[updated] Random Reboots - HTC Rezound

TL;DR check the last post
Has anyone else been experiencing random reboots lately? Mine seems to be intermittent, i used my phone for three hours straight two days ago and everything was fine. The damn thing just rebooted on me three times in the span of about an hour, two were within ten minutes of each other. I'm running cleanROM v1.4 with no cpu control apps, and I haven't changed anything in about 1.5-2 weeks.

Just did it again. I'm about to smash this damn thing against the wall!!

I'm running CleanRom 4.5 and have only experienced 1 random reboot. My girlfriend on the other hand is running stock gingerbread and experienced 5 random reboots yesterday. I asked her what she was doing at the time, and she was of no assistance. Definately something to keep an eye on!

I got pissed and wiped everything, then reinstalled CleanROM DE with only the apps I use frequently and everything has been fine so far, haven't had one yet. Maybe it was a buggy app or something else because during this time my extended battery said it was at 80% then after one of the reboots it said 17% and I was like wtf? After the clean install it said 66%!

Are you s-off ? if not make sure you are flashing the boot.img after installing the ROM. Or if you are on GB firmware your installing the firmware patch if installing an ics ROM.

Yea I have, it's nothing that simple sadly. At first I thought it was a buggy app so I wiped /data and only installed a few apps I use constantly, but it still happened. So I did a fresh install of the current rom I was on and didn't install any apps or restore any data, but it still did it. I just flashed another rom without restoring anything to see if it still happened and it did. I had an idea that it may be the latest radio image that caused it so I flashed to the one before the latest leak, but it still does it.
I'm currently in the process of flashing the original GB RUU to see if it still does it. If it does then I know it's definitely a hardware problem. If you couldn't already tell yes I am S-Off

So the RUU didn't fix it but it did lessen the reboots. Now when I wake the phone up while running Gingerbread the data connection will take a minute or two to connect and will drop out sometimes while the screen is on.
It rebooted on me last night. Also during the night it did a factory reset (or I did it in my sleep!) because when I woke up the phone was at the "choose your language" screen and after I left that all my downloaded apps were gone.
I also just got the OTA adr6425lvw_2.01.605.11-1.02.605.6 but it won't stick.
WTF is going on here? Do you guys think I need to do an insurance claim?

My GF's stock Rezound reboots pretty frequently too... Mine never does, even stock it didn't. After the last fiasco with VZW and sending phones back and forth she's not going to want to swap it out again :-/

While your on the stock unrooted untouched ruu do a factory reset from hboot. Then boot up reboot to recovery and flash your Rom.even though I'm soff I still reflash my kernel in hboot after wiping boot.

I'm giving it a try now and I'll see what happens, thanks.

Edit: In the past 8 hours I haven't had any random reboots or radio problems (yet), but the battery stats still seem to be wacky (another symptom I forgot to mention). I had the phone off because the battery was dead and I was charging it at my cousin's house. When I left I turned the phone on and in a span of about ten minutes it first reported a reading of 40%, I opened an app for a few minutes and when I looked at it again it was down to 20%, a minute later it was down to 9%. I decided to shut it off for a few minutes, took the battery out and put it back in, then after I booted up it showed 55%! I also had my extended battery with me at the time which I thought was full but when I put it in, my Rezound just went to the white HTC screen and after a battery pull it wouldn't turn back on so I figured it was dead. I just put it back in now and tried to charge it, it's actually at 94%!
I'm currently on GB Firmware, running CleanROM DE v1.4. Before yesterday (?) I have been on ICS Firmware since the initial leak of ICS IIRC.

It just started this crap again about 4 days ago, I was getting one per day on ICS. I ran the original GB RUU four times (twice, tested it out for a few minutes and noticed that data kept dropping out, then ran it again twice) and it still does it.
Before I ran the RUU I was on ConROM when it started so I flashed Nils latest work, when it started to happen again I flashed the kernel in TWRP, when that didn't work I flashed it directly via HBOOT (extracted the PH98IMG from the zip), which still didn't fix it.
I'm beginning to think that I did damage the radios during the S-Off process since I was one of the people that had been trying to run the exploit since v0.01, also during the later tries I realized that I was shorting out the wrong pins at one point After I switched to the correct pins and used v0.02 or v0.03 it works and I had S-Off.
I'm about to go back to S-On and see if it still happens.....

