Hi all,
As ICS is fast approaching, I want to prepare for it without losing all my contacts.
If I have done Backup & Restore from using PC Companion, am I safe with all my contacts and apps?
The most important is I want my contacts back and untouched, when I got my XS, I manually transferred all my contacts to it.
I just wanted to be clear if I'm safe or not and do I need a third party app.
Cheers!
Copy your contacts from your phone to your sim memory and you are OK

Or export to external memory and done.
I've exported it to my Sim card but there wasn't enough space for all my contacts. So I exported to my internal storage. Will that work?
cheers.
Use "Wondershare MobileGo" to back up contact and sms or software you want

Yeah. Make sure you don't wipe media storage before / during / after the ICS install. After it was installed, choose import from internal storage. Wait a little and it's ready

The best way is to use Google Sync! Simply export your contacts to your gmail and then you can import them whenever you want!
Enjoy!
+1 for Google Sync, if you loose your phone you dont loose your contacts.
But always have a local backup. It's good. Use the export feature, plus Pc Companion

Is there a way to back-up, move and or copy your lists of contacts onto the SD card? Had all of my contacts entered then I rooted and had to re-enter them all back in. I would love to just move files then inputing them over and over.
They should be backed up with google. Try settings>accounts & sync>your gmail>sync contacts
Or something. Haha

Thanks alot.
Make sure if you don't want to backup your google contacts to uncheck the backup to google account. Otherwise you will have duplicates.
The last reply is the best method. It is always better to have it synced through gmail or another email server. Does anyone know how to force 'phone' contacts over to say gmail or exchange server without doing an export?
awesome info here - learning more everyday
Im rather confused by how to go about backing up my contacts. Ever since google started backing up contacts, I haven’t quite understood which contacts (sim, phone or both???) it backs up. Is there any good application which backs up all of your contacts, that is , those saved in your sim, phone and google account, altogether.
I flashed bionix V 1.3.1 last night and used ‘MyBackup Root’ & ‘Titanium backup’
to restore my contacts. First I restored user applications with data and all of my contacts were back. Then I used ‘My Backup Root’ to restore contacts. (I don’t know why I took this step). It started erasing all of my contacts before restoring. When it got done, I realized I was missing my contacts saved in sim card.
This is all sooo confusing that I don’t know how to get my sim contacts back.
why did u use the other software once u had used titanium backup?
kies does it aswell ??

Hi, I used My Backup to backup my contact before & restore it after I change to other ROM.
However, it seems the My Backup will erase all your contacts in your SIM card as well after you restore. The WORST part is it restored the contact & store as Google contact. You can't export the contact to SIM card anymore then.
Luckily I have backup in my old phone & imported back into the SIM card & reload it again.
My advise, try Go Contacts app. This app do the tricks where export your phone contact into SD Card & imported back flawlessly.
Why not just have all your contacts inside of Google? And each time you addd a contact, make sure it's being added to your google account. I've been on Android since the G1... never 'backed up' a contact.. Just logged in to my google account on the phone and had them there.
or you can simply read the noob guide in this forum and follow the steps that are proven to be used by alot of people....
I stoted all contacts in Google account, everytime upgrading to new rom, synchronize contact again, all of them will be availabe in your mobile. It's my simple solution.

I dont know of a way to get your contacts saved to your google account AFTER you have already chosen to save them to phone or SIM. I'm pretty sure you only get that option once. I would think you'd have to go thru each individual contact(omg, that sux) maybe erase and then resave and choose ur google account as the location to store. As stated before saving to ur google account is the best option to backup contacts

This is exactly what happened... I couldnt have explained it better myself. My Backup erased all of the contacts (both on sim and phone) before restoring and restored contacts to google. It is important to note that it did not restore contacts that were saved on sim to google. However, when I go into 'My Backup' app and view the data i have backed up. I can see all the contacts (both sim and phone contacts) in there. I will never use 'MyBackup' to backup my contacts.
The reason I dont save all of my contacts to google is I, for odd reasons, sometimes have to use (though rarely) my old school phone. I just insert my sim in it and i get all my contacts.
Google backup/sync and ubuntu one mobile.

^This about sums it up
Well .. Vibrant already has the import/exper function. Try using it and after flashing, open the .vcf file in your external mem card and it will extract your contacts to your phone.

this link helped me out a lot. I believe this is the issue you need help with.
I'm trying to transfer my backup assistant contacts to my google contacts for my phone. Is this even possible? and if so, how does one go about doing this? I'm tired of having 3-5 numbers for each contact and would like to just have it all on google since a lot of roms are cutting out backup assistant.
You can do this:
- Go into contacts on your phone
- Hit menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card
This will create a .vcf file that you can import into your gmail contacts. (I did this step on my computer.)
There may be other, possibly easier methods, but this is how I've done it in the past.

Do just this^^^ it's the easiest way to save contacts and be able to get them back regardless of which rom your going to

I actually had to do the same thing recently and the way I did it was to log in to Verizon and used backup assistant to export a file with my contacts. Then I logged in to my gmail and imported them to my contacts in gmail. Then when I flashed CM7, all I had to do was sync and they were all there.

I wish I could do it this easily, but I have multiple duplicates that I want to get rid of. I guess I could just do it in google contacts. Also, for some reason the .vcf file wouldn't work for me, but the .csv file from backup assistant worked.

I did this by slowly going through all my contacts and deleting the copies and then importing it to google contacts.
Thanks for both of your guy's help! It's much appreciated!
I did the same thing. Went through and un-linked them, combined numbers under one contact where I needed to, etc. it wasn't fun but I only had to do it once. Life is much easier with out having some contacts on the phone and some online.

i have flashed a custom rom n now i want to know how to sync the contacts as samsung kies is not recognising it
Hope you synced them to your gmail account too. Just log on there re- sync voila.
I prefer save the contacts from Contacts on phone and save file.vcf and after flash you new rom, import from sd card. I think that this is safer.
Either sync with your gmail account or import from phone via. Vcf file!

and I sync it to google account to
Well if you have not synced your contacts on Google or sd card, its not possible to get them back. However i think you wouldn't have turned off the auto sync on phone, so try to sync the contacts with Google once. However, in future i'd recommend you to sync the contacts with Google and keep a backup in your sd card (in vcf format)

In my opinion, if you have to choose one, go for the Google sync. There was once my vcf file was corrupted and I had no contacts left

Sync it wih Google or import with VCF nd keep backups of ur VCF file at multiple places.. helps if u corrupt your memory card..
Go back to stock ROM, sync your contact with google, reflash CyanogenMod 7.
You cannot use Kies when using CM7. Because CM7 is not a Samsung ROM

I was trying to sync my contacts from my phone to my SD card before switching ROMs since Backup Assistant doesn't work.
Anyways, my phone froze while it was synchronizing my contacts, but apparently got them all anyways. Only problem is, since it froze, I assumed they didn't all go through and I tried over and over again. Well, now I have all of my contacts 8 times and it wants to link them all together.
Never have I been so annoyed with my contacts.
Is there any way of erasing the 7 extra listings of each contact I don't need?
Do I have a long day ahead of me by manually deleting them 1 by 1 off of my list? Or is their sync files I can find with root browser and just delete them?

If you flash another rom that has backup assistant working would it only list your contacts once? would that be easier than deleting all those?

No. It would put my contacts back but it would still sync them from my SD card and link them all together again. Plus my SD card would still have wasted space of multiple backups of the same contacts written on it.
I suppose I could delete all contacts from my SD card, download a ROM with working backup assistance... if there is one, and then save them to my SD again.
But I don't even know where the contacts sync to my SD in order to delete them.
