Hey guys,
I know next to nothing about modding/dev work, so this may be something completely impossible, and that's cool if it is. Can't know without asking.
I came from the Evo 3D (as I presume a bunch of you did as well), and one of the features I've found myself sorely missing is that blasted search button. I took for granted how convient it was to tap it and look up something really quick, or search through messages/emails/websites for whatever I was looking for.
On Char, using the pkmn tweaks, you can mod the capacitive buttons to open an app, so I had longpress recent apps opening google search, which worked fine for a hacked together solution. But is there anyway to have a mod that would mimic the old dedicated search button function? I.e., when in an application that has a search feature (like Play, Messages, Email, etc.), activation of the button would prompt opening of the search feature. If there's not a search feature, or you're on the home screens, it would prompt standard Google/phone search.
Was also wondering, randomly, if it was possible to have a search box in the pull down notifications? I feel like that'd be harder to implement with the functionality described above, but I think it'd be cool/convient for just quick searches of something if the capacitive buttons are a no go, or people aren't interested in them.
Either way, any of these things possible?
Well, disregard. I found that doing the keylayout remap so that half-pressing the camera button triggers search does the full functionality. Wonder why I couldn't get it to trigger with the capacitive buttons. Oh well!

LOVE my new EVO LTE (hardware) -- waiting on a couple software fixes for a few things.
i remember reading a thread where you could map an ICS android's dedicated camera button to voice search on soft-press. You know, the one-push of the button, instead of the holding-it-down which brings up the camera.
I love ICS but i HATE that google removed the dedicated search button!! I used that all the time. For everything...
anyway, i used the search and i simply can not locate that thread anywhere. Any help is appreciated.
This one?:

Its under Development. Hope this helps.
I agree with the search button comment... I just ended up adding a google search bar to the top of every panel like on the Nexus. I am starting to get used to tapping on it. But in apps, it does get occasionally frustrating-- though my love for the phone outweighs it dramatically
i agree, the phone itself is too awesome to get worked up over the search thing, but still... i miss it bordering on need it.
I'm glad to see someone is working on this, that is awesome, but that wasn't what i was looking for. it was in another phone's boards, it was done, and if i remember correctly, it only worked on ICS that had a dedicated hardware camera button. it wasn't a "remap any button you like hard or soft" thing...
i found this, which helps (and i did the same thing, put one on each homescreen ) voice-search button
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.companion.GVButton
--
still, it would be nice to have that button lower-right-side bring up the voice prompt! i had just gotten used to using voice-commands for everything only to have them take that away!
Dang, sorry that wasn't it.
I'm on exactly the same page. I was really enjoying using voice commands with ICS on my 3D with just a tap on the bottom, but now I just have to stretch my hand a tiny bit farther to get to that search bar [totally just realized a little while ago theres a mic on the bar for voice search too ].
But yes, here's to hoping someone cooks something up!
for remapping the list to menu, it's this thread here

So I find that Voice Search is no longer integrated into a button (long press). It also doesn't even have a damn button for it. I have to launch Google Search and THEN launch Voice Search. Please tell me there is an easier way to do this...I don't want another launcher at this time either.

I found an app that's a shortcut, called "GVS" in google play on my pc (didn't see it on th e mobile version of google play for some reason). I downloaded it and put it on the home page...its perfect! .
ICS only uses 3 buttons as the standard, this has been known for a long time.
Just use the integrated Google search bar. I believe it's on the 2nd homescreen. Press the microphone and say what you want to search for, send a text, whatever.
I don't care about a search capacitive button. I know it only has 3 buttons smh. I just want my long press. Its all about hands free texting etc in the car. I dont want to have to switch pages and then find the search button on that page while driving. Guess i'll wait till a Sense 4.0 rom gets it right. Love the fun but this was a step backward for a VERY handy feature. Maybe they are planning to roll out Sense Speak or something soon.
The app I mentioned is a shortcut to Google Voice Search, I put it on the bottom bar (whatever that's called), so it's on every page...you can see it here
I was under the impression a long press on the multi-tasking button would launch Google Voice Search? Is this not the case? In any case, yeah, give it a week or so and someone will come out with a mod for the capacitive buttons like the One X has.
even better, i want the camera button hard press (not long press, which brings up the camera) to be the voice search button. i know i saw a thread on this, i asked for it in another post.
...Soft press i guess can be just a regular search button, if you are into that freaky ish
Banned
GVS was banned today. Hopefully Google just has an issue with the name.

Just an FYI on cm10 you can make a longpress set to voice search. I personally use long press recent app button for voice search. Just thought I'd point this out.

