LOVE my new EVO LTE (hardware) -- waiting on a couple software fixes for a few things.
i remember reading a thread where you could map an ICS android's dedicated camera button to voice search on soft-press. You know, the one-push of the button, instead of the holding-it-down which brings up the camera.
I love ICS but i HATE that google removed the dedicated search button!! I used that all the time. For everything...
anyway, i used the search and i simply can not locate that thread anywhere. Any help is appreciated.

Its under Development. Hope this helps.
I agree with the search button comment... I just ended up adding a google search bar to the top of every panel like on the Nexus. I am starting to get used to tapping on it. But in apps, it does get occasionally frustrating-- though my love for the phone outweighs it dramatically
i agree, the phone itself is too awesome to get worked up over the search thing, but still... i miss it bordering on need it.
I'm glad to see someone is working on this, that is awesome, but that wasn't what i was looking for. it was in another phone's boards, it was done, and if i remember correctly, it only worked on ICS that had a dedicated hardware camera button. it wasn't a "remap any button you like hard or soft" thing...
i found this, which helps (and i did the same thing, put one on each homescreen ) voice-search button
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.companion.GVButton
--
still, it would be nice to have that button lower-right-side bring up the voice prompt! i had just gotten used to using voice-commands for everything only to have them take that away!
Dang, sorry that wasn't it.
I'm on exactly the same page. I was really enjoying using voice commands with ICS on my 3D with just a tap on the bottom, but now I just have to stretch my hand a tiny bit farther to get to that search bar [totally just realized a little while ago theres a mic on the bar for voice search too ].
But yes, here's to hoping someone cooks something up!
for remapping the list to menu, it's this thread here

I seldom use the search function on my n1 (quick press search button), compared to my shortcut (long press search button).
I'd love to have the function on the button flipped, so that only when I long press search I get to search, but simply quick pressing it brings me to quickdesk (my shortcut)
There has got to be others interested in this, but I can't find any solution on how to solve it..
Can somebody help me out?
Regards

I THINK someone looked at this before, and without having an app running actively ALL the time to remap the default single press keys, its impossible.

Or i assume, editing the framework from source ? Like how wysie did it with long-press home-button. If u dont know what im referring to try cm6.
The home button long press change in cm6 is really nice.
Wondering how deep in the OS/framework these changes are..
Basically the OS should register the 4 "hardware" buttons the same way, so if one can be changed, all should be able to be changed..
Also since I just wanna swap functions, there is no need for a gui/front end to control the changes or map certain programs to it.
(I wouldn't complain if cm6 got a full search button control for both short and long press though)
Sounds like something that could be baked into a cm rom if enough people was interested in it..

It should be possible, but I took a brief look at the source and couldn't find it -_-. Will look harder next week. (Weekend's here )
Glad to see you all liking the home button binding change .
I was actually thinking about this after seeing the MT Slide ad... All the genius button is is the search button binded to a skinned voice dialer (if it's even skinned, haven't looked into it)

Massive props to you if you can pull this off!
Looking forward to some good news next week
Key Mapping
This is a good resource: http://www.kandroid.org/android_pdk/keymaps_keyboard_input.html#androidKeymapKeyCharMap.
Would be awesome if you could pull this off

when I bout my vibrant i was debating between the slide and the vibrant well vibrant won that but i still want the genius button on the vibrant im guessing it just needs to be redeveloped to work with the bigger screen cause i got it on the vibrant BUT as we know it didnt work when i open it it does nothing any ideas cause this would be great if we could get it on the virbrant and working
Isn't the Genius Button sorta wired into the Tmo/Sense 2.1 UI they have running on the Slide?
I would try an awesome voice recognition program named vlingo. It's 9.99 in the market and does everything the genius button does and more. Only thing missing is a dedicated hardware button. It works great on my vibrant so far. I really liked the genius button on my slide, but vlingo does the trick. Just wish the vibrant had 2 more buttons on it, one for camera and one for voice recognition.
Long press your search button, it'll open up Vlingo search
Genius button = voice search
Just long press your search button.
My phone is just so...VIBRANT
VLINGO ROCKS
down with sense... but for real, vlingo works great on my vibrant
I definitely recommend Vlingo. It is one of those few apps that is absolutely worth the price.

Exactly. "Genius Button" is just a fancy shmancy marketing term that HTC uses in place of the Search button for Google. Apparently it's working since I've heard numerous people say they wish the Vibrant had a Genius Button.
Apparently there is a difference, as the Genius button allows you to say commands like text john doe. Tried it with the Vibrant and it just takes me to a web search of what I asked.

