from the specs I've seen on the ville, I really don't think it's an upgrade, in fact It looks like a downgrade from the amaze.

Its 1.5 ghz dual core. You are thinking of the HTC edge that is quad core

its 1.5ghz dualcore s4 processor. which completely DESTROYS the s3 processor in everyway. amoled screen with QHD resolution, super thin. ICS and sense 4.0
Downgrade?? how so? im curious
Seems like the batterys are getting smaller and smaller

Lol quad core... That's like using a server to power notepad. Dual Core is plenty for a phone. Quad Core would be for people to say they have something new. What would anybody possibly need quad Core for?
Ville isn't much different. I'll be good for a while

yeah the s4 will make our s3 processor look like a peice.. but i wouldnt care to upgrade when the tegra 3 is around the corner with 5 cores and more battery optimized. no thanks, also has a lower mp front facing cam. im happy with my amaze for now

actually i thought the same until i read up on the tegra 3. its actually more battery optimized then our dual cores. its the way the cores work and what not. you can read up on it on the nvidia site, its pretty sweet.
edit: http://pressroom.nvidia.com/easyir/...prid=819304&releasejsp=release_157&xhtml=true
"Tegra 3 processor provides up to 3x the graphics performance of Tegra 2, and up to 61 percent lower power consumption" my point. it will be more powerful, with better battery-life. that sounds nice, right?
The processor pretty much a straight upgrade, as is the screen, but I don't think I'll be posting $500+ to get one

super amoled is crap if its pentile, even at 720p on the galaxy nexus, pentile screens suck ass...i've seen it... hsdpa goes up to 21 mpbs as oposed to amazes 42. I really don't care about processors at this point...there's basically no point of having a dual core processor more than 1.0 ghz if the rom and kernel are able to utilize it well... I don't even get the point of faster processors, are you trying to render adobe photoshop on there???
let's not talk about software here because most newer htc phones will get ICS... Time will only tell...I honestly don't see a reason to upgrade to a ville...My personal opinion only. you can disagree.
I would save my money and wait for the next one if you ask me.

agreed only thing good about amoled is the deep black, I actually think LCD is much better in sunglight!!! I used my brothers super amoled vibrant vs my amaze, same webpage, both on high brighness the lcd is waaay better in sunglight...but hands down the best screen must go to the iphone ips lcd screen even the super lcd on the rezound with more pixels per inch does not even compare to the iphone screen...I also compared the rezound to my amaze screen I could not even tell the difference!!! a lot of things play a role in screen quality. super amoled PLUS (non pentile its rgb matrix) looks great if only they could get it to 720p, That's what I'll be waiting for!!! still retina display is hard to beat every single phone i've taken to the apple store to compare to the iphone screen just seems to be completely inferior, my friends galaxy nexus, and his buddy's rezound both at 720p, super amoled, super lcd, no matter what they're all inferior to the iphone screen...that's one thing i'm envious when it comes to the iphone...

it doesn't matter how tiny it is or not the rezound has a better PPI, means more pizels per inch, but it still doesn't look as crisp as the iphone!!! rezound 342 ppi and iPhone 4s 326 ppi. so means rezound packs more pixels than the 4s but 4s looks much better, its the IPS lcd which I think is proprietery to iphones, the other lcds are super LCD's made by sony which are good but do not come close to IPS lcd technology

my apologies, i thought the iphone had more ppi than the rezound, whoops
so the ips lcd on the iphone is was makes the picture itself more sharp/crisp? i definitely thought it would be the pixels itself and not the type of display

yea you're right actually so guess not proprietery.... but it seems the ppi is way low!!! 480 by 800 is almost half the ppi as the iphone!!! I havn't seen the g2x screen yet, but how is the vibrancy of the screen, that would explain why ips could perhaps be better than super lcd!!! it terms of viewing angle i think amoled usually wins
anyways i think we're streering off the main topic lol

