I've updated to the latest CM9 alpha build and I'm getting this error.
"Unfortunately, System UI has stopped"
And this evidently results in me having no notification bar, so no back/home/menu buttons. I'm using Button Savior for now, but how do I fix this? I tried re-updating, wiping cache, wiping dalvik, and none of that fixes it. Help please.
Thanks!
Have you tried wiping data and then flashing?

I was afraid to because I wasn't sure what "wipe data/factory reset" would do. I thought it would maybe take me to stock Nook (yes, I'm that big of a noob), but it seems it treats it as if cm9 were the stock software/ui. I lost all my apps, but I can just reinstall those. I finally have my notification bar back though. Thanks so much for your help!
Np. Its a common belief that you had in regard to wipe data/factory reset (I myself thought this myself when I was new to android). In reality though, it is simply clearing out the user data partition and resetting the rom to its raw form, thus all user apps and data are deleted. This is why apps like titanium backup are useful, so that you can restore your apps and data when swapping roms.
Generally when simply updating a rom, a data wipe is not needed. But if you encounter weird errors such as yours, a data wipe will usually do the trick.
Conversely, you should almost always do a data wipe when going to a different rom (stock to -> cm9 for instance).

If you don't want to do a factory reset, try to replace twLauncher with "Go Launcher" and see if that fix it for you...

Which CM9 alpha build #??
I had tested both CM10 and CM9 on my Nook Tablet device, the CM10 (SGT7 Jelly Bean Rom v0.3 - Linaro) is not stable for daily use. The standby and sleep is good, but running any apps or install apps from Google Play may freeze the device. Experience this for 5-10 per day.
After follow the tread, found that CM9 v0.05.3 is "good" for daily use, then I downgrade to CM9, so far it work pretty good for normal day to day use.
Anyway, the Jelly Bean UI is far more better then ICS.

Searched high and low on XDA and Google and could not find anything related to my particular issue. I'm running CM7 RC1 with Gingerbread 2.3.7 It seems like the problem is mostly occurring when I long press a contact to call or message, not when I take the longer route and tap the contact photo to the right on the contact info, then tap the phone icon and select which number to call....However I slightly remember there being a setting in the "CyanogenMod Settings" that stated something like "this setting may cause a lot of FCs" I just can't remember which setting it was... Here is the FC I'm getting:
The application VZ Navigator (process com.vznaigator.DROIDX2) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
"Yes I am a noob to XDA but I have a lot of experience and understanding of flashing roms and what not, been flashing since HTC Dream."
Wipe dalvik cache in recovery.
Thank You!!
Thanks for the reply! I will try that, one question though. During the CM7 Install dragon said to wipe dalvik cache, can't remember when exactly in the install he said to do so but I followed the instructions EXACTLY, since then haven't had any problems whatsoever but this...Anyway, when I boot into recovery it doesn't actually said "dalvik cache" it just says "wipe cache partition". Is that the same thing? Also, I just recently flashed CM7 for the second or 3rd time as I had a problem with my primary gmail password yada yada...so now I have everything set up how I want in and now I'm moving on to Titanium Backup settings and freezing some apps (I am aware of which one I should and should not freeze) but being that I don't even use VZNAVIGATOR wouldn't it be wise to just freeze it? Thanks again so much for your help, wiping cache now....
To wipe dalvik cache go into the advanced section in bsr... Dalvik cache is listed there.

Wiped Cache Partition
So I booted into recovery and wiped the cache partition and rebooted. Everything seemed fine except that my roaming triangle icon was blinking so I connected to my wifi and my service came back. Then I did the *228 thing and updated my roaming capabilities, all is well with the service now. After that before I tried exiting out of my contact/dialer etc. I got the VZNAVIGATOR FC again. Going to try to freeze it in TB. Anymore suggestions would be much appreciated.
Dalvik Cache
Ok got your reply post about Dalvik location, wiping now, thanks again!!!
CM7 Android Recovery
when I open the CM7 Android Recovery app, (I already have it installed) and tap Recovery Mode, the phone shuts off and doesn't boot into recovery mode. So even after I manually power it up and open the CM7 Android Recovery
app and try to install first, then tap recovery mode, it does the same thing...any ideas??
My Apologies...
Sorry for all the questions. I research XDA and found that I need to have it plugged into the A/C. So now I was able to boot into recovery and wipe the Dalvik Cache. Thanks so much again, I will repost if it works.
Problem Solved!!
Thanks for the useful information! Very much appreciated.
Personally I would get rid of VZ Navigation and use Google navigation its much better. That's just my 2 cents!

