[Q] Can't read many books via Kindle app - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there, I have an issue with almost all of the books in my Amazon cloud thing. When I try to load them on my tablet I get "The item is not compatible with this device" and I know what that means in lamers terms, but it's nearly EVERY book I try to read. The only one that I've gotten to work out of 39 is The Walking Dead comic volume 2. Any help please?

Shelves - does it work for you?

SHELVES looks like a great app to keep inventory of DVDs, games, books, etc. - similar to Delicious Library for iPhone.
Unfortunately, Shelves doesn't work on my Streak (USA 2.2). When I scan a barcode to add a DVD movie, it says "Couldn't add movie. You might already have it". Needles to say, there are zero movies in my library.
However, the program works great with books - scan the code and it find the correct book and adds it to the shelf.
Am I missing something in the settings? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

This sounded like an awesome idea to me when I saw this post.
I have about 500 DVDs in my collection and keeping them straight in my head has been a hassle for me for a couple of years now. This sounded like just the solution.
So, I put it on my Streak to test it. And, had the same exact issue you are seeing with it so far as my DVDs are concerned. Didn't even try the books. Only a hundred or two of them, and no problems remembering yet.
I get the same issues using DJ 1.7. Bummer looked like an interesting app.
Solution...?
Unfortunately, the last update for Shelves killed the app for many handsets - found it on apps feedback om the Market.
I could not find where to get the older version of the app - is it possible at all?
However, I am using a different app now, PackRat, free on the Market.
Not as visually attractive as as Shelves would be, but it works great!
I'm in the same boat with many of you guys. Lots of DVDs and Shelves only returns the BS might already be in your library error for me as well.
On edit- I downloaded Packrat and it does take a long time to get results, but it does get results. However, out of 18 DVDs it couldn't find 3 of them (3:10 to Yuma, Adventureland, and Hot Tub Time Machine). Also, out of 12 books it couldn't find 2 of them. Google goggles was able to find all the ones that Packrat was missing. Between the speed and the fact that I have hundreds of books and DVDs to catalog, I'm not sure this will work for me. The miss percentage is too high. I tried putting one DVD in manually, but I see no way to add a picture and adding potentially 100 DVDs manually would take forever.
Second edit- I've now attempted to use packrat to scan 50 more DVDs. It was able to find 26 of them. Again, these aren't indie titles, but mainstream titles like the ones I mentioned above. And, again, Goggles was able to find them. I'm done with Packrat.and still searching for an alternative to Shelves.
have you spoken to the developer of shelves?
most developers are more than happy to go through issues with you and try and resolve them if you're polite and thorough, and willing to help them with testing

[Q] Reading eBooks on SGS2 - syncing with PC?

I'm wondering if anybody found a god way to read books across PC/Android and hopefully Kindle while syncing the "furthest page read". Thing is, I can read the same book on my Kindle at home, then continue on my laptop, then continue on my SGS2..
I got a kindle, and I've been beating my head against the wall for the past week, trying to get it to sync my read progress among PC-Kindle-Android.
It works fine for books bought at amazon - but books I manually imported (.mobi, .azw, .epub, etc).
(Before you yell "arrest this man!", these are russian books I OWN, that are NOT SOLD on amazon).
PC-Kindle-Android sync kind of worked once or twice, then just stopped.
So, anybody got a solution of how to read your own ebooks while syncing it throughout PC and Android? (and hopefully kindle)

[Q] Ebook Reader

Hi, I just got the hp touchpad and I am trying to find a good ebook reader. I have calibre on my PC so I can convert to most formats. I tried out preader but it doesn't render the text very well and very laggy.

Did you try preader Native? I tried another preader version and wasn't happy. Then I found com.mhwsoft.preader-native_0.9.9_all.ipk at
precentral.net/preader-native-alpha (new user so I can't post links)
and think it will serve me fine until Android is ported.

prereader on the market was the best I could find and it was junk. I'll have to check that out.
Anybody figure out how to side load into the Kindle app?
Ya, tried that but it wasn't loading my .epub book when I added it to the library.
yep, that beta/alpha version of preader is best. Its still total junk but at least its free....really though, at the point that its that awfully inefficient the guy is probably better off trying to generate html and just toss it to WebKit. I mean come on, so slow and buggy with the progress.
I'm using the kindle app on mine. Barebones but works.
I ended up buying the Touchpad Demo version from RadioShack, not realizing that it would not allow me to access the HP Market. As such, I can't download the Kindle app from there. Anyone know how I can get it to my Touchpad? I think the apps for Wed OS are .ipk, as opposed to android's .apk's. Does anyone have the Kindle.ipk?
P.S. I don't think this qualifies as asking for freeware in violation of the rules as the Kindle App is free on the market, and I just need the installation file to be able to use it. If that is incorrect, mods please remove this request. Thanks.
UPDATE:
Never mind, thanks to some of the guys here at XDA I was able to install a clean copy of the latest Web OS on my "Demo" Tablet, and register for a new Web OS account. A Demo no more, but a full fledged Web OS Tablet. I downloaded the Kindle app from the market, but now trying to figure out how to get .mobi books to show up on the Kindle App.

There is some info on this at precentral.net in the TouchPad subforum. You might take a gander as it sounds like the demo units were not supposed to be sold and may be permanently locked out of accessing the app store.
Edit: try googling this and read the thread if you haven't done so already: hp touchpad demo unit solution bypass activation

Is there an shook reader for webos that i can just load all of my epub files into?
Droid Charge/Gummy 1.9RC2 2.3.4 ext4
Well you can just download a free amazon book, and rename your mobi books to the /.palmkindle directory, but they show up as the name of the amazon book, and I'm pretty sure its impossible to change that because the name of the book is in the main database file for webos. More technical details can be found here
Is there anything like Aldiko for WebOS.
This isn't a real satisfactory solution. I whonder how HP could sell the Touchbook without a working ebook reader preinstalled. I guess its things like these, that made people refrain from WebOS.

