Hello,
How to change theme?
I browsed themes threads but there is nowhere simple written how to do that. I've seen some themes for CM9 or others but I want for just stock.
By saying theme I do not mean changing app drawer and some icons via 3rd party launcher. What I mean is change of every element of GUI - button size, button shape, color of "progress bar", colors of checkboxes, animations ect.
I noticed it is very, very, very hard to change there in Android. Why's that? Even old Symbian 60v3 allowed users to change full theme during phone's work without any system flashing ect.
I've seen some theme changer - metamorpher - but it seems it is already dead.
So... how to achieve what I want? Is it only available via flashing new ROMs?
Where are themes for stock owners of system? I've seen mainly for CM9.
It'd be good to write some tutorials for n00bs like me - honestly I couldn't find any related to my question - perhaps it is due to xda is enormous forum, not too readable at all with that all non-default font chars everywhere
Cheers.

Perhaps this is why I didn't reply to this thread when I read it the first time. If you can’t guide someone, you don’t have the right to be rude to them. Taunting and being rude won’t do any good to anyone. A politer tone could be used to guide someone.
Thanks for efforts - I read themes forum but there is no direct statement in FAQ or something - example "these themes are for stock, these are for CM9". I know there is prefix in thread title but how does n00b know this prefix means it is absolute and only for example CM9 or can be used on other ROMs too but it is not confirmed or tested.
I didn't mean to insult anything - people make great efforts to morph our phones into better, however from my n00b view some things are not written clearly.
From the time perspective for me it is easy to install ROM via Odin.
But I remember when first time wanted to flash it.
Almost nowhere clearly was written from what start searching new ROM? WHat do numbers XXLPS9 mean ect. I had to browse many threads (really many) to gather one full information. It took me long time - it can be seen funny and now reading some posts I know what most of numbers mean but from the perspective of fresh r00kie n00b it was hard.
Just because there was no such info.
Regarding themes it is similar situation - many threads with themes for various ROMs. But nowhere is written directly how, what and which theme for what ROM should be used.
Everyone knows for semi experienced user such info like in threads are is enough, but for fresh meat changing theme is crazy like hell. In this aspect Android doesn't help - it is really 100 years behind Symbian 60v3 in themes applyying procedure.
BTW - I had two bootloops because I changed fonts.
I will continue to browse themes threads and gather all info and try to mix it up.
Cheers.
You're 100% correct, what I have found here on XDA is you're on your own to piece together all the info you can. The problem is all the info is mixed in with SO many BS posts. ("You did this wrong you did that wrong" "You posted in the wrong section" And of course mixed in with all the internet tuff guys etc. etc.) I see what you're trying to do and it would be GREAT! I would highly recommend you do put together a detailed thread with all the info in one thread!!! I don't know if you seen this thread by Vert here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19098932
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, i'm trying to learn all this my self. GL

99% of the questions asked here, have been asked before. Most noobs;" not all ", cant be bothered to do a simple search. They want answers and they want them now. I have lost count hows many times i have repeated the same old answer to the same old question by yet another lazy noob. Google search is an amazing tool.

[Q] Most Stable, most compatible, most feature filled ROM? <ABRUPTLY TERMINATED>
Hey guys,
I have a very quick question, I want to know a ROM that is most stable, that has a lot of tweaks within a tweak manager, cool effects and keeps ALL the Galaxy S II functions (Camera).
I've tried CM7.1, I guess it's a great ROM to replace old device's ROM, but there are many functions removed from the stock Samsung ROM (Task Manager when hold home) and the Camera app (most important for me).
I'm just looking for the most stable (least or no bugs), cool tweaks (CRT/Overglow effect/Overclocking) and one that keeps Camera app to the stock one.
Lastly, if I were to flash a custom ROM, would I be able to flash back my speedmod kernel?
Thanks all
Nicholas
p.s. I would also be very happy if it came with CWM5

Sorry, I know MANY ROMS out there, but I want to know by first hand experience about everyone's thoughts about many of the new ROMs and the most stable ones that recently came out. I just want people's opinions, and not a written guarantee on a forum post. I'm very sorry if I caused so much of a nuisance.
If you want people opinions, why dont you spend time reading through the threads of those particular roms, they will give you all the feedback you need....