He wasn't using VZ Navigator, it's just that if you flash over something (in this case the stock rom) without wiping the dalvik cache, there are bits of apps left over that you will see spontaneously force closing.
Hello all
How often should you clear cache or fix permission using CWM?
Jim
Sent from my VEGAn-TAB using XDA
Personally I do it when ever the ROM that I am on starts acting a bit quirky. Which is not very often if you are running a stable build like VeganTab, CM7 or even the Froyo ROMs that have been out for a while. If you ever see yourself loading up a bunch of apps and running them allot. Over time you might would want to clear the cache and definitely fix permissions to get things back in order.

They're not something you need to do often, or even occasionally, as part of some preventive maintenance regimen.
If you switch ROMs, then you will have to clear cache. Actually, it's best to do a "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM in this case--cache will get formatted in the process.
You would want to clear cache if you upgrade the current ROM; it is better, though, to instead wipe dalvik-cache. Similarly, if you upgrade an app manually--ie. not via the Market or the usual Android update process: eg. by overwriting an app in /system/app or /data/app and rebooting the system--you might want to clear cache.
You might have to clear cache after powering on the tablet after a long (weeks, months) period of inactivity. In this case, the battery will go flat and the system will lose its date and time--going back in time, so to speak. This might, in turn, cause cached data to go out of whack--though Android should take care of this normally.
The "fix permissions" step is needed even less. This link explains why you would want to use it: Again, it might be needed after a ROM update, and not otherwise. This means that doing a fix permissions after a SD card repartition or a wipe data/factory reset step is nonsensical--the fix_permissions script operates on existing data.
I've tried several times to install the custom ICS ( [ROM] CM9 / LiquidSmooth / AOKP / Random ICS ), but WiFi is not coming on.
Any ideas how to resolve this?
Better yet, I am trying to flash the latest ICS ROM to my thunderbolt that is stable.
Seems most have some sort of reboot problem
So far I have tried all the Liquid Smooth - very nice ROMs but get random reboot
PS
From about phone, I see the following
Mode version: liquid mecha.mr3.100212
Build number: Liquid ICS v1.5MR3-JMOD
Radio: 2.00.00.0308, 0.02.00.0312r

No problem, hope you enjoy.
There's also a DeSensed version, called UnSense, which you likely saw as well.
See ya around that way.
Yes, I saw it and am trying to learn the differences between these 2 ROMs - so far better battery life stands out
Looks like I will be spending a lot more time there.
By the way, I was looking at your ext4 instructions (re-printed below for clarity - hope you don't mind)
Select Wipe/Format Menu Option
Wipe cache and dalvik
In the same Wipe/Format Menu: Wipe all partitions except SD
Now back in 4ext main menu: Select Tools
Select Format ext3 option I chose ext4 instead of ext3
Format Cache
Format Data
Format System
Now go back to the main menu and select the rom .zip to install
I chose ext4 instead of ext3 - could this be the cause of my random reboots using Liquid Smooth ICS ROM?
When I flash your ROM, I will choose to format ext3 - just to be sure (heh heh heh)

You can't use ext4 file system with nusense or unsense yet because the kernel doesn't support it. The random reboots with twisted ics could be related but I can't be sure since I haven't used it in a while.

I tried the nusense ROM and formatted using ext3
Am still getting WiFi to drop randomly
At times it turns itself off - when it does that I see "out of range'.
Google Market changed to "Google Play", and most of the times that process stops working and prevent me from installing my apps
WiFi turns off and prevent update from Google Play as well - since I have it setup to update over WiFi
Also, am getting lots of process is not responding messages like "process.com.android.phone is not responding"
I get these messages very frequently.
I may go back to using LiquidSmooth ICS8 mr3v1
Are you sure you formatted all the partitions in ext3? The only way I get those messages are when I don't format properly. Also, maybe try clearing cache and data in the phone app and as for the market trying clearing data and cache. It may not hurt to run a fix permissions in the recovery. Does you wifi problem only happen with ics roms?
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
If you do not format all partitions in ext3 format, you will have issues.
If you are not waiting until after the initial setup to sign into the market, that is likely an issue.
You need to wait until the home screen has set up and the device settles.
Then reboot, wait a minute and then sign into the market.
In my FAQ, you will see, the Market is the Play Store, no difference, just themed.
It has updated since the rom's last update and will do so when you sign in.
It's just an incremental update, but the theme goes away that I included for it an so does the custom icon and "Market" name.
If you do the above and still have issues, clearing the market (Play Store) app data and cache should sort you out.
If you are restoring data from another rom, then that is why you are also having force closes or wifi issues.
You cannot restore wifi data from an AOSP based rom that uses a GB kernel and expect that the same config will work well with the ICS rom and kernel.