Just came back from Verizon and they're going to replace it for free since it's covered under the MFG warranty since the phone is only 8 months old.
I love how clueless their employees are: I told a guy that my phone was rebooting constantly and that that it keeps losing its connection to 4G (then demonstrated that it had lost it's connection even though mobile data was turned on and when I cycled it it would re-connect), he was about to mention a factory reset but I said I had done about 20 factory resets (didn't mention RUUs or anything) before he even got the words out, so he passed me off to their "tech guy".
Here's the real kicker...
I told him that the data radio keeps shutting off and it reboots constantly. His response was "the what?!" I told him 4G/the internet connection and that I've done numerous factory resets and he then said "we'll ship you a new one."
This is about the 5th time and 3rd different store where Verizon's employees have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. Half the time it isn't even tech related, I've schooled them on their own products and promotions multiple times (namely the 2 month return policy before christmas and the half-off extended battery deal [2 out of 3 employees in the same store didn't know that one])! It's pretty damn sad when a customer who reads Android blogs knows more about the promotions than an official Verizon employee....

Afaik all android phones do this. Buy an iPhone

Thanks for the helpful response! Ass... I had the original Droid for a year and the incredible for about six months, neither of which did this once. I've also had the Rezound since launch day, I could could the number of times it did this before a month ago on one hand!

If a phone randomly reboots in your pocket, or while you're sleeping... Would you know? I had 7 origional droids, 5 bionics, a rezound, a gnex, and a galaxy tab. I have yet to own an android device that doesn't randomly reboot. I have had devices up tor 11 days without it happening, but inevitability, it happened. I think its related to ram. I never really looked into, but its just a hunch. From what I see on my rezound it is just the shell rebooting and not the device. You are just too much of a fanboy to see that due to many factors, especially fragmentation, that android is super clunky. It is also generally bugged. I am typing this on my bugged sense keyboard, from my bugged WebKit browser. What made android good was open source. It isn't like that anymore.

Random Rebooting

I know this is a common problem as I've seen it in other threads on other sites, but I haven't been able to find a cause/solution. My Evo 3D randomly reboots, frequently. It has happened with every firmware version since I got the phone, and with every rom/kernel I have installed. It doesn't seem to be an overheating issue. I've tried uninstalling a few apps to see if they might be the cause. Basically I'm ready to call it a hardware defect. Does anyone have any idea what causes this or how to fix it? I bought my phone unsubsidized online so it isn't easy to return, but I may have to try anyways. My 3D is useless as it is right now.
Return it.....
Sent from my EVO3D
I bought it from eBay so that's not an easy return. HTC wants me to pay to ship it to them and they want my credit card number, then if they decide it's not an issue covered by warranty then they will charge me both for looking at it and also to send it back. Basically they will hold my phone hostage if they decide they want money from me. I have filed a complaint against HTC with the Better Business Bureau over their warranty policy.
If on stock ROM, return it. Sometimes on custom roms it reboots like crazy for me when using browser.
It reboots on stock and custom roms.
Return it...
I've talked to three people at Sprint and they won't accept it as a return. They say I have to take it back to the store it was purchased at, and though I've talked to the person I bought it from, he's in another state, so Sprint says I'm SOL.

Try different Roms. My buddies had the same problem. Flashed supra and flashed silver needle kernel. Flashing a custom kernel can easily fix it. The stock kernel argues with the stock OS and the phone is tricked into thinking there is harm. Therefore reboots to try and save your phone from any damage. For sure switch the rom and kernel.

Most reboots are due to using unstable software or user error, if these aren't in question then your phone is a bad apple

Have a look at the battery contacts. I have read of some people solving reboots by wedging in a piece of thin cardboard on the opposite end of the battery to give it more solid contact.

