SLCD 2 better than Super AMOLED HD? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey Guys,
I just recently sold my Evo 3D and upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus on Sprint - very happy. I have noticed A LOT of raving reviews about the SLCD 2 screen and that it makes the AMOLED look washed out etc...
What are you initial reactions to the screen, brightness, clarity, viewing angles etc? Does it really beat out the Super AMOLED HD?
Thanks.

Now this is the evo 4g LTE right

Does it beat it!?!? Retina display what? Amoled who? Screen is brilliant! Love it!!!!!!!!!!

when i first got my LTEvo, my eyes were in disbelief. absolutely beautiful. i miss the deep blacks of an amoled but blacks in exchange for every other color is a fair trade. enough to jump ship? ehh if you really got the spare cash sure

yes.. the display difference is outstanding

I have to say this screen is Ahhhhhhhhhh-mazing. I have a family member that has a iPhone 4s and my LTEvo screen uses the apples retina display to wipe it's @$$

I agree as well, the screen is truly amazing! Like seriously...when you look at it for the first time, it blows everything away.

When I saw press photos showing the EVO's screen, the skeptical side of me assumed they were photoshopped because the screen looked great, uniformly bright, and crisp at just about any angle. Now that I've seen it in person, it is seriously ridiculously awesome. When looking at it at an angle it doesn't even LOOK like an LCD screen; it looks like a screenshot of my phone pasted on top of the screen, kinda like those non-functional demo units you see in stores. It's just silly.
Another notch in the SLCD2's favor is that it won't have any burn-in. I think I read somewhere that AMOLED screens are vulnerable to burn-in?

I think my One X display is better than my Note/Nexus display, and better than the S3 display (I had a couple of hours hands-on with the S3 last weekend). The S3 display is also awesome, but overall SLCD-2 still has it for me (and I'm a self-confessed AMOLED fan).

Wow. Overwhelming votes for SLCD 2. Has anyone come from a Galaxy Nexus?

I upgraded from a Nexus S to a Galaxy Nexus. I wasn't disappointed with the display but I don't remember being amazed by it either. I returned the GNEX within my 14 day window when i heard of the discounts for preordering the LTEvo at BB and trading in an og Evo.
Just completely blown away by the LTEvo display right out of the box...

SLCD2 ~ Samoled+ >> Samoled HD.
SLCD2 = amazing pixel density, high resolution - immediately noticeable if you play a lot of youtube videos. Good brightness. Requires high brightness for good contrast ratio.
Samoled+ = amazing contrast ratio. Not pixelated. Good brightness. Somewhat low resolution, only noticeable in videos.
Samoled HD = a step down from samoled+ in all almost all parameters. Still amazing contrast ratio. But very pixelated. Decent brightness.
Phones I've used - Evo LTE, Epic Touch, Galaxy Nexus.
I'd say I equally enjoy both SLCD2 and Samoled+. Samoled HD is just too grainy and dim.

Iphone 4 highest resolution screen ever?

Has anyone else seen the iphone 4 commercial saying the screen is the highest resolution screen ever on a phone?
I thought the vibrant had a better screen? It definitely looks better than the iphone four though.
The iPhone 4 does have the highest resolution ever. Samsung claims that the SAMOLED screens have better viewing angles and all that ****. Its really just what u think overall I guess.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The pixels and the screen size on the iphone 4 have a better looking screen while the vibrant has a bigger screen but lesser pixels so yeah the iphone 4 screen is better but iOS sucks =]
the iPhone 4 has a 3.5 inch LCD screen has a resolution of 960 x 640
the vibrant has a 4 inch S-AMOLED screen that has a resolution of 800 x 480
the S-AMOLED screen displays colors clearer and truer and is easier to see in the sun, the iPhone 4 has an insane pixel density that makes things look cleaner
its a matter of preference really once you let an iPhone 4 owner watch Avatar on your vibrant they will be extremely jealous
That's pretty surprising.
The kid with the iphone 4 finally got pissed at me and quoted the commercial lmao.
But I still think the vibrant looks cleaner plus bigger screen=better.

