[Q] Razr Maxx International on AT&T - Motorola Droid RAZR

So I just imported a Razr Maxx from Clove Technologies in the UK. From all the frequency specs on the Internet, this phone should work flawlessly on AT&T for both 2G and 3G.
However, I am noticing that data is very slow on the device and sometimes says it has no data connection even though the phone is showing HSPA+ and full signal. Am I missing something? Is AT&T not fully supported. Also, the APN setting appears to be set to ATT correctly (wap.cingular).
I really like the phone but the data problems are frustrating.
Thanks,
Brad

were you able to get it sorted out?
I'm planning on buying an international Maxx to use on Red Pocket (AT&T MVNO)

It works but noticed the 2G to 3G switching seemed to freeze the data connection. I changed it to 3G only and its much better. Love the phone.

Mind posting some speed test results ?
Oh, so it drops data when going from EDGE to HSPA?
Have you received any updates on the international model?
Sorry for all the questions

Sure. Give me a couple hours and I will post.
Yes it was going from HSPA and HSPA+ to Edge GSM.
No updates yet but I love it. I actually came over from a GNEX running ICS and don't mind 2.3. I like Motorola's skin.

How is the Radio?

Samsung devices don't have the best history with Radio quality. I am debating an upgrade and trying to decide between a DNA and N2 on Verizon. I know the S3 and a few other recent Samsung devices have had problems with dropped calls, weak signals in fringe areas, etc. The DNA uses a Qualcom radio so it's pretty stable. It looks like the GN2 is still using their own in house radio design?
My wife's iPhone5 and my N2 seem to get the same signal strength everywhere we go.

After coming from the galaxy nexus anything would be an improvement. But, actually the radio has been great for me
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
The radio pales to the quality in the DNA (which is likely more due to antenna), but is miles ahead of the galaxy nexus.
Personally working in a 4G fringe area, I had better handoff on my thunderbolt than the N2. Both devices forced into 3G I think the thunderbolt performed better on 3g, while the N2 does better on 4G.

Just want to repeat this. On the galaxy nexus I had to keep my phone in 3G just so I wouldn't constantly drop data. This phone however has been great! My wife has the S3 and she also has great reception and data reliability so they must have fixed something.
It's the first Samsung phone that gets reception similar to my old Thunderbolt. My Droid Charge, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy S3 all got poorer reception than my GN2 and TBolt (the Droid Charge and the GNex were tied for worst).
Thanks for all the feedback here. How would you say 3G connectivity compares to an old Motorola Droid X (Current Phone)

LOL, no kidding (I have had both devices)
Personally, I think the GNEX was the biggest POS ever made.
I actually loved my Droid Charge (i still have it somewhere) and after a TON of mods and radio swaps etc it was way way better than I could ever get the GNEX to work.
That being said, the N2 radio is hands down better than either one although it is not as good as the Rezound I still use occasionally and about equal to or maybe slightly better than my Wife's Galaxy S3.

Funny, I've only had the Note 2 a few days and haven't been in any good 4G areas yet, but I find so far that it's much better than my Rezound. Where I live I only have 3G, with 4G being across the lake.. my Rezound would pick up 4g for 30 seconds at a time very rarely (like once a week), and never transmit data, but the Note 2 gets 4g from there off and on pretty regularly, at least in my house. It's 3G signal also seems more consistent, at least going by signal bars and how it "feels" to use (haven't actually compared dBm). The Rezound would routinely drop it's data, sign out of Google Talk, take forever to re-establish it's connection, etc. I HAD to use it on WiFi or it was basically unusable. The Note 2 so far has been great.
While I have Zero issues its the radio, if your coming from a Motorola Device, it's not as good. Motorola just has killer radios. That being said, I have had no problems with the Note 2
I'm in an LTE market in Maryland and my signal is horrible. I can be only a couple feet away from any building entrance and my signal goes out. No 4G, no 3G... just straight up no signal. And the thing that kills me is that the icon will say it's on LTE. I have to be literally standing OUTSIDE to get a good internet connection. And tethering?.. forget it! My connection is intermittent at best. Frequently drops out to the point where I can't even download from XDA via the phone's browser. Love the Note II, been onboard since the first Note but... this is making me think either I have a bad radio or my choice to switch to Verizon from ATT wasn't a smart one. I need PRL's people. NOW!

Coming from the rezound and a inc4g for a week, this phone is just as good as those radios. I can get a 4g signal inside my work where the S3 can't. The exynos set is absolutely badass on this phone and the reason I didn't buy a S3.

I beg to differ. I had the Razr Maxx before my Note 2 (and Droid X before that) and so far I'm getting exactly the same amount of signal everywhere I go. Best radio on a Samsung phone yet. Very happy with it.

