Why is battery life so bad on the Rezound? - HTC Rezound

Currently running Clean Rom 1.4 Senseless and just did S-Off.
I bought a extended battery due to the awful battery life but still I am getting really bad overall life.
I am coming from an Incredible so I am use to good batt life but is it basically due to the screen and dual core processor? Kernel? Rom?

Software combos can make huge differences but, if you get bad battery life on an extended battery, its's either user related or you keep getting bad batteries.

upgrade your firmware. its been said the newest firmware is showing better battery life then ones before.
you are s=off so what i would say is to run the latest leaked ruu.
if you arent to comfortable with it you can follow these steps:
1. back up rom, user data
2. back up internal storage (ruu will wipe it)
3. place latest ruu zip on the root of your external SD card.
4. flash it twice, first time will be super fast the second one will take the longest.
5. flash or fastboot your recovery of your choice back to the phone.
6. now this part is up to you, you can restore the rom you are currently on or flash it over and start fresh. ( for me when i restored i was having problems and random FC so i did a wipe and started fresh)

Hmm I'll probably do the firmware upgrade. Also does 4G LTE require more power from the phone than 3G?
Also yes I do stream a lot but I always have my screen off.

Yes, it uses a lot more power. You can save power by using wifi as much as possible.

Some programs that I've noticed seem to kill my battery faster even when not using the particular app:
- Words with Friends
- Winamp
- Task Killers
- Trillian
- Samba Filesharing (only when sharing is active though)
- Google Latitude (although battery drain on this service is much less than in it used to be in the past)
- Wifi Protector
I'm sure there are a few others I'll think of later..

yep 4g destroys battery. im working on making a task for tasker app that will turn on the ICS power save mode when screen is off.
the power save mode will kick in normally when the phone is below 20% i believe. but the options you have for said mode, you can turn off 4g and turn 1 core off. but this task is hard to do because i am no way a dev.

I personally find that awake battery life is decent, screen of battery is less than decent.
newest leak seems to be, awake (screen on) battery is terrible, screen off battery drain is nonexsistant ~ unless you are asking for it by having gps, autosync, or 4g on

One thing, I pay 30 bucks a month for data (just like the rest of you) and have a hard time sucking on WiFi because of poor battery life. I guess my point is why have 4G if you can't use it? If thats the case I might as well of stayed with Sprint. That said I think the 4G drain would really depend on how far the tower is from your location. Mine are pretty close. I have gone the other route and turned off WiFi and just live off 4G. I'll let you know how that goes..

I actually got rid of my extended battery and went back to my stock one after I flashed the newest leak. It's that much better. I also use 4g all the time, no WiFi
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA

I am on latest leak and battery life is decent with extended. Agree that with screen off battery drain is very slow. Battery even charges quickly even while tethering. It could always be better though.. with heavy use I can drain by battery in a 3 to 4 hours. And heavy is reading forums and articles using tapatalk 2, tweetdeck for twitter/fb, ESPN score center, maybe you tube but just the screen on and typing/touching the screen kills it.
Using leaked 3.14.605.. s-off and..

I think it matters a great deal how strong your signal is. I only have 3G in my area and my signal at home is pretty weak. When I turn off wifi and just use 3G my battery drops like a rock.

The screen-on time is the main battery killer of the device.
I agree that overall the battery life on the Rezound has been relatively poor for me in comparison to other smartphones - regardless of what kernel I have been running.
Holding out hope that the upcoming official ICS release helps. Aside from that, I just placed an order for the beastly extended battery.
I like this device, but the battery life is just not very good.

The screen is the number one killer (since it's high-def) followed by the 4G radio. After a normal day's usage my screen takes up anywhere from 75%+ of the battery life.

I guess I just have to stop streaming my fav show in the morning Bababooey.
Hopefully with the ICS release our devs can do something about this.

it's mostly the kernel. can't manage frequency or governors without tampering perflock. can't undervolt. once we have a fully controllable devicevwe can save more power. just don't have too high expectations because I seriously doubt we can get double the juice with how much the display drains

I'm satisfied with the extended battery. It impresses me daily and I never have to worry about 15000 tasker rules to try and save battery. I just leave everything on all the time.
I never used the stock battery.
There is plenty of conflicting information about battery stats, but I've found bump charging and clearing battery stats to be helpful on other phones, even if that's just a perception thing.

