theming needs access to system files, and accessing system files needs rooting
You can try custom launcher and rooting won't really affect your update

Rooting your phone won't defect it from updating to ICS.
Just root your phone.
You can try : [MOD][ICS|GB] DefaultThemes.apk mod like you want.
This is my mod for stock theme manager... Install like normal app After reboot stock themes will restored...

rooting your devices doesn't have any effect on updating using SEUS or OTA but un-locking bootloader does...it will prevent your device from receiving official update from Sony....
anyway you can always lock/re-lock bootloader again in case you want update from Sony....

rooting voids warranty
many people dont root their android because it voids the warranty, and i know you can "unroot" it later on, but still i wouldnt like to mess up with it till my warranty is there. upgrade to ICS or no upgrade, i would stay away from rooting for the time being at least.
so can we get themes for unrooted LwW?
Thanks

If it's the offical firmware then by rights you don't need to unlock the bootloader as it's signed code.
Here in Sweden it's been released officially and can be updated using SEUS/PC Companion
But now when I got the official release can I root it?
I have followed this guide to unlock bootloader and root another Xperia Mini but this is for FW 4.0.A.2.368.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227149
Is it possible to root after updating to 2.3.4, FW: 4.0.1.A.0.283?
Check the Arc section, I think they have a method of rooting for this firmware that doesn't require an unlocked bootloader.

Sorry to say mate you cannot root this using soc or any other easy root method.
You have either to downgrade to build .42 using flashtools then root then update ota.
ONLY DO THIS IF BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED. YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE IF BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED.
If bootloader is unlocked then you can flash a pre rooted kernel which will give you root.
If you go to the se arc pages look in the stickies all the info you need is there with links to the tools you need.
Hope this helps

Tnx.

I unlocked by unlocking software which I paid for (I paid for network unlock, it bootloader unlocked optionally) and Sony says both PCC and SEUS would not work. WRONG! SEUS still works for me, I've used it about 3 times. Have you tried SEUS?

Why did you OTA after unlocking ??
Search the fota unbrick or see the sticky threads for the method. And never update over the air or using PC companion after unlocking
Sent from my Xperia Mini using xda premium
Never install OTA Updates on unlocked bootloader!
To get rid of it uninstall the UpdateCenter.apk
Its just one of those mini updates. 15.8mb its a system update,
Sent from my WT19i using xda premium
hmmm...if i still remember it correctly, open update center, there should be showing there an update...press menu button then press option/preferences....inside there you can choose to update via network or wifi only...choose wifi only...reboot then the update icon will disappear from your status bar....
to fully remove it, just uninstall update center from your system files.....
Luckily, you have still not updated it using OTA. If you do that, you will brick your phone!! Download root browser or any file explorer as soon as possible and go to /system/app and delete UpdateCenter.apk. You can also use titanium backup to remove it.
Do not worry ota update doesnt work after rooting with unlocked bootloder u may even brick... Only way is to flash

Hi guys,
I'm an xperia noob here. I came from a Samsung galaxy s3 and an LG G2 and I'm not familiar with modding the xperia phones. I would really appreciate if someone could redirect me to the latest root method. If I were to root, do I need to unlock my bootloader? What would I lose if I root? What would I lose if I unlock my bootloader? How do I return back to stock if I need to? I would really be grateful for the replies from you guys!

Not quite, but it's still pretty easy. If you're on the 4.4.4 .167 firmware you need to check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155
sorry my mistake, didnt know for that new firmware. But its still easy to do it, it requres only 10min of your time
Thanks for the newest root method, but what would I lose if I root or unlock bootloader?

If you only root, you don't loose anything. And with unlocked Bl you will loose warranty if something is wrong with the phone (camera function should be intact)

Either its possible or not, when a number of people on xda have done it I'd say its possible.
So less rephrase my post for clarity, in general OTA Upgrades are not possible on rooted devices, but a number of users have reported successfully performing an OTA upgrades to 4.4.4 on rooted devices without losing root.