The kindle app works great on my tp
Sent from my synergized criffvo
I use my touchpad for viewing my digital textbooks (.PDF) in class. I'm currently using adobe reader but it lags considerably. I've tried using calibre to convert them to .mobi but it didn't work.
so I'm looking for one as well..
Managed to pick up a cheap 32GB... So disappointed about the lack of a half-decent book reader, and the Kindle app doesn't seem to be available to people in the UK
I had this same problem. I tried pReader, but the version in the market took forever to load even one .mobi ebook, and froze when I tried to load a second.
The Alpha version from the preware store refused to load .mobi files at all for me - it let me select them, and said it was loading, but they never appeared in the list.
I ended up using Calibre to convert all of my ebooks to .epub, and loading these into the Alpha version of pReader - it loaded all of them (about 200) quickly, and they look OK. It is still a bit laggy and rough around the edges, but its good enough for me until someone comes up with something better (or the pReader devs release an update).
How do you get back to the main menu in the preader native version? Im stuck inside one of the books and cant get out.
edit: Nevermind I just uninstalled it and reinstalled it. I think by putting it into fulllscreen I couldnt get into the drop-down to go back. So... DO NOT PUT INTO FULLSCREEN IN DISPLAY PREFERENCES!!!
Also, if you are using pReader and haven't done this already, try setting the encoding to UTF-8.
I had all of the special characters showing up as junk before this.
Good luck.

PS - If anyone is aware of a way to sideload books into the Kindle app without the free book hack, please let me know.

This took me a bit to figure out, but I did. I double-tapped toward the top half of the screen and it pulled the top menu bar back up. Similar to the bottom, where if you tap, it activates or deactivates the progress bar. What a pain in the ass and rather unintuitive if you don't know what you're doing.

[Q] E-Books

I have come to the Titan from Android, so am new to Windows phone. I have a vast collection of books already downloaded. So I want to just copy them to the phone - taking advantage of the huge screen! I can find no way mentioned on the Web or Microsoft sources to do this. With the Apps on Marketplace you have to download each one fresh from the sites.!!! Help would be greatly appreciated.
I use Kindle for Windows Phone on my Samsung Focus. I love it because I have the same application for my X201 Tablet, so if I am reading on my phone, it syncronizes the furthest page. That way, when I use Kindle for Windows on my tablet, I start on the same page I left off with the phone.
Your e-books need a reader. What were you using on Android? Search the Windows Marketplace for an application from the same reader.
You can try Freda. Since you cant sync ebooks directly to your Phone it syncs using your dropbox account..
Maybe leave a short comment how you like the reader..
I have a question about Kindle. The only way to have books on your Kindle account (and then accessible from the smartphone) is buying them from the official website or is there a way to add books you purchased elsewhere?
Ok friend, i got you .. came from Android just like you and had my books with no idea how to bring them on the huge screen of my new WP7 >>
what you need to do is:
1- Install Dropbox on your computer (dropbox.com), and then upload your books to your account.
2- Install the free e-book reader Raccoon
3- Raccoon gives you an access to the Dropbox account, so download your books (5 max for the free version)
you should be good to go
Well, Freda does the same and it's quite good, I don't know about Raccoon though.
Anyway I'd like to know about amazon, because I like very much the Kindle app.
Hi,
As for the Kindle App, I don't think there is an easy way to get your own books onto it. If you own a Kindle, then you can do it (follow the instructions for 'Sending Personal Documents to Kindle' at the Amazon support site, http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...avbox_email_200375630?nodeId=200375630&#email) - but it doesn't look like that mechanism is supported by the WP7 app.
What format are your books in, anyway? If you need to convert them (or indeed store them in a catalog that Freda and other apps can access) you should take a look at Calibre (http://www.calibre-ebook.com).
Yes, I already have calibre. So far I use Freda, but I think Kindle app is a little better, mainly because it can be used in landscape mode. While Freda can't. Anyway Freda is very good, so I can't complain.
(I swear I wrote that before reading the last line in your signature)

Thanks for the kind words
Actually, in Freda you can read books in landscape mode (though it will always display the bookshelf and navigation screens in portrait). You can switch to landscape for the book text by using the 'advanced settings' menu, and adjusting 'orientation'. Freda does not switch orientations automatically according to how the phone is held (that's my personal choice, because I like to read in portrait mode while lying on my side, and an auto-rotate function does the wrong thing in that case).
Didn't know that. Thanks, I'll try it in landscape too then. Even if I feel quite good with protrait as well.

My Android phone thinks it's my Kindle, and my Kindle thinks it's my Android phone.

Please bear with me while I try to explain this. If I can figure out how to upload pictures, you'll be able to see what I mean, but if not, then I hope you will be able to comprehend my poor attempt at explaining this. I'm on the internet with my Fire HD6 4th Gen (vs. 4.5.5.1). I've downloaded apps (more than once) and I keep getting this message: " No carrier" and then it lists the model of my phone. I get another message on my Fire that states: *App name*requires root and will be installed on your device soon". I look on my Samsung Galaxy S5 and now there's a message telling me that the app I wanted on my Fire is now on my phone. I'm learning to manage my frustration so I'll leave it to your imagination to insert your favorite expletives