I have crappy battery life on stock with minimal use, bought the extended battery and it was much better. Only issue.. i bought an otterbox defender lol.. so had to go back to stock so just frequent recharging.
I think the answer is because the battery just sucks. Its way undersized for this phone. It's hard to get a real handle on it though because everyone thinks of their usage has normal or heavy, so the accounts you read are tottaly irrelevant to how you use it.
I normally am screen on and 3G for 45-60 each morning for some news and slacking before getting to work. That will eat half my battery, which is completely unacceptable IMO. On a weekend when I pick it up a couple times an hour for a this or that, I still only get like 10-12 hours.
Our only hope is that the next phone that takes the place of the rezound has a higher capacity battery that will work for us like the deal with the thunderbolt. Otherwise, ill continue to haul around adapters and my New Trent battery whenever I'm going to be away from home for more than a few hours.
Incredible. And I hates extended battery unless they low profile like the g nex one! Anyway. Gonna try wipe battery in cwm ...thanks

Run my screen that low constantly unless I'm in the bright sun. Auto is a battery killer. Have no desire to use an extended battery. If they started using fixed batteries they would be driving away a lot of customers. Motorola is the last manufacturer anyone needs to emulate!

really? I am intrigued by the razr maxx simply because of the 3300mah battery. Not to mention, everyone raves about the new software moto phones have that allow you to set profiles.
I just don't like the pentile screens.
And I don't think a 3300mah battery would drive away many people. That battery would last 99% of the smartphone users over 24 hours.
The 3300 mah sounds great. The fact of not being removable is a modder's nightmare. Moto's encrypted bootloaders and god awful motoblur are major turn offs. Not to mention that all their handsets since the DX have a terrible feel.
The extended battery is nice, but I only use it when I know I'll need it because it destroys the contours of the device and makes it even more of a brick than it already is.

That made me laugh, that's like having a gorgeous car but never taking it out of the garage. You have a beautiful screen but at a brightness that low you can't appreciate it. With the extended battery I leave mine at full brightness or 75%, with the standard battery I keep it 60% or less.

Amaze is a power hog and other issues

So, I made a switch from HD2 running android to Amaze hoping it will have a better battery life coz of its juicy more 1730mAh battery, more power efficient s-lcd screen and the fact its an native android device (which the hd2 wasn't) but its been barely 2 days and I'm seriously disappointed with it.
I'm have a moderate usage which includes calls, pandora, youtube and net surfing but it barely lasts till evening and the usage is actually less than what i did on HD2 coz I don't have put any games on Amaze yet. I had lots on HD2. With HD2 I could easily pass through the day and still have about 10-20% battery left at night and this was on its anemic 1230mAh battery
I do realize the HD2 was rooted and was running CM7 and had all kinds of custom kernels and stuff. So is stock Sense and HTC kernel the culprit here ?
I've already ticked in the setting for Power efficiency under power settings which turns off auto sync (I have google and facebook sync same as I had on HD2) and using auto brightness with the least setting, but neither of them are helping
One thing I noticed in current widget log and current widget display, is the power drain in standby hardly goes below 100mA anytime ? According to me, this seems to be the issue hogging the battery as on HD2 it used to be <10mA most of the times with occasional spikes...but in Amaze every value is like more than 100mA. Does the faux kernel and custom ROMS helps with this, a lot ?
Ideally I should try it myself and see, but don't want to unlock the bootloader and stuff just yet as if the things are going to be like this, I may as well sell it and put in some more money and switch to other side (sgs2)
The other theory I have is the CPU on HD2 is single core 1GHZ while Amaze is dual core 1.5ghz. Gingerbread doesn't have proper dual core support so things will improve when ICS comes ?
Also on a side note, is there a problem with earphones having L shaped jack on Amaze ? My primary headphones monster turbine pro which have L shaped jack don't have a very good fit in it and small amount of force seems to disconnect the headset from phone. Its really annoying, although my other earphones which have a straight pin don't have this issue. But its not the earphone problem either as I don't have this issue with turbine's in my mp3 player and HD2 ?
The stock battery was horrific for me so I bought the Anker 1900mah battery from ebay and It's far better than stock...I'm at 15 hours with 47% left...Tasker is helping a lil also.

Hmmm didn't think i would have to upgrade the battery just after buying it, although seems something wrong is with the battery though...maybe HTC just bloated its spec to 1730

Try letting the battery discharge completely until phone turns off, and then plug it up and let it charge to 100% without unplugging it.
My stock battery last 12-16hrs depending on use. I also have an Anker 1900mAH last a good 18-20 if I charge it inside the phone. If I charge it with the Anker charger it last about 8hrs.
Guys what about the current widget numbers ? Have anyone of you got it or can get it to see how is the drain like for you guys?
No matter how strong the battery, if its going to [email protected], it won't last very long. 18-19 hrs on after market 1900mAh battery isn't very impressive figure either
I'm not quite sure of this drain, is the fast 4g on Amaze the culprit just like LTE
Also let me know if you guys have stock or custom ROM ?