Hey all,
I've thought up what I think is a good idea for Samsung's "Smart App Challenge". As you can probably guess by the forum this is in, this would be primarily an S-Pen app, although you could use it without one. I would make this app myself, but have no experience writing apps and if I were to take the time to learn (which I do plan on doing), the contest will be over. *End rambling* Here's the idea:
Have an app that allows the user to press the side button of the pen (or maybe use some other shortcut, eg long press menu, home, etc). This would make whatever you're doing fade and you can write on the screen with your pen. You can assign different symbols or drawings or whatever to perform different actions, such as launching apps, opening bookmarks, changing settings, etc.
It's sort of a cross between "Activator" on jailbroken iOS and "Lost Magic" for the DS. I'm sure this has been thought of before, but no one (to my knowledge) has ever actually done it. Not sure if anyone has the ability to write something like this, but if you do and are looking for an idea, I think this has potential.
Thoughts?
Sounds like a decent idea to me, assuming you use the SPen a lot. I've used mine just a handful of times personally, but your idea makes some sense to me. Gestures for screenshot, specific apps, etc, sounds like a good idea.
I won't be using a TW based ROM any more, so unless the SPen stuff can be compiled into CM9/CM10 I won't be seeing your app but good luck
Thanks for the feedback! Alternatively, you could do this without an s-pen, allowing you to set up different gestures and actions to trigger different events or change different settings.
For example:
Let's say you use your phone as a flashlight a lot, and want to make it easier to access on your non-cm/aokp based rom. Theoretically, you could set long-pressing the home button to turn your flash on. (Or, using the s-pen, you could press the side button and draw a circle or a lightbulb or something.) I know there are a lot of launchers that incorporate simple gesture recognition, but this would have a broader application, changing the way we interact with our phones. Another example, you could set s-pen input to only be used for gestures. So if you wanted to turn your flashlight on, you simply pull out your s-pen and write "light" or draw the gesture of your choosing on the screen and your flashlight turns on. There are so many ways people could potentially do things, and I think there should be an app that focuses on tailoring your phone to best suit your own personal needs.

It's kind of like the lock screen gestures on cm7, which I really miss, but having it anywhere would be awesome. Great idea!

This looks pretty sweet. Had no idea this existed, but looks interesting. What it has that I don't really like is that big green "G" that's always sitting on top of what you're doing (from what I gather reading the description). I think we need a more elegant way to activate the system.
I never use the search soft button on the 717. Is there any way to reuse it to launch an application or something else?
written in your mud with my stick.
On another galaxy phone there was an app that let you do anything with any button. I made the search button put the phone to sleep.
Don't some of the newer roms allow for it? I swear mine has been the flashlight button ...at least on the lock screen. Unless my decaying brain is just messing with me.

if you hold the button down at least google voice search should launch. Maybe a couple other app options.
Btw, deleting voice_talk_q1.apk from system/app on JB will enable google voice search if you long press search. Rather then the samsung svoice only.

I don't think this works with jelly bean, but maybe some one can figure it out.

So ive been search around for a while now on how to fix this. And to anyone that chimes in and says why do you need the menu button obviously you don't use older apps, the new touch button on the screen is a huge annoyance especially since i've used my phones this way since my first S1. Regardless this is how i want it and so do many other people.
Currently this is only for a rooted phone
I have figured out how to remap the left soft key from the App Switcher/Multi window over to the old style menu key. Instructions for that can be found here
But now i don't have any way of switching to my currently open apps, after remapping the left key, the longpress now takes you to search. and long pressing on the home button also takes you to another variation of the search (both i dont use nor want). I want to be able to remap my left softkey on longpress to open up currently open apps (APP_SWITCH) and it would be nice if long pressing on Home could open the Task Manager as it did on my S3.
As far as i can tell editing of the longpress function is done via a Policy edit. Read about that HERE
Keep in mind that post is from 2014 so i have no idea if the internal code is still being handled the same way, i couldn't even find that file on my S6, but i did find a file called SEPOLICY in my root folder using ROOT EXPLORER. Do any of you know more about this and how I can go about changing this? im sure its a code level adjustment. Thanks
Long-press home button can be controlled without root easily.
Check out this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spada.nowgesturetweaksfree
I use the long-press home to get to my last used app.
I wonder if I can remap my buttons to launch any other apps.. Will have to tinker around a bit.

very useful. menu for navigation is long long outdate. software nave or 3 dots is the customary way to go. adding a secondary menu button is redudant and unnecessary. my little ewww comment brought a lot to the table. you tryingt to call me out on it is less useful.

lol f off
If you guys use Dropbox, how do you get to the menu with SORT, etc.. without a menu key. This is making me crazy. I'm using nova launcher and there is no floating menu key. ????
The problem is if not every developer uses it, it's inconsistent.
It often helps if the options etc. In apps are on the top, so you don't have to fidget with your phone to reach the top or use two hands.
The menu button on every app is positioned somewhere else, so I find the op wanting it justified.
All in one gestures let's you remap every key, for some odd reason on my s4 I can remap the menu key, but on the S6 for some odd reason the option of the menu key has vanished in the same app:what:

Hi pal. Hope it helps. Make 254 button remap, then install nova launcher, in tab gestures select long press menu and then recent app. Profit! Now once tapped you have menu button, long pressed - recent apps.
So, i made it, i use it. It works.
