[Q] New to Android - Need Advice (Rooting and Firmware) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I will be getting this phone today (i9100 unlocked) and have a couple of questions on how to proceed onwards. Any help would be greatly appreciated
1. What is the best firmware and rooted kernel for me to go on?
I want the absolute simpilest way to root my phone (total beginner) and I don't know what firmware I will have when I receive it, I also don't know if I should stay on a gingerbread firmware or go to ics? I also don't care if it is official or custom as long as I'm not sacraficing stability. If possible I would like a rom that is good for battery life. I also want to root my phone in the safest way. There are so many tutorials I didn't know where to start
2. What are some of the essential rooted apps and how do you install them? Through superuser or market?
3. What are the risks involved with a standard flashing/root because I'm getting my phone second hand I don't have warranty.
Thanks for all your help!
Edit: I just say a sticky saying not to ask what roms are the best so I'm sorry if I broke a rule. I just literally have no idea where to start, I've never even used android before. I've found so many methods of rooting and roms but most seem outdated. I would just like someone to point me in the right direction of the up to date way. Sorry if I'm really not supposed to ask!

Superuser is not used to install apps, you would either download them from the market or manually install the .apks

Rooting your phone would void the warranty anyway and bricking is probably your biggest risk.

Sry, didn't see the rest of your post, but is there an all in one sort of tutorial for this?

Yes. There are dozens, if all you wanted me to do was provide a link to a more comprehensive guide, why don't you just learn how to use Google for yourself?

Most of these guides will contain everything you need to know to get started.

Believe me, I tried, but there are so many options, also, I've now decided to opt for a locked virgin i9100 bcause it was 50 bucks more for a new phone with the warranty, so what's the best way to unlock one? I think I recall a free app.

What problem are you having? Your post just says you're stuck..... IMO if you can't figure out how to download/install APKs (let alone applications that are provided on market) then you DON'T need a rooted phone.
Here are direct links to locations for both of those applications rather than the androlib links provided in the other thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
http://code.google.com/p/androidterm/downloads/list
Install those and follow the directions in the thread -- funny how people complain that superoneclick doesn't work when this uses exactly the same payload.

Super one click does not work for your information.
And I understand how to have a rooted phone I was asking for help on how to root 2.1.
Shut up with your negative attitude and thank you very much for your helpful post.
And it is funny how you people think that when we ask for help on rooting that we are stupid.
And I didn't mean I was stuck on download .apk files. I was stuck on the first step with the commands and stuff...
I tried to run the adb file and it wouldn't work...

There are two guides on the topic, so you should have asked on one of them, and tried the steps suggested on the first page. People are still asking about it looping despite there being suggestions on the first page to overcome it.
Super one click works on 2.1.
Sometimes fails and does strange loops but after several tries it will work.

I believe that stopped working on newer versions of 2.3.6 and higher.
OK. The simplest way to root your phone is CFRoot. I don't give a crap what anyone else says. There's 10 steps. It takes 10 minutes tops, including downloading the kernel (the rooting/flashing part takes two minutes tops), unless your internet connection is a piece of string between you/your ISP with a tin can at either end, and you get CWM installed as part of the process.
Anyone who faps around with any other process is a fool & overcomplicating something which should be so simple a process, a bonobo with an IQ of -823 can get it done (in between shagging other members of its clan as bonobos tend to do with 99.99% of their time)

I agree with the overall sentiment, but you can also use any other kernel that auto-roots and installs CWM recovery as well. But sticking with CF-Root keeps things simple since the CF-Root thread has both the files and instructions.
Given the propensity for people here to ask question after question (even tho what they're asking has already been explained as simply as possible) & expecting to be spoonfed rather than read/learn/follow very simple instructions, keeping it simple in the first instance hopefully reduces this.
Anyone who can't root their phone with CFRoot after being directed to read the 'Help ! Which file do I use ?' bit carefully needs to get an iPhone as far as I'm concerned. No hope whatsoever.

If in your quote above (that I bolded), you're referring to DooMLoRD's zergRush exploit, it works on all releases of 2.3.5, and some of the earlier releases of 2.3.6. But it was patched in one of the 2.3.6 releases; I don't know which one, though.
But as the 4 post exchange between MistahBungle and I indicate, yes, CF-Root is the easiest way.

Quotes above are for context.
This is the only one click root I know about. It works for any version you can find an insecure kernel for, and there are various insecure kernels around for versions WAY newer than 2.3.4.
If you know of a different one click root, (that only works for 2.3.4 or lower, as you you indicate) then please cite your source.

Hum..let's say that while you are in 4.0.4 you are in danger (If you wanna modify your device, software related).
If you wanna play it safe, you got 2 options:
1) downgrade from 4.0.4 to 4.0.3
2) flash a safe kernel (like siyah).
Just start digging about all these, read some threads, some guides, watch some youtube videos of flashing and rooting.
After that, if you still want to root/flash your device, you'll find many guides & tutorials in the general forum. Just like this.
Modifying your device is not hard, you just have to know what you are doing and learn the what-not-to-do tips.

Gingerbread is just the previous version on ICS. Some consider it better, other consider it old. You just have to remain far from brick bug. Download gotbrickbug app from play store if you want a good old scare
Don't worry about the builds, just make sure that you flash an I9100 ROM.
Still, you're up for some reading first.

[Q] .:New Method to root Andoid:.

Hello,
I am currently using the Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300. Bought this device last April. At that time I was completely new to rooting device. I didn't know what to do. I searched online about rooting device, read many post by users in various blogs and threads here in XDA. Then I was very curious to root my device. But even then, though i knew what rooting was and its merits and demerits, i had no idea how to root my device. So I started searching again for an easy and fast way to root my device. Then I came me across the framaroot thread here and thanks to the developer of Framaroot, I was able to root my android safely without any problems. It was a very useful app for beginners who had no idea about rooting.
After few months, I received a firmware update. I had no idea what changes it would bring about in my device. In a hope to find out the new features, I updated the firmware. But sadly, there wasn't any noticeable change. So once again I seeked the help of framaroot to root my device. I was left with an error message and didn't know what to do. Again by searching on Google, I came to know about the OTA update about which I had no idea prior to the firmware update. I realized that the OTA update was a curse to Android rooting and I was left with my boring stock rom without anything. Today again I searched all over the Internet for a very safe and easy method to root my device but couldn't find anything like the framaroot. So here I am kindly requesting, the deveopers to kindly update the already existing methodsor make a new easy method to root android devices so that people new to android can experiment and enjoy root features. Sorry for the long story, thought it might be useful by explaining everything in detail. Hope I have not violated any of the XDA rules. If I did, I apologise for that too but please don't remove this thread. It would be very nice if anyone can find a solution as there are many people in the same situation as I am right now.
Thanking XDA and all the developers for there services.

1- Its the fastest and most reliable method I femilliar with- just follow the vid orders step by step (according to your device model), and no harm
should be made (unless you plug out your device in the middle of the process, or using a different model type- but even those can be resolved).
2- No apps that I know. Although i would not recommend it even if I found one- just seems too riksy than using the computer...
Basically all the OP questions are answered in the faqs and guides .
Root is constantly updated as and when possible but its not a simple question of just making a new one . Read the relevant root threads .

If it was only that easy on S3 would save a lot of trouble ..yep follow instructions in thread and use PhilZ .tar.md5 not the zip file and if you are flashing CM 11 you do not need to root the rom is already rooted.

Before I do something like that, can u predict if it may work since the same method worked for the N7000 or can u tell me if have you tried it before? (Please tell me if I am annoying u, it doesn't matter )