I personally came from the Galaxy S3 and the difference in service quality is astounding. Before I got the GS3 I had a RAZR and had excellent service, with the GS3 I couldnt even send texts without hitting resend 5 to 10 times. I had to get something different so I went with the Note 2 and this phone has as good if not better service that all the Moto phones I have compared it with and has way better servixe that the GS3.

Gonna put a T-Moblie Monthly SIM in my Rezound to test it out

due to the globalocity of the Rez and my VZW contract ending in April, I have purchased a T-Mobile Monthly SIM card online and will be trying out the data/call quality/etc. The plan I am eyeballing is $30 a month for unlimited data/text and 100 minutes.
After much searching, I am expecting that when I put this sim card in, 2 things will happen:
1. the superior radio and leaked global rom will allow me to get HSPA+ speeds on TMO network, make calls, send SMS/MMS, dance, and be merry.
2. once I re-insert my Verizon SIM card, it will be as if I never put the TMO card in, and my plan (including unlimited data) will remain intact.
are these the proper assumptions?
That would be nice, but unfortunately the Rezound radios have (so far) been unable to utilize the tmobile frequencies. Until it is figured out (it has been deemed impossible as yet) you will only be able to use edge network. Calling, sms, mms, and data all work. But data will be stuck at edge network.
The stock global leak may take some tinkering to get all parts working. I recommend a gsm compatible rom, as that will prove the least amount of effort on your end to get up and running.
Fair warning: edge network is usable.. But going from 25mbps to 120kbps is not a fun transition. I'm doing it myself, presently. Awesome devs for the Rez are the only things keeping me from buying a new phone that I can't afford.
Also, just to elaborate on going backward, as long as you don't port your number over (as that would cancel your vzw plan), you will be able to clean flash a cdma rom (or restore a nandroid) to get back on the Verizon network. I have yet to find a rom that allows both modes with everything working just from swapping the sim.

[Q] Droid Incredible 4G GSM question

I'll try and keep this from turning into a book.
Basically I have a HTC Thunderbolt right now. It is being replaced under the extended warranty that I have with Verizon. Since they don't have any more T-bolts they are sending me a HTC Incredible 4G under my total equipment protection policy.
I have already ordered a Nexus 4 (being delivered Monday) and will be going to T-Mobile with that eventually bringing my wife over as well when her contract is up. The only reason I did the warranty claim was because my T-bolt was dead and I might as well get a free phone out of them before dropping them since my contract is up and such. That way rather than have a 1.5 year old dead T-bolt that is good for nothing but the trash, I would have a functioning phone which I could sell. Make sense so far?
So my initial thought was that I would sell the phone take the cash to recoup some of my cost of the N4 or use it toward buying my wife's new phone on the T-Mobile network. Then I saw something about the Incredible 4G being compatible with a GSM network and that if I modify the APN that I might be able to get it on T-Mobile with HSPA+. If that is the case I will just keep the phone and have a brand new phone for free for my wife rather than sell this one and buy a different one. When they ship out the new phone it will come with a Verizon SIM that I can use to get it on their network, my account is still active with them so I can call them and get and try and get an unlock code if I need one of those before I cancel my account and I can get any updates that may be out there for the phone.
Of course if this won't work I would rather sell the phone as basically a new phone, well it might be a refurb but I don't know that for sure because they said they had to send me a complete kit because I don't have a battery and battery cover that would fit since I have a T-bolt now. Though they may have complete phones as refurbs.
So if it will work, what will I need to do before I cancel my plan? Though there was that new law that went into effect the other day that makes it illegal to unlock a phone.. But if I let Verizon do it I would imagine it isn't an issue.

I tried that. Here goes some different steps I took:
I started with cyyanogen last nightly build.
Tried switching all the different settings in the hidden men u (gsm, CDMA only prl) etc. Changed the bands from automatic to to aus2. No good except auto and USA. 2g
Did this on viper and got the options 800mhz and 1900 MHz. No good on 1900. 800mhz 2g. (E)
Used the very alpha miui ROM from the general section and got two different radio strength bars. One was 1x and the one above it (weird right) was 3g. Had signal on the 1x but couldn't use the phone right away. Had no service on the 3g (although it started out with 3bars and slowly went to 0 and stayed) changed the APN to tfdata. Got phone but no data. Had to put the phone back onto gsm only to get data. Which gavee just the one signal bar.

not in this case, you said you were not using your phone in stock, theres a bug where the 3g symbol got changed to g for gsm users, i read about it, statusbar theming on htc devices caused the h symbol to be swaped to g symbol, sorry about not being clear on last post
No. The g is definitely 1g. 5-15 KB a sec. All the symbols work I think because when I had Verizon on the same rom it showed the 1x, 3g, lte, icons, depending upon where I was. Usually lte or 3g. I'm going to get some go phone sims in a week or whenever they come in. The sim cards are cheap so I can change them out no prob. I just have ran out of $350 a month for phone service. I can almost deal with it Cuz its slow but very stout signal. Never dropped a download yet. I just don't like having to set up all my DL to run while I sleep. I'm used to lte ya dig!

