I have a sgt 10.1 running 3.2 and I want to root it. Its a 3g/4g tablet.
I downloaded the file I need to flash in stock recovery but i can't seem to get to stock recovery. I have tried every button combination in the world.
any other ideas? Please help.

You could try rooting it by the Odin method. Flash CWM from droidbasement.

well I have a issue getting into fastboot and/or recovery for that matter. from what i understand from the root/unlocking topics i must hold the vol. button while powering on the device. that doesnt work. i dont get any fastboot or recovery options at all.
My power button is located on the left side of the device and the volume buttons are directly below it. From the topics i read, the buttons are in a different location than that of the guides?
on the back of my tab my model shows to be:
SCH-I905/u
any help would greatly be appreciated. im not a noob by any means as i have rooted/hacked all of my android phones and tablets in the past but this SGT is getting the best of me for some reason.
OK. Guess no one has any helpful information?

Maybe this is an obvious question, but, did you try with the different combinations?
Pwr+vol down, then "vol up" to confirm selection or "vol down" to change it.
Pwr+vol up, then "vol down" to confirm selection or "vol up" to change it.
If you can get into download mode, download this recovery (select your tab model) and flash it with Odin, it has the keys fixed: http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=2553
finally i got it!
BUT, here lies the issue now.. i have the rolling recovery issue that i see spread around the forum.
I odin the recovery for the vzw i905 LTE CWM 5.5 from droid basement.
is there a different recovery i need to use?
again.

And what was the solution?
Have you tried this solution? (adapting the files to your model) [answer #7]: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642009
I had to press volume up and power. At the very moment the splash screen appears, release the power button.
As for the rolling fix... i was afraid to flash the fix due to it looking to be for a different model. Not the I905 with LTE. :-\

Maybe a combination of what this user did (and the quoted text): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26940676&postcount=412
so you think i should flash this file BOOTLOADER_P7510JPKG6_CL429994.tar.md5 even though it appears to be for a totally different tab?
i cant seem to find any stock files for a I905 :-/
btw, i really appreciate your help
Check this RootzWiki forum, they have all the stock files and other guides for your tab (maybe you can check that before trying something else): http://rootzwiki.com/forum/172-galaxy-tab-101-lte-development/
Also, in this thread are some stock files for your tab: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195861&page=2
Because I don't have the same model of your tab, I can't test anything, just point you to some info that seems reasonable.
In any case, if something goes wrong, you can go back to stock with those files. Remember to backup your data.

I have a US Cellular SCH-I905U us cellular tab 10.1 brick i need a stock firmware.
I don't have an answer to that question, but if you just want root try kingo root, it was the only thing that worked for me, although had to download the windows version, as there is no cwm or twrp for the us cellular version, goodluck!

I seem to have bricked my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with LTE that was just purchased from Verizon a couple of days ago.
This all started as an attempt to root the phone so that I could get Netflix working (root required to install that Asus Transformer patch that some seem to need). Here is the process that I went through in order to install CWM:
Prerequisites:
Downloaded ODIN3 1.85.
Downloaded CWM 4.0.0.4 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Plugged the tablet into my PC (Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64) while booted into the OS to confirm that drivers worked and it was detected properly.
Plugged the tablet into my PC (Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64) while booted into the "Download Mode" to make sure that drivers worked and it was detected properly.
Main Process:
Launched ODIN3 (ran as administrator).
From within ODIN3, clicked on the "PDA" button and selected the MD5 file for the CWM 4.0.0.4 image.
Booted my Galaxy Tab 10.1 into "Download Mode".
Confirmed that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 said "Waiting USB Cable".
Plugged the Galaxy Tab 10.1 into my PC via USB.
Confirmed that the ODIN3 application detected the USB device.
Confirmed the Galaxy Tab 10.1 changed from "Waiting USB Cable" to "Connected! Press the [Start] of Odin3!!"
From within ODIN3, clicked on the "Start" button.
Result:
The patching process completed without any errors. I then shut down the device and then started back up and tried to boot into recovery mode. Nothing - just a blank screen.
I then thought that I might have to install the CWM from the Android Market in addition to flashing the ROM (this might have been an incorrect assumption but I am not very experienced in this process) so I downloaded and installed it. I then tried to flash the recovery ROM via the Clockwork application but it complained about not having superuser access.
At this point I figured I was in a bit over my head and I decided to just reset the device to factory defaults (assuming that it would reset to the stock boot loader as well). I then initiated the factory reset process from within Android, the device reset itself, I got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo and then nothing - a blank screen.
Ugh - I think I just bricked my device and I am not quite sure how to get the stock recovery ROM back on there (I think I am going to be sick).
If anyone could give any advice on how to get me out of this situation or post the stock recovery ROM from the Verizon 4G Galaxy Tab I would greatly appreciate it.
Can you boot into recovery manually(volume down and power button)? If you can (try doing a factory restore from within recovery) or as long as the device lights up there is a good chance you will be able to bring it back and be okay. also did you root the device?