I would recommend opening the task manager and killing off some unneeded apps.

Guys, There are 2 school of thoughts about task manager...I agree task manager may consume more battery if you look into the theory how android works...but I've tried with and without task manager it doesn't make much of a difference from what I observed

Hi Glacier,
Thanks for the update That seems reassuring...
I've been researching on Amaze battery quite a lot, I think current widget numbers are misleading because even in Airport mode it shows more than 100mAh drain, which is not possible..
I've found out another app...My battery drain analyzer written by a fellow member here at XDA
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.WazaBe.android.BatteryDrain
It basically calculates the drain rate in %/hr, basically measures how much time does it take for battery to take 1% dip...
I've found for my amaze its close to 1.6-3%/Hr when in standby, when phone is not woken up during the period...I think its on a higher side but acceptable still...Can any member with a custom ROM/kernel also report his/her number..
BTW I've seen the numbers on TMO SGSII in their forum, this number is roughly the same there too ~ 2%/per hour for most users...

Low battery life!

My rezound is rooted. I am on clean rom 4.5 with the 3.13 kernel. Everything runs very smoothly and just how I like it.
I also have the OEM HTC extended battery in my phone and my battery life is still bad. It doesn't get through a day.
Am I missing something here? Maybe a bad setup? Any suggestions? Comments will be greatly appreciated!

I do a lot of audio streaming at work which is really hard on battery life, but with the 2750 extended battery I do make it through a full day at work. Now, today my battery dropped to 50% charge in only a couple hours use & I only turned the screen on briefly to text a couple times........
Go to the phone menu and set it to LTE mode (w/voice) will use less because there is no 3g connection running at the same time.

Thank you all for your inputs. Yeah I use 4g heavily and my screen a lot. I take full advantage of the phones capabilities. I have another question though.
Is there a script to flash in order to recalibrate your battery? I know there are some apps. I've tried a few and I didn't notice much of a difference.
Thanks!

There is a script to recalibrate the battery. I looked inside the script, and it just wipes battery stats, so you don't have to do it inside Recovery. However, the apps that wipe stats on the Market do the exact same thing as the script.
I personally am S-Off with the latest leaked RUU. I am on the latest CleanROM DE ICS with the OEM extended battery. I get great battery life. If I wasn't using my phone much, I'd easily make it through two days. The way it is now, I get moderate to heavy use and easily make it through a single day.
I don't run live wallpapers, I keep the widgets to a minimum, I only use Gmail for email, no Social networking services are active, and I have some system apps frozen.
I do have a crapton of apps installed, but very few that have notifications. I remember back when K-9 Mail was eating up battery like crazy. Look for culprit apps like that, there is usually something.
Honestly, coming off my old OG Droid Incredible, anything more that 4 hours of battery impresses me. I am an -extremely- heavy user. 4G, auto brightness, lots of web browsing and games, and my battery temperature often hits 115-120 degrees fahrenheit when gaming. I can pull 4-6 hours on a stock 3.8v or 3.7v battery. I have a second battery and a charge cradle, as well as a 1 amp car charger. I find I'm never away from a power source for longer than that. Further, I just bought a 5000mah battery pack to emergency charge all my gadgets. My recommendation is to drop $50 on a second battery and charge cradle. Battery becomes irrelevant.

Better battery life?

i remembered there was a flashable zip to make the battery life better, but I can't seem to find it.
anyways what i've done so far is put the brightness to low, turn off gps , put the animations to .5 , sync emails every 2 hours , only have one widget running , installed the latest faux kernel .
It helped a bit , but nothing too noticeable. Any more things i can do to make it better? any tweaks or anything?
which rom are you usingg?? turn off auto sync, disable check for update.. also your battery can wear out over time, can purchase new battery... most people recommend anker battery,

I'm using juice defender with good success. NRG ROM has pretty good battery life anyway (compared to stock).

i always felt like JuiceDefender killed the battery more than conserving it. Along with everything else thats been stated, I usually use System Tuner to lower the clock speed when the screen is off, helps save battery when idle.