ive compared the I4 and Vibrant tirelessly after seeing my friends I4. I was blown away and confused by how good the I4 OS looks, its pretty shocking because there is nothing else like it, at least in the domestic mobile device arena. I was actually pissed off that my vibrant looked so much fuzzier, i almost stopped using it and just pulled out my old nexus I was so bummed.
But after I looked into it further it became clear that the I4's visual advantage is limited to the OS, which is definitely important but it doesnt include media, so the Vibrant's samoled does have an advantage in that department. Also, I think the I4 is much easier to see in daylight, the Vibrant is somewhat better than than the Nexus, which is virtually invisible under the sun, but the Vibrant is still no treat to use outside.
The I4 is far and away better looking as far as the operating system which basically includes all lines; apps and their icons, text, the browser, you cant see pixels, its not even close. Also, the old and new Iphones alike scroll without blurring like Android does (I believe its because of GPU acceleration which, if Im not mistaken, Android will add with Gingerbread?), it keeps its resolution while scrolling which makes a big difference visually, particularly in the browser. With Android phones, once you are pressing the screen to scroll in the browser, you can see a huge difference between pressing and not pressing, as soon as you let up the screen goes back to its optimal quality. But the Vibrant absolutely looks better with all media.
I4 has more pixels on a smaller screen with crazy pixel density, so that part really cant be personal preference, unless you prefer fuzzier lines/text. But it is relative, if the I4 didnt exist I would be wild for the Vibrants screen in media and the OS alike. But the I4 obviously has a better look in the OS alone, but not media.

Comparing Angry Birds is a bad comparison - the iPhone version is not optimized for the iPhone4 display, I don't think. It's a lower resolution than the Android version.
Retina display has higher pixel density, and you have to try real hard to distinguish between the pixels, however if you put two screens together and just look at them without digging your nose into your phone you can hardly see that SAMOLED is a bit washed out compared to the Retina, but once you fire up a high quality video SAMOLED will take it any day due to its brightness and dynamic contrast. I do think colors on Sammy are over saturated like with almost all of their LCD/LED panels.

What are you talking about, I've used my phone in direct sunlight in the middle of the day and the screen is easily readable with MINIMUM brightness, unless your screen is dirty and is being extra reflective because of it, this screen works amazing in the sun, on full its clear even with glare
Also, my vibrant's browser does not blur, I just tested it for a goods few mins and no bluring at all
And lastly on discussion, the i4's screen resolution + the smaller size of the screen kinda makes you think its sharper but its a smaller screen...does a higher resolution help it at all? Do you see any distinguishable difference from a lower res screen?
The only advantage i4 has is how dim and how bright the display can get because its an lcd however super amoled wins overall

Doesn't super-Amoled give a blueish tint on whites? on my i4 the browser sucks, it gives pattern checker board things when scrolling super fast, and on android i never got this.
IMHO overall the S-amoled is better, the colors are more vivid but it's funny how the maker of both displays is Samsung

I've had the blurry browser srolling on all my Google phones. Its more noticeable if you've used an iPhone for a while then used a Google phone for a while. Just go to this forum, and look at the arrows pointing right and the icons especially the envelopes to the left of the thread titles. Now slowly scroll, you'll notice the envelopes almost blinking, and the lines become jagged off and on. So when you scroll normally theres a subtle choppiness. But really its only annoying because iPhones don't do it they are smooth, I thinking its the gpu acceleration which we should have shortly. Android hadn't said why they have put off gpu acc so long. Or maqybe they have but I don't know about it. As far as sunlight it could he better but coming from a nexus I would say the vibrant is indeed a treat

There's linpack for iPhone, but it isn't made by the same company, so I am not sure how *valid* the comparison would be. There isn't really any universal benchmarking tools that exists on both platforms. So you are SOL at the moment.

actually i thought the same until i read up on the tegra 3. its actually more battery optimized then our dual cores. its the way the cores work and what not. you can read up on it on the nvidia site, its pretty sweet.