Well that is still good. Just put the tab into download mode and Odin it back to the original stock rom with super user.
Update:
I was able to get my tablet back from the brink late yesterday evening by doing the following:
Taking the CWM 4.0.0.4 image that was giving me the checksum error, extracting it from the tar.md5 file, and putting it back in a regular tar file.
Flashing the newly created .tar file back to the device via ODIN3.
I am still unable to boot into recovery mode (I just get a blank screen) but the main ROM booted and the system is usable. Unfortunately I don't have a backup of my stock recovery ROM to restore to the device.
Does anyone know if it still exists on the device somewhere that it can be pulled from and then reflashed?
Thanks to everyone for their responses and lack of mockery.
I've done the same thing. I did all my root research, flashed, then after it didn't work realized that it was for the wifi only version. I didn't know the 4g version was only 7 days old!
Once developers work on the tablet a little bit they'll have a fix for everything. We just need to wait at this point.
Somebody will likely have a full odin flash available soon.

Hey there... Can you elaborate on your 'extraction' process?
I too, did something similar -- here's my story:
I just got my 10.1 4G LTE and was able to root it using the exploit.zip file (I think someone referred to it as the '3G' method). I didn't use ODIN at all, just rebooted in stock recovery (power up then upon seeing Samsung logo, press Vol+) and applied the .zip file. I know I had root because I was able to install and use titanium backup and root explorer.
Unfortunately, I saw another comment in a thread that said to download the ROM manager and install CWM recovery through that application. In my haste I did so and now, all I get is a continual boot loop at the Samsung logo. I can get nowhere past this. I tried holding down the power key for 10 secs and it appears to power down, but then it shortly starts back up again.
If I power up and hit Vol+ when seeing the Samsung logo, I do see the two icons (the right icon says "Downloading")... When I select the left icon, it screen blanks out and boot loops - shouldn't I see the recovery menu? I have not tried selecting the Downloading icon just cause I'm not sure what's beyond that step.
I have not been able to boot up completely, as some have said they were able to do. I've not used ODIN, and it seems like the way to go, but just wanted to get advice from those who know more than me, prior to making another mistake.
Maybe it's a quick fix to boot? Another key combo I don't know about?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks

By extraction I mean that I used WinRAR to extract the image file from the tar.md5 file and compressed it back into a tar file. I then flashed it via ODIN. This got rid of the checksum error and allowed me to boot into the normal ROM. Recovery mode was still messed up though.

There is no Verizon GTab 10.1 firmware there, the model # is SCH-I905
You guys seem to be flashing the recovery meant for the wifi version, which, as you can see, does not work with the mobile network models...
Before following a rooting guide, make sure that the method is proven to work on the mobile network version...

Try this thread. It's meant for the LTE recovery.
This is a ODIN flashable for VZW LTE Tab 10.1 ONLY for working CWM recovery.
I'll add another post with the stock recovery also for the LTE version.
STOCK RECOVERY for VZW LTE Tab 10.1 ODIN Flashable. (HC-3.1 LTE)
Hope this helps anyone that needs it or made the same mistake I did. This only fixes if you used Rom Manager to Flash recovery (that is made for the non-LTE version) and get the black screen when trying to get into recovery.
I'll try to dump my entire stock F/W today and post that someplace too for people that are totally hosed like I was yesterday. (Boot/System/etc/etc)

Matt, would you mind making one of these without root and with the stock recovery? A complete return to its fresh out-of-the-box state?
I used your recovery image and was able to install it via ODIN, but now I need to unroot so I can return this thing.
Thanks for all of your work up to this point!