As I clearly stated before, I have flashed CM7.1 and have not bricked. I don't think I'm incapable of flashing, as I flashed many phones recently, and I made many USB jigs for my phone and my friend's phone, I'm not that kind of Android newbie as you think I am, I used MANY Android secondary phones in the past since Android 1.6, and I flashed many different kinds of ROMs on many other devices ever since.
This thread is only asking for NEW opinions on the latest ROMs for the Galaxy S II, I want to know through experience if you like it or not, if it's good to use and if it still retains complete factory functionality.
Amazing.......I actually would of thought people who actually value their time, would just write one word like "VillainROM" or "CM" or "Cognition" and then make it to be 10 chars in total.
Thanks, what amazing people here.

I'm pissed just like him when I see the same carbon copied thread: "hello guys, because i am a very important person, i deserve special treatment and I want you all to find me the best rom, which fulfills the following requirements: x,y,z."
Come on... there's the forum, there are 100 similar threads open, read the descriptions, do something.
Well, it is a very generic and most commonly asked question as I checked around the forum, it would be best if a ROM list was stickied, so these types of questions would be eliminated.

True that JJE, I would hate when that happens - when people don't know what they're doing, brick their phones, and then start a new thread asking for help. I understand.

But anyways, the thread I linked was stickied and was very helpful.

I'm a semi noob who has flashed a few ROMs and have read through alot of the threads in the developers forum trying to find the 'perfect' ROM for me. I'm currently running VillainRom 3.0. It works fine. However, I understand what the creator of the thread is looking for. I would also like to know what other people think is a great ROM and a brief explanation of why they like it. All the ROM threads in the development forum are full of people asking why this or that doesn't work or how do I fix this? I find it hard to find a reason to use any particular ROM from the information in those threads. To cut a long story short, why don't the elitist ROM wankers keep their comments out of these 'Best ROM' threads, even if it's been asked before, and let people who want to share information do so.
Oh yeah so VillainROM 2.5 and 3.0 are good ROMs. They've worked fine for me, and from what I've read of other ROMs I haven't been convinced to change yet.

Ya my other favorite one is when they ask which rom is the best.
I feel like asking them, so if I tell you to jump off a bridge will you do it?
If not, they why would you take what I say as the best rom as the gospel?
Roms are such a subjective thing. Some people like some things some like others.
My first Android phone was a G1, so I was pretty used to the "stock" experience. Even when I rooted, I stuck pretty much with Cyanogen.
When I got the bolt and realized Cyanogen was not really "available", I got into BAMF and I gotta tell you, they did a pretty impressive job with sense.
Before I would have just laughed at someone if they said sense was the way to go, but I really kinda like it now. So I know that even my viewpoint has changed somewhat.
I don't understand why these people cannot just go out and make up their own mind about which rom they like by just flashing them and trying them out. If they don't like it, they just nandroid back to what you had before they flashed the new rom.
I wonder if they all look like lemmings? Hmmmm.
I get so tired of people running AOSP ROMs creating new topics and stating in just about every AOSP ROM thread that they can't get a lock on their GPS...
Drunk texted from my CM7 Bolt

Hi all! I've been checking out this forum for quite some time now, and been following a ROM thread quite closely for the past week or so, so thought it was about time I got an account! Currently got a Galaxy S2, which I love.
I'm by no means a developer, but I'm also not a complete n00b and know my fair share about computers. Done a bit of programming on and off for a few years, build my own PC's etc. I previously had a HTC Hero, and I rooted that and have flashed several ROM's and Kernels over the past 2 years. I would like to learn a lot more though. There are a lot of things I don't understand.
I would like to know more about how things work concerning custom ROM's. What is it Kernels do exactly? What is AOKP? (Found some information on Google, but nothing that made a lot of sense). Modems are another thing I'd like to know more about.
I know a lot of the questions I have have probably been asked several times on the forum already, so I'm not going to ask for direct answers, but if anyone has any links to helpful websites that could help me on my way to learning more about the Android system and what you developers do I would greatly appreciate it.
Anyway, nice to meet you all, and I look forward to talking with some of you and contributing where I can.
Thanks,
Carl
Welcome to the forum!
First, read all the FAQs out there, recovery guides, how-to's... Everything before flashing
The Kernel (in the flashing process, it's the zImage, just like in Linux) is basically a bridge between the software and the hardware. It's basically what connects the NAND (the phone's HDD) with the hardware components like WiFi, Antenna, etc, and provides info, stats, commands and etc about them.
AOKP stands for Android Open KANG Project, and is kind of a Kang port.
Modems (in a flashing package, it's the PHONE file) is pretty much what "controls" the antenna section of the phone, which is WiFi, 3G/H/H+, call connection, etc. There are many modems out there, and I believe that the best Modem for the UK in Android 2.3.x is KL1, and for 4.0.x, XXLPQ.

