Best way to go to CM9 from CM7 - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ready to make the ICS jump. I have read that it is perfectly ok to wipe data/cache/dalvik and flash the new cm9 zip from CWM. Is this true? What is the best most reliable way to get cm9? Also, could someone please post a link to the most stable cm9 rom. I cant seem to find a good source anywhere

Rom! Rom! Rom! Which one ?

Hi
I have recently rooted my Galaxy s2 and now im looking for a different rom but there is so many to choose from and so many old threads with roms in them i have not got a clue what to choose from. Idealy im looking for a rom that will help give me longer batter life, a better wifi signal and somthing that i can add themes to.
I also have 2 questions i would like answered before i continue with a new rom.
1st Question. I currently have firmware version 2.3.5 would i need a rom compatable with this firmware?
2nd Question. My build is Gingerbread would i also need a rom that is compatable with Gingerbread
Any advice or appropriate links would be appreciated.

Check if it is i9100 or i9100G. In case, it's i9100G then mate, you don't have much to choose from. If it's i9100 then you will have to try different rom and kernel combination to suit your need, everyone has different battery life for every other user. You can start off with Checkrom, it's quite great, I'm using it. Irrespective of the rom, read first page and last 5 pages of the thread so that you know what to expect, problem wise and function wise. Read, read and read carefully before doing anything.

lool i think ur getting a bit confused mate.
cwm isnt a kernel, its a program allowing u to flash zips.
i imagine ur running stock right?
then ur kernel will be stock.
i reccomend either checkrom v6 or if ur feeling daring ICS roms r pretty gd aswell
CWM is not a kernel its a function inside the kernel mate
you need to decide wether you want ICS or GB
for ICS i'd reccomend XXLPH stock ROM its the best rom i've tried for 4.0.3
and for GB you can go for Checkrom V6 i've heard its pretty awesome ( i tried v4 myself but didnt like the battery life)

no, the kernel is wen u go into about phone and go to kernel version. It will then display it underneath.
Wat rom r u running?
did u buy the phone from the shop or somewhere else?

I've tested the ICS stock rom and a few others but for now settled for the "Resurrection Remix ics v9.3 black edition XXLPH 4.0.3 FULL-Wipe" and I'm very satisfied.
Battery wise it a lot better and the interface seems snappier and not as bloated as the original rom.

Chears mate.
From my point of view reading all the threads and topics regarding kernals and roms is a bit mind messing because there is so many too choose from
ok do the following, grab your phone - > dialer - > *#1234#
this will display PDA,CSC and Phone, this will provide the rom you are running for further reference
then into settings->about phone->kernel version ( must be something since you have root and CWM, im guessing chainfire kernel)
with that information we can provide you a better help
See my sig. Best Rom by far that I have tried.

I think if you are confused with the diffrences between kernel and cmw, i am pretty sure you are confussed about a lot of other things. So i think some reading is in order -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125282
This is a very good guide to read and their are other links within that thread to look through too. We all start not knowing what to do but lots of reading always helps, i hope it all goes well for you.
P.S. I am using ICS CM9 Codeworkx and it's a great rom, very stable even for a new user of custom roms.
as i thought you have a CF-Root so you are rooted and with CWM, on your app drawer you should have the CWM icon.
So you are ready to flash mate
you have to pick a ROM
for ICS i recommend
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1292825
for GB try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312240
in both scenarios you have to download the files and place them inside your phone via usb on a folder, then go into CWM mode and pick the option "install zip from sdcard" navigate inside your folders and pick the file you downloaded.....couple mins later you flashed succesfully your phone
cheers

Thank you everyone for your support and patience
the difference...amm you will need to youtube or google that as they are tons of different things, ICS is faster, smoother and damn good looking for me at least. Ill never go back to GB once i tasted the ICS
the kernels used for both ICS and GB are different each rom has its own kernel where the dev tested it works correctly, you could change them but if you flash a kernel you shouldn't or if its not compatible with the rom you might regret that
stick with the kernels included in the roms unless you are 100% sure they can work on the rom you pick
oh and one last thing before flashing stuff wipe your phone, its done inside CWM there's an option which says "wipe data/factory reset" and also wipe your dalvik cache inside CWM as well on "advanced->wipe dalvik cache"
hope it helped mate

im a little outdated on kernels but last time i checked there were kernels for GB and kernels for ICS. not sure if they work on both operative systems now
still, stick with the kerneles included in the roms, they are tested and included in the roms cause they work, by your question i feel you are concerned about losing CWM
worry not mate, CWM is present in all of the rooted kernels

in short, CM7 is based off Gingerbread and CM9 is based off ICS. If you want ICS, flash CM9 or one of the other roms in the dev section(s).
CM9

You need to read around a LOT more.
First off, don't use ROM Manager on a Galaxy S2.
Second, no, there is no version of 4.0.3 for CM7 because cm7 itself is 2.3.7. What you want is CyanogenMod 9.
EDIT: Ninja'd! That took me much longer to type than I thought it did. :S
Has anyone mentioned to you that you need cm9 for ics?
Oh there it is.

You can use TB to backup apps and data. Just remember when you're restoring apps on your new rom, DO NOT restore system apps/data. It will royally screw things up. The best course of action would be to manually select which games/apps to restore with data. The rest of your apps you should just redownload from the Play Store.
As for ROM Manager, it can just mess things up on this phone. You don't need it though...you can do everything you need to do with CWM Recovery or Mobile Odin.

@matt,
I thought ROM Manager still works perfectly for any CyanogenMod ROM, CM7 or CM9. It's just highly recommended NOT to use with any other ROM that not-CM.
@OP, I strongly suggest you spend much more time reading and make sure you understand the whole process of making the CM9 on your device. In fact, it will save you more time than just keep flashing it, bricking it and hunting for help.

