Why put the micro USB port on the side? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey Guys,
Don't you guys think the USB port could have been placed on a better spot ? Maybe where the old evo had it or on the right side.
How are we support to charge our phone while using the kickstand Horizontally.

I don't have the phone yet but wouldn't you just flip it on the other side?

But how do u turn the volume up?
I agree that it was poorly placed. But lucky I don't change volume that much

IIRC, the motherboard is limited to the top of the phone, so it would require additional wiring/circuitry/supports to have a jack at the bottom. I do agree, having it on the side is asinine. Hard to talk on it when plugged in too.

Until that hinge wears, loosens, and no longer holds the phone up

Its not a deal breaker. But this phone would be perfect if it had a bottom charger and removable battery.
I use the horizontal charging all the time at work. The cord sticking out the top looks stupid. So if you have it plugged in to a radio you have a cord sticking out two sides.

I would guess that it's so you can use a landscape dock with a charging port.

Probably has more to do with a space issue caused by the non-removable battery. The port could go anywhere on the phone and they could just run wires back to the USB/MHL header on the circuit board, but the port has to fit somewhere.

I was going to say a dock but is there going to be a dock is there even 3 dots on the side for a dock like on the gn

You'd think they would at least have sprung for the extra 1/2 of one cent to stick a right angle micro usb cable in the box.
you can get them here:

[Q] Thunderbolt USB port

Does anyone have a good picture of the microUSB port on the Thunderbolt? I have been searching but haven't found a clear picture. I am trying to figure out if I need a right angled microUSB cable or a left angled microUSB cable. I would like the microUSB cable to go down. Thanks in advanced. I can't wait for the release of this phone, I've already bought a few goodies for it!
theres a nice 360 view on bestbuy that might help you.

EDIT: new member had to take the http out sorry
Thanks for that link! If I'm looking at everything right, it would seem a left angled microUSB is the way to go.

no problem glad i could help. yea if you want the cord to go towards the bottom of the phone it seems like that would be what you want.
Where do you get the right angle cables from?

I would assume a site like monoprice.com has them
Unfortunately, it does not look like monoprice has any angled cables. That was the first place I checked. The cables I found are made by StarTech. They sell them directly from their website, or they can be purchased through other sites like newegg.com.

I personally want one for my vehicle. I have a phone mount to the right side of my radio. Since the charging port is on the left side of the phone, this new cable will allow the phone to charge without interfering with my radio contols, and it will look nicer when charging.
The new cable will go straight down and into the 12V adapter. Should look nice.

Anybody know what triggers dock mode?

So I'm guessing that this is exactly like what is on the EVO 4G and Galaxy S (both of which I just read about) where they use resistors/shorts between wires on the usb cable to tell the phone which dock it is in.
Does any know what does it yet on this phone?
On the Galaxy S I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275
The EVO 4G I found this that doesn't really have a definitive answer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761571
So has anyone tried any of this with the EVO 3D? I'm guessing it's probably closer to whatever was going on in the EVO 4G since they're both made by HTC.
I had the car mode/ dock program in my evo. Spent atleast a month with the problem attempting to fix it myself but basically the USB connection had water damage and was shorting out making the phone think it was in a car dock
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I took apart a micro USB connector from a car dock for the EVO 4G. it has a small PC board and what looks like a surface mount resistor between pins 4 & 5. That same connector triggers car dock mode on the 3D as well.

Hope this help
Awesome pics. So in looking at those it looks like on the side the phone plugs in there are two black wires going to one node. One of them looks like it is tied to one of the green wires. Is that the case?
I bought a cheap dock from EBay and I was hoping I could easily modify it.

On the OG-EVO charger if you grounded pin 5 to pin 4, that initiates dock mode.

Desktop Charger

I've tried having a look around and I can't find a desk charger/cradle for the Lumia 800, I know the hinged door cover makes it hard but does anyone know of one that is compatible?
Thanks!
I bought this N9 charger and it works well:

Unfortunately, it's out of stock on amazon but may be available in UK

Thanks, I'll have a look at it. Where is the micro usb socket on the n9? How does this dock deal with the open door on the 800?
Same place, top left. The N9 & Lumia 800 have the same body (barring camera button and flash LED placement).

