Have cm9 nightly flashed and running like a dream except for I can not read anything from my external SD card. Have tried search but only have access through app for a while and struggling to find anything of help. Think it may be something to do with the format of the card but not sure . And would really like to save what I already have on it. Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Where do you have it mounted?
Settings > Storage > Menu-Button > Configuration
Do you have the box ticked there?
Other than that, what file-system do you use for your SD card? It had to be FAT32.
Not 100% sure what format the card is in . Has been working on ics and miui without problem.
It was checked and external SD was greyed out .
Don't know if this will give any clues
Thanks
Kieron
Have just unchecked use external SD for apps and rebooted could read card fine but internal storage was then greyed out .
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I have this option checked. While it's not the way Google likes it, many app-developers do and therefore I'd mix things up if I used it the other way round.
Now to your problem.
Try this:
Use a file explorer which can go into the system root ("/").
Open the "mnt" folder.
Inside it there are folders called "emmc" and "sdcard".
Depending on whether you've checked the option or not, one is the internal and one the external memory.
Tell me if it works.
Have done as u requested and both folders are present.

But out of root explorer I still don't have access.

How did you try to access the external sdcard?
Because you have access to it as you can see in the file explorer.
Can't access it with gallery or if I were to restore my contacts from there. Should it be greyed out when looking at settings/ storage
Thanks

Have managed to get photos to show in galley now by using dev tools/ media provider to scan SD card. But anything else remains hidden unless through root explorer.

Looks fine; just like over here.
You can tell that your external sdcard is mounted because it tells you its size and how much space is left.
It's normal that it's greyed out, because the external sdcard doesn't have this fine-grained stats.
So the gallery is working fine now, but you said that you don't have access to it.
So what's the deal? Does some app make problems? (Tell me which one)
Or can't you listen to music, watch videos, etc....?
So by what means you "can't access" it?
To be honest its more the fact I wanted things to work perfect as I am loving cm9 .
An example would be if I wanted to import my backed up contacts from the SD card it would not find any that has been saved on the external SD card but can find ones on internal SD .
Plus I was missing some galleries (found now after media scan).
I think what made it seem worse is that when running ics miui I never had such issues.
But had to go back to cm .
Thanks
Kieron

Ahhh.
This clears everything up. I now understand what issues you had with the transition.
In short:
It's not that cm has problems, but one of the things Samsung ****ed up.
Explanation:
Look, on Samsung's roms (and therefore also on MIUI v4) the external sdcard is mounted at "/mnt/external_sdcard" (or something like this - don't remember exactly anymore) and the internal memory is mounted at "/mnt/sdcard".
This is NOT the way it's supposed to be! The Android-standard is like this:
Internal at "/mnt/emmc"
External sdcard at "/mnt/sdcard"
This caused a whole lot of issues in the past, like cwm mixing up the internal and external memory.
However, some apps have "/mnt/sdcard = internal" hardcoded and therefore break the standard.
Thank you for that Samsung.
As a bypass the option I told you about was introduced. When it's checked, it breaks the standard by mounting the internal memory at "/mnt/sdcard" and the external at "/mnt/emmc". This avoid apps putting their data on the external memory if they're poorly coded.
As you can see it's very confusing and an absolutely unnecessary bull**** Samsung has pulled off there.
The easiest solution:
Do it just like me. Connect the device to a computer and copy everything in two different folders. Then format the external and internal memory.
After that copy your files where you want them to be manually.
Yeah, it probably takes some time, but it's something that you do once only.
That way I merged my photographs and backups that were split and btw also got rid of unnecessary files.
All makes a bit more sense now. Still new to the s2 coming from the Sony x10. But learning slowly with the help of xda and its members yet again. And all seems to easy to make a simple mistake. But succeeded so for with flashing boot loader and roms.
Will sit and sort some files out and then do as you have suggested and format and sort.
Many thanks for all your help and patients . And maybe one day I could return the favour
Thanks again
Kieron

Hey guys i have been unable to move/install apps to my sd card ever since changing to MIUI I'm not sure whether this is a problem with the ROM or not (i think i may have insalled applications to SD on a previous GB version of MIUI)
I am using a rooted Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 with the latest MIUI based on 4.0.4. before MIUI i was on CM7 stable and i remember messing around with some settings there to try and get my phone to read music off the sd card as well as internal memory-(where all my downloaded music was going). I also may have done a dodgy partition on my old 32gb micro sd or some how partitioned my internal storage of my phone...
I have recently successfully partitioned my Sandisk 64gb micro SDXC to this tutorial...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343187
when i go to move a 'moveable' app eg. Paypal through 'Link2Sd' it comes up with an error saying "pkg:/data/app/com.paypal.android.p2pmobile-1.apk Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_CONTAINER_ERROR]
when i go to move a 'moveable' app through 'App 2 SD Pro' it says 'couldn't move app'

