[Q] Converting to a full time mp3 device - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Think I'm going to convert my Fascinate to a full time mp3 device rather than try to sell it. Wondering if there are any ROM ideas for this specifically or if anyone else has even thought of making one specifically for this purpose. Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Interesting idea, but exactly what difference would making it a 'full time' mp3 player be as opposed to just having a shortcut to your music player of choice? I'm not trying to rain on your parade I'm just curious what features you had in mind

Sounds like the idea I had... Since upgrading to the GNex, I have thought of converting my old Evo to an mp3 player, to replace my ancient 5g iPod. I am thinking that going with the most stripped down, vanilla ROM, with your music player of choice installed. As additional benefit, the WiFi would still work, allowing for easily browsing/downloading additional music.

Maybe like dude said, just a stripped down rom with maybe some apps like voodoo sound. I like the idea though.

The dev who made geewiz rom tried his hand at this but ran into some problems. You can read about it in his thread...

Is there a way to get this system, app, feature on my Samsung galaxy???
Thanks a lot

i will guess and say no. if there's an app, then it's related to the audio chip. i've already read the one in our phone is poor quality, so i'm getting another Cowon PMP.
and it was showed that it was mainly some really good EQ profiles in software and that is why they can add that to roms.
I would think that porting from a sense rom to it might not be too easy , but never know.
Yeah my friends just let me listen to some music via headphones on his Evo3d and all I can say is wow.

Rezound ICS and music

Hi guys. Couple questions please. I know some might be answered already but I have too hard a time searching for this and finding exactly what I need. So I'd really appreciate some help.
What do you do for getting ICS stock on the Rezound?
How could I backup my Rezound so I could make it factory image etc?
What quality is Google music streaming? I uploaded mp3 320k sound file. But when streaming it, it sounds like crud. This is even with always use high quality mode. It sounds to me like maybe 64k only.
Thanks.

1. If you want AOSP (stock) ICS on your Rezound, then go to this link. This is assuming you know how to flash a custom rom.
2. Well you can do Nandroid backups in recovery to backup your device. I recommend you use AmonRa. But getting it back to factory image (GingerBread) is a bit difficult, since most of the ICS roms out there update your mainversion from 1.xx.xxx.xx whatever it is to 3.10.605.13. If you try to go from ICS to a nand backup of a GB rom, you'll get an error. Go to this link to fix your mainversion and afterwards, you can then go back to stock GB.
3. I have no idea what quality Google Music is streaming since I don't use it myself. If you don't like the quality of the music, but like streaming music, then I recommend you use GrooveShark. The quality of the music is great.
Hope I helped!
Thanks.
What is AOSP?
Aren't there any senseless stock ICS fully working fine for the Rezound?
I'm lost a bit with how complex this might be.

AOSP is Android Open Source Project and we dont have any yet because we dont have a working ICS kernel yet. The one he linked you to is as close to stock ICS as we can currently get but it still has some sense framework to get it to work.

Technically it doesn't matter, the OS will scan all of the folders on the SD for music files. To exclude a folder, put a empty file named .nomedia in it.
I saved for offline some songs from my Google music. Found the folder and copied it to ext sdcard folder its named music with 5 .mp3 files.

I think those songs can only be viewed by the google music app, pretty sure the same applies to amazon music. They are probably drm'd.
When you upload your own music to Google they dont turn around and drm it when you want to save for offline use.I dont think.

Eeer, didn't you just return a nexus or was that somebody else??
Yep I got the nexus yesterday. I'm getting used to it slowly.
I got the rezound. Then iPhone 4s. Then nexus. Then rezound. Now I have nexus.
Each time I ran into issues. Now with nexus I'm better but notice something I need to check on.
I liked the rezound except for this thing I talked about on the screen. It bothered me. Plus I realize I am kind of bored with sense and wanted to try something different.

Does Verizon have a direct line into your bank account.. $35 every 2 weeks??? Is it worth switching phones that often rather than sticking with one and dealing with the issues.??
Haha. Verizon having a direct link to my bank account.
Umm all this has been in the span of around 2 weeks. Not 2 weeks for each.
Some stuff us just a mental thing like I won't be comfortable or relaxed when something is on my mind. It's one issue I have to deal with in my life. I won't be at ease if something is bothering and about something even if its to some people a small issue.
The iPhone screen I think still is the best one out. But its too damn small. Plus ios is too closed and limited. There's no proper text reflow in WWW browser and not many free apps I would be interested in.
The Rezound stuff I notice on the screen bothers me. As does the weight using the extended battery. It's not ICS stock fully stable. I like the ear buds. I like the screen except for that stuff I see.
The nexus is bigger screen. ICS. Ear buds are nice. Light. But I also notice similar stuff on its screen kind of lime on the Rezound.
If I could I would take the iPhone 4s screen and make it 4.3" minimum. Take the ICS from nexus. Take the ibeats ear buds from the Rezound. Radio and 4G from Rezound. Speaker from iPhone or Rezound. Weight from nexus. Cpu from Rezound.