You can do this with Vlingo.
Yes, but not with the built in app as some people seem to think. There was a comparison of Genius button vs Vlingo and overall they liked Vlingo more. $10 though, which to some people is well worth it.
Theirs a Voice recognition app in the marketplace that's free to download called "Edwin" its not as perfect as the genius button but its capable of performing some of the same actions ... BTW its still being developed and there taking suggestions from the users to determine which direction they need to focus there developing

agreed that Edwin is pretty close to the Genius button. It will also define and spell words courtesy of dictionary.com .. You can say "sms hey whats up man" and it will type that in a text, then you click the contact you want... so its almost the genius button..
my experience with the genius button is that is lagged alot... it worked well and was a great feature.. but took too long to load often..
I also agree with Edwin being a great app. Plus the icon is cool too LOL
Hey guys,
I know next to nothing about modding/dev work, so this may be something completely impossible, and that's cool if it is. Can't know without asking.
I came from the Evo 3D (as I presume a bunch of you did as well), and one of the features I've found myself sorely missing is that blasted search button. I took for granted how convient it was to tap it and look up something really quick, or search through messages/emails/websites for whatever I was looking for.
On Char, using the pkmn tweaks, you can mod the capacitive buttons to open an app, so I had longpress recent apps opening google search, which worked fine for a hacked together solution. But is there anyway to have a mod that would mimic the old dedicated search button function? I.e., when in an application that has a search feature (like Play, Messages, Email, etc.), activation of the button would prompt opening of the search feature. If there's not a search feature, or you're on the home screens, it would prompt standard Google/phone search.
Was also wondering, randomly, if it was possible to have a search box in the pull down notifications? I feel like that'd be harder to implement with the functionality described above, but I think it'd be cool/convient for just quick searches of something if the capacitive buttons are a no go, or people aren't interested in them.
Either way, any of these things possible?
Well, disregard. I found that doing the keylayout remap so that half-pressing the camera button triggers search does the full functionality. Wonder why I couldn't get it to trigger with the capacitive buttons. Oh well!

Let me preface this by saying I don't know jack squat about how development is done, I just know some of the lingo, so feel free to ignore this and move on, but I have a request for something I'd like to see and don't believe it would be too awfully difficult to do for an experienced developer.
I've had my EVO for about three days now and love it, but there is one thing that is kind of annoying and I don't understand why HTC did this.
The phone has no capacitive menu button. Where I thought one was is just an app switcher button. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but because it exists in place of a menu button, when I go to many apps, the whole bottom of the screen gets turned into a big, Nexus-style menu button. Just a big waste of space.
What I'm asking for if someone will create a rom that changes nothing about Sense, the phone's UI or anything, just tweaks two things: Make the app switcher button into a menu button and make the app switcher feature come up by long-pressing the home button just like it used to in Android-past.
Like I said, this is a selfish request, so feel free to blow it off.
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727413
disclaimer: I haven't tried it; just googled.
Dude, that option is available in almost every rom as well as instructions on how to get rid of the 3 dot on screen menu that takes up unnecessary space in some apps

First off, you should post this in Q&A not development. Also, every rom has this ability and the mod is out there so do your homework and find it.
This has already been done.

This section of the forum is only for developers posting their work.
But as others have mentioned nearly every custom ROM has the recent apps key remapped to a menu button

As Ripply said, this is available in pretty much every Rom in the dev thread. Have you flashed any roms yet? Plus, this is a general section.
Mods please move....thanks

I have not tried any custom ROMs with this phone yet. I had the Hero and used to mod it all the time, but it broke and I had the less developer-friendly Samsung Replenish and my modding sorta stopped after that.
Just to chime in here to say that although I see why people want to remap their recent apps key to a menu button, I don't think that the savvy members of the android community (i.e. people like us who frequent sites like xda) should really be doing so. It's against Google's philosophy to move away from the menu button and more towards the action bar. This choice has already been in place for over a year, and it's time for users, manufacturers, and developers to honor it, if only to help against these arguments of android fragmentation. Frankly, it's a little unacceptable that the SGSIII features a hardware menu button (or that both the new Evo, which I own, and the SGSIII to still have hardware navigation buttons).
I really think that we should be pressuring app developers to update their products instead of regressing our phones.

When I long press the home button a semi circle comes up and Google is at the top, no other icons. Can I add different apps to this? I think I've been through every menu, I just got the phone yesterday and I am still working on it.
Thanks!

Short answer: not without modifying the firmware. There might be a custom firmware (or "xposed" module) that has this as a feature. (However, I'm not personally aware of anything on the HTC One M8 that does it.)
For future reference, single questions with shorter answers should be posted in the device's Q&A section, not the general section. (If it's an open question involving a lot of conversation, it might be okay in 'general.')
Take care