Yes, I am sure I formatted the partition in ext3
I cleared data, davlik factory reset etc
The only thing I did not do was "fix permission"
After installing all my apps, I booted to recovery and did the swipe thing again
Yes, my WiFi issue is only with ICS ROM, specifically this one (during and after setup)
So far the LiquidSmooth ICS 1.5 MR3 is working the best for me.
No WiFi issues at all, but I still do get occasional reboots.
Did you wipe boot and system partitions before flashing the rom?

Yes Sir, I did all that
I really appreciate all your efforts and your replies both to you and to Santod, I really, really do!
At this time, I resign myself to the fact that some of these ICS ROMs are not yet in their final stages and will wait patiently.
A huge Thanks for the great work to all developers, busting their humps to get this done.
I'm back baby
A funny thing happened to me yesterday, and I'm still laughing
Previously, I mentioned that I was tempted to downgrade my radio, but decided to go back to Liquid ICS v1.5MR3V1
So far I was still getting random reboots - way too many for my taste.
After reading numerous posting, I decided to roll back my radio from 2.00.00.0308, 0.02.00.0312r to 1.49.00.0406w_1,0.01.79.0331w_1.
But, in doing so, I accidentally installed the leaked ICS ROM instead (2.11.605.19).
So I thought I was downgrading my radio, but ended up installing the leaked ROM
Incidentally, I also un-rooted my T-bolt - Thanks to the new tool I was able to quickly root it back.
Luckily, I also backed up the previous ROM, and was able to restore it.
All in the sudden, my T-bolt is back - everything is working fine and no more reboots :victory:
To Recap, after downgrading my radio to the leaked radio 1.49, all is well again .
My T-bolt is running so good that I am hesitant to load the latest ROMs.
My choices are the nuSense beta 17.2 or AOSP 4.0.4 ICS [Multi-Source]
Is it a wise decision to upgrade or should I stay put
That updated nusense is amazing but I wouldn't run it with the full leaked radios. I use the combo of the. 19/leaked radios and they work great.

Sounds like I need to give the NuSenseROM a try, but ....
1) what's so amazing about it, and how does it differ from what I'm currently using (where can I get screenshots)
a) I know its been reworked - but that's over my head (for now)
2) I am not entirely sure what the combo 19/leaked radio is, is it this ".19 cdma and the ICS LTE radio" posted by Santod?
Thanking you in advance.
1) Basically everything works the way it was intended to. Camcorder included. Only drawback is battery is slightly worse than Twisted's build.
A) He rebased the rom using the official Droid Incredible 2 ota which is a better base since the original base was from the leak that sucked balls big time.
2) Yes

I now have the NuSenseROM installed - so far so good.
No reboots yet and I am still using the 1.49.00.0406w_1,0.01.79.0331w_1 radio
The ROM is nearly flawless, but I wish it had the phone dialer interface, and the people interface of the Liquid Smooth ROM
I love the fact the camcorder works, but I wish it also had the ICS camera (But I can download it).
I am using Go SMS Pro, and this ROM is not linking my accounts pictures there (bummer)
The Liquid Smooth ROM showed my accounts picture on that app.
I am using and synchronizing my Google, Verizon, Facebook, and Voxer accounts
Recently I flashed my phone with Cookiesandcream-quincyatt-1012 rom and my phone went all laggy and slow.
restored back to my CM10quincyatt that i had prior to cookiesandcream, and now that was acting all laggy.
I have tried several different roms(slim bean, liquid jb, cm9, cm10, and jelly beer, which seems to be working the best at least) and all of them seem to have the same issue, they act slow as soon as I use the volume rocker, and then my volume delays 10 seconds or so before it actually changes, and there not even sound coming from my phone. and is just laggy and has delays when i touch apps/settings etc.
aswell as soon as i boot up the phone after a flash, i get the gapps welcome setup screen(wifi setup, google account stuff, etc.)
i click "OK" and the button turns blue and will stay blue for 10 seconds before it actually does anything.
I have done factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, internal storage wipe.
Nothing seems to work.
It worked a tiny better after internal storage wipe, but i just need my phone in a useable state right now.
can anyone help? :s