Do you mean via the command line? I don't want you to work on it if it's not necessary. I just need to lock this sucker back up before I have Verizon replace it!
I recently tried to root my Galaxy tab 10.1 "4G" that I got from Rogers using the files under the 4G portion in the Look Here First thread. Went into recovery to flash kernal and recovery files okay. Rebooted.
Then the bad stuff started: Boot screen loop.
After doing some more research it seems the reason why this happened is because the Rogers device is actually not a 4G device but a 3G device. Accordingly flashing the 4G files onto a 3G device has most likely caused this.
I am able to boot using the volume down + power button, however I cannot access recovery mode. I can access Downloading mode with Odin recognizing it. I tried to see if I was able to flash CWM onto it with no avail with the following screen
My guess is that it is due to flashing an incompatible Kernel... sigh.
So now I ask you gurus, is my Galaxy Tab 10.1 fully bricked or is there some other way I can unbrick this?
Thanks in advance.
I am going to assume that since you are able to get into download mode that you are not hard bricked but just soft bricked. In which case there must be some files that you can flash with odin to get you back to a stock version of honeycomb...or actually rather be able to flash another kernal through odin.
Again im not sure with how flashing with the gtab since I havent flashed anything on mine yet but I have experience flashing different kernals on my captivate and that was what happened to me numerous times.
That was my first thought too when I realized Download mode was still accessible. The file I tried was Overcome's CWM recovery file so that's one possibility why it was not able to go through. I would try flashing various kernels to see if I can get anywhere but I have yet to find any stock/relevant kernels to do so.
UPDATE: ... I apparently had KIES running in the background so I closed that and bam, it is now able to enter recovery mode. I did a factory reset, cache wipe and all but it still is not able to boot up. I reckon I still require a proper kernel. It still is impossible to access the device's internal storage however so I am not able to simple drag and drop the necessary files.
Is there a way of doing this via ODIN as is the only method I have available?

Install new Recovery, then skip to restoring stock mod, I am doing it right now, hope it works. Was looking for solutions all day nothing else is there
did the very same thing when I first got my Rogers Tab: follow the Overcome guide exactly and all will be well again -- flash the re-stock package first, then jump straight to the latest Overcome 2.2.0 with the CWM and you can use Pershoot's kernel too if you wish.

KIES is a program that's running on your PC. I would hazard a guess that you just need to close it as you would with any program. The op was apparently connected to the computer when trying to get into recovery mode. If you're not connected to the computer when you hold power and volume - and you get the two options. Recovery on the left, download mode on the right. Choose the one on the left with the volume -button and start recovery when it's highlighted with volume +
Hope this helps.

Ok,...I see that there is enough info posted to get you back up... but just an FYI.. this device has a seperate recovery and kernel...in other words.. to root you just need to Odin a compatible recovery and then install the correct binaries to gain root access.
This device is so simple to root... I have an e4gt..and that device(until framaroot)..was a pain.. it's recovery is part of the kernel.. not only that, but it can be implemented different ways into the kernel
Back on topic..... locate a recovery.. Odin it... reboot.... boot to recovery.. flash root zip... If you have flashed something wrong but still have Odin mode.. like said above.. flash the stock rom or if you can't find it... flash the recovery(for the device) then boot to it and then put a custom rom on...

I own a Galaxy S2 for AT&T. I had rooted it, installed Clockwork Mod Recovery and CM7 without any problems. I found an article from CNET about a ICS Rom download. I'm sorry I cannot post the link as I am a new user and the forum rules do not allow me to. The article is called "Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich how-to guide" on CNET UK.
And I was interesting in trying this new ROM. So I made a back up using the CM Recovery, downloaded the file, and flashed the ROM per the directions. It flashed without any problem and booted right up into ICS. At first glance, everything was alright, with the exception of a few bugs. I noticed the touch buttons did not work, except for the home button. Then I noticed that the phone functions did not work. So I attempted to reboot into recovery only to discover it was gone, along with my backups I had made. Now, I can't even get the phone into download mode (volume buttons + power). Also, the phone is seemingly unrooted now. I fear I have bricked it. I'm sorry if this was in another post, but I'm in panic mode now. Can my phone be fixed? Thank you for any help you can provide.
Edit: Okay, I was using this forum post: "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" and in it, it mentions getting to download mode the incorrect way, which explains why I could not get into download mode.
I followed the instructions in the post to the letter, flashed everything and according to Odin, it was successful. The phone booted up and what I see is what appears to be the stock OS. However, the phone functions still will not work and the soft keys on the bottom are also "screwy" (i.e. only the home button works). Are there any ways to revert my GS2 to stock, as in when I first bought it, so I can start completely over, like from a clean slate? I'm just so confused right now, I thought I had a handle on this stuff, but I guess not. I'm worried I messed up my phone for good.
Also, when I hit the power button, there is no option to reboot the phone, only shut off.
Our phone (I777) is not the same as the international SGS2 (I9100). The ROM you flashed was built for the international version, which resulted in the problems you are having. Currently, while we are able to flash several I9100 ROMs onto our phones thanks to Entropy512's wonderful Hellraiser tool, we can NOT flash ICS ROMs for reasons stated in other threads.
Follow this guide here to get back to stock.
Also, for future reference, please use the search function on these boards. All the information you need to get your phone working again can be found through it.
Try flash any i777 kernel. Like the first time rooting it. Download mode>odin>reboot. Then try any i777 Rom kernel and modem if the above doesn't work.