Where in settings is option to set how long capacitive lights stay on?
you have to more specific..There is alot of jelly bean roms floating around..And some are different..Perhaps rephrasing your question, you'll get a quicker response?
Well I thought my question was pretty straight forward, I ask here so as to not cloud the rom thread (they ***** hard about that)
Just like in a normal stock gb/ics rom, in display you have an option to set how long to keep the capacitive buttons lit: 6 seconds, as long as screen on, never, etc
Question is simply where is this option in jelly bean?
How crazy is that people get upset when people post frivolous questions in the "DEVELOPMENT" section? Who would have known? What fascist Nazis!
OP, you still didn't answer the question wish777 asked you. Instead you choose to be arrogant. So in turn I will not answer your question even though I know the answer.
how do you know which jelly bean rom he has? or is that setting in generically the same place?
saywhat10 : please specify which from you have... and someone familiar with that particular rom will answer. thanks

If its a question that somebody doesnt know, and wants answered, how is that frivolous? The problem in the developer section is that they assume everybody is some techy and is supposed to know everything.

How was I arrogant, i simply rephrased it like he requested. A 2 year old could understand my question I asked. Plus he didnt actually ASK me a question or ASK which rom I was on if you can read. You simply implied he did, but he didnt directly. He simply asked me to rephrase which is incredibly VAGUE. So i chose what to rephrase, was totally in the scope of his request
But i can be arrogant: Only kids play games like responding saying you know the answer but wont give it. Can beleive you took a simply question i asked and just ran with it for no reason
But Jimbomb, i'm on slimbean, but was on the impression that its a stock option, generically in the same place, independant of which jelly bean version. All the ICS roms they used they were all in the same place

I'm currently using slim rom as well..I don't even see that option within this rom...?..thats strange...
No one is trying to play games bud....its just easier to know what jelly bean rom your on...There is no default jelly bean rom.....if you want to be specific your on jelly bean/cm10 to be honest...all the roms are using jelly bean as a base, with or without cm10...I'm not trying to be mean,Am only trying to help you?..if I knew more info, It would be allitle easier..but I can't or anybody else, because we don't know what rom you were on...

I didnt say you were playing game, i said the other guy was (simply replying to say he knows the answer but wont give it)
And again, the light settings is in the same place for all the GB and ICS roms,so going with that i assumed the actual rom name was irrelevant, since its a basic feature of all roms.
Now I'm definitely not giving you the answer.

thanks, but on this jelly bean, theres no "advanced" after going to settings
First, its pretty standard procedure when asking a question to provide as much detail as possible such as what ROM you're on and what mods you're using, not just JB. That you did not.
Second, the development section does not require you to be a techie, it simply requires you to be observant and able to learn by reading, experimenting, and drawing your own conclusions.
Third, you basically answered your own question, which goes back to drawing your own conclusions from reading and experimenting. You stated that its available on stock ROMs. The duration setting is available only on TW based ROMs AFAIK, which you seemed to have observed. Since CM9/10 aren't TW based, they don't have the duration settings. The option to turn on or off is available on CM9 ROMs and CM10 ROMs that include the advanced menu under settings. If your ROM doesn't have the advanced menu, then the developer hasn't included it.
Remember, developers build these ROMs for themselves first, then generously share them with us. The answer to every 'why isn't this included?' question is that the developer simply hasn't included it. Just keep in mind that the developer built it for themselves on their own free time, and that you aren't entitled to anything, and you can politely suggest to the developer that a feature be included. Expecting and demanding won't get you anywhere. You were expecting this feature. If you're not happy use something else.