"Tegra 3 processor provides up to 3x the graphics performance of Tegra 2, and up to 61 percent lower power consumption" my point. it will be more powerful, with better battery-life. that sounds nice, right?

super amoled is crap if its pentile, even at 720p on the galaxy nexus, pentile screens suck ass...i've seen it... hsdpa goes up to 21 mpbs as oposed to amazes 42. I really don't care about processors at this point...there's basically no point of having a dual core processor more than 1.0 ghz if the rom and kernel are able to utilize it well... I don't even get the point of faster processors, are you trying to render adobe photoshop on there???
let's not talk about software here because most newer htc phones will get ICS... Time will only tell...I honestly don't see a reason to upgrade to a ville...My personal opinion only. you can disagree.

agreed only thing good about amoled is the deep black, I actually think LCD is much better in sunglight!!! I used my brothers super amoled vibrant vs my amaze, same webpage, both on high brighness the lcd is waaay better in sunglight...but hands down the best screen must go to the iphone ips lcd screen even the super lcd on the rezound with more pixels per inch does not even compare to the iphone screen...I also compared the rezound to my amaze screen I could not even tell the difference!!! a lot of things play a role in screen quality. super amoled PLUS (non pentile its rgb matrix) looks great if only they could get it to 720p, That's what I'll be waiting for!!! still retina display is hard to beat every single phone i've taken to the apple store to compare to the iphone screen just seems to be completely inferior, my friends galaxy nexus, and his buddy's rezound both at 720p, super amoled, super lcd, no matter what they're all inferior to the iphone screen...that's one thing i'm envious when it comes to the iphone...

it doesn't matter how tiny it is or not the rezound has a better PPI, means more pizels per inch, but it still doesn't look as crisp as the iphone!!! rezound 342 ppi and iPhone 4s 326 ppi. so means rezound packs more pixels than the 4s but 4s looks much better, its the IPS lcd which I think is proprietery to iphones, the other lcds are super LCD's made by sony which are good but do not come close to IPS lcd technology

yea you're right actually so guess not proprietery.... but it seems the ppi is way low!!! 480 by 800 is almost half the ppi as the iphone!!! I havn't seen the g2x screen yet, but how is the vibrancy of the screen, that would explain why ips could perhaps be better than super lcd!!! it terms of viewing angle i think amoled usually wins
anyways i think we're streering off the main topic lol

Hey i got the samsung galaxy s2 with SUPER AMOLED Plus but im looking at HTC One X with HD 720p...
Wot screen would be better?

You're comparing a phone that came out last year to a one that was just announced, of course the htc one x has the better screen due to its resolution but its blacks are nowhere near as good as samoled screens. I'd at least wait for the galaxy s3 and compare those side by side.

720p screen would be better, some people don't like the saturated colors of AMOLED screen.
I doubt that on a 4 inch screen you can tell whether its HD or not!
Why don't you just go to a shop and look at them, with your eyes? You can't be sure which you will prefer by asking people here.

HD screen def looks better! but for everyday use think amoled trumps it battery wise.
People make a big deal over 720p screens while I would like it its not a big deal to me 480x800 super amoled+ looks fine, to me there's not much difference. my wife couldn't tell the difference between my gs2 and the nitro. she said mine looked better

You can play hd on sgs2!
hmm personally i think that the AMOLED screen does a mighty fine job at being sharp and clear... personally i like how vibrant the colours are and the option to tone it down via Display/Mode.
I don't really see the point in 720p HD on cellphones... >.> I rather buy a tablet.
Till you reach that 300ppi, you can still see differences. For example, the eBuddy icon in my status bar on my HTC Desire looked sharper then the one nkw on my S II.
Desire: 800x480 over 3.7 inches
S II: the same 800x480, over a bigger 4.3 inches
I will not calculate the ppi, but obviosly I could see the difference between the 2. I think the S II has somewhere around 200-220 ppi, HTC Desire around 240-260.
Most of the Android phone's with 720p displays have above 300ppi, like the iPhone's retina display. At that point, you really can't see those pixels anymore. Anyway, the S II's screen is amazing .. i love it. But to be honest that HTC One X' display is better from what I have seen.
Best thing is to wait a month to see the what the S III's like and then decide. I always hate people that buy a phone and then cry a better one comes out after 2 months... wait till all options are revealed and then buy! That moment will be after the Galaxy S III
@XDA mark
Galaxy S2 ~217 ppi

Would love to see it.
I'd love a comparison of the screens specifically - my wife's iphone 4 retina display is crisp, but it's not WOW like the Note.
Samsung really has a leg up with the Super Amoled tech - no one is touching it right now.
Kinda comparing apples and oranges here arn't we?