If you already have a kernel with ClockworkMod, you don't need to worry about flashing one before flashing CM9.
Here is what you need to do:
1. Nandroid backup.
2. Download latest CM9 and GAPPS
3. Do a full wipe in ClockworkMod
4. Flash CM9 in ClockworkMod
5. Flash GAPPS in ClockworkMod

ITS A GUI INTERFACE FOR CWM
you can boot into CWM directly and do anything that ROM manager can do except download the rom....

[Q] Few Quick ROM Noob Q's

Hey guys, this is my 1st, just wanted to say this is a really awesome community
A few quick questions:
1) DO ROMs such as AOKP (My current) come with CWM? I believe installed CWM v 4 as per droidstyle's (awesome) guide, but then after AOKP was installed, I have CWM v 5.
2) When I look in my phone's root directory I see the folder sdcard, but also in root/mnt/sdcard, is there a difference?
3) What is the difference between flashing via odin, or via CWM if any?
Thanks a bunch for tolerating yet another noob
Welcome to the Forums!. Im new here too but thies seems to be a great place to get information and help, as far as ive seen.
1.)Most Roms do come with CMW, unless the rom doesnt not include its own kernel.
2.)Both sdcard folders are the same, just different ways. Theres a couple folders in android that are like this.
3.)Odin is typically used as a fallback, because CMW can perfroam almost the same functions, except for completely reformatting.

section 3 provides a link to cm7.2 gb(most likely an older version, will update soon)

You are probably looking at stable/official builds. As far as I'm aware, cm still classifies ics as experimental and cm7 is the official version.
That said, ice is very much daily driver quality despite what cm says.

1. Not sure if its been updated... you could ask or check in the respective thread.
2. Official Nightlies just dropped for select devices.. check dev section.
3. Yes
4 Neither.. CM9 based on ICS, CM10 based on JB.. Both are awesome and JB is the newest shiz so... (and actually CM9 may have more features right now)
5. 99% of the time no. Unless you flash a ROM w/ Odin that does not have root or CWM. But- most, if not all, the custom ROMs you find here will have root and CWM. Just look at the ROM features before flashing!

1. Yes siyah supports cm10. Says so in the title. Always read the change logs for important info
2. It's in beta sort of. They're releasing previews that are quite usable. I'm using it atm. Only annoying bug is the memory leak that can easily be solved by rebooting the phone. 3. Restore only app apks, not phone settings. Restore app data at your own risk.
4. Depends on if you're looking for stability. CM9 is stable but I like JB and I'm going to be sticking with CM10
5. No it doesn't. Flashing a stock rom with stock kernel will unroot it. Custom roms will not

Jelly bean has not yet been released by Samsung .
There are a number of leaked beta test roms of JB in the forum but repeat beta leaked test roms expect problems .

Go to the Original Development section and get CM9 from there. Its good for you to navigate around the site and get comfortable where stuff is. In regards to the bootani, in my experience you change this by modifying /system/media/bootanimation.zip. You can try swapping the new bootanimation.zip with the old bootani.zip and see if that works. But I've never flashed a .zip to change the bootani.. but to be fair its been a long time since I've had any desire to change the bootanimation

Lol.. sorry. Like I said you need to get comfortable with this site and not just ask for links.. if you can't find em sure, but you need to try. You can do it two ways- on your PC: at the XDA home page you'll see 2 search boxes near the top and to the right. The box that says "find your device" ..type your phone in there and choose it when the option comes up. Then scroll down.. bam- OG Dev Forum! Or download the XDA app and find your device that way-
I hope you find it but I'm confident you will

JB Bootloader and other??'s

Hey all. Quick question for ya. I am going to flash one of the JB roms to my wifes galaxy tab 10.1 this weekend.
She is currently running task's honeycomb rom. She has been running that for a good 5 months now.
What order do I proceed to get her to JB??
Must I flash an ICS rom first then flash a JB rom??
Do I need to flash a JB bootloader or an ICS bootloader?? If so where can I find them. Been searching the forum with no luck.
Any other info would be greatly appreciated. Specifically the orders or anything I have overlooked.
Thanks in advance,
Nycorduroy
not mandatory to have an ICS step, you can directly go to JB.
you just need CWM, you probably already have it if you are running task's rom.
backup your app (titanium is a great tool in my opinion)
copy rom file to your tab
make a full wipe (+cache +davilk)
flash rom
reboot and enjoy

This does not belong in the Development section. All questions need to be put into the Q&A section. Please do that from now on.
With that said, I am not sure about the bootloader but you probably need to update your version of CWM recovery, and you can find out about that as well as the bootloader stuff in the threads for CM10/JB. Pershoot's threads are probably a good place to look as well.
Edit: well someone got to it first, follow their instructions as well

Yes, Pershoot stated in Android 4.1.1 - CyanogenMod 10 Preview thread that you need to have a US HC or ICS bootloader in order not to have charging SODs. If you have a US bootloader you should be fine if not flash a stock US HC or ICS rom via Odin before you flash CM10 (you'll loose all data on the tab). Alternatively there are flashable US bootloaders but I've never tried one. I can't put the links because search feature is is temporarily unavailable.
Finally, You could still get charging sods and some wifi problems etc. even if you came from a US bootloader. Pershoot says a small minority will face these issues no matter what. A hard reset fixes these issues temporarily. If you could wait a little bit more a new cm10 is on the way with 3.1 kernel which is supposed to work fully functional. But still, I think current CM10 is the best rom available right now.