Who the hell demanded anything? I simply asked a simple question in the correct Q & A forum
If you read I said I thought the answer was rom independent, do you know what that means? Then you are harping on me not saying which rom I was on but looks like it didn't even matter which one im on because the option doesn't exist on any dag on note jelly bean rom!
And if I knew the answer why the hell would I even ask the question in the first place? Use common sense please
And then you say we don't have to be a techie, but make a techie answer! Very funny math my man!
Only a techie knows how each stock cm9 cm10 aosp aokp works, I don't! So i asked a freakin question here!
Stop being so pressed to come on to flame people just because they are not a know it all like you!Either you wanted to give me an answer to my question or not, all that other stuff is totally unnecessary!!! This is what blows this whole community
I was trying to help you out man. This whole blowing up at people doesn't help anything, which I've consistently seen you do in the past. I was trying to tell you not that you knew the answer, but that you had already observed everything you needed to draw a reasonable conclusion that CM9/10 ROMs don't have the ability to set duration. My answer wasn't very techie, and I don't consider myself very techie, I just was trying to give you advice on how to better solve your own problems. You don't need to be a techie to try out the ROMs available and see what each one does/doesn't include.
Sorry about the last couple sentences, I realize they were harsher than they needed to be. But the rest really wasn't aimed at you, it was general advice about drawing your own conclusions and whatnot, which everybody can use.

I'm inclined to side with the OP on this one. I've noticed that a lot of active members here can be dickish towards new members with valid, albeit naive questions.
The whole community reeks of elitism, but I can look past that myself cause it's such a useful site. I'm not trying to fuel the flames, just pointing out what I have observed. None of the antagonism has been aimed at me, as I like to do a good job of supplying as much detail as possible when I post.... but still.
Ok guys. wuuussssaaaa. I can see both sides of the argument. Some older users can be a bit touch (which welch was not.) He gave you the answer to your question and explained why you did not find it.
As for being a techy know it all. There is no such thing. With the way the mobile OS is evolving, you are always learning something new. Now for your question, A search would have given you the answers you were looking for. As per the rules you agreed to when you joined. You did read them right jk lol.
You have to remember this is not just a Development forum but one of the biggest in the world. You will find techies, techie jargoon, and other things you dont understand. Take the time to learn, it will save you tons of frustration.

Ok so the answer is to use the search button to find my answers? Really? So why the hell does this forum exist? Technically all answers can be found by searching right? So Answer me that
BUT I did search whether you believe me or not, if I had found my answer common sense should tell you I wouldn't have made this post!
So again, if we can find answers by searching, why should anyone post a question in this forum?

Well considering that there are over 4 million members, then yes. The question. Has a good chance of already being asked at some point or another. Do you really think your the first to notice the missing option?
So you search first. And then on the off chance you can't find anything even remotely related to your question, then you open a new thread

I am fairly new to rooting so far I have explored app removal, have created full back ups, performed a restore, have flashed a few zips including the new 4.2 camera. Now I want to move on particularly with a view to increasing speed/smoothness etc for which I know that I will need to flash a ROM and or kernel. It is not the how that bothers me so much - lots of good advice here I have TWRP installed, have ODIN both desktop and mobile ODIN, but WHICH to try. I am currently on JB 4.1.2 stock rooted with an i9300. Through different apps I can find lots of compatible ROMS listed but almost no information about which ones are considered good and why. Clearly I want to start with one that is better, or at least as good as, my current stock but none of the listed ROMS say anything much about their features. There is a little sparse information about Kernels but not much for a person starting out to flash their first ROM. I have searched on here for any kind of comparison table, but if there is one I am either searching in the wrong forums or not wording the search well.
So I wondered if people could share their favorite ROM/Kernel and a little about what it can do or point me to a reliable online comparison.- obviously one with 4.2 would be good but even a 4.1.2 improvement would be helpful
no. read the rules