Apples to Androids. I agree, an iPad is a somewhat different device, although I sold my first gen to help fund my $299 upgrade to the Note (thanks in part to iPhone 4 resale prices plummeting)
Still, having just come from several iPhones and an iPad myself, I think a comparison between lower DPI AMOLED and higher Retina is valid in concept, since some will say the crispness of the Apple displays (even if smaller) is superior to the slightly lower per mm density of the Samsung. I've gone back and forth, myself. Sometimes this Note AMOLED seems almost too saturated for my tastes, and you can't deny that text and fine details look amazing on Retina, but the latter definitely doesn't have the deep rich hues, either.
i dont think you can hold up the ipad next to your ear and talk ....
I own both the iPad and the Note. And will start off saying I love both devices. I am not a fan of the iPhone, owned many in the past. The iPads Retina display is pretty damn WOW I'm not gonna lie. It's insanely crisp and very accurate color reproduction. In videos/movies as well as pictures the iPads is more realistic where the Note has Samsung 's vibrant color punch. Both do a good job in their respect. I wasn't gonna even get the iPad but figured I'd get it for my GF and use it when I wanted. Ans see what the fuss was about with the Retina display.
The blacks on the note are darker via the Super Amoled. But suffers from black crush time to time in dark scenes and block pixelation. The iPads retina is something that has to be seen in person to do it justice. It literally looks fake it's that clear lol
Like stated the Note gives off very saturated colors, which is fine with me. I need to do some more side by side comparison. But as of right now I'm gonna have to give it to the Retina display wise. The super clear text, very accurate color reproduction is pretty amazing.
I will say having both is kinda best if both worlds. I enjoy the iPad because it does exactly what I want it to do, and very well. Plus I'm a display snob lol. I had a Transformer Prime which I returned. Had to many problems and went through a few of them. I also like Apples 4:3 ratio for web browsing and gaming actually. I hate iPhones though lol. My Note satisfies my geek side with customizing and over clocking and such. It all depends what you want your device to do. Plus the Direct Tv app on the iPad is BOSS!
But if you ask me what device is better overall in a toe toe fight.... I'd say the Galaxy a note
Compare Galaxy Note with Ipad 3??? WTF Hahahah, That's a funny thought. It would be ok to compare Galaxy Note 10.1" with Ipad 3.

I agree with this. I was just trying to give you guys a idea what I see as far as display wise. I'm eagerly awaiting on a Galaxy Note tablet. However, owning a Note it might feel unnecessary if you know what I mean. Being they will be identical just a larger screen.

My co-workers mock me relentlessly about the hugeness of my phone. When one of their ipads arrived, he came over to my office holding it up to his head like a phone and said 'Who's got the bigger phone now tough guy!'
Nubs, just don't understand
The new iPad screen is made by Samsung... so not sure Apple wins either way.

Exactly! Also the A5X chip is essentially a Samsung Exynos chip. All Apple does is send Samsung the blue print and Samsung makes the chip for them. This time around Samsung also did the LCD display like noted above. It was speculated to be Sharp this time around but lookie lookie lol.
It's all so funny how thet are taking each other to court but Samsung makes the processor and the display for the iPad lol.
Either way we have a new iPad in our home which is used by the GF the majority of the time. But both serve their purpose.

