[Q] Question about modems - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

What exactly are modems and do I need to flash a certain one?

Modems are the drivers for your mobile data radio. And you can test out each one to see which works best in your area.

Okay, thanks, so they are like radios?
Also would I mess my phone up if I flashed the wrong one or is there not a wrong one just different ones for different areas?

Just as long as you use the one appropriate to your ROM, i.e. if you're running CM, use a CM modem. Even if you flash the wrong one, no harm, just flash a different one. Worst case scenario, just do a restore to a previous Nandroid. Check out the modem thread in original development for the different modems and a google map of people's recommendations based on location.

Two quick rooting questions

I'm going to root my friends GSII and have a few questions. I'm experienced with rooting since I've been flashing roms/kernels since my old Evo 4G and my current Evo 3D, but I am unfamiliar with Samsung phones. I've read the stickies but still was unsure about a few things.
What exactly is odin and what does it do? You can flash a rom/kernel normally through recovery right?
And last one, what is a modem? Is that like a firmware package that we have for HTC phones?
If you're going to do this you have to read around. Google will help you out big time

I have read around...I read everything for the rooting process as well. After everything I read, I have only those two simple questions. Is it really that much of a pain in the ass to just answer them? Whatever happened to a helpful XDA community?
I'm only saying this so you know how to do some troubleshooting if something goes wrong. If you Google "samsung modem vs HTC radio"or something it Will yield results. Also searching for Odin on wikipedia I know will yield results. This is xda, a developer site. You're supposed to search before posting whether it be Google or here because chances are people have asked the question before

For rooting or obtaining root access, I believe there are 4 options, all listed on the FAQ. It's your choice. For simplicity, I chose the first option.
Modem? Like radio, quality of call (?), quality of data (?)
Don't have enough technical knowledge to clearly explain to you, m8
To rest your case, rooting is easy.
Relax.

Odin is a proprietary software made by Samsung that runs on the Windows platform and is used to transfer firmware onto a samsung phone. You can flash firmware through ClockworkMod Recovery, which is built into the kernel portion of the firmware, but you cannot flash firmware from a stock kernel, you must first install a custom kernel which has CWM Recovery built in.

I'm not familiar with htc phones. Modem is like a radio on other phones. It is a separate piece of firmware that can be flashed separately, or along with other parts of the firmware, which handles the cell network interface, wifi and some other things.

Radios in HTC phones can't be included within roms, only RIL's can (RIL is software that matches up with the radio I believe).

i havent installed any modems yet. but i did change the apns that are in the aokp faq. it put me back to dload speeds of 6-8Mbps vs the 500kb - 1Mb i have been getting through att since october and the stock apns provided in the aokp rom. the modem itself i believe is included in the aokp rom.
i doubt any of that makes sense to you... but i tried.
and yes... some of the people around here would rather take more time to explain to you why they arent going to give you the info u need rather than just telling ya. i think it makes them feel superior. but hey... who am i to complain... they bust their asses to make the roms for us.

Aokp doesn't include a modem
I couldn't easily help him from my phone, he could have easily found this information though. It's not about the superior.

Modems

I don't know much about modems but I'm on cm10 right now and wondering if I need to change my modem at all. When I look at my phone it says baseband version I717UCLE2 is this the correct modem and if not how and where do I flash the correct one for my rom? I have searched but don't really know what I'm searching for, wasn't sure if the Tom included the correct modems, thx guys

Are you getting lots of dropped calls? If you already get good service there isn't much reason to switch.
If you want to do it it's pretty easy.
You use CWM or TWRP recovery or Odin3 on a pc.
Then you simply flash the modem zip and reboot.
Nope no dropped calls is that all a modem is for? I get good signal and all that as well. I don't want to fix something that's not broken. Thx for ur help

I would stay on that modem. Yes, the modem handles calls, sms, mms, data. If you are good with these services, stay with your modem.
Deleted since I gave bad advice.
False: Nandroids do not contain the modem.
To test one out you would need a zip of your original modern to flash back to, a nandroid will not restore it.
VoluntaryMan said:
If you're just curious you wouldn't hurt anything by doing a nandroid backup and trying the UCLF6 modem. If you get worse signal or anything you can always revert to the backup. I personally like being on the newest version of everything.

Like the lady said - it works fine.
It is possible to mess up by trying a modem.

There are many posts from users who borked their IMEI by flashing a modem. That number identifies each phone on the network.

AOSP modem for 4.2.1?

Just wonder what modem people are using for AOSP Jellybean 4.2.1/4.2.2? Should i just use the lastest samsung jellybean modem? Or is there a specific optimal modem?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
It's location dependent. Like everything else here, TRY IT
there is no such thing as a 'AOSP modem'
there are different zip files depending on what rom you are on, simply because of the different flashing methods between the 2...the actual modem.bin's are the same.

I personally use uckl7 modem, found it to be the best for my area rural California mountains. Just test each one out for while to see what the best one for you is. I don't think there is an almighty best modem.

Check your imei to see if it has been corrupted. It would be under About Phone

Check your modem. Try flashing a new one.

The modems can be flashed separately without changing your base firmware. Go to the modems thread in development and try some of the more recent ones. In the about phone screen, your baseband will be the modem.
Different folks get differing results in different geographical areas.

So all I have to do is pick one and flash with clockwork mod and see how it works for me?

Yep. That's it. Try several of them, or all of them. It's relatively painless. I actually have all of the zip files on my sd card.

Modems/Radios for this phone

Hi, I'm a bit confused when it comes to modems/radios. I currently am on i717UCMD3, and it runs pretty great on T-Mobile. But I want to find another modem to see if it's any better when it comes to reception. However, I can't find any other modems that are for jellybean. I was wondering if anyone had links or anything to other modems?
Thanks!

Read here, here and here proceed at your own caution
As long as its a modem for this device, you can flash away. Take em all for a test drive. Just flash modems, no need to reflash rom with them.

I am on At&T and have never had an issue with whatever modem comes with the rom. Then again, I treat the modem like I do the kernal. It should work with whatever comes with the rom. If it doesnt, for the most part, I wont run it. Right now I am running Hellybean. I was one of the first to try for our device. Lots of options and doesnt suck battery like the KK's.