That sounds like I'm being a prick but I'm just trying to learn. I didn't find what I was looking for on Google but a friend suggested xda. I'm coming from a nexus and my wife has the iphone4. Now the I4 is a "retina display" with many more pixels than android phones and its I will concede that I can't see a pixel on its screen. As far as text and application icons and any lines in the UI, they are like nothing I've seen from a phone or even a desktop. I find it troubling that we haven't heard rumors about nice displays for upcoming androids. But the vibrant has a superamoled, what I do know is that I can easily see pixels in every image I look at, but android phones like this are at most just 800x480 so I guess its a given that the UI and text and lines and images in all applications will be fuzzy? And so where does the Super come in to play? Contrary to what i was told the vibrants display definitely doesn't look any better than my nexus which isn't really bad because the nexus absolutely has a respectable display. The one difference I've seen is that avatar looks very good on the vibrant. I had avatar downloaded on my nexus it was a 720p version and it became pixelated with lots of movement. Not so the vibrant. I noticed the vibrant skips or sort of hiccups during heavy action scenes which I'm guessing is reflective of the processor? But the picture looks good. So is superamoled strictly for media? I guess if it had decent resolution the UI would look slick like the iphone4 regardless the display being amoled samoled lcd slcd or whatever right? So i shouldnt expect that the SAMOLED is supposed to make the UI in general look particularly good is that correct? I realize it seems dumb but the only thing that looks a bit better than my old nexus is watching certain movies. The vibrant has a great processor and a super amoled. Can anyone explain some of the practical benefits of the vibrants hardware?

samoled is better than the iphone 4's retina display. its about the screen technology. its colors and the way it looks in direct sunlight, looks better than the n1 & i4. although the i4 has a higher res doesnt eqaute to a better screen. vibrant has a better gpu than the i4 and better than any android out. the hardware on the vibrant is ahead of its time. 45n processor, 90million triangles per second by the gpu. all in all retina display focuses on pixels, while super amoled focuses on color and qaulity. vibrant and the galaxy s line are the best phones out hardware wise. not software wise. and by that i mean touchwiz and that rfs system.

Thanks, it a shame the pixels are so noticeable and blurry. This phones got hardware that could've kept me happy for at least a couple years. I watch a decent amount of media so I appreciate that aspect of the hardware. But even more I'm using the UI and the browesr and constantly seeing my wife's I4 really makes the fuzziness of the vibrant stand out. Samsung has media well in hand but everything revolves around the UI so persoanlly I'm impatiently waiting for a crisp I4-like UI. I would imagine higher Res is on deck, 800x480 has been done to death. I'm glad the iPhone exists be wise the competition benefits us, I just hate this period of waiting to catch up with what I consider a major portion of the OS. Especially since I use my wife's phone so often (T-Mobile doesn't work in many places like att does) its tough going from the iPhones perfect lines to my jagged blurry ones. But like I've read other people here explain., I'd have no idea how bad 800x480 is if I hadn't seen the 960x640 retina display. So really its my wife's fault : )

samoled is an interesting tradeoff. for people that really like video and media, the sgs line is spectacular.
no offense to the guy that says, "samoled is better than retina" but... really? its glaringly obvious that text is blurry/less crisp on amoled and samoled displays. most people might not see this, but for those of us with good eyes it sticks out like a sore thumb.
the display on the motorola droid, iphone 4 and the new slcd's from htc are a lot more readable. sure, you dont have the fake ass super contrast that samsung is giving you, but its MUCH crisper. there is a superb article on arstechnica that points out the flaws of amoled displays.
all that said, i don't mind samoled on my samsung focus. i just don't go out and bash the iphone because it makes me feel better about my purchase. the display apple put on the iphone is an industry marvel, and if it was on an android phone everyone would be talking **** on apple instead of downplaying it. its so tiring reading these weak ass posts. have a good day

The SGS2 retains it's 800x480 resolution. Yet it further increases its screen size.
That's the only factor that's hampering me from purchasing one.
Even the Atrix gets a heightened resolution and yet over a smaller area.
Anyone else facing this dilemma?
Well the Atrix has pentile matrix sub-pixels like the SGS had, but the SGS2 doesn't.
So the effective resolution should be pretty similiar.
More here.
I'm thinking of getting a Nexus S over the Samsung S2...Do you think the screen on the Samsung S2 is a huge jump from the Super AMOLED Nexus S? Is it really worth it...
Long story short, the SGS2 has more sub-pixels than the Atrix, and double the SGS.
Captivate, XDA Premium
Lol. Off-putting seems to be going viral.
Here is another way to look at it.
The PPI for the SGS 2 is 218.49, the PPI for the SGS is 233.24, and the PPI for the Atrix is 275.36. BUT, if we add in the extra sub-pixels from the SuperAmoled Plus display the theoretical PPI is 327.74. The iphone 4 has a PPI of 326, so it is actually sharper than an iphone 4.
Didn't realize it was so sharp but when you put it that way, it makes me want this phone even more. =)

correct me if i'm wrong but PPI is PPI - sub pixels contribute nothing to PPI so your theory above is totally wrong.
And all the people just repeating jibberish about how more sub pixels make a display clearer/ significantly better are clueless about resolution.