Actually, Apple's new "Retina" display doesn't even adhere to their own [original] requirements of a Retina display (I don't recall what the numbers were, but Jobs presented them when the iPhone 4 was released). It's just marketing (aka APPLE LIES). The Note has a higher PPI than the new iPad does. The new iPad has 264 Pixels Per Inch, while the Note has 284.8 Pixels Per Inch. Ignoring trademarks, we have more of a right to use "Retina Display" than Apple does.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get all of the hype over the Apple's retina display. I own the 4th generation iPod touch with the retina display, and I can't remember ever gawking over how amazingly beautiful it is. Same goes for the iPhone 4S. I remember right after it came out, I went to the Apple Store to get an accessory. I literally played with the 4S for several minutes, and didn't notice until after I left the store that I hadn't paid any attention to the retina display. Things like that usually JUMP out at me. I'm really particular about screen quality. That's why I own a 3D LED TV. I wanted the best screen possible and I can see the difference. With the retina displays, I've never noticed anything eye-popping about them, except when watching videos. That's where Apple products have always shined. They have superior video quality.
But, I've been a million times more amazed with the quality of my Galaxy Note super AMOLED HD display, than the retina display. I watched high quality Netflix movies on both devices, and the Notes screen was better in most instances. True, the Apple products display natural colors better than anyone else, but who wants to see natural colors on an HD TV or phone? That's the whole reason why people go HD. They want bright, vibrant colors. Also, I don't know if you know, but there are three settings on the Note that changes the screen colors when watching videos: Vivid, Natural, and Movie. I don't know if those are the right terms, but it's close enough. Each setting is actually noticeably different.
I was not aware of that you can change the picture mode while watching videos. Thanks.

OG or S3

I want to know how the OG compares to the Galaxy S3 in terms of hardware. Its a shame the OG is running ICS and because of that I will be unlocking the bootloader as soon as i get (seems thecubed is almost ready to release) and running an AOSP based ROM. So for me the deciding factors are really just the hardware and most importantly is the screen quality.
The other main reason i'm considering the OG is because its very similar to the N4 which will make development easier, I would have went with the N4 and never looked back but 16GB is just not enough for me.
So how would you compare this to the S3?
only phone that compares to LGOG is HTC DNA there is no other comparison... SG3 was last month's Adonis
got LGOG?
This phone is better than the s3 in every aspect, faster better screen way better colors and clarity. The camera it's a wash between the two but I'm used to HTC which had better cameras than either.

If you care about the screen quality, then there is no comparison. The OG's IPS display is waaaaay ahead of SAMOLED in every way but contrast. For clarity, color accuracy, color balance, and brightness the LGOG wins hands down.
Thanks for the input, what about build quality of the phone?
I think HTC has the best build quality of any manufacture, Samsung is okay just don't like the plastic feel and LG has had a bad rep.

Build Quality of the Optimus G is very solid. Glass front and I assume glass back also. One thing to consider about the AT&T variation is that their is a miniscule gap between the display and outer region of the phone where dust and particles get in (something that my Optimus G keeps collecting).
OG
Not even really a competition OG wins by a mile and a half in terms of spec. And from the looks of it we will be able to ROM our phone very soon so our development is not lacking either.
hmm I have no idea which of the 3 versions we get in Canada, I don't think its the AT&T version because we only have 32GB non expandable memory with 8MP camera so maybe its the international version?

Yours is a different animal, altogether. It's not the same as the international version, nor is it the same as the two U.S. versions.

Picked up my LGOG this morning. Had the opportunity to place the S3 side by side with the LGOG... the difference on the screen alone was day and night to me. I upgraded from the Atrix 4G.
been watching a few reviews and i notice in most of the videos the screen has a lot of glare, one of my main issues with the HTC Radiar was glare especially in direct sunlight. I find the AMOLED screen on the S3 is much better in sunlight, but wondering how the OG compares.

Well I am not sure about the GS3, but when I had my Epic 4G (normal super amoled) it was horrible in the sunlight. The OG fairs much better.

The OG screen is much brighter and has less reflectance than the S3, so it has better outdoor viewing.

If you are talking ATT especially the S3 is only dual core with adrena 225 gpu which is really weak compared to the LGOG
I hope you guys a re right with Project GeeFree this maybe my next phone, kinda considering the HTC One X+ as well but, in terms of next gen tech its the LGOG
I have a Galaxy Nexus, SGSiii and I just got the OG. I like the looks of the SGSiii better than the OG. The screen and audio and overall performance is great on the OG, but I say the same about the SGSiii. I love the Galaxy Nexus on 4.2 and I have loved the device since day one.
With all that said. I believe the OG on AOSP soon will be amazing. I do prefer the look and feel of the Nexus 4 over the OG side by side.

I don't really know that there is any actual comparing the S3 to the LGOG.
They are sorta different ballparks in most respects.