replace your sd card.
*EDIT.... just for the sake of being a little more informational and contributing.... a bad sd card will cause this. your phone, like a computer, can detect a bad disk and will reboot itself to check it.
i had the same problem when i first got my phone... i had my old sd card in there... random reboots. replaced the sd card, problem went away immediately.
i KNEW it was the sd card, though, as soon as i powered up the phone with the new sd card installed because on my old phone whenever i would transfer apps to sd i would get this error pretty often "failed to move application" and i would do it again and it would work.
so after i put the old one in my new 3d i would get that same error... along with the reboots, and thats how i figured it was the card.
so when i powered the phone up with the new card, i went to move my apps from the internal disk to the card and EVERY single one of them moved over the first try. and the phone has not rebooted itself once since then.
also, i heard somewhere that HTC sent some phones out with bad sd cards.... so if you are using the one that came with the phone, that could still be your issue. replace the card.
I had a horrible time with my 3vo rebooting, then got a replacement through Sprint TEP (a new one, thank goodness; ##786# tells you refurbished status) but I had the new one do the same.
Once either of mine had a single reboot, it would then continue to a complete load (booting properly) but would then reboot again after 1-5 minutes. After pulling/reconnecting the battery, it is fine for a day.
The old one had the initial reboot WAY more often than the replacement (the old one had several in a day, this one has had only one per day for the past 2 days).
How to fix: You cannot fix it. You can, however, get a good day before it begins its rebooting sequence. To so this, you have to pull the battery. I have waited until it has rebooted, then I hit shutdown and disconnect-reconnect the battery before restarting.
I hope the issue is taken care of and the initial reboot is gotten rid of.
This has happened on bare stock unrooted and rooted cleanrom 2.1 and 2.2. Also, with 2 different SD cards and 2 different batteries and 2 different 3vos. I have HTC's fastboot off.
Cause: My best guess is that HTC fastboot is not completely off even when unchecked--something differentiates what is loaded during a random reboot from what is loaded after a battery pull, but I don't know what. That, or something differentiates a shutdown and the reboot that the phone does when it reboots randomly. I could be wrong. My sample size is only 2 corrections, but it literally rebooted 12 times then stopped completely after the battery pull and the same thing happened one additional time.
I appreciate the insights you guys have given. I have pulled the battery several times and I don't believe it has done any good, though I will test that further. I am using a 32gb sd card that I purchased when I had my evo 4g and it always worked before, but I will try using the 8gb that came with the phone. The battery is snug and I even 2 two spare battery that also don't fix the problem when being used. I had a lucky 2 days without any reboots, then back to about a dozen reboots a day. So far it's happened with every rom I've tried.
I have noticed that the problem seems to get worse in areas where there is no reception. I took it into the hoover dam and it rebooted like 20 times. Also at Disneyland in different ride buildings where there's no reception it would often reboot.
Yes, marginal reception areas are usually, but not exclusively, where mine starts its reboot routine. The other is during the airvana handoff.
Neither the battery or SD card made any difference. It seems to be getting worse now. All I have to do is run an application and half the time it will reboot. I've tried wiping the system and cache and reinstalling roms. Nothing works.
I was wrong before. It is the shutdown that makes the difference. Difference got home and it began to reset itself every 5 minutes or so. I pulled tjw battery during startup and it did not break the rebooting.
After it finished reboting, I selected shutdown then poweres it back on. After it came back up, it stayed up and has been stable since.
It looks like this might be something I have to get used to. If it begins to reboot, I have to give it a clean shutdown to relieve the issue (well, for 20 hours or so, at least). Again, HTC fastboot is always off.

Random Bootloop

I RUU'd to Jan2012 OTA update, unlocked with HTCDev.com, installed AmonRa, rooted using AmonRa and everything has been fine....for about four days. Then yesterday, after using IM+ Free for a few days and liking it, I decided to buy the Pro version. Coincidentally, my extended battery was running out and I didn't have time to charge it at work, so I powered down, removed the battery, put my charged stock battery in and voila...boot loop. No signal at unlock screen, sits for 10 seconds, and reboots. I can do a factory wipe and it will boot, but if I restore anything...data only, system only, secure only...all 3, 2 of 3...doesn't matter...issue returns. Anyone know why this might be happening?
It's because you can't post in the right section!
Have you tried wiping and flashing a Rom? Not restoring
Edit: its probably because of a bad backup or because of the ota, its been known to bootloop
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Can a Mod please move this to general?
OT: Check the bootloop thread that will more than likely give you the answer you're looking for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394659
My apologies for posting in the wrong section.
My concern is that it was running fine, and then suddenly wasn't when nothing but an app install (IM+) was done. I don't want to go through setting everything up again only to lost it all again four days from now.
I am having similar issues as you are. Tried to charge a 3.8v stock battery overnight and it bootlooped all night long. It seemed like it settled down after putting back in my 3.7v extended. So I called HTC and created a rma for the battery, no big deal.
Then today listening to music while the phone is in the dock i had a few reboots/bootloops, noticed some odd stuff in logcat so I did a reset permissions in recovery. Seems better so far compared to before where it would only take a few minutes to bootloop.
*mine is not the network issue, but good to hear you fixed yours