Data.......you likely have either old data that is intended for a different architecture...
, or you are restoring data into the builds by using a restore app like titanium backup.
Several of the roms you mention are very fast and smooth when set up properly, but it is very important to clean the device before a flash, and keep it clean by installing applications from market..
Many users do restore apps via titanium backup and other applications designed to do so, but you must never restore the data associated with the apps from a previous build, unless it is the same build.
Wipe cache
Dalvik cache
data
and system...prior to any new build, and again, do not restore apps that contain data.....g

I have done all of the above many times, and installed new roms, the roms always end up laggy, the improve over time,
but once the phone restarts, it becomes laggy again.
also i have no sound coming from my phone at all.
music wont even play. I press play and it immidiatly pauses. even if i try to press play again.
and i have never used titanium backup, the only time i restore, is using the restore function in TWRP using a backup of a previous rom i had. I never ported any data from any apps using programs like that.
by the way, when i look through my mounts and storage(using CWM), it shows that all my things say "mount /efs" or "mount /data" and so on.
are all of these supposed to say unmount?

I've seen that error when I change the dpi below 400 when using rosie.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 4 Beta
You can try a dirty-flash of the same ROM, maybe to reinstall the System-UI apk.. It sounds like there's an error that resulted of a tweak you changed.
Do you remember what tweaks you did?
I remember having this problem when I changed the DPI too much too.
Sent from my DNA using Tapatalk 2
I don't recall doing anything to DPI adjustments. I did add Nova Launcher, but it worked fine for at least an hour or so while I was installing apps.
Anyhow, I tried the dirty flash, but that didn't fix it. I wiped and reinstalled and everything seems to be fine now.
I just managed to crash the system UI again and can't seem to get it to work again after a reboot. I had clicked on venom tweaks, then profiles. I clicked on tweak defaults and then the status bar disappeared and the "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped" message came up. Any ideas how to fix this? If it involves a reinstall (again) of the ROM, I think it is going to be time to try something else.
Format system. When I was getting system ui FC I went into recovery and formatted system. Seemed to fix the issue. I've included that step in my flash routine when flashing a new ROM now

There has been two additional posts to the ViperDNA thread in the developer section that ran into the same problem I did by going into tweak deafults. Unfortunately, I have too few posts to be able to add a "me too" reply at this time. One person fixed by doing a TWRP restore, but the only backup I have is of the stock before I installed Viper. Still would like to find a way to fix this without formatting and reinstalling everything a third time.

Format system, wipe cache and dalvik, flash the ROM again (which will again wipe system) then see if it comes up, if not you're good and if it does then its something they set in data which means a tweak file or something is there which should be able to be deleted. If its the latter that's why a factory reset was needed. Its been forever since I run sense or viper but I think they make a directory on the sdcard, good place to look.
Tapatalked from my HTC DNA - Carbon
I'm getting the same thing only I'm on CarbonROM. I had just let the phone download all my apps from the market and then after a reboot it greets me with the "System UI has stopped". I think it may be the app settings restoring causing a problem on my end but I'm not sure.
I love what little I've seen of the ROM though lol
Like others have said, wipe everything and try the install again. I got this during my first install of the ROM even though I did a clean wipe, but the 2nd time around it's been fine for me. I've only been using it for a few days though.
Do I need to use the "format data" option in TWRP? I went into the advanced wipe section and selected all of the options in there (twice), then installed the ROM. I skipped setting up accounts and all of the typical new setup options and went straight to quick settings, venom tweaks, profiles, tweaks defaults and system UI crashed again.
From my reading, I didn't see anything to be gained by formatting data, so I've wiped and reinstalled again. Just about have everything setup, then this time I will hurry up and get a good TIbackup and nandroid made before I find a way to break it again