The package you downloaded from sammobile.com/firmware, according to the article, is I9100XXLP2_I9100OXALP2_OXA.rar. I didn't download it to look at all of the components, but I'm sure it contains everything including bootloaders, param.lfs and crc for the I9100. To get your phone back to stock, you need to flash all of those components for the I777, along with the stock I777 firmware. The files you need are all available in the Download Repository linked in my signature. Specifically, you need the files in the section I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries. I would also suggest that you flash the param.lfs first by itself, then flash the whole package.
Let us know if you need any additional help.
Also: the button combinations for entering recovery and download mode differ between the two models, and are contained in the secondary bootloader. You will need the I9100 button combination to get into download mode initially, and then once you flash over the secondary bootloader from I777, the button combinations will change.
Really? Another thread? This must be the new "galaxy s2 or skyrocket"

As noted, please be more descriptive in the future, for your benefit as much as others. If people at a glance know the issue, they might open a thread they would otherwise ignore..

Thanks for the helpful link. I know that to get to Download Mode, I need to hold both volume buttons while plugging in the phone while ODIN is running on the PC. In fact, I had to do that to get into the trouble I'm in now.
But after flashing an sgs2 i9100 version of ICS, I cannot enter download mode in the way I used to be able to. I can't enter Download mode in the way that the i9100 does either.
It sounded like the OP had the same issues I'm having now and was able to resolve them. So . . . does anyone know how to get to Download Mode under these circumstances?
The solution and a link to it are in the second post in this thread.

I'm not trying to poke the lions, but the solution to my problem is not in that post or the link. If I could get my phone into Download Mode, I could do those things -- and I wouldn't be here trying your patience.
I can't apply that fix if I can't get my phone into Download Mode. I can't get it into download mode because I stupidly ODIN-flashed ICS for i9100, like the OP did. Anyone know of a way to get a phone in that situation into Download Mode?

You might need to get a jig and put it into download mode that way.
@skfitz,
When you flashed the I9100 ICS package, you flashed the bootloaders and probably param.lfs. The secondary bootloader contains the button combos for download mode and recovery, and so will be the I9100 button combinations. However, since our hardware is designed differently than the I9100, I'm not sure what variation works. I have read several posts from persons who have flashed the I9100 bootloaders, and they say they can get into download mode with another button combination, but I'm not sure what it is.
Secondly, the link in the second post of this thread, the unbrick/return to stock thread, does not contain bootloaders and param.lfs. You will need to go the the download repository linked in my signature to find those files. In fact, you should probably flash the files from the "I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries" section, since this is the complete firmware from sammobile.com.
As the previous poster said, if you can't figure out the button combo, you can get into download mode with a jig.
Edit: I9100 download mode is volume down + home hardkey + power. So I would try volume down + home softkey + power. Not sure, but I think you can do it on the I9100 without plugging in the usb cable.

Thanks creepy. No luck with the soft home key. Plan is to use the jig and follow your instructions. Thanks again, I really appreciate it.
SGSII Bricks
Hey guys, I'm coming from a Captivate (sgh i897) which was virtually unbrickable. I got my SII (SGH i777) about three weeks ago and I'm pretty fed up with stock. Before i go on to flash unNamed or just the Siyah Kernel; Is the i777 about as unbrickable as the captivate? I can fix a soft brick extremely quickly, I have been flashing for 6 months and although i don't know everything I know what i'm doing. If I stick to stable i777 roms, are the chances of me bricking (most likely due to software error not MY error) anywhere close to zero? Thanks guys, i really appreciate any feedback.