Awesome, thanks! I was a bit worried that the phone would have to be put upside down in the cradle.
I'm off to see I can find it in stock somewhere.
That only stands the phone up, the USB charger goes in the top as normal. You'd be better off (and save money) by just leaning it against something while it's charging.
It's not the same as an iPhone dock (or some HTC docks) which connect the phone directly to a charger when you place it in the dock.

htc rhyme has connectors on the back... thats what i call dock
I say, this is a marvelous find on my behalf, I was getting to the notion that I may just have to leave my phone in a horizontal position on my desk for the rest of eternity.

kickstand complaint

After having my Photon for four days I have been loving it, but have one complaint regarding the kickstand.
If you have the kickstand employed, you can not plug in a charger. I was trying to watch a movie during my lunch break yesterday and the battery was dying, but I could not plug it in.

actually its a good thing its main kickstand side is on that side cause no buttons can be accisentally pressed(ive been charging and using the kickstand like so, was resting my hand ontop the phone reading and it hit the camera button exiting my window) so maybe in the future theyll come out with some alround better design for a kickstand and plugin/button placement

Ports on bottom of phone?

Maybe two centered kickstands that can rest and be locked either way. With a slant we could also do this vertically.

My favorite thing about the OG Evo right there.. bottom usb port.. made life so easy
Actually the port placement is terrible for the Photon/Electrify. Consider the car. You're driving, and you have your phone in a holster within reach of the driver. In America, where this phone is primarily sold, the driver sits in the left seat, so the phone is to his/her right, probably on the left side of the instrument panel. Probably, the 12V outlet is somewhere to the right of that, so the charging cable has to reach around. Mine isn't quite long enough, so it threatens to pull the phone out of its holster. This is unsafe for driving. With the port on the bottom, it would be convenient for drivers on both sides (e.g. UK for the right) as long as your holster has an open bottom (mine does).
Actually, my Electrify does the Hero S (Evo Design 4G, for you Sprint folks), which I had for 6 days, one better. Hero S also had it on the left, but right where the holster grabs the phone. So using the holster was impossible with that phone. Just one of the reasons I traded up to Electrify.
Back to topic: Reverse kickstand is cool, but it depends on the spring action being intact. I'm not sure if it can go out on you, but that would kill reverse kickstand if true. As it is, having the charger cable coming out the "top" can pull it back if the cable doesn't have enough slack.
If you want normal kickstand, I recommend rigging a stand, like a poor man's HD dock. Put a hole where the USB port goes, and if you really wanna be fancy, fix it in there permanently. But if you were gonna be fancy, you'd give it a backing (with a space for the speaker, of course) but all that implies you're better at woodworking than most people. I'd like to think with the right hardware I could do alright, but I know my zero woodworking experience means I would utterly fail to produce anything approaching reasonable quality.

Otter car dock mod!!

Don’t know if this is where this goes or not but it’s about accessories..
So I have the Sprint car dock and it works great (even if it only launches the dock half the time). I went out and bought the Otterbox commuter case and I love it. The good news is YES the case does if in the dock…. The bad news is the flap that covers the UBS port does not. So I had two choices, one cut the rubber that protects the USB port off and risk all kinds of pocket lint and dust getting in there or modify the dock… SO
I modified the dock… all I did was take a Dremel (best tool ever) and cut away the plastic edge. Now you have to be careful because it would be easy to “slip” and cut into your USB port. Also the LED power light is right there so watch that too!!!
Here is what 10 minutes of work look like!!

I will sand it a little but I think it turned out great!!! Now I can use my case and dock!!! I would take a picture of the phone in the dock but the phone is all I have to take pictures at the moment lol.
Let me know what you think??
Well done, problem solved. Looks fine to me. And yes, dremels are awesome ! Dremels, 5 min epoxy, and duct tape. I can do anything!
indeed nice! I bought mine today and was thinking.. just a little more room and I could totally Dock my otter box! but, I thought I would just cut off the little flap to the Charge port. instead, You've inspired me!
Thanks guys. I did not want to hurt the case as I get way more use out of it then the dock. But with the usb cover out it actually covers up the cut on the dock so you don't see it anyways. Looks great!

You made the right decision.
When you have to mod something , you want to avoid reducing functionality if you can. Cutting the dock doesn't change its functionality (even if it didn't fit after the cutout) , while removing the USB cover removes a feature.