Yes, sounds similar...however, I ran my stock battery for about two weeks with no issues, and ran the extended battery for a good month with no issues, and even ran fine for a few weeks after htcdev.com unlock, AmonRA flash and rooting took place. This all came about out of the blue.
Right now, I am attempting to use the guide specified concerning connecting to the wrong type of network. I'll update when finished.
------
UPDATE: That worked. It was a communication issue, the phone had changed it's connection preferences. The sad part is that I've been without a phone for almost a day over this, and flashed all kinds of kernels and recoveries, and even considered going back to Verizon for a replacement. The even sadder part is that I already knew of this fix and completely forgot about it. Thanks a MILLION to MrSmith317, not only for directing me to the fix, but also for not bashing me for accidentally posting in the wrong area of the forum.

Ugh Problems with the replacement

Since I got my rezound replaced because it was heating up and killing the battery, I got a replacement and Since then I've had nothing but issues doing things it seems,
First off, It doesn't seem to want to S-off properly, I did S-off my last phone and switched it back to s-on before I sent it but now this isn't even giving the time to use the wire trick. My old phone was S-off'd on ICS, I'm trying GB here and nothing gives.
Second off, My wifi module seems to be completely broken, I installed a gb rom and since then I cant get it back up and working again, even though I have been flashing the ones I have. Maybe they aren't correct.
And lastly but worse, Sometimes Randomly after the phone has been in sleep mode for a while, the screen just doesn't respond. Nothing I do until I do a battery pull works, has Anyone gotten this problem before? I switched GB roms and both times this has happened

You may want to flash a ruu to bring it back to completely stock. Whenever I start to have problems I do this, and it works.

Phone reboots several times a day v2.13.651.1, does anyone else have this issue?

Hi, I've scoured the forums here looking to see if anyone else had this problem. I found an old thread started back in May, but I am concerned with firmware 2.13.651.1 (the latest OTA). Since installing this update my phone now restarts 3-4 times per day, usually while idle sitting untouched on my desk. I hear a "buzz", look over and my phone is on the HTC startup screen. No rhyme or reason, just a completely random restart.
A little history, I had this problem OOB with version 1.13.651.1, it went away with OTA #1 - 1.22.651.3 (which had it's own problems, including lockup/overheating 3-4 times a day) and it returned with OTA #2 - 2.13.651.1. I am HTC Unlocked and have SuperSU/BusyBox installed, however I doubt those are my issue. Obviously I am running stock ROMs.
I've tested by doing a complete factory reset and letting the phone sit there idle on the startup wizard. Within hours it had restarted itself despite being untouched. I don't see a huge number of folks complaining about this issue here, so it must be hardware, yes? Do you think I got a bum unit?
I had this happen once today.. this is my second day on the new kernel.do not know if it was a fluke or related to your issue
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
That is definitely not normal. You may want to relock and take it into Sprint. I have never experienced a reboot and I've had my phone since launch week. Or try a custom roms like MeanRom and see if you have better luck. You're already upgraded to the new base so you can just download and flash it.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Yep. I'm on EVO LTE #5. Strange part 2 and 4 did not have reboots. 1,3 and 5 do. Drives me nuts and sprint techs are clueless. With the lastest update it gives you a log of exactly why it had the errors. Yesterday I brought the log to the sprint repair and he said it was meant for HTC, not them.
I'm otherwords, he had no clue on how to read the log.
I'm hoping they fix this crap soon..they will not replace the phone anymore yet they can't fix it. I hate Sprint
Edit. Mine is stock, have not had one working good, long enough to root
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Well, I took it into Sprint and yes they were clueless. Best they could offer me was to flash me back one version to the one the had blank notifications and overheated. I declined and went to HTC. They immediately issued an RMA. While I am not excited to get a refurb unit, I certainly am fed up with the constant reboots. Good thing I kept my old EVO 3D just in case.
FYI, I sent it back to HTC unlocked (but not S-OFF). I like to live dangerously.

Need Help...Note 2 Keeps Freezing

I'm hoping you guys can help. Been a long time lurker here and am going to be buying my Note 2 at the end of the month. But my wife purchased one the day after Christmas, and since the new ota update in January, her N2 has been freezing a lot. Sometimes you can get it to turn back on, but than it freezes and reboots on its own. Most of the time she has to do a battery pull to get it to come back on. It happens about 5 times a day.
Verizon had her factory reset it, but it still has the persistent problem. Best Buy took a look at it and they couldn't figure it out. She is hoping we can figure it out before we have to send it back in, which would suck because she would be without a phone that she needs for work for a week. Not to mention Best Buy and Verizon stated that if it does need to be replaced, that it would be with a refurbished one. Which I am not at all too happy about that. Hoping you guys can help me out.