try to format ur sd and repartition ur sd ext. and flash ur script again.
u may try amarullz "ad2sdx" or dk_zerocool "mount2sd" script...
did you try Titanium Backup to move those apps?
also u can do in adb shell "pm setinstalllocation 2"
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
when you partition the sd card doesn't it format it then? I repartitioned my SD card still the same problem.
I also went to back up my current rom today through 'ROM manager' and it said something along the lines of...
SD card mounted...
SD card space free: 30437MB
............(can't remember)
...No SD_EXT found
something something...checking MD5 sums
It then waited a little bit and rebooted without creating a backup. I then booted into CWM and tried doing a back up again. It came up with the same relative message as above but it decided to make a back up. The back up folder had 7 files in it (this seems normal to me) and also backed up to my micro SD which is new
Today i also tried moving apps with titanium backup. It moved them effortlessly or so i thought and then later i checked the SD card on the computer the apps files were no where to be seen so i double checked through Apps 2 SD, Link2sd and the system app info on my phone and they all show that the apps have not been moved to my micro sd card.
i havent tried the adb shell or script methods you have sugested but i will soon and let you know how i go.
thanks heaps in advanced!
i hv seen many ppl complaining abt cwm creating bad partitions. so i would suggest it via pc.
for formatting use "sdformatter"
for partitioning use "minitool partition wizard".
ur issues seem to be wid bad partition.

I have done all my recent partitions on a PC using Gparted. before MIUI i was on CM7 and could have possibly done a partition there using cwm. if i wipe my phones inernal storage/sd will it still boot up? the internal storage in my case being labled as 'usb storage'
thanks again in advanced havent had time to try these things out yet but hopefully will soon
internal storage labelled as usb storage? wat model? as long as u hv nothing related to /system in sd ext. ur phone should boot fine

Precisely...the pictures in my first post show that storage sections labled 'internal storage' and 'usb storage' are both on my phones memory. I am able to take the micro sd out of the phone and these storage locations are still mounted and installed apps still work. Also when i open my native file explorer to see where my apps are and select 'SD card' it goes to the directory of 'usb storage'. This problem occurs with apps such as Astro and other file managing apps.
sry, am totally lost. may be someone else will help you out. gud luck

I had this problem, i fixed it by changing the default install location to auto in link2sd. or ifg you dont have link2sd in settings set it to let system decide. hope this helps someone out there
Just got my Tmo Note home, I think I got the last one as there were only 2 Denver retail stores that had them . Is there going to be a new forum here at xda for this phone?
I'm having an issue with the external sdcard, I am using ES File Explorer. I put the external sdcard from my old sensation into the new note, I browse to /sdcard/external_sd/ and I get an empty folder. Something reported to me that the ext sdcard was not mounted but I forget what I was doing when I saw that. What do I need to do to access the external sdcard taken from my Sensation?
I imagine this is an easy situation, I just haven't experienced a setup where there is an internal and external sdcard on a phone.
Thanks
Peter
That's interesting because I have a i717 and I flashed a nandroid backup courtesy of Rotohammer if I am not mistaken, when the device booted and I went to look for sd card it didn't show anything. But a reboot solved it for me. Worst case is you backup anything you need from the sd to a PC and fully format card.

I rebooted and still got an empty /external_sd folder. Once I backup the sd to pc, how do I mount/format the ext. sdcard?
Also, when I plugged the phone into pc with usb it shows phone as 9.85GB - I thought this came with 16GB of internal memory?
Under /mnt i have asec, obb, sdcard, secure and usb - no /mnt/ext_sdcard
Make sure the card if formated as FAT32 - if plugged into a computer, right click and select properties). I recently purchased a 64gb card and when I turned on the Note, I got the error the SD card was not mounted. I couldn't mount it or format it. Did some searching and others had that problem. The solution was to delete all partitions (searched cnet downloads for a partition manager) on the microSD card then insert into the Note & turn it on. The Note reported there was a damaged SD card - then I was given a prompt to format the microSD card.
So make sure your data is backed up 1st.
Not sure why your internal space shows that. That number seems low. May have to format internal storage and factory reset as it comes fresh out of the box.