It's a theoretical boost to PPI, because it does actually increase sharpness and reduces eye strain due to clearer text/images. Sub-pixels do actually make the display clearer.
Here's a video showing Super Amoled Plus vs an iphone 4 (IPS display).

Wrong.
Super AMOLED Plus displays are an upgrade to Super AMOLED. They use a real-stripe subpixel matrix and not pentile - and so has 50% more sub-pixels. The PPI is a bit larger but Samsung will soon make them at much higher resolutions. Super AMOLED Plus displays are also thinner, brighter and use 18% less energy than the older Super AMOLED displays.
Super AMOLED has 2 sub-pixels per Pixel. So, for a resolution of 800*480, it has 768000 sub-pixels.
The Super AMOLED Plus has 50% more sub-pixels than Super AMOLED with PenTile Matrix. So, for a resolution of 800*480, it has 1152000 sub-pixels.
A Standard Matrix RGB use 3 sub-pixels per pixel. So, for a resolution of 800*480, it has 1152000 sub-pixels. Exactly the same number as the Super AMOLED Plus.
Retina Display has a resolution of 960*640 with 3 sub-pixels per pixel wich gives 1843200 sub-pixels.

Not really, it's not that simple. It has a resolution of 800x480. Each of those pixels can be made of whatever type of sub-pixel layout the decide. The atrix looks quite a bit different than the normal SAMOLEDs. The SGS2's subpixel resolution is lacking I suppose. Typically people can't make out individual subpixels.
Too put it another way:
Red and blue were 240x400 on the SGS. Green was the full 480x800.
On the SGS 2, all three will be 480x800.
On my phone, when the battery is low, the solid red battery meter looks like checkerboard.
Also, who cares about the iPhone's screen... It's just going to shatter anyway with it's wanna-be gorilla glass.
Captivate, XDA Premium
It is quite a good comparison...

Thank you,
it's not really about the benchmarks for me, but I'm happy to see that the RAM is very fast.
The thing that really comes to my mind when seeing this comparison is "Damn, the Rezound's screen is bad! Poor colour, poor contrast, grey blacks."
The LCD will never look as good as an AMOLED when viewed on an angle. Also the screen resolution differences will throw the benchmarks off. Best evaluation is in hand based off your personal needs and feel.

This really does showcase how much nicer the RAZR's screen is than the Rezound's; resolution be damned. Also, it's good that benchmarks are affected by resolution because the device will reflect that in actual usage. Not that the current benchmarks are all that great, but making a test resolution agnostic isn't very realistic.

I agree. The Razr's screen is WAAAAYY superior to the Rezound. To be honest, my only fear was the Rezound's resolution. I was worried that it will give the Razr a run for its money. Am happy to see, its nowhere close...
It does appear the display res is hurting Rezound performance. I tested the utter heck out of both devices, before choosing the Razr.
I like playing game emulators and the Razr has far better touch response and plays games faster than the Rezound. No comparison with N64 and PSX for performance and all emulators are rough with touch response on the Rezound.
Display res matters big on emulators. That is why they play faster when you play them in their smaller native windows. Less pixels to push.
Added: The real odd thing is the Flyer is the single core version of same chip, but also plays games far better. Performance and touch response.
Probably to do with the Rezounds pixel density.
Hey i got the samsung galaxy s2 with SUPER AMOLED Plus but im looking at HTC One X with HD 720p...
Wot screen would be better?
Nub question i know but i just want to be sure.
Thanks
You're comparing a phone that came out last year to a one that was just announced, of course the htc one x has the better screen due to its resolution but its blacks are nowhere near as good as samoled screens. I'd at least wait for the galaxy s3 and compare those side by side.
HTC One X with HD 720p screen will be better... is HD..... the screen of SGSII is not HD...in the last update of the APP YouTube, can play videos in HD (in compatible phones), but in the SGSII no

I dun get it...
Whilst I would love a 720p screen, I don't want just any 720p screen, it's gotta be samoled or ips+.
$1 gets you a reply
The One X has a 720p (non pentile) and uses LCD 2 technology. I've heard it looks amazing

720p screen would be better, some people don't like the saturated colors of AMOLED screen.
I doubt that on a 4 inch screen you can tell whether its HD or not!
Why don't you just go to a shop and look at them, with your eyes? You can't be sure which you will prefer by asking people here.