Voodoo?

Let me start out by saying this isn't a thread wanting to know when something is coming out but rather is there a possibility. Can the note support voodoo sound? If so that will be one more thing to look for in the future of the note. Voodoo sound on my infuse was like a wet dream. It would be great if the note had that ability sometime down the road. Again not asking for it just wondering if it has the capability.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
Sorry it has the wrong DAC (Yamaha); i still go back to my infuse on occasion just for the sound.
The most we can hope for is voodoo louder (it's running on the international Note).
Check out equalizer in the app store it helps some, but still can't overcome inferior hardware.
Sadly all I care about is the dB boost on line out. I guess ill keep my infuse as an mp3 player for my car instead of selling it lol.

Listen to Metal? Post your music setups

I myself am toying around with a few setups trying to decide which is best. Im finding ROMS play a big part in sound quality. So please post your ROM. I dont know if its cause we dont have kernel source or what, but i cant get the sound quality i had with my thunderbolt.
ROM - Ineffibillis Deus 1.0
Poweramp - like it, but crashes and freezes a lot, at least for me and cant figure out why. When it works i use rock preset, tone disabled, srs enabled, beats disabled. Id give sound quality and power an 8/10.
Google Music - not great alone.. But when combined with EQualizer app it can come close to poweramp. Im shying away from this because i dont want to get too used to it since we will be losing unlimited data.. Also, i hate having to be logged into webplayer at home with my gmail accessible.. :/ ill give this 7.5/10
So what are you guys running?

Stock operating system, stock music player, beats audio, JVC Gumy buds or Klipsch s4 earbuds. Sounds awesome. Just listened to some Gorgoroth before bedtime last night!

After reading theses posts I tried Poweramp and yes it is very nice. Big improvement over the stock music player. My Rezound sounds much better now over the bluetooth in my car. Prier to Poweramp the stock player lacked Bass, Poweramp is able to over come that disability. Poweramp actually makes the Rezound a lot closer to the sound quality we had on the EVO3D and it didn't even come with Beats Audio.

It is a big improvement as a previous user posted. You can set EQs where you want, or use the built in presets. And if you want multiple EQs, you can create your own presets.

If you like it, go pro. I seriously can't stand Poweramp coming from my Droid Charge. I tried multiple versions, all of which crashed all the time. I had different ROMs, kernels, etc and Poweramp still crashed. Maybe its fixed now, maybe not.
I think Mortplayer, DSP Manager, and Neutron is where its at.
Oh, and by the way, you take a hit on sound quality in Poweramp with the EQ or tone controls active. It is just the way it is. I don't consider the Rezound sound in the same league as Galaxy S and family on Voodoo or the iPhone, but the Rezound could sound fine if tweaked. Neutron player should have enough tweaks to whip the Rezound sound into shape without a quality hit.
My $.02
I've been using PowerAmp Pro for about 1.5-2 years and never had a problem with it. The Beats headphones kinda suck with metal though since there's too much bass.

Sound quality hit. I A/B'ed with and without EQ by listening to music and toggling it on and off with the EQ set to flat. It likely has more benefit than harm if you really need to EQ though.
Neutron player is where it is at, IMO.

Unfortunately not. That's the only thing I miss about my Charge. Supercurio only owns Samsung, and won't let anyone port his work to anything he doesn't own because he wants to be able to support it properly if it has his brand on it. It might be possible to emulate, but no one has done it yet.

I would agree with you but since The 2.0 update it allows for skins. I use kovledevs ICS power amp skin and Its much better looking. It also skins the player and Widgets fyi. The beats actually makes a pretty good difference. But sense roms just have such better sound. For me for some unknown reason my audio is really messed up and seems like it's only playing in mono instead of stereo. And it's only a problem on AOSP rooms. As soon as I go to sense its fine. So I may go back

As a side note I realized that even replacing the lcd and digitizer is quite cheap and easy.

Why not the S3? I tend to think that is a good phone overall. Althoughm when you take apart these phones you see there is no metal shielding around the components like htc or motorola has. This is why the signal is always so good on these devices.
Getting back on topic how does poweramp stack up to the beats player? Isnt beats restricted to only the integrated htc player? I thought I saw a script somewhere to access the beats audio for use on any player. What player or script brings a purer sound from the DAC?