I tried to get her to root, but this is her first android device, she's had nothing but the Iphones prior and is nervous about doing stuff like that. It started after the last ota update, and the only recent app she downloaded was Unblock Me. Since then all this has been happening, and we already uninstalled Unblock Me suspecting that was the culprit. I have it on my phone with no problems.

turn it off and see if it helps. that strange behavior is most likely caused by an app. Can you screen shot or list what apps she has on her phone?
Yeah I'm thinking it's power saving mode turn it off see if she can make it through a day without it freezing. You don't need power saving on a note 2 battery life is great without it unless your wife is like most females and always forgets to charge her phones
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Here's the list of apps she has downloaded. She hasn't downloaded anything recently except for that Unblock Me and the ota update. She said since yesterday Verizon had her factory reset the phone. She reinstalled all her apps, and it still kept freezing. When in froze this afternoon and it shut down(didn't reboot), she took it strait to Best Buy to have them look at it.
The guy fiddled with it, and it was freezing and rebooting on him as he was messing with settings. He told her it probably needed to be sent in. She doesn't want a refurbished phone if they replace this one, so we are trying to figure it out. But since that visit, the phone has not froze on her. Weird.
Should we uninstall all the apps and install one by one each day to see which may be causing it?
Did you turn power saving off and it still freezing?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
when I checked it, it was already off. I know she had it on, but don't know if the BB guy turned it off or if it was turned off by the factory reset.
If it's still freezing with power save off then I would factory reset it then install the apps that she must have for day to day use. Then give it a day and install the other apps she wants.

Phones normally only freeze when the ram runs out. Is there any app misbehaving and sucking up all the ram?
I had some what i thought were random reboots the first few months with my N2. These I discovered were caused by carry the N2 in my back pocket of my jeans! Every time I bent down to pick something up or to tie my laces it would reboot!! I would just hear the start up noise comming from my pocket. Make sure she doesn't put it in her skinny-jeans back pocket.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! It froze again this morning, so we are going to factory reset and install apps one by one each day to see who the culprit is. Hopefully its an app doing this.
I have been experiencing EXACTLY that and hqve tried most of the remedies. However this only seems to happen at work which makes it somewhat difficult to actuwlly sot down and diagnose the problem.

I have been reading about this issue from a lot of people with the s3 & note 2 on forums. I honestly think Samsung/Verizon sent out a bad OTA due to rushing to close the security loopholes. I refused the ota and found a way to permanently defer the update and have not experienced any reboots or freezing.
From my previous/recent experience Verizon will absolutely not help you at all, they are worthless 99% of the time. All they are able to do is tell you to factory reset it(if they know how) and have no actual clue how to fix the devices. They will even 'call' the software support for you but will still tell you to either factory reset or do a return. I am disgruntled after they destroyed 3 phones (Droid Incredible) in my family after pushing out horribly bugged OTAs that left the devices useless. I confronted them and they flat out refused to take ownership of their own software that they pushed out. I still feel like they should be sued over what happened.
Good Luck!

Yeah leave it to VZW to fix one thing and introduce a worst bug. I had a Motorola bionic that kept losing signal every 20 minutes or so then version sent out an update damn phone would drop signal every 30 seconds or not even connect to data. Basically rendering the phone useless. Worst part was Motorola had the bootloader locked down so tight there was no good development. At least we have good development for our note 2

Users should legitimately have a lawsuit case against Verizon. They are essentially forcing you to purchase a new device because of something they did. When I confronted them they straight up told me to buy a new device. Devices should work indefinitely theoretically and they are causing irreparable damage.
My note 2 was having major battery drain issues so I got my self back to pure stock like day 1 and I went ahead and updated with the ota so I will see if the random freezing / reboots pick up or not. I already noticed a keyboard bug where it pulls up a numerical only keyboard and wont allow me to type letters unless I reboot.
Did anyone solve this? I'm in the UK and very recently got my ota update. Since then I've been getting multiple daily resets and freezes. Can't say whether it's due to the ota update or some software I've been using, but the crashes are certainly pretty new and very annoying.
