to do it.

You can drag icons from the drawer to the dock. That's it, there's no "desktop" in webOS.
I like a clean desktop and getting to my apps in webos is not a problem. I do have ICS installed and like the dual boot option but WebOs is so smooth that I really prefer it.

Do a search for cornerstone. I can't believe its running so flawlessly on my device. You won't regret it.

I'm checking out both KindleFire & NookTablet dev forums to decide which one I should get.
I'm really looking for a reading experience (with colour considering I will be reading a lot of design-related ebooks) thats also easy on the eyes (much like the e-ink)
I don't mind another Android experience but thats not a priority since I already have that through my phone that supports native Android 4.0 (+HTC Sense 4.0)
The only worry is developer support for stable working ROM's and the hardware&storage specs difference between the two, not to mention battery life.
Or should I just wait for the Kindle Fire 2?
I've posted this question in both forums to see both sides of the spectrum.

Nook Tablet has better Screen and double the Ram and Internal Sdcard (16gb) if you buy the Acclaim model.
Only drawback is that we hit a big bug in software/hardware that keeps our developers occupied, the famous Random reboot/shutdown bug.
If you can wait for KF 2 just do it though as it maybe better than both tablets.
For your purposes, the Nook Tablet with cm9 running the 2.x kernel will do just fine.
They can be had fairly cheap on ebay right now, though the Kindle Fire is even cheaper.
Given your requirements definitely the KF. Besides stock there really is only one stable ROM for the NT (CM7 Beta). Everything else is alpha (or more realistically - pre-alpha).

If you're looking for just a reading experience and am not interested in installed various Rom's I'd have to say the NT since it has more memory and a better display. I have both the KF and NT and think the NT is more comfortable to hold.
I will admit that if you're looking for custom roms the KF is better. We have great developers working overtime to get ICS & JB but those 2 aren't stable yet.
With the NT you can just root the tablet and either use the stock launcher or a 3rd party one like Go Launcher.

Skip both... get the nexus 7. Can run both nook and kindle apps. Better battery life, faster processor, and much better ROM out of the box. I am a former nook owner. I rooted it but kept the ROM. The only thing I miss is the sd-card.

Stable is apparently a relative term.
Cm9 with 2.x kernel is "stable", i.e. it doesn't crash randomly or anything like that as far as I am aware. It is still an Alpha IMO though as it still has things not working (largely due to the kernel). Definitely not a pre-alpha though.