You have to use a difderent sim card. There are people on here who know what oones tp get but they dont really like to. AT&T is supposed to work. Im not sure. You cannot put another frequency antenna on this phone without taking it apart and using a soldering iron. (Good luck!)

you are arguing with a very experienced person here. him and i both know a thing or two about phones and i must say, if he's sure its a bug, then it is. I am inclined to believe him too because we all know that HTC programmed this phone for a specific service initially, and they were not counting on it ever going outside the VZW network. That being said, there is no way for the phone to tell what network its on. Case and point... i just manually flashed my phone to the MetroPCS PRL and it still says Verizon Wireless... The network speed i get will not be shown as LTE even though i have it, because it only ever used GSM for LTE(which is partially GSM-based technology), not voice and data. So, on the stock rom, the phone is and will be "confused". CM10.1 works great and DOES know the difference. You will have best results by being s-off as i am.

My HTC Droid DNA abroad

Just sharing my experience with this phone as a global phone.
I nabbed myself a DNA before going to study abroad in London. The Verizon plan was hell to pay so I suspended my account -- $15 per 3 months -- and got a new SIM from giffgaff. Giffgaff gives me unlimited UK texts, unlimited 200+ kilobyte/sec internet, and 250 mins calling for 12 pounds a month. ~$18).
Setup was easy -- literally pop in the new SIM. No calling Verizon or anything. Was ready to go immediately and have had zero problems on the UK network. Reception is great everywhere except underground but hey what can you do.
Definitely recommend the phone for global use!

Good to know. While I have no travel plans in the future, being a life long Verizon subscriber I've never actually had a capable "world phone" before (I had to buy an absurdly overpriced pre-paid dumb phone last year since my TB didn't work in Spain) so it's nice to know I do now!
what type of network coverage do you get 2g 3g or 4g from them
The UK only has one LTE network right now (EE), and I doubt they're on the same bands as Vzw. So it'll be 3G.

I'm actually unsure what it is. I think it's like AT&Ts fake 4g (not LTE). I've seen it say "E," "3G," and usually it says "H."

Amazon is competely wrong then. It has gsm and cdma radios so it can work on any gsm network and it is already SIM unlock.

If you have any of the Sprint spark enabled phones you lose data connection ( 2g, 3g, 4g) while on a call, unless you're connected to wifi.
I noticed this too. Back on the S3 you could do both but now you can't.

The S3, EVO LTE, and S4(pre spark) could do it fine because they had 2 radios. They were sold around the time AT&T and T-Mobile were marketing the ability to do Talk and Data at the same time.
Since that time has passed, the new Spark Phones will not be able to do Talk and Data until VoLTE is enabled.. Yay!
It is a step back so I will be keeping my EVO LTE around incase I need the ability more often then not. :/

im missing my S3 due to this
I don't think this is a Sprint specific thing. My work iPhone 5 (On Verizon) does the same thing.. as others have said there is only 1 radio.. probably cost savings/power savings is why they are doing it.
It is a CDMA thing. The Radio cannot do Data and Voice at the same time on the same radio. GSM is completely different technology so it doesn't have this limitation.
On the Sprint/Verizon phones that could do this, they either had separate 3G/4G modems, or Duel 3G and a 4G modem. It didn't help Battery life when more than one is in use, but it did get around the problem of data while on voice quite well.
No Spark Sprint Devices have this however. They all have only 1 radio at the moment so until VoLTE is turned on, No Voice and Data.
All you've gotta do is switch to T-Mobile. I've got talk text and internet all the same time.

That feature only works on AT&T network.
It's not actually a CDMA thing only. It's has to deal with the chipset. Even T-Mobile and AT&T you'll lose LTE while on call as manufacturers have consolidated the radios.
Yeah i lose data when I make a call on sprint. But with my t-mobile, it just drops to 3g (hspa) which is faster than sprints 4g anyways...
My sprint LG Optimus G can surf and talk. I do it all the time.

Well I live in Philadelphia where Sprint here claims VoLTE already is available here and I still cant be on a call and use the internet at the same time. Sucks when my Note 3 did it with no problem. Love this phone alot. Now its a struggle to whether I get a Note 4 or Lg g3 stylus!