It did not seem to work with my HD2, and I did not use it originally with my Ruby. But now it seems to work fine. I mostly use it to turn off the mobile modem (seems to be my biggest battery drain) except when the screen is off and once per hour to sync my various programs. Using this configuration I can last all day, even with my cheaper replacement batteries.
But nothing is going to make the device go if one is keeping the screen on (like gaming). 3-4 hours max in that setting, and I still carry two spare batteries for those times my son gets his hands on the device.

I don't know what you are talking about but I get crazy good battery life... Here are my stats from 2 days ago I took a screen shot of... And I don't use juice defender and I am using teamvipers sense 4.1 rom and i have around 180 user apps installed on my phone. I just don't use data but my wifi is on all the time (don't have a data plan) and I play temple run and empire defense a lot hence high screen on time. Major thing about the rom I'm using is that it's very efficient when idle. I also keep my capacitative button lights off permanently as I think that also helps my battery life. Only downside is that I don't have working bluetooth in this rom

Well, yours is unique. Most people have pretty poor battery life. I've had 3 Amazes and all of them really drained the battery when the screen was on. However, as I said, my GSM modem is what really drains the device as well. If you live near a cell tower or in a downtown area with good T-Mobile, the modem won't "hunt" and will deliver better life.
Also, the stock battery is the best, in my experience.

I am actually on vacation and using aunt's sim who lives in new York and i live in Wisconsin (Marshfield) and t mobile doesn't exist here literally I am always using at&t signal and I have relatively spotty signals but yes I am not using data as my aunt doesn't have data plan so that also contributes to better battery and I live in a very rural area (there are more cows out here than humans...)

2g doesn't really drain too much battery, but it's still always a good idea to turn data off when you don't need it. The rest depends on the rom you are using but again there is no set number... From what I have read I am an odd ball with the battery life (and am not complaining). I assume you live in karachi? It's not even worth it to pay for 2g...I read somewhere that 3g will finally be rolling out to mobile networks in Pakistan in 2013...but we'll see...

1. Turn down screen brightness, screen kills the battery on the amaze more than anything else
2. Turn off automatic sync, this is very helpful
3. If you're on a JB ROM then turn off google now, this will stretch your battery life significantly.

how to resolve the battery life?

I bought about three week ago this phone and I think it is very great but it has a big problem.....the battery life.
What can I do to resolve the short battery life?
Should I have to change the battery of this phone?
Or should I have to download an app that resolve the problem?
The ota 4.2.2 update from Verizon has horrible battery life. The majority of us are on custom roms and I can make it through the day just fine. You can try battery guru from the market and see if it helps. You can't replace the battery on this phone with a bigger one because it's internal and has strong adhesive attaching it to the housing.

Have you tried calibrating your battery? Run your battery drydry, then charge it up fully before using anything battery intensive on your phone.

In fact I use only 4.4.2 custom roms. Now i'm trying the kickdroid with sense 6.0 and I hope the battery life is much better .
However I will try battery guru.
Other news soon.

There's so much info out there on this very thing... The most drastic differences I have noticed in battery life are flashing through different roms and kernels. ViperDNA 3.5 has pretty decent battery life. I also adjust my auto-brightness to a super low manual setting and always have GPS and Wifi off.
I don't know if this is an option for you, but using the phone info app and changing from LTE to CDMA (PRL) makes a big difference in battery life for me. 4G seems to really take a lot of juice on this phone. Might just be the low signal strength where I'm at though.
Yeah battery is a stinker on this phone, I am lucky enough to have power outlets and battery packs, my sgs3 had a broken charging port for a year, so I am in wonderland with a phone that actually charges... I have had the battery in the teens for half a day before with basically everything off but cell and it kept chugging until I got home.

One way I have found a fix for battery life is putting a custom rom and kernel on the phone. With my current setup I can get 3 hours of screen time on my phone and can easily make it through the day on one charge.
I currently run cyanogenmod 11 with the 5th snapshot and I loaded crpalmers kernel. Everything is super smooth and like I said battery life is amazing the best I have ever seen while using this phone.
If your willing to try that you will see amazing battery life.

I use the HTC Droid DNA this way, the battery life is more than 2 days:
1 / Turn off WiFi, 3G, 4G when not needed.
2 / Adjust the brightness of the screen is less than or equal to 50%, then check the box Automatically adjust brightness.

I also use the ViperDNA 3.5. If i need the battery to last all day I lower brightness, turn GPS and WIFI off as other have mentioned and i also shut off AutoSync. I've used Battery Guru and Greenify (root) and seems to do well. takes some fine tuning. I try a bunch of different things, so hard to tell which is helping the most