Try volume down+power+connect usb cable
or
Volume (both)+ power+ USB
The jig worked. Happiness
The jig put the phone into download mode. It's a good thing too, because no combination of buttons was going to make it happen.
So once the jig worked its magic, I Odin-flashed the bootloader from creepy's repository. After that, the phone would boot into Download Mode the way it's supposed to, using both volume buttons and plugging-in the phone.
Then I Odin flashed the param. Everything still works. So I wanted to flash the I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries, but the download site only shows the FBI's billboard. What to do, wise ones?

Either one of the two bottom links will probably work. (They were the last time I checked a couple days ago.)
I wasn't able to download the binary files. So I flashed the stock rom, cleared the caches, and the phone seemed to work fine. Then I rooted it again, installed CWM, and restored from my backup image (cg7). Perfect.
All,
I kinda ran into an issue after i was trying to upgrade to ICS on my Galaxy S II.
I downloaded the ROM that Faryaab posted on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487 .
SInce i upgraded to Android 2.3.6 before using the information from Intratech in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 post i also installed CF-Root 5.
Using CWM version 3 i installed the new firmware that Faryaab posted.
I placed the extracted tar.md5 file in a firmware folder on the phone's SD card. At the start of the install i selected "Keep CF-Root"
But after the phone rebooted one and continued with the install i briefly saw an error.
After this the phone rebooted again but froze at the "Samsung Galaxy SII" bootsplash.
I am still abale to get into CWM Recovery but í don't seem to be able to install another ROM or do anthting else.
Also i'm unable to install any updates using Odin3 v1.85 but this is probably due to the fact that i have CWM installed.
The same go's for "Odin3_v3.04" and "Odin Multi Downloader v4.28".
Unfortunately i'm a complete NOOB when it comes to this as i haven't played around enough to really know exactly what i'm doing.
I tried to explain everything i did as precice as possible and i hope someoone can help me!
I can't make a lot of sense of your post, but you don't mention download mode once.
I don't know how you've managed to flash something with "CFM version 3" (whatever that is) nor why you'd want to keep a GB kernel with an ICS ROM (that won't work).
Sorry for the confusion.
I used CWM version 3, i just noticed i made a typo.
I think the kernel is my mistake. I flashed the new ICS firmware before upgrading the Kernel...
Right now i'm unable to use Odin (for as far as i can determine).
I;m able to startup in download mode (power+volume up+home) at which point i am able to get into CWM Recovery (part of CF-Root).
That is all, im completely stuck with what i know.

Download mode is volume down and home and power.
Volume up and home and power is recovery mode.

Thats indeed turned out to be it!
I was able to flash a new ROM and new Firmware and everything is working again and running on Android 4.0.3 now
Hi, Sorry to post here, but there isn't a section for the 8.9 tabs. That I found.
Ive been trolling all night and morning here and other sites trying to find a solution to my problem, and apparently from what I've seen, no one seems to get an answer to this question or the same for the 10.1 tab
I have The Galaxy Tab 8.9 SGH i957D (Telus) LTE 4G.
Using both Odin 3.7 and 1.83 I have tried to root using SGH-rooted-kernel-V2 from a couple of sources and all I get on reboot is the 2 splash screens, then it just sits on a black screen with the backlight on.
After a few attempts with either version of Odin, I tried CWM recovery, this flashed successfully also, and I can get into CWM recovery and Download mode, but still cannot get past the splash screens.
I have tried the stock ROMs a couple of times and different custom images (DaGrootkernel, DaGOCkernel), but still can't get past the splash screens. My battery drained over night, and I have it charging now in download mode, as otherwise it just loops continuously buzzing and lighting up, but still the same issue, I can't even turn it off as it just reboots as soon as I try.
From what I've seen on here, there are a few of us that need a solution to basically the same issue.
Please... Could one of the gurus on here give some advice as to what us noobs need to do with our semi bricked tabs?
Thanks.

Thanks, I'll have a look there. Just flashed successfully with Odin 3.7 and openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-sgh-i957.tar. open recovery work great, but still no boot past the splash screens.
the file you used is only for changing your recovery leaving your android os wonky. find a original stock rom for your tablet and flash that with odin...that will bring all back to stock. then you can reflash the custom recovery and then install custom roms if you want
simple way of understanding android is to think of it as a pc
recovery = bios
stock or custom rom = windows..linux..etc...
hope this helps

Thanks a lot, that actually cleared things up a bit. Can I read the recovery off my wife's identical tablet and use that? Can that be done with Odin, or what would I need to read that?
Thanks.