I glance through forum rules in the same way that I read terms and conditions and instruction manuals - that is that I scan them for anything that may be important and refer to them occasionally if I find I am doing something wrong. I would strongly suspect that many people do not even do this much. So having encountered a problem of apparently doing something wrong I took the trouble (once I had found them) to read fully through the rules here http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81 . In all honesty I cant see how my post contravenes any rule in that, as a newbie, I am just asking for opinions and sources for what I need. I could have just googled but the last time I did that I nearly bricked my tablet, and was told that this was the place to come for help and advice. I did follow the rule to search the forums first but that didn't turn up anything useful
My instinct was to post this in the developer forum but, since this clearly states it is for experienced user/developer discussion only, I didn't.
I don't understand why it would be so wrong to have feature lists and experience comments for what is developed here. I did find some very good descriptions from Omega and for that reason will probably try one of these first but it would be nice to know how others stack up and whether, for example, there are any other 4.2 ROMs out there.
I do thank you for taking the time to read my request.
Clive
Two posts prior to yours is a link to the thread concerning why best Rom threads aren't allowed
i recommend playing with stock roms first before trying custom roms. get to know your phone first.
flash
root
debloat
apply mods
etc
etc.
I have found that now - though not in main rules!

I have to say I don't understand why, despite the explanation, because the nature of a forum is that members can answer the posts that they want to and ignore those they feel are irrelevant. I think by comparison what I really mean is a feature list - after all the main for rooting a phone (other than "because I can") is, I would think, because (a) you want more control (b) you want to get rid of bloatware (c) because you want features that your current ROM doesn't have but which could be available (d) because you want to overclock the processor - within sensible limits, or not - All of these in my experience amount to wanting a "cooler smarter device"
I do appreciate that this is a developers forum and I will in future try and pay more attention to rules here. Would it be wrong to ask if any of the experienced developers here know where else to go for some guidance about what newly issued ROMs contain, not necessarily rating them but just saying what is different to stock. I have in mind the sort of information posted by Omega in the forums here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663656 If each ROM creator had something similar and they were collated together in a sticky forum it would be really useful - It would be something I would be quite happy to subscribe to with a fee, with the income returned to the developers who contribute. It would be so useful to people like myself who do not have hours of time and (at least until I have gained more confidence) the nerve to keep switching ROMS
Each ROM has a changelog for each release
Just read it
thanks for that good advice
I have been reading more and can see that I can probably flash most of the things I want to my stock ROM
I actually prefer this because I do like Touch Wiz over all the other launchers I have tried
My only concern is that so far I haven't been able update a stock ROM without going through the rooting process again and re-making all the mods - should I look for stock roms that have been rooted - each time I re-root with ODIN I am back with CWM recovery rather than TWRP - I haven't read the benefits of one over the other but I know that on my phone I can't read the CWM commands on recovery screen so prefer TWRP
I am sure that people must have found ways to update to new stock versions without losing root so will keep on searching - time is the biggest enemy as I have been four hours on here already today!

Before the thread is locked .
But this is a developers forum not a fix your phone or make it cool forum .
Users are expected to either have a basic knowledge and if not to bother to read the FAQS and Guides .

All listed for each rom in the thread .

That has been done in the past but as we still get multiple what's best rom posts it was dropped .
Its not nerve that is required its a matter of starting where all the experinced users and devs start by reading the basics .

Believe me I read about 20 posts before even rooting and spent three days building up the confidence to do it - even so my heat was in my mouth until it rebooted successfully. I think, as suggested by someone else , I will for now stick to modifying the things I want to change by flashing zips using Mobile Odin (I thought that was an app well worth paying for - really easy to use - I also like TWRP - I just hate the idea of having to re-do the root and most of these mods when stock 4.2 gets released. I have now found a few more detailed descriptions by going into the forum marked for developers only Omega's are particularly good. All these shop window type posts gathered into one place is all I think would really be needed - I just find it very difficult to search the forums because when I started searching on things like "ROM comparison" and "ROM features" I didn't see the post that has been pointed out since about why you don't do this. My foray into this has taken over four hours rather than 5-10 minutes

We all go through this, but you will get more confident.
The main thing to remember is if things go wrong, don't panic, walk away, put the kettle on, have a think about what might have gone wrong, reread instructions, check, check, check!
What you musn't do is randomly trying different things in a panic