HD looks better
HD screen def looks better! but for everyday use think amoled trumps it battery wise.
People make a big deal over 720p screens while I would like it its not a big deal to me 480x800 super amoled+ looks fine, to me there's not much difference. my wife couldn't tell the difference between my gs2 and the nitro. she said mine looked better

You can play hd on sgs2!
hmm personally i think that the AMOLED screen does a mighty fine job at being sharp and clear... personally i like how vibrant the colours are and the option to tone it down via Display/Mode.
I don't really see the point in 720p HD on cellphones... >.> I rather buy a tablet.
Till you reach that 300ppi, you can still see differences. For example, the eBuddy icon in my status bar on my HTC Desire looked sharper then the one nkw on my S II.
Desire: 800x480 over 3.7 inches
S II: the same 800x480, over a bigger 4.3 inches
I will not calculate the ppi, but obviosly I could see the difference between the 2. I think the S II has somewhere around 200-220 ppi, HTC Desire around 240-260.
Most of the Android phone's with 720p displays have above 300ppi, like the iPhone's retina display. At that point, you really can't see those pixels anymore. Anyway, the S II's screen is amazing .. i love it. But to be honest that HTC One X' display is better from what I have seen.
Best thing is to wait a month to see the what the S III's like and then decide. I always hate people that buy a phone and then cry a better one comes out after 2 months... wait till all options are revealed and then buy! That moment will be after the Galaxy S III
@XDA mark
Galaxy S2 ~217 ppi
HTC Desire ~252 ppi
Thanks for the feedback guys, ill see wot the sg3 brings
Hey Guys,
I just recently sold my Evo 3D and upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus on Sprint - very happy. I have noticed A LOT of raving reviews about the SLCD 2 screen and that it makes the AMOLED look washed out etc...
What are you initial reactions to the screen, brightness, clarity, viewing angles etc? Does it really beat out the Super AMOLED HD?
Thanks.

Now this is the evo 4g LTE right
Does it beat it!?!? Retina display what? Amoled who? Screen is brilliant! Love it!!!!!!!!!!

when i first got my LTEvo, my eyes were in disbelief. absolutely beautiful. i miss the deep blacks of an amoled but blacks in exchange for every other color is a fair trade. enough to jump ship? ehh if you really got the spare cash sure

yes.. the display difference is outstanding
I have to say this screen is Ahhhhhhhhhh-mazing. I have a family member that has a iPhone 4s and my LTEvo screen uses the apples retina display to wipe it's @$$
I agree as well, the screen is truly amazing! Like seriously...when you look at it for the first time, it blows everything away.
When I saw press photos showing the EVO's screen, the skeptical side of me assumed they were photoshopped because the screen looked great, uniformly bright, and crisp at just about any angle. Now that I've seen it in person, it is seriously ridiculously awesome. When looking at it at an angle it doesn't even LOOK like an LCD screen; it looks like a screenshot of my phone pasted on top of the screen, kinda like those non-functional demo units you see in stores. It's just silly.
Another notch in the SLCD2's favor is that it won't have any burn-in. I think I read somewhere that AMOLED screens are vulnerable to burn-in?
I think my One X display is better than my Note/Nexus display, and better than the S3 display (I had a couple of hours hands-on with the S3 last weekend). The S3 display is also awesome, but overall SLCD-2 still has it for me (and I'm a self-confessed AMOLED fan).

Best screen I've ever seen, it's actually too bright, as good as everyone has said.

It may be just me but this screen has kind of changes the way I interact with my phone...its the most beautiful screen I have ever seen by far.

Wow. Overwhelming votes for SLCD 2. Has anyone come from a Galaxy Nexus?
I upgraded from a Nexus S to a Galaxy Nexus. I wasn't disappointed with the display but I don't remember being amazed by it either. I returned the GNEX within my 14 day window when i heard of the discounts for preordering the LTEvo at BB and trading in an og Evo.
Just completely blown away by the LTEvo display right out of the box...
SLCD2 ~ Samoled+ >> Samoled HD.
SLCD2 = amazing pixel density, high resolution - immediately noticeable if you play a lot of youtube videos. Good brightness. Requires high brightness for good contrast ratio.
Samoled+ = amazing contrast ratio. Not pixelated. Good brightness. Somewhat low resolution, only noticeable in videos.
Samoled HD = a step down from samoled+ in all almost all parameters. Still amazing contrast ratio. But very pixelated. Decent brightness.
Phones I've used - Evo LTE, Epic Touch, Galaxy Nexus.
I'd say I equally enjoy both SLCD2 and Samoled+. Samoled HD is just too grainy and dim.

^^^^^ THIS made me spit my freaking soda all over my OG EVO!
Come on man, I got to make this thing last till my LTE arrives!!
On a side note, that would be an excellent commercial for HTC.