There it is on my i717r.
As for the storage on the phone, mine has 1.97 internal[apps, etc], 10.85 usb storage[the other part of internal formatting], and of course my 29.81 under sdcard[actually the external card]

I just got the T-Mobil Galaxy Note as well. I had not problem moving my SD card from My Touch 4g. At first I didn't understand the file structure, but now I see that the external cards shows under the directory of the SD card which really is internal memory. That memory shows only a total of 9.85 GB (should be 16 according to specs) and the other internal is 1.97 GB. I would also be curious if anyone know why the internal memory numbers are so far off.
My best guess is this.
11gb is parted off for user.
2gb is parted off for apps.
that's 13gb for user storage.
The rest is for /system, /cache, dalvic and future ROM updates. Naturally a new os will take more space so they make a best guess for future upgrades, features, etc.
You never really get what the advertised storage is. Plus its better to have more space remaining for the rom than what it actually needs to help future proof a bit and so you don't run into storage restrictions when upgrading or flashing custom stuff.
Take the xoom for example, it leaves 28gb for user, and only about 1gb to 1.3gb for the rest of the system. Because of that we have to use symbolic links to have some of the gapps load up when flashing as to avoid errors and such.
Sometimes having some missing storage is a good thing as its almost certainly belonging to the back end.

Hello. I am running very low on RAM (internal memory) on my Original Droid RAZR. I am aware that there are root apps that use SD Card memory as RAM. Some apps are: "RAM Manager" and "Swapit RAMEXPANDER by ROEHSOFT". You can get them in the Play Store.
Video of one of the apps:
Will this actually work? Thanks.
wait...ram or internal memory?? ram can't be changed but you can increase your internal memory by swapping it with your sd card...in razr its easy to do so...you do need root though
you do that by changing the "sdcard-ext" to "sdcard" and sdcard to sdcard-ext"

He is trying to use some extra storage space on his sdcard as a sort of page file or swap file to give him more memory for the OS to run in I think. Who knows with people, myself included, interchanging the terms memory, RAM, and storage. I do it, but it is inadvertant.

No its isn't!
After rooting you ccan make a 'partition' on your sd card that will be assigned to the phone memory. You can use link to sd for this and make partition through CWM...once you read about rooting youll get to know about CWM..so search around this forum..

I have dropbox and love it (50GB free) :woohoo:
On JB roms I can't export to external SD card (I can export to internal but I prefer to use external for DB)
on GB rom the path for external SD card is accessed within internal SD card i.e. sdcard/extsdcard/ (or something similar)
So, is there anyway to get Dropbox to see external SD card on JB?? (NB, it does see folders if you create new folder from within the app, but it doesn't see any other folders [apart from clockworkmod for some reason])
-=or=- is there a way to change the JB path for ext sdcard to be accessed from within the internal storage??
PS - I do just manually move things from internal to external... but I'm not getting any younger doing it

I dunno... Could it be related to a specific ROM? I have no problem at all accessing both int and ext SD cards from Dropbox "export" function (they are listed as internal storage and SD card respectively), and can see all folders on either storage. Running Disaster v.10 (stock-based LSD).

Hi,
Just this night I've been using my sdcard in a normal way, browsing internet, downloading files when suddenly my phone couldn't boot after flashing bootanimation (zip made by trusted developer so that's not the problem). Now when I connect my SD Card to the phone it will either say "preparing sdcard" forever or just simply freeze phone after few seconds. I tryed to connect it via working adapter with my PC to back it up... After copying few files sdcards unmounts from the reader... I've tryed on XP and it shows some command errors while trying to copy files in a regular way. I was ONCE able to flash few zips via recovery in order to make my phone boot up again it worked. Now I'm scanning my SD Card using Norton Internet security 2013 - Paid version - not cracked, and the sdcard seems to stay mounted to the PC. Unfortunately after trying to copy files from SD Card to PC it just freezes explorer.exe and unmounts itself...
Please help me, I really have some important pictures on this sd card
PS. 32 GB SanDisk Class 10 UHS-I (grey and red one)
PS. 2 I was using swap partition, maybe my sdcard went dead from constant reads and writes?
PS. 3 Using linux I managed to copy 81 MB... then any copying froze but ubuntu didn't... Damn, thats weird
It appears to randomly stop reading from SD Card as now it stopped at 153,1MB out of 422MB, all thumbnails of photos were shown properly though.
well first connect ur sdcard to an old mobile you have then connect mobile to computer
backup your data then use a partition tool to delete partition of sdcard then recreate it as FAT32 partition and try to put sdcard to your mobile again
if still, then wipe data/factory reseyt your rom
if doesn't work then let me know

Well, connecting to an old mobile isnt an option as the SDCARD does the same thing even on xperia T which isnt that bad and that Xperia T never had this sdcard connected before.
I'd love to backup my data, but I can't
Full rom wipe and reflash fresh was done straight after getting problems with this sdcard.
Unfortunately it still doesn't work
I got the error I was talking about!

I've recovered like 90% of data. Afterwards I've tried to perform Low Level Format... But this goddamn sdcard had to eject just at the start, therefore partitions got deleted, I'm trying to rebuild bootsector with testdisk but it takes ages, even after looking at tutorials online it takes so long to rebuild bootsector, no idea why...
